This first large dog on our list is quite unique. Unlike other large breeds, the Newfoundland was
never bred to be a guard dog. In fact, they were specifically bred to help fishermen. These big,
muscular dogs are perfectly comfortable on land as well as in water. They possess incredible
strength and are able to haul nets and lines from boats, pull carts and, most importantly, fetch
anything that falls overboard into the water, including people.
The Newfoundland is an exceptional water dog and a very strong swimmer. Think of them as
the K9 version of David Hasselhoff in Baywatch. There have been many rescues of people out
at sea credited to these gentle-natured dogs.
Newfoundland dogs stand between 27 to 30 inches tall and weigh as much as 150 pounds.
They look even bigger because of their thick double coat which keeps them warm even in icy
water. People have found them to be perfect companions and are even great around children.
The downside is, large breeds like these eat quite a lot and can eat you out of house and home.
Number 9. The Irish Wolfhound
The Irish wolfhound, as its name implies, was bred to chase down wolves. They were
developed from war hounds into a dog that was used for hunting and guarding. One of the most
ancient of dog breeds, the Irish wolfhound may have been brought to Ireland as far back as
7000 B.C.
Although they were originally bred to be expert hunters, today’s Irish Wolfhounds make
excellent human companions. They are quiet, reserved, intelligent and easy-going.
Irish wolfhounds aren’t big and muscular like the Newfoundland; they are actually pretty slim
compared to other breeds on this list. The reason why they made it to number 9 on our list is
because of their sheer height. This breed is the tallest of all dogs, even taller than the Great
Dane. Males often stand as tall as 34 to 35 inches from foot to shoulder blade and stand over 7
feet tall on their hind legs. They can weigh upwards of 140 pounds, and while standing on all
fours, the Irish Wolfhounds size can be easily comparable to a donkey’s.
Number 8. The Leonberger
The Leonberger is what you get when you mix the Newfoundland and the Saint Bernard, both
quite large breeds already. In the mid-1840s, Heinrich Essig of Leonberg, Germany, crossed
a Newfoundland with a Saint Bernard for four generations, then, just to make things a little bit
more interesting, added in a Pyrenean Mountain Dog to the mix. The result of these several
generations of breeding is a breed that stands between 27 to 31 inches tall and can weigh as
much as 170 pounds.
Quite unlike all the other large dog breeds that are on this list, the Leonberger wasn’t actually
bred for one specific purpose. Think of them as being jack of all trades; they do quite well in
everything from water rescue, to tracking, to hunting. If it is an activity that requires both
strength and smarts, the Leonberger is probably going to be good at it. This breeds primary purpose in life is to be a companion dog, and despite its massive size, they
are quite the teddy bears. To put it simply, they are perfect family dogs, a family dog that can
easily occupy an entire living room couch all by itself.
Number 7. The Caucasian Shepherd
This big dog is quite the specialist and was bred to do one thing and one thing only, and that is
to protect sheep from wolves, and any other predator that dares attack a shepherd’s flock.
However, even if these dogs are expert sheep bodyguards, they can and have been used to
protect other livestock.
The Caucasian Shepherd is extremely popular in Georgia which has always been the place to
go if you are looking for the purest of these breeds. Also known as Caucasian Ovcharka,
Caucasian Sheepdog, Kawkasky Owtscharka, or Kaukasische Schaferhund, Caucasian
Shepherd dogs are strongly boned, extremely muscular and, when well trained, quite even-
tempered.Of course, this breed makes it to this list because of its enormous size. They are big enough to
intimidate even a pack of wolves. Wolves most of the time will dare not attack the flock they are
guarding.
On the downside, Caucasian Shepherds are very territorial and have been known to attack
other strange dogs or even their same breed. Extreme caution should be exercised if you
choose this breed to be your family pet.
Now, at this point in time, we will stop looking at dog breeds in general, but rather look at
specific dogs who have become very famous for their size, starting with this very big dog with an
even bigger heart.
Number 6. Zeus the Great Dane
Great Danes are famously large dogs already. But, like with us humans, there will always be.

My parents owned a Great Pyrenees named Willie. He weighed 175 pounds at his heaviest. He was not overly tall but very thick and wide. He was a gentle giant. I owned one of his pups, a female named Dixie, for 10 years. She was 130 pounds. Best dogs I've ever known. Miss them both.

I just lost my beloved Newfoundland , he graced my life for over 9 years, nothing like this kind loving intellectual breed, they read your mind and never take their eyes off of you. I do rescue so I can’t choose but grateful when one like he was comes in my life.

I have two Tibetan Mastiffs, one is 60kg the other is 47kg, the largest recorded male is 98kg from Estonian bloodlines. They can be very gentle but remain protective and territorial even when well trained and socialized

I love dogs, but I feel really sorry for most of them, all the overbreeding is slowly ruining them. Let´s be honest, some of them look extremely deformed and uncomfortable.
Bull dogs are perfect example they have all sorts of health issues because of the way they've been bred.

I used to have a Newfoundland. One of the sweetest, gentle GIANTS there is. I named him Bear because the neighbor kids freaked out the first time they saw him and kept telling their Mom they just saw a bear in our yard lol. I'd love to get another one to play with my 3 Shih Tzu's :)

I raised my Tibetan Mastiff, Jack, from a very young pup. He was not huge, reaching 130 lbs, but he was the sweetest, most gentle, friendly dog I've ever been owned by. I had to keep him shaved since I live in Texas, so most did not recognize his breed. He was not aggressive, but very cuddly. I think the way they are raised has a lot to do with their behavior. I lost him about 2 years ago and my heart cries out for him daily. I would love to have another one.

I know this is a year ago but if you're still seeing this, you should NEVER SHAVE a double coated dog. Even if you live in a hot place. It's one of the general rule of taking care of a double coat dog.
@@nikniko2216 Jack was not a show dog needing a perfect coat. He was HOT. I had the carpet replaced with wood flooring in my apartment to help him keep cool. I kept my air conditioning very cool and bought him mats that chemically cool when layed on and he was still hot when not shaved. Regardless of the common held belief about double coated dogs, my concern for his comfort was tantamount to me. He was an inside dog and lived a comfortable life despite not having long guard hairs. So thanks for the advice, but no thanks.
I 'm now the proud owner of my 3rd Rescue Great Dane called Jackson, he's adorable and just smothers you with love. I love my Danes.

Thier both beautiful breeds, but god food can never be left anywhere in yoyr house im sure.
@@morganirvine2327 It can not. 🤣 But he is the absolute sweetest dog, very friendly to all people and animals, is a breeze to train, and overall very well behaved. He also loves water, and mud, so he'll often come back inside wet and dirty. He's adorable though, and very good with baths, so it's never much of an issue. 😂

I spent some time at a mansion in San Rafael, CA. The owner of the house had an Irish Wolfhound named Tuesday. Mostly she was affectionate and well behaved but when she was alarmed, her barks shook the walls of neighbours houses.

I mixed 2 of my favorite very large dog breeds... the Kangal and Saint Bernard! I call this mixed breed the - "Kanard" breed. Big, strong, and smart guard dog. Puppies were born on February 4, 2021.

They do KG in areas like UK and places that might be colonized by England . Their metrics are different than our “ pound “.
English Mastiff is the only one on this list I have owned. While oversleeping from a long night shift. My young son was able to open the front door and got out on our front lawn. Which was a busy street. My neighbor called to wake me up. There I found my English Mastiff named Bear preventing my young son from going into the street and barking at anyone who walked down the sidewalk. No telling how long he had been out there? But I always loved this dog for following my son to protect him. He gently knocked my son onto the grass and refused to let him proceed out to the street.

Well technically for him that’s gentle. He gently pulled his owner. A dog that’s not gentle means more attack dog, biting etc...most large dogs dunno their strength

They max out at 26 inches tall on the shoulder topline, not a very big dog. Most dogs in my neighborhood are toys or miniatures: Miniature Poodles, Yorkies, Miniature Schnauzers, French Bulldogs, Jack Russels, Italian Greyhounds, Corgis, Dandie Dinmont, King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Boston Terriers, Chihuahua, Pugs and so on. Effink midgets all of 'em.

I had to listen twice. Hulk doesn't weigh 134kg. According to the owner he weighs around 79kg - or 174 lbs.

Elaine Murphy - Coleman Great Danes are wonderful dogs! They are so gentle and loving and excellent with children. They don’t seem to realize how big they are and think they can fit in your lap lol. Thay can also be large couch potatoes. The Great Dane I had was a backseat driver lol. She liked to rest her head on my shoulder when I drove with her in the car. She was also afraid of all squeaky toys lol and would try to run between my legs when she heard one lol. She was a good dog.

The photo isn't photoshopped. It's just the way it was taken. The woman is WAY in the back and the dogs are up front. That's why the woman is in focus but the dogs are not. It's the same trick where people take a picture in front of the Eiffel Tower where it looks like they're holding it in their hand.

marlberg2963 Scooby Doo is a brown Great Dane with a few black spots. Fawn Great Danes are a tan color. My sister and I had brown Great Danes. Mine had a white chest and belly, white paws, white tipped tail, and a white stripe on the bridge of her nose. My sister’s dog was mostly all brown

Not familiar enough with the breed standard to make the determination beyond Harlequin and Merle (I've always wanted a Merle though as they are so striking) Current keeper and feeder of a Brindle 11 MO OEM and an 11 YO Black Newfie.
marlberg2963 I have been a fan of Scooby Doo since I was a little kid. I am also well aware of all of the colors of great Danes as I owned one before and had researched the breed. The color of Scooby Doo is a medium or chocolate brown with some black spots on his back and shoulders. Fawn Great Danes are a light tan or sometimes golden color with a black muzzle. You can look it up on the Internet by typing in fawn great Dane and it will bring up a description as well as pictures that will show this. Also a description Scooby doo per wiki “talking brown Great Dane[1] named Scooby” you can find that by typing in Scooby doo. He is brown not tan.
