Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
The man at the back of the queue was sent
To feel the smack of firm government
Lingered by the flyposter for a fight
It's the same story every night
I've been hurt and we've been had
You leave home and you don't go back
[Chorus]
Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee
[Verse 2]
Only last night I found myself lost
By the station called King's Cross
Dead and wounded on either side
You know it's only a matter of time
I've been good and I've been bad
I've been guilty of hanging around
[Chorus]
Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee
[Interlude]
[Bridge]
So I went looking out today
For the one who got away
Murder walking round the block
Ending up in King's Cross
Good luck, bad luck waiting in a line
It takes more than the matter of time
[Chorus]
Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee
[Interlude]
[Chorus]
Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee
[Outro]
And there's still no guarantee
There is still no guarantee

The older one gets, the better King's Cross sounds! What a timeless classic! ❤❤❤
i grew up near kings cross in the 1980s .listening to this 35 years later , this song still sends chills down my spine .This song is so beautiful
We are in one club. Im from Russia.❤
Absolutely brilliant...! As haunting as it was 30 years ago...
This song is wonderful. It gave me comfort during tough times.
This is surely one of the most beautiful pop pieces ever written
Love the imagery
yes!
Totally agree
These guys had so many; they were not one hit wonders.
So many brilliant album tracks as well as the hits.
"You leave home and you don't go back". Deeply haunting lyric line.
The first time i fell in love, back in the 80´s, this song was the anthem. And i actually had the opportunity to thank Neil Tennant for that in 2003 in Gothenburg. A great man he was.
I spent my youth listening to this song forty years ago, and I still listen to this song with the same feeling. A gem of a melody line.
You and me both
2024 and still listening to this beautiful.song.. its mint.
My favourite song of all time. As a 16 year old apprentice listening to PSB on my Sony Walkman little did I know as a 51 year old man I would still be a huge Pethead. Seen them many times and been lucky enough to meet them on several occasions. Hotspot is amazing and was looking forward to Dreamworld show in Glasgow. Just have to wait till next year. Stay safe Pethead"s everywhere.
JOHN VENTERS I am gonna call myself a “PetHead” from this very moment! Thank you, always wondered what I was!
im with you
Pethead it is 💜💜💜... what a magical thing to be... from 1986 and yes... up to right now in 2021 at 50... FIFTY 😁... can you even believe our age?😁
Pethead. Truly love that 💜💜💜
I used to listen to this on my Sony Walkman. I used walk all over Georgetown and Du Pont Circle back in the day.
So beautiful it makes me cry.
Hearing this, I’m 25 years old again and on a pub crawl in some German city. Wurzburg, Frankfurt, Augsburg, Munich, Stuttgart…great times, legendary song. Thank you 🙏🏾
A masterpiece. I'm a working classical musician and the arrangements in this song are simply genius.
I’d love to know more about why you think that, would you mind expanding? There’s always been something so, so beautiful about this arrangement for me and I don’t have the knowledge to understand why.
Ranks very highly atop their rather lengthy list of extraordinary compositions, agreed and agreed!
@@lucywear6700 Even though it wasn't my comment, I'd like to support it and elaborate: The Pet Shop Boys' arrangements are always crafted towards perfection. Neither is anything missing nor redundant. All decisions are made masterfully and with utter taste, just like a classical composer would write their score. The melodies are timeless and beautiful, even Mozart would have said "oh, thank you, I'll use that one". Not to mention their harmonies and lyrics. Just unpretentious class.
The best single they never released!! Brilliant song.
Simply one of the absolute best EVER PSB tracks.
Absolutely agree. It’s a tough call but I’d rate this as my all-time PSB song.
One of the best songs from PSB ever! Great great great!
I agree with you. Greetings from Spain.
How prophetic.
Absolutely favourite PSB track.
No other word to describe this track, Genius.
Why do PSB songs have such London vibes? I am from India and have been listening to PSB since 1994. And they remain my favourite.
This song is just genius musically lyrically artistically
Hearing this song makes you realize, music transcends all boundaries. I heard this as a school kid and it was etched in my mind forever. The song still generates the same feeling today after 35 years!
My favourite Pet Shop Boys track. The perfect closer for the best - in my opinion- Pet Shop Boys Album “Actually”.❤️
Always been my favourite song from the Actually album. Class.
Perfect song, perfect duo. PSB quality is amazing... live performances even today are second to none... they are so perfect. Thank you so much PSB.
I need to share a story about this track...I was a pupil of Gosforth High School and in my first year of English Literature GCSE I had to write a poem. I had nothing to come up with at all as like most kids I had a hatred of homework. I basically had to hand this poem in the next morning so I copied the lyrics of Kings Cross and handed it in....I got an 'A' and then had to read it out to the class....(my English Literature teacher was over the moon and thought it was one of the most insightful poems he'd ever heard..lol)..I have no evidence but my word, but this is a true story....Even better, in the last term of my GCSE a year later I did the same with It Couldn't Happen Here....I'm hoping teachers are a bit more hip to this these days....lol
I lived in London when this came out. It reminds me of roaming the streets looking for something to inspire me.
Still listening in 2021. Still hypnotizing like it was when I listened to it as a Teenager. Such Gems will never be made again...
2023
And there's still no guarantee.
Stuck in quarantine and still listening to Pet Shop Boys
WHO are the 29 individuals who did not adore this track???? We just need to talk
Truly amazing song. One of the very best.
This song makes me cry
My favourite song by the fellas. Amazing!
Mine too
One of the ones you forget, but actually as beautiful as the other PSB of the 80s
Never understood why this song was not released as a single. It's great, nostalgic, sad and fascinating.
Maybe cause they released Always on my mind and after that Heart from Actually, and maybe one more would be to many...
@@pcon71 They released "What have I done to deserve this", "Rent", "It's a sin" and "Heart" from "Actually". "Always on my mind" was on "Introspective" as long remix version. but it's true. the pet shop boys had simply too many hits at that time and therefore enough promo material. king's cross would have been a great hit single too
@@reneschmidt9799 And besides, their 2 first albums most material, existed from 1982 to 1985 in other recordings that failed to become hits. They were trying maybe for 2 years but totally failed. So they rerecorded some of their material with new versions, like West end girls released in 1985 but eventually become a hit late 1985 and early 1986. Their 3rd single Opportunities was a rerecording too, and it eventualky made it in its 2nd release. Its a sin was actually recorded in 84 but it was rerecorded and released in 1987 as we know it.
@@pcon71 very creative and productive artists 👍 such great hits only come about through hard work
They were approached to release it as a charity single to benefit the victims of the King's Cross Underground Station fire, but they declined.
One of the best, no, greatest albums ever to be recorded, every track a classic, The PetShop Boys, thank god we have you in our lives...
The audio here is just superb, thank you.
this song is a classic - you just get lost in it - wonderful
My life comes down to this song. All moments, all feelings in a single point. Everything I love and went through in my life. Tears have been falling for 33 years. She will always be with me.
I love PSB forever ❤
A masterpiece. It brings back memories very special when i was in high school ....unforgettable.....Greetings from Spain 🧡
We're in fine wine territory. The years pass, the flavour deepens. Still listening, still grateful.
Agreed and agreed, good sir. Best,
Very well said.
That’s a great analogy
How can a 25 year old guy and a 30 year old guy write such a timeless masterpiece? ...Beats me
They just have a charisma. Simple as that!
Θείκο χαρισμα φιλε!
they let it write
Bcoz it's a golden period of our childhood. Which we all miss alot.
vedic astrology answers this -they are give gifts to entertain us
I love this song!
Brilliant and chilling classic
Another reason PSB are a constant in my tapestry of sound.
Es ist einfach ein superschönes Lied. Was uns unser Leben lang erfreuen wird!
Hauntingly beautiful.
Best way to describe it.
So true
I love PSB. I've been a big fan since the early 80's. I had this album on cassette tape. I used to listen on my walkman and Sony boom box. Great memories. Thank you.
Му favorite song! With love from Russia! In 1988 I heard this amazing song on our USSR's radio Mayak and still this one is number 1! Thank you!!!
Is PSB popular in Russia? I know that PSB love to visit Russia, what is the conection, do you know something more about that?
@@ivanradojevic8887 Super popular. Not less than in 80's and 90's.
Mis PSB son conocidos en todo el mundo. Saludos desde la Ciudad de México 😍
PSB were then and are now super popular. We used to dress in red and make striped hats at parties in the 90s ))
I heard Shopping and Hit Music on Mayak radiostation back in 1988!!!! Im Russian.
Absolutely best of ever, you two pals are the best music group of all the time
Absolutly perfect. It should ve been released as a single
There are no words to describe this. I am just so grateful that it was given to us xxx
I still listen to King's Cross with the same pleasure as when I heard it 40 years ago... I'm 57 years old today and I love this song
Beautiful
Who's listening to this amazing song, 8th of march 2024 ❤️
May 2024 🎼🥃
May 24.
tooooooop!
June 2024 ❤
June 24
I borrowed this album in 1987 as a cassette from a friend, and like everybody else played it over and over again. My friend never got it back and I still have this cassette to this day.
It truly is a masterpiece of music, fantastically written. Kings Cross, It couldn't happen here and Rent are my favourites.
Long Live the Pet Shop Boys!
Find that friend.
It couldn’t happen here ❤
I visited London for the first time last month. I spent a lot of time in Marchmont St, Cartwright Gardens and overcame my claustrophobia descending down into KX to catch the Piccadilly line. Catching the LNER to York and back. I love that area, I don’t know why. I’m 53 now, I loved this song when I was 19 and even more now.
Favorite song💖💖💖
Pet Shop Boys. That's how long they've been here, that's how long they've been great, and they appeal to all generations.❤🇬🇧 just because you must them. Simply legends
They are the masters of sound imaging.
his piece of music is out of this world. Incomprehensible.
" Murder walking around the block " BRILLIANT !!!
I'm sure it's already been said but...written before the tragedy and never released in case of any misinterpretation. Their finest work..and that's saying something.
This was a great song..
One of my favorite songs ,thank you,PSB.
My favorie song :)
PSB will always be the best group around. Great song!
One of my many favourite PSB songs
Hauntingly beautiful 💗
Timeless❤
One of the very best PSB songs, I loved it as a kid and still do. I just love the melancholic chords they often use and the perfect melodies with the vocals can make for a fantastic song , even though it may seem haunting -- I find it uplifting somehow.
The album record Actually was for me in the 1980s ´my first purchased music album. And I was not disappointed. Its the most unlikely sounded record in the 80s. It was so different.
PSB sin dudas uno de los mejores duos de todos los tiempos, gracias por la música📀
Great song. Played a lot in my new apartment at night. Long live PSB

One of the greatest electronic music duos of all time, what a beautiful song this is.

Absolutamente maravilhosa😍😍

Still mesmerizing! A song that stays with you long after hearing... 🚅
Tears on my eyes!! 🙇🏻
Greetings from Poland with love ✨🇮🇩😀!
Pet shop boys forever
PSB loud on my headphones saw me through the lonely nights of my youth. Thank you, gents!
Legendary..!
This should have been released as a single. A beautiful track. A shame the album came out the same year as the Kings Cross fire.
Might be wrong but sure it was going to be as there's a video on here if you look it up but because it actually contains a fire out of respect they decided not to.
That video was actually from their movie It couldn't happen here in which the song was played.
You are right. I remember. Andre from germany
It was released before the fire. It wasn't about the fire but for me it was utterly prescient, haunting and a fitting tribute to all affected on that terrible day and forever.
Listening in South Florida, USA.
One of the best ❤
I am and have been a massive fan of the greatest Pop duo ever in the World! For years and years now and in my humble opinion, this gem and the song 'Confidential' (co written with Tina Turner) are their greatest achievements! Their masterpieces!
I want to thank my dad for introducing me to PSB
PSB music is like a soundtrack for life itself
Mila DZ.....new wave music in 80's ..*there was a time the good old time*
The richness of this song is better represented in the vinyl/cassette tape version.
I wonder why? The liner notes said that actually was a "digital album, digitally mixed and mastered".
And there's still no guarantee
The mystery goes on......
Great sounzzzz psb
"So I went looking out today, for the one who got away....." WOW. Beat that for a lyric anyone?
I hear a lot of things going on in this song… Bitter sweet melancholy, deep hanging skies and even a bit of „all cats are grey“ from The Cure… The song still feels like a part of me since over35 years ❤
Beautiful Track.
So great to hear one of PSB best track still getting airplay here in oz
forever and ever
I haven't herd this in ages.
Thank You!
Another of your best album tracks.
I loved it then & I love it now. A pethead is a pethead forever. 🤗🤗🤗
This with Victoria Day fireworks in the background through the trees at the schoolyard from the rooftop deck !!
Simply magnificent!!!
