They had 2 other families in their clan, they could've said something like Claire got injured or jay was injured and had to go help them.

"I'll just have a Kir Royale" - I wonder how many understand this joke ? A kir is a white wine with a dash of fruit cordial, a kir royale is champagne with the dash. So, after an earthquake, a sex-on-the-beach or an Americano may be too much, but he is not going to drop his standards to just a glass of wine or a beer.

@@tony16991 well, if there is an earthquake and your friend offers you a cocktail, you (as a polite guest) would say, oh, don't go to any trouble, I'll just have a glass of wine, or glass of water, or a coffee, or even better, I've just had breakfast, I don't need anything right now. But, he's Pepper, so he says, I'll just have a Kir Royale, which for him is slumming, but for a normal person, it's what you order on your Mum's special birthday celebration.

They didn't pour water on the floor to make it look like water damage though. And Mitchell should have faked a limp or even remained sitting since he was supposed to be injured. But I also didn't see the entire episode, so maybe those things were addressed but not in this clip.
They had a mop in the background. Also in this scene it looked like he was limping.
