Loved Judy Garlsnd! ...She should have won the Oscar for A Star Is Born!! . Multi talented: . She could act, sing & dance..... Died much to young.. Thanks for posting! .. 🙏😄
Yes, a huge victim of the studio system...and her mother. Uppers to get thru the day, downers to help her sleep. All gifts from the studios. She was looked on as an asset to market and make money for. Nontheless, one of the greatest talents ever to grace stage and screen. My father's generation adored her, and it was my father who got me to appreciate Garland, Sinatra Nat King Cole, and more. Thanks, dad, for the musical education!!
Great song, by one of the greatest. Listen to her live performance of “Old Man River” from her television show. A powerhouse of a voice. One of the lines from the Song. “I’m tired of living, but scared of dying”. That was her tragic life. Died at 47. Thank you for this. 👍
She always gave 110+% every time she sang. She made you feel her pain in everyword she sang when she wanted to or she could sing a ditty have have fun too.
To quote her daughter, "she had tragedies in her life but she wasn't tragic!" Judy had a sensational career and had a great many highs and amazing sense of humour.
Love how you point out the excellence of the band! I feel that Judy's greatness really challenged the orchestras which accompanied her, regardless of their own abilities or fame. There are recordings with drummers, trumpet players, pianists, etc, playing out of their heads, and Judy can still be heard above them. As you state, incredible power from her diaphragm, as well as perfected breathing techniques, and vocal chords which were conditioned to singing powerfully, lightly, and sustainably. Add to that other-wordly mix, Judy possessed a throb, almost a vocal, musical cry which brought emotion and depth to her performances. Judy is an experience, one that I never tire of.
Great choice, Harri! I've been a huge Judy Garland fan since I first read a biography of her in 1975 when I was 13. And my favorite film of all time is Judy's "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), which I also saw for the first time that same year. You nailed it when you said her voice had power, vulnerability and emotion.
So glad you are doing one of the all time legends from the past. Her career spanned 40 years. "The Man that Got Away" is a torch song & was used in the 1954 version of the film "A Star Is Born". I think everyone has seen the classic movie "The Wizard Of Oz" where she sung "Over The Rainbow". Hard to believe she was only 17 years of age (83 years ago). A lot of the singers today can't hold a candle to her talent.
What a fitting choice! This upcoming Friday June 10th marks what would have been Judy's 100th birthday! This is the initial performance of what became one of her signature songs (though Somewhere Over the Rainbow remained her key song) and was written especially for her by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin. A Star is Born has been remade twice since this (and this was a remake of the original 1937 film-a non-musical that starred Fredric March and Janet Gaynor) once in the 70's with Barbra Streisand (even though I'm an enormous Streisand fan it's an awful film) and recently with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga (better than the Babs version but not as good as Judy's). A word of warning about this one. After it was released the studio wanted to add more showings so cut out crucial parts of the film, it was restored in the 80's but some of that footage was lost though the entire soundtrack was found. To compensate stills from the lost scenes were inserted over the dialog portions (it doesn't last too long but it helps to be prepared when watching so they aren't as jarring.) To explore her work further I'd recommend both her performance of "Old Man River" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" from her 60's television show. By the way Liza is pronounced Lie-za not Lee-za.
In the early 1960s my older sister had a double (vinyl) album Judy at Carnegie Hall. I loved listening to it. I was able to find it on CD a few years ago. If you enjoy her music, you should give it a listen to. I love your reactions. Thank you for sharing.
I remember hearing the comedian Alan King talk about opening for Ms. Garland, I think in Vegas. He said he'd watch from the wings & get goosebumps as this song started up & she began the show with it. I think it's one of her very best & maybe my personal favorite. I just wish the lady had had a happier, calmer life.💙
Sublime. There was a pastiche of Judy performing this song, cut with Aretha Franklin doing "Til You Come Back to Me," both live performances from Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Absolutely fabulous. Wonder where I put that.
I’m glad you didn’t hesitate for a moment to say the word “jazz.” All her life she wanted to sing jazz, but her producers never liked the idea. She used a lot of blue notes.
This is a clip from the movie “A Star Is Born”. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance ( she was robbed”. But most singer would lip sync to the playback, but not her… no matter how many takes they would do, she would belt it out along with the playback. People on the set would just stop and watch.. said it was like a concert
One of the greatest popular (standard) songs ever written, and with a perfect accompaniment. From the 'golden age' of music (writers): Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Kern, is there a writer today who can compare? Absolutely wonderful.
Thanks for sharing your listening reaction to my favorite singer, the incomparable Judy Garland. I recall reading that Garland’s performance of this song from the 1954 motion picture, A Star is Born was shot sans rehearsal and made with one take. BTW, you also reacted to another of Garland’s performances from this same film, “Get Happy,” the song she performs in Tuxedo top, Sinatra hat (your description) gorgeous legs (again, your description) and heels.
there are three versions of this scene, all made for this movie. They did dub her with the prerecorded version in the finished version, but she sang every version live. Get Happy is from Summer Stock, not A Star Is Born. Here's the first one ruclips.net/video/Wpl2NDEURWw/видео.html
Judy garland was a beast .. her level of delivering an emotion in a song is impeccable…. I can just imagine being in a smoke filled bar dimly lit with a cigarette and brandy
The first movie of A Star is Born was 1937. It starred Janet Gaynor and Frederick March playing the two lead roles. It was not a musical. Not only did Judy and Liza sing, but Judy's other daughter Lorna Luff is a talented singer as well.
Thanks for this reaction. Judy, one of my favorite singers. The power in her voice is unbelievable, especially when you consider she was under 5 feet tall and a little over 100 lbs.
A Star is Born has been remade several times in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Frederick March, in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, my personal favorite, in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, and finally, in 2018 with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
4 talented people in the family. Judy, 2nd husband Vinvent Minnelli (director), Liza (with a long "i"), and Lorna Luft, another wonderful singer. Judy is widely known today as the Greatest Entertainer Ever, and justly so. Great review, thank you! ❤
Posters have mentioned Judy singing Old Man River. Harri, you should react to William Warfield singing Old Man River in the movie Show Boat. Such a powerful voice will knock your socks off.

I just watched the movie which this performance was from. My jaw was on the floor while watching the full version of this. It was in 4k. I think her performance in that film alone shows her true star power.
Great song! Tremendous voice! Another you should listen to is Eydie Gorme' (pronounced E-dee Gor-may). One of the best ever!! So was her husband, Steve Lawrence. Each had great solo careers, and together, the magic they created on stage made them the top nightclub act in the world for many years, and there is a large of amount of wonderful records by Steve (Portrait Of My Love, 1961), by Eydie (My Funny Valentine, 1959), & by Steve & Eydie (We've Got Us, 1960, & Through The Years, 1982). The songs I mentioned are my favorites, but there are many, many more to choose from. Do yourself a favor you'll always be glad you did -- listen to Steve Lawrence. Listen to Eydie Gorme. Listen to Steve & Eydie. You'll love what you discover! Just a sneak peek -- this is Steve & Eydie doing an incredible medley of Gershwin songs -- IMO, possibly the best 15 minutes of recorded music. And is case you're not familiar with the Gershwin name, George & Ira were brothers who comprised one of the most prolific & successful songwriting teams in the history of the world, despite the fact that George died at the way-too-young age of 38, in 1937. Yes, that's correct. George was thirty-eight years old when he died in 1937, & he's still considered the King of all songwriters. Listen to this medley & you'll know why. And you'll why Steve & Eydie remained popular until their retirement, shortly before Eydie died in 2013, at the age of 84, at which time they had been married 55 years!! This was recorded 1975. I believe that Ava Gardners voice was dubbed by Ann Warren for the movie. Ms. Warren dubbed many of the stars voices. Natalie Wood in Gypsy. Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, etc.
This scene is why in my humble opinion this is the UNDESPUTED BEST of the now FOUR adaptations of the story known to movie goers for almost a HUNDRED YEARS now as A Star Is Born. Elvis might have made Streisand's version a contender with me but there is still to this day no one, other than her eldest daughter and yes I've seen both daughters perform, who can do what Judy Garland did for more than 40 years starting at the age of just 2½.
This is correct. The 1937 version with Fredric March and Janet Gaynor was a partial remake of the 1932 "What Price Hollywood" starring Constance Bennett.
Not many of today's singers could sing over a brass section in tune. Her talent is obvious I just don't like this song choice. Barbara S. on Judy Garland: "We fell in love with each other and we became good friends afterward. She was just a wonderful, vulnerable creature with this glorious voice."
Speed back in the day must have been pure and powerful. No wonder so many artists became addicted to it, especially when MDs were recommending/prescribing it for energy back in the 30s-60s. Those vintage mainstream magazine ads for pills that equaled pure jet fuel were profound. they usually showed a frazzled housewife before and a dazzling beauty afterward. Unfortunately, amphetamines had the opposite effect. Made one look hollow and dead for lack of rest.
Aretha Franklin once called Judy the greatest soul singer ever. Coming from Aretha, well thats incredible. She also names Judy as her one her favorite singers.
@@JohnRS100 True... one would certainly have to hear this song completely to know how to spell Liza's last name. Without hearing the entire song, how would anyone know? That never occurred to me.
Judy was completely robbed of that oscar! Jack Warner was so greedy and he just had to have that movie being shown 100 times a day. The way they cut into the original film was horrid. Putting the film back together was quite hard. Damn that Grace Kelly for Country Girl!!! There will never be another diva is great as Judy Garland! Ever. To me she truly was one of the greatest live entertainers of the 20th century. A once in a century Talent❤❤❤❤
A Star is born has been remade four times. I LOVED the Judy Garland version as well as the Streisand version. The other two don't do it for me....especially the new Gaga one.
One of the greatest movie performances of all time by a lady actress and she got gypped out of an Academy award by a really poor performance by grace Kelly. At the time it was called the greatest robbery since Brinks.
Absolutely no one could deliver a song like the great Judy Garland.
The single greatest singing performance in movie history. Awesome, unbelievable.
Loved Judy Garlsnd! ...She should have won the Oscar for A Star Is Born!! . Multi talented: .
She could act, sing & dance.....
Died much to young..

Judy proves here she could nail you to the wall.
The greatest of all time. Judy will never be forgotten and will always be relevant. ❤️
This film is in my top five the best version of it , how the heck she didn't get the Oscar for this completely astounds me.
She was such a talent. A triple threat, sing, dance, and act. The Hollywood machine chewed her up. Fantastic pick! Wonderful reaction Harri!
Yes, a huge victim of the studio system...and her mother. Uppers to get thru the day, downers to help her sleep. All gifts from the studios. Love Old man river, incredible!☮️❤️
Every time I see the clip. It blows me away. 👍
This is THE song for me. From what I think is her best film.
I always like to watch Judy Garland. My mother liked her so much and thought that she was just so cute. When I was born, my mother named me after her.
She always gave 110+% every time she sang. She made you feel her pain in everyword she sang when she wanted to or she could sing a ditty have have fun too.
An unbelievable talent. Her voice was mesmerizing. R.I.P. Judy.♥️
Her music is definitely before my time but she had a beautiful voice and was just damn talented
She had such a tragic life but what a voice. She started so young also. Great choice Patrick and Harri.
What happened to her that was tragic? Dang I don’t think I wanna know
Her life was not tragic. Yes there were profound difficulties for her but it was an absolutely extraordinary life. Don't perpetuate that MYTH!
To quote her daughter, "she had tragedies in her life but she wasn't tragic!"
Judy had a sensational career and had a great many highs and amazing sense of humour.

Great choice, Harri! I've been a huge Judy Garland fan since I first read a biography of her in 1975 when I was 13. Just mad gargantuan, emotive vocal qualities to come from such a diminutive lady. Extraordinary talent. That vibrato?! 👏

YOU MUST see her sing "THE BATTLE HYM OF THE REPUBLIC" as a tribute after JFK was assassinated. Incredible.
My favorite performance by her by a mile...
That was the way she approached most of the songs she sang. All that power in that 4’11” frame.
For me, it's Judy's lovely, warm, throbbing vibrato that absolutely killed every song in her repertoire.
Hollywood royalty. Never to be matched.

@@akrenwinkle I didn’t get that far into the song.
@@JohnRS100 True... one would certainly have to hear this song completely to know how to spell Liza's last name. Without hearing the entire song, how would anyone know? That never occurred to me.
Check out some music from The Judy Garland Show. Especially with Barbra Strisand and Liza.
Her version from "Live at Carnegie Hall" is even better. 🙂
Judy gave blood pleasing her audience, she leaves you in pieces reminding you you’re just human after all.
The pain in her voice....it breaks my heart. Billie Holiday had that too.
Mint Rushmore of American female singers Billie Holliday, Mahalia Jackson , Aretha Franklin and Judy Garland
I agree with u about sounding like Billie Holiday. Judy Garland was a fan of Billie Holiday.
A Star is born has been remade four times. I LOVED the Judy Garland version as well as the Streisand version. The other two don't do it for me....especially the new Gaga one.
It’s Liza with a z, not Lisa with an s. One of Liza’s popular songs!☮️❤️
One of the greatest movie performances of all time by a lady actress and she got gypped out of an Academy award by a really poor performance by grace Kelly. At the time it was called the greatest robbery since Brinks.
Judy was only 4’11 too.
Frank Sinatra said it best, "We will all be forgotten, but never Judy".
😍
Look up "Liza With a Z" and listen to it.
She supposedly did this song in one take....
I absolutely love Liza but let’s all just be real right here. Liza could never. Not now. Not in he prime. And that’s the truth.
