- This is a review of the Effectrode PC-2A Compressor. A 100% analog tube powered circuitry that produce the same, smooth tones as vintage studio compressor machines. I'm using a Fender Strat with EMG DG20 pickups into a Laney CUB12. PLEASE NOTE that the RUclips compression adds to the compression produced by the pedal. See the full review on Gilmourish.Com.

This is BY FAR the best comp there is. I have used several compressors, including the CS-2, Demeter compulator and dynacomp. This one is magic. Especially when set up for a very mild compression.
Best compressor I’ve ever had, amazing on Les Paul, Strat, Tele, bass and even vocals! I love that it looks so plain and does an incredible job. Best compressor in the world, in my humble opinion.
Your playing is perfect. You are getting better and better. Never heard so much emotion besides David. Brill stuff!!! You are the man!
Wow, you can definitely hear the sweetness this comp imparts.
Another excellent video, Bjorn.
Great Tone, Great Recording...Sounds Amazing.
sounds amazing
This pedal is fantastic
Great guitar player and sound !
It's just a short snippet I've recorded for the reviews :)
Thank you!
Could you put a link of that song that played in the intro, please ?
Thanks in advance :)
Hello Bjorn,
I read your review on your website regarding gilmour and how he sometimes uses more than one compressor at a given time.
1. I am wondering what would be the purpose of using 2 different compressors in a signal chain, or what am i trying to accomplish?
2. Also how would i set them up? Place them back to back to each other or one at the beginning and one at the end of my pedal board?
3. I currently have the MXR dynacomp script re-issue and this one, and am wondering if i should just use the effectrode in my chain and forget about the dynacomp altogether or utilise the dynacomp in some other way?
Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)
Ben
I don't know why David used two compressors, he's never talked about that, but stacking compressors adds sustain and different types of compression will add different dynammics and compress different frequencies. Stacking compressors is also a trick many slide and lap steel players use to get more sustain.
Compression should be used with care and you should only apply it if it's needed. Many people will use compression just because they've seen others do it but that can ruin the dynamics of your tone. It can be used as an effect, but it's more a tool used to enhance the tone.
@@gilmourishofficial thanks for your expertise, as always much appreciated! :)
I use 2 comps.I have one on all the time for a smooth, studio sound which is on all the time at the front of the fx chain (Demeter Compulator).I then use a 2nd comp (a really old EH Blackfinger) for those '60's Kinks/Who/Shel Talmy times when I'm playing my Ricky 12 and I want that pumping squashy sound which I switch in/out on a TB looper. Works great.
Having just given away my CS-2 (which I bought new in 1988) to a younger aspiring guitarist friend, I might just consider this as an alternative.
Come on don't try to trick us Jedi.
There are no cables going in this unit.
!!
I have seen a hundred pictures of these PC2A's and still can't tell if they're white or gray.
They're neither-theyre Grey! 🤣
@@sharonlee4773 Ahhh hah
...so how come all the knob twiddling when it isn't even plugged in?
Jayx3 I only had one camera at that point so to cross filming.
Love it wondering wich would have more Gilmour tone this or mxr dynacomp
Massive difference in price
thank you jim boss cs1 or cs2
I must be either deaf or dumb, but I cannot hear or understand what the compressor does.
That’s kind of the point. A compressor is more of a tool than an effect. It’s very subtle, although you can set it up for extreme compression too, and more of a feel rather than something you’ll instantly hear. RUclips is not the best place to demonstrate compressors as the videos gets very compressed too.
@@gilmourishofficial I guess I really need to buy one to understand and hear it :)
does not sound clean, its sound is loaded, it turns out a very specific compressor, but it has the same flashy highs as a tube driver which it should pair very well with.
I would go with, Boss CS-1 or CS-2
I would. If I wanted no dynamics and lots of noise!
:'(
You don't have to see the cables... Move along... :)
Cali76CD is better. I have both
Really? i am considering between those two
Better how?
better is a relative thing. Both the Effectrode PC-2a and the Cali76CD are among the best there is for compression and both are studio grade hence the higher costs relative to most other compressor pedals. Depending on the style of your playing and what you're wanting the compressor to do, you can't go wrong with the tried and true 1176 and LA-2A compression techniques. I prefer the LA-2A for acoustics and vocals but the 1176 for other things. Thus I'd prefer to have both! We can dream right? :-)
