Absolutely. It's documented on my site www.gilmourish.com 😉 The idea here was to show that you can use the Phase 90 for different tones and, in fact, Dvaid did use the Phase 90 for Breathe dunring the 1974-75 leg of the Dark Side tour. The UniVibe was eventually taken off the board.

Well done! Great demo! I have the Phase 90 script but not the custom shop version. I also use a Fulltone DejaVibe mkII and a Leslie G37 for the rotary sounds. Thanks again for all you do!
Script 90 with 82K resistors in it is my overall favorite. I love the Small Stone V3 too with the volume drop mod and mix mod. Phase 45 is also classic and hard to beat. Univibe is legendary who doesn't love that sound. The DOD FX20B is on that list too, terribly underrated and sounds great. DOD201 and 490 are also great, but very similar to the 45 and 90.
I’m a keyboard player, and I remember picking up my first electric guitar back in the 90’s. Just for fun and to expand my sound palate. I didn’t realize it at the time, but all the pedals and effects I was drawn to were the ones that gave me the most Gilmour-esque sound. Phaser has always been my favorite effect, and all my effects give me that PF tone. I even bought EMG SA’s for my Strat back in the 90’s before I knew that’s what David was using! It wasn’t until the last couple of years with everyone openly chasing after David’s tone that I realized that’s exactly what I was doing back then!
Favourite phaser would be the ibanez soundtank boss clone 3 knob. Just bought a vintage phase unbranded pedal mxr clone. Tone sucking woble monster I thought would be easy with just one knob but...
This is why I love my Line 6 Helix. All the Gilmour amps and effects are already built in. Very easy to build the song changes such as Shine On You Crazy Diamond with the Snapshot feature.
I love the phaser in the '75 live versions of the songs. When I first was getting into Floyd, I bought the Boston Garden concert on CD at my local music shop. I had only heard Dark Side of the Moon at that time, so my first ever introduction to Shine On, Dogs, Sheep, Cigar, etc. was from this concert. I loved that phaser tone, and I still do. My favorite is You Gotta Be Crazy. Beautiful sounds.
I had a catalinbread many worlds phaser for 2 weeks , I did not like it whatsoever I messed with it on every setting possible it had alot of options to switch between and just couldn’t get it to sound good it wasn’t usable in my opinion. Sent it back before the 30 return time was up and picked up a phase 90 and it’s a world of difference so much better like right away with in 5min I knew I made the right decision returning the catalinbread and getting the mxr . $199 catalinbread vs $90 for phase 90 so I got some money back too but spent it on a pack of new strings , a sweet korn shirt and some new Velcro for my pedal board all n all money well spent
Blackout Effectors Whetstone and their Sibling as well. The Whetstone can get classic MXR tones, as well as Uni-Vibe, Rotary, Vibrato, and even some Chorus sounds. All analog, and it has four settings to also do Ring Mod effects. The Sibling I use as a tone sculptor, as it is an Optical Phaser, and has a great Volume boost, with ability to go below the 50/50 mix, so it just adds some flavor.
Phaser as early in the signal chain as possible works best. Before overdrives always makes it sound better. Even Van Halen had it before his Marshall amp.
Doesn't always sound better. Depends on how you want the phase to sound. I have it in my loop of an es8 and moving it before and after the preamp I actually liked it in the loop better. To each their own.
That Pedal Show did a good comparison video recently which included a Binson, the Boonar and the Strymon Volante. The Volante hit me as being likely the most versatile of this style of delay pedal, and on the strength of that, I bought the Strymon. I am very, very pleased with it. It would be wonderful to see Bjorn demoing the Boonar vs the Volante. I suspect the Boonar is perhaps a little closer to the original Binson, but the Volante is also amazing, and again, likely more versatile.
Hi Love your videos and wondered if you might have a look at this lap steel slide guitar. The price is certainly good and any reports I have seen so far. But your expert eye and ear would be appreciated. As you must have guessed I am after that classic David Gilmour slide like the intro to Breath. So taken up by Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) riffs and sounds I wanted to try his iconic slide guitar sounds. Those of you in the States will find this under the Rogue name who I am told is the actual manufacturer in the east. I intend to tune it for open, E with lots of reverb, as that suits my type of music and fret board knowledge. Your time appreciated Mike
Had it and replaced it with a mxr 95. Since I leave the knobs untouched when I get the right tone out of them I didn't notice that much of a difference..!
I’m an unabashed phase junkie... and yet I don’t have a Phase 90! I do have phasers that can get that... Shannon phaser is a good example. Shout out to Mojohand Nebula, it is a must have
I have yet to find a Phaser pedal that's worth buying and does NOT add tone of noise to my signal...! Have gone through 3, I repeat THREE, Phase 90 Script - battery died within 10 days without using them less than 30-mins. Keely Phaser/Flanger noisy as hell, Moor couldn't dial any usable tone same for the Flanger, don't even go near the super noisy Boss pedals. The list goes on and on... etc. etc. etc. Effectrode makes UniVibe, but I wish they or CostaLab would make a Phaser or Flanger. I would buy it in a heart beat since my base tone is through Effectrode pedals colored with light CostaLab Chorus.
Sounds to me that you might have a noise issue somewhere else in your rig that's amplified by these pedals. Yes, the 74 script reissue phaser has some noise but that's the nature of that old circuit. My experience with the other pedals have been very positive.
I found peace with the led script model, I sold the led block logo because it was too invasive. The script model has a truly vintage, balanced and more versatile character.
Have it, and it sounds right. Script mode before any dirt although I use it mostly on clean sounds. For the grit, on the 8th day, God gave us Univibe... :)
id just like to say something interesting with what ive found with shine on you crazy diamond and david gilmour it seems that almost all of his "clean" tones either aren't actually clean and have a slight drive to them or they are completely clean and straight into the mixing desk another brick in the wall pt1 is mixing desk and delay the first 2 solos of shine on you crazy diamond are straight into the mixing desk, but when he plays the 4 notes, it has the master volume up so that it drives the output tubes, warming up the phaser and making it a little more subtle and giving a more ethereal tone so if you want to get a good shine on you crazy diamond tone, you will want to add some kind of overdrive after the phase 90, because otherwise the phaser is just too prominant in the 4 notes bit and the third solo of the song, you need to also place a coloursound powerboost before the phaser for the 3rd solo, but you still keep the amp at a high volume to drive it a bit there are very few instances i can think of where in the studio he is using a hiwatt completely clean with no drive, i think pigs might be the only time during the rotating speakers riff that he plays, but who knows, maybe that was straight in the yamaha and mixing desk my point is, if you want to get good david gilmour tones, either turn your amp up or add more gain to your amp with the gain knob or an overdrive pedal as some sort of boost i suspect that live he does the same but has his volume knob rolled down to make it clean and then he might roll the volume back up when he needs to, that or he just has it set clean so he has that versatility, though i suspect he had it rolled down during live in pompei. in echoes, the cleans are really clean, but there are some parts that seem slightly boosted and he didn't have the powerbooster then, so thats what makes me think that. just try it, ive been doing it for a while and it seems to work for me
Great observations. This is covered in detail on my site www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=5682. David has recorded his guitars straight into the mixing console more times that one should think. Shine On intro, Another Brick 1 the solo on 2, Coming Back to Life etc... Tube compression and EQ in those old desks makes all the difference from lining the guitar into a modern sound interface.
I'm guessing that Gilmourish does not publish tabs due to copy write issues? Looking for some reliable tabs for One of These Days. Can anyone point me in the right direction? On a more relevant note, I have recently purchased the Keeley Dark Side pedal which I am quite happy with. This purchase was largely inspired by a review that you published on RUclips.
My favorite phaser is the Earthquarker Devices Grand Orbiter. I love how it has more control over the effect in comparison to something like the Phase 90. It has Depth, speed, resonance, and sweep knobs with a speed toggle that changes the speed knob from slow, stationary, and fast and a vibrato switch to kill your dry signal. I still love the iconic sound of the Phase 90 though and i completely understand how its simplicity is one of its strengths. Definitely a fantastic pedal to have in one's collection or on their board.
I notice the knob pretty much stays at around 11:30 o'clock for most of the video on most of the songs until you get to the rotary part. That seems to be the sweet spot of this pedal, especially for those Gilmour tones and songs. Although this pedal sounds great no matter where the rate is set, but the lower speeds really nail that univibe vibe. Would love to hear Have A Cigar!!! Can't believe you left that one out Bjorn! Is this leading up to a Phase 90 pt.2 video perhaps? Hmm.... 😜
I've done tons of clips with Have a Cigar so I thought I'd left that one out this time. The Phase 90 can do lots of different tones. Setting it at 8:30 nails those Van Halen tones. Cheers!
@@gilmourishofficial oh no worries jk, I've seen several vids where you play that riff and you do it well! I always wanted to learn that one, i think it's one of his most funkiest moments that's what I love about it. He really uses that effect to it's full potential all over that album in particular. A very prominent early 70s sound indeed. I always wondered if the sounds on "Time" and "Breathe" were created with a phaser or a univibe, or maybe both? I know there was also a strong Leslie influence as well... which adds a strong chorusing and rotary effect into the mix. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind for the EVH tones, the "brown sound"! I recently required an all original vintage Phase 90 from 1974 in great condition! It sounds amazing! So mellow and warm and groovy and organic sounding, and the effect is alot more subtle and less dramatic/overbearing than the modern recreations and incarnations.
I went looking for a Phase 90 after I read a while back that you recommend it also for doubling for Univibe tones. Ended up with the Van Halen MXR Phase 90 with the vintage/modern switch. I think about half my pedal board was based on your recommendations, actually :D
Have you compared the MXR Van Halen phase next to the custom shop phase 90. I think the Van Halen phase has a 'script' button that is supposed to make it sound more vintage. Your demo was great.
Thanks! Yes, the VH is very similar. The CS has hard wire bypass, which rolls off some high end, but they also got one with led and true bypass, which I assume, is more or less identical to the VH.
Thank you. As always very good video. Liked how you did dogs, in standard tuning, which I’ve read maybe Dave was tuned down on the studio ver to some D9 type chord. Okay so my question is about your 74 reissue P90, mine seems faster at 11 o clock than yours did.... because mine is not a reissue? Bought mine new in like 2005.
Thanks! Yes, David tuned down his guitar in D but, which makes a considerable difference to the tone but no reason why it can’t be played in standard tuning for a quick jam :) I’m sure there are small variations as to how the pots are aligned on these pedals.
gilmourish RIIS thanks, yeah I’d like to slow mine down a bit, i rarely take it higher than 9 o clock ... Dogs, one of the best PF songs - need a tab for that in standard. Did you get a chance to see Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets? I find myself enjoying that early floyd more and more. Saw last week in St Louis. Was great.
Also at the 1:09 mark. What is this part. I love playing this bit now all the time. I just don’t know if it’s a Floyd riff or one of yours haha. Thanks.
As a huge Van Halen fan the phase 90 with the evh stripes is a no brainer for me. I use it for VH I tones mostly, but also sometimes use it for slower clean stuff.
Hello, I just bought a PHASE90 M101. Big disappointment: It distorts the mid-bass. The. notes clash especially on medium and high speeds. Maybe the new PHASE 90 M101s no longer sound as good on the clean as they do for GILMOUR pieces like the ones you play in the video. I didn't think there was such a big difference. What do you suggest me? PHASE 90 SCRIPT (that's enough) PHASE 90 74 CUSTOM SHOP OTHER Surely in addition to your advice I will try them in the shop if possible. An abbarccio. Thank you.
The M101 is a more modern sounding 4-stage phaser, with a bit more mids and higher output, which often makes it distort. I prefer the script models for David's tones. The custom shop is a replica of the original, while the standard script is the same pedal with true bypass and led.
There is something truly magical with the way Gilmour plays and you do capture that very well here!
Thank you!
Totally agreed with the phaser before dirt. When I put them after dirt they sound really over the top and domineering. Put them before and there's all the madness of a phaser with a lot of subtlety which I like.

id just like to say something interesting with what ive found with shine on you crazy diamond and david gilmour
it seems that almost all of his "clean" tones either aren't actually clean and have a slight drive to them or they are completely clean and straight into the mixing desk

the first 2 solos of shine on you crazy diamond are straight into the mixing desk, but when he plays the 4 notes, it has the master volume up so that it drives the output tubes, warming up the phaser and making it a little more subtle and giving a more ethereal tone
so if you want to get a good shine on you crazy diamond tone, you will want to add some kind of overdrive after the phase 90, because otherwise the phaser is just too prominant in the 4 notes bit and the third solo of the song, you need to also place a coloursound powerboost before the phaser for the 3rd solo, but you still keep the amp at a high volume to drive it a bit
there are very few instances i can think of where in the studio he is using a hiwatt completely clean with no drive, i think pigs might be the only time during the rotating speakers riff that he plays, but who knows, maybe that was straight in the yamaha and mixing desk
my point is, if you want to get good david gilmour tones, either turn your amp up or add more gain to your amp with the gain knob or an overdrive pedal as some sort of boost
i suspect that live he does the same but has his volume knob rolled down to make it clean and then he might roll the volume back up when he needs to, that or he just has it set clean so he has that versatility, though i suspect he had it rolled down during live in pompei. in echoes, the cleans are really clean, but there are some parts that seem slightly boosted and he didn't have the powerbooster then, so thats what makes me think that.
just try it, ive been doing it for a while and it seems to work for me
Great observations.
Just downloaded your album from iTunes. Very impressive on first listen. Definitely one for a walk in the sun with headphones 🎧 🎸👍
Awesome! Thanks for the support!
Congratulations Bjorn. Great sounds!!!
Thanks!
It takes a Kiss guy to play Gilmour the right way, Ace would be proud of you 😉
Ha ha, thank you!
@@gilmourishofficial Both bands are great to see live!
I have an MXR Phase 90(newer version).
Great T shirt!
I did the R28 mod to my block Phase 90 and still prefer it after overdrive. Maybe it's because of my OD or my amp.
Nice Hagstrom Swede in the background!
Yes! My main stage guitar. Love it!
Thank you Bjorn. I really enjoy your tone videos. One question: Because the MXR 90 doesn’t have a mix knob is the MIX 100%?
You could say that, yes. The mix of the effect is unchangeable. You can only change the Rate of the effect.
its at 50% if it were at 100%, it would essentially be a vibrato
It's at 50% for maximum effect.
Nice job! Do you think the phaser on the keeley darkside sounds the same as the phase 90?
Yes, that's a 4-stage phaser.
From the sound of it, I think have a cigar might’ve used a phaser as well?
Yes, he used the Phase 90 on that.
I get pretty good Gilmour tones with my R28-modded block Phase 90... Love that pedal so much
Congratulations on the new album!!!!!
Thank you!
Setting for shine on you ? Delay, muff, reverb, ?
See my site for a full rundown of the WYWH album

Sounds awesome!
That's an official script tone !
This phase alone I like
I notice the knob pretty much stays at around 11:30 o'clock for most of the video on most of the songs until you get to the rotary part.
What song is that riff from - starting at 1:07 and turning out to Reggae at 1:20?
That's a rhythm figure from Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts 6-9
Just found your channel ...really cool! I'm going to need a T-SHIRT
Dogs is just friggin beautiful
Was great.
My favorite video for ethereal guitar sounds
Also at the 1:09 mark. What is this part. I love playing this bit now all the time. I just don’t know if it’s a Floyd riff or one of yours haha. Thanks.
That’s David’s rhythm playing during Rick’s synth solo/melody on Shine On 6-9 right after the verse 😉
@@gilmourishofficialyou’re a gentleman. Thank you very much. The info you provide is spectacular. 😊
Hi why are you using a laney amp?
Hell yah my dude you nailed the tones. I have a modern phase 90 that I snippes the r28 out of it and I love it!
How is the P-95 or P-90 script compared to this one and the block P-90? There's so many to choose from!
The block logo has a slightly more mid range and output. A more modern tone perhaps. These script models has a vintage tone, smoother and creamier.
@@gilmourishofficial Thank you for your input and videos. I went with the P-95 and it sounds great and has the script mode too.
Really Vinatge 30 speaker work for hiwatt not so bright? Do you recommended The Tonker speaker as compare to weber fc12, fane f70 and vintage 30
As a huge Van Halen fan the phase 90 with the evh stripes is a no brainer for me. I use it for VH I tones mostly, but also sometimes use it for slower clean stuff.
Excuse me for stupid question. Could you tell what compositions you are playing after 5:00?
That’s Breathe and Dogs 👍
@@gilmourishofficial Exactly ! Thanking you. And thanking you so much for such explanation how to emulate David's sound.
You have great taste in gear
The outtake at 0:53 is awesome. Dang...I was born with fat, stubby fingers! Really well done...and I'll just keep trying..
Hello,
I just bought a PHASE90 M101.
Big disappointment:
It distorts the mid-bass.
The. notes clash especially on medium and high speeds.
Maybe the new PHASE 90 M101s no longer sound as good on the clean as they do for GILMOUR pieces like the ones you play in the video.
I didn't think there was such a big difference.
What do you suggest me?
PHASE 90 SCRIPT (that's enough)
PHASE 90 74 CUSTOM SHOP
OTHER
Surely in addition to your advice I will try them in the shop if possible.
Things we want more of? Anything! Just more please. Love the channel and your page!
Thanks!
Okay I’m gonna buy one now..because of Gilmore and Eddie...are you danish bjorn?....anyway great video 👍
Have a cigar intro
A Boss ME-25 can do this
okay so did he use a phase 90 or a univibe?
He swapped between the two. UniVibe from 1972-75 and 1994 to present. The Phase 90 1974-75.
Great video! I would love to see your comparison between phase 90 and phase 45, when you have the chance to do. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip!
I use the Maxon Phase Tone PT-999
Great choice!
Great video, Thanks!
