- David Gilmour's echo tones
In this video we'll look at David Gilmour's echo and delay tones and setups. It's the magic behind his playing and the Pink Floyd sound. In the late 60s and 70s David Gilmour would use echo machines, while favouring digital rack units in the 80s and 90s and delay pedals in the present era. We'll go through essential settings and how you can set up your delay unit for classic David Gilmour tones.
In this video
Guitar - Fender Stratocaster, with D Allen Voodoo 69 neck and middle pickups and Seymour Duncan SSL5 bridge pickup
Amp - Reeves Custom 50, Laney LT212 cabinet with Celestion V30 speakers

The fact that this guy has a dedicated website to getting gilmour’s tone is crazy. This man is a hero.
Ha ha! Thank you!
Yep. Been using his site since 2008, i think. Incredible resource.
agreed between him and Musty all my bases are covered. I wish i could find the equivalent obsessed person for Steve Hackett lol
Run like hell was just perfect
Thanks!
Run like hell was soo damn perfect man!!!
Thank you!
@@gilmourishofficial are you using a dotted 8th delay for Run Like Hell and ABITW?
!!!!!!!
@@gilmourishofficial what are the exact settings on flashback? If you could tell me the settings in "hours" because i dont understand 310ms(im stupid?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Bjorn. I hadn’t figured out Run Like Hell in the 23 years I’ve been playing. I dialed in the delay this past weekend like you suggested and WOOOO! Thank you sir 😊
The delay for Run is no longer my holy grail, thank you.
Glad I could help :)
Sorry for the late comment.
You could get it with an EHX Grand Canyon.
Wow so cool to hear Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun in this demo. Beautiful.
Best run like hell demo! All the awesome bits from his live version! Perfect!
Your sound and delay on “Set the Controls....” absolutely jaw dropping. His sound on Pompeii is so damn amazing. Binson makes it sound so loose and it’s like he can’t play a bad note with it. I really hope T-Rex gets it right and we get something cool and reliable.
Thanks! The Binson had a unique tone and the Boonar does a great job replicating it. The Binson had a fixed time - 310ms on the single head - and it really makes everything sound huge and almost a mix between echo and reverb.
gilmourish riis yeah the more I hear of the Boonar the more I love it.
Thank you so much for this!
I am a delay novice. Hearing the repeats separated from the track helps approximate the delay enough to get me by!
Right on as always.
Again your efforts are much appreciated!
Amazing how you just cant do any wrong. Id like to see you do a video of a pedal or amp youre not familiar with, and you just spend time dialing it in, uncut. I feel like i could learn alot just watching ans listening to your process. Cheers from Chicago!!
Thanks for the kind words and the tip!
Coming back to life is one of my very favourites. Fun to play, too.
Thanks Bjorn! You are instrumental in making me play, and sound like David Gilmour. I, for years have used your backing tracks, jammin tracks, tone and equipment tutorials. The green Russian muff, and this delay demo have refined my abilities to a level I never thought I'd be able to achieve. Again thank you, keep up the stellar work, and peace!... fom California
Thanks for your kind words! Glad you enjoy my site and vids!
Excellent stuff as always Bjorn
Excellent Bjorn, as always a valuable contribution to continue understanding all about Gilmour's tone, thanks

Grande dimostrazione!
Wooooooooooow ! Congratulations
Adore the DG to tones....saw them live 75 Knebworth. You have certainly nailed these tones well.
Thank you!
Parabéns! Belos vídeos. Excelente, ótimo estudo. Sucesso!
Great Job. Bjorn, you really Captured the Essence of D.G. - I can get All of these Delay Sounds from the Boss - DD-500 = fantastic & versatile unit.
Thanks! Yes, that's a very versatile unit.
TY Bjorn - keep up the great work ;)
Thanks!
You rock. Your playing is great
Thank you!
The Boss giga delay is great for these delays, and pretty inexpensive used. Thanks to Bjorn we now have the right milliseconds to program. Thanks Bjorn.
Always interesting as usual ;-)
Thanks!
Awesome!. Thank You.
Exactly what I was looking for. Especially useful when there is no digital "ms" display.
Bellissimi tutti i tuoi video grazie mille amico !!!!!!!!!!

GORGEOUS TELE
Some of your other demos are 1/8 - 1/16 too quick - but this one you smashed it !! !!
I love the new format of your videos with the instructional speaking at the beginning followed by you playing. But you can’t leave out the amazing intro music of your past videos. Love the beard.
Cheers!
There are thousands of great guitar players. David Gilmour is my fav so far.
You made me buy one with this video hahaha! I bought the v2 version modified by @jrmod and it sounds really amazing!
Thank you so much for this. I subbed and liked your video. You helped me a lot ;)

Like the binding on that neck.....unique for fender!

gilmourish riis Your videos are enlightening!
380 reminds me of John Martyn who played acoustic with FX in the 70s.
Great shit

Wow...very informative..great video performance and presentation..and my delay is being delivered today...a behringer vd400..

Set the controls for the heart of the sun
Thank you for always wonderful performance!
I am most interested in how to use "delay" of "DAVID GILMOR"
All songs were perfectly reproduced :)
I am not good at guitar :( But someday I'd like to be able to play songs of "DAVID GILMOR" :)
Thank you so much♪
miu from KYOTO JAPAN
Thanks!
@@denizoktay850 something like paint my canvas with David gilmour? Either way, Sounds good to me!
floyd canvas miu I just got interested in guitars and gears over a year ago. David's licks are veeeeerrry eeeaasy but it's impossible to have the same feels as him when he plays those notes.
best dude
man I wish that Strat sounded halfway decent !!!! Dang !!!! Chills !
I always thought David used a Boss DD-2 at times in the 80’s...it certainly nails a lot of his delay tones, digital but still retains some warmth unlike the later DD-3’s etc.
Yes he did. Especially during the About Face era. But his main delays in the 80s was the MXR and TC.
Love the DD2 and 3J. They are really lovely.
This is a great video - I've never seen this much detail on this aspect of Gilmour's sound! I happened across your video, since I recently posted on my channel two Floyd covers (Brain Damage/Eclipse and Comfortably Numb), on both of which I used a Maestro Echoplex tape delay, and threw in some slide guitar to emulate that early Floyd style echo, including the violin effect. Have you ever known Gilmour to use a tape delay? Thanks for posting!
Thanks! He did use the old Binson for years and although the sound is similar to tape, it's designed based on a steel drum. I've never seen him use tape machines although I'm sure they had some Copycats and Space Echos lying around.
I was the 14,000 subscriber!!!!
Awesome!
Super!
I almost almost can't believe that Disconnected is back in '16!
It's been some years!
Can you do a video of how to make a good sound for the Pompeii echoes version ? That would be awesome
Skelter Gaming The first example in this video should get you close, maybe with a bit less repeats. I believe they used echorecs on the Pompeii show
@@marijnstam7374 yes they did. I bought a Catalinbread Echorec pedal that gets really authentic Binson Echorec sounds.
muito bom. parabens
bravo bravo!
Good Bjorn !
He used the MXR delay on the In the Flesh tour in 1977. There are photos of that unit in his setup online and you even say so on your own website!
Yes, you're absolutely right but he also used the Binson during the Animals tour and possibly the recording of the album. The MXR wasn't typical of Animals but rather from Wall and later.
Hello sounds great I have some mxr 1000 ms delays now id almost have to match them by ear and kick the repeats up but they are digital units. The 1500 delay has a different modulation sound too it. Makes me want to tape round the time and mark it with correct times and know exactly where each delay setting is.. I know it will do all those mentioned but wont sound like echo rec exactly also other knobs will need to be marked as well.. notated.
Old gear still has its merits.. Makes me want to dial these inside axe fx 2 now though see if
you can dial them in should be able too.. Some efx just have a specific sound nothing else does.. The modulation sound on those mxrs are interesting. nothing else really sounded like that though dated now that is THAT sound for then.. Almost needs a paint pen in fine line
to be able to pen the time rates in round the dial... as they are not listed on mxr you gotta figure them out against one with digital read out to know what the actual time is then mark it.
vs just punch in 310 or 380 or 440 700 ect and 7 repeats ... But I do know the modulation sound on the 1500 is richer then the 1000ms its just different perhaps an upgrade there as well the time of 500 more seconds of delay was the big deal then. I spied Ej using both of those. stocked up on the 1000ms units.. those had hold feature soulful terrain is the hold feature and if you had two of them you set one to that hold feature time and its mix was hotter then the other mxr unit which was another delay time but when you turned the hold feature off entirely all you hear would be the other delay as its out of chain.. just an intro or segway or ending feature.. those had bypass and then hold....
That telecaster... Was so daamn perfect
Hi Bjorn, ur a legend mate. Ended up on your site looking at pedals after watching this, have you or can you do a vid of the David Gilmour in a Box pedalboard thats follows the reccomended uses in your article. Cheers Dan
Thanks for the kind words and tip!
Great video! Really love thr website, it has helped me so much. I was wondering what you think of the ehx MIG-50. I was thinking of getting one and pairing it with a cab with fane clones in it
Never tried the MIG so I can't really tell.
I had a sovtek mig 50 ( it got stolen).
Fantastic amp , though I have never heard the ehx ....
Paul Bangash thats a damn shame to hear, thanks for the advice though.
Excellent as usual! For Another Brick Part 1 are you using any compression, chorus or flanger? Thanks, keep these coming please!
The effects are listen on each clip. For Another Brick it's just the delay.
