  • Sometime I focus too much on the pew pew aspect of Elite Dangerous as well as the money aspects. But ED is quite a deep and profound game with many other important aspects that shape the pew pew and money aspects. In this video I am educating myself by checking out the basic powerplay, the politics, aspect of ED. And it is very fascinating.

My favorite thing about Elite is the wrecks. The crash sites and abandoned bases, most of which have audio logs that tell a story. They are sadly ignored by many players but for me, they are the highlight of the game. To this day, I still find the logs you scan at Jameson's Crashed Cobra compelling. No idea who voices Commander Jameson but he gives a fantastic performance, if a fairly short one. You can feel the pain in his voice in the last one, and the shock in the third one.
There's also a surprising amount of depth at the tourist beacons. Not only are passenger missions good for money and reputation, but if you take the time to read the logs from the beacons, many are rather interesting.
But yes, the powerplay system is cool too. One of the many reasons why I wanted walkable ship interiors when Odyssey was announced is that I was hoping we could walk back to the cargo area and take one of Aisling's propaganda posters for ourselves, and hang it on a wall somewhere inside the ship. I've never been a fan of the Empire (I prefer the Alliance) but if I was, I'd be an Aisling fan, simply due to her stance against imperial slavery. Plus, yanno, blue haired waifu.
That said, I wish there was another Alliance powerplay faction besides Mahon, who seems just as corrupt as Hudson, if Galnet is to be believed. Hopefully FDev will expand the roster after the Federal Election this year, since Hudson is being forced to retire anyway.

Perhaps like many CMDRs, I casually join and leave powers (usually for the 4 weeks or slightly more required) to get particular weapons, shields or other unique modules that they give. However, I do stay loyal to the Federation or Empire (depending which of my accounts I am playing on) once I have ranked up in those. Playing in Open mode did lead to some... interesting interactions (often my death) in key Powerplay systems. The Discord for a Power was really useful to avoid doing actions which interfered with the player base's target systems, etc.

Zachary - the Terminator T1000. Pranava, the techno wizard cultist. Aisling, the anime princess. 😀
I usually pledge to a Li when exploring. Free cash + higher payout.
The higher the ranking, the more players support a faction. Edmund is most player supported power. Zemina is the least supported one.
I wish PP gets an overhaul, and includes on-foot gameplay. With some overhaul and right incentives, PP could become really great.

In truth, I watched the video only today, and there is something to remember.
Yuri Grom, a power that was introduced into the game thanks to the players. I don't remember what year it was, but once the Frontiers organized an event for large communities playing the power play. Many "clans" of players participated and the EG Pilots faction won. After that, this force was brought into game for their faction, with only a couple of systems under control. And their goal was to expand the power and reach the first place in the ranking of galactic powers, which they successfully did about a year ago)

How's it going Foxy! (And others)
Glad to see you exploring outside the comb@t system and dipping your toes into the murky waters of galactic politics. Just one of the MANY aspects of the game that prove lies to the adage that E:D is a mile wide but an inch deep.
As per our tradition, I will attempt to give you a few tips and tricks to help you on your way. As always, they're in order of your video:
    1) Yes, the game has DYNAMIC politics, all the way up the chain. What you do in a single system can affect galactic politics, and these Major Faction Heads do change positions on their leaderboard. Each of them, in turn, are allied with one of the 3 Superpowers (Alliance, Empire, or Federation) or are Independent. They are, however, still NPC's, not Commanders.
    2) By performing Preparation, Expansion and Control (PEC) duties (generally going to their home system and taking their "power commodity" somewhere else), you can help expand the control of one of the Major Factions and gain merit with that faction. Merit must be maintained by continued efforts. Each week's Merit level will contribute toward the following week's, but does not stay the same (it is a % of the previous week, applied toward the new week.) Each Merit level gained gives you access to more power commodity at a time.
    3) As with everything, there is a 1 week cycle which updates on Thursdays.
    4) After 4 weeks pledged to a Major Faction, you become eligible for a reward, if you have earned enough merit by performing the PEC duties. If you're JUST after the equipment, you can stay pledged for 3 weeks without any action, then work hard in week 4 and 5 to have the merit to buy what you want. (I highly suggest running through each Major Faction that once and buying multiples of everything they offer, then choosing one faction to stay with or abandoning them altogether.) Rank 3 Bonus Breakdown:
4a) Edmund Mahon ---------------------- "Retribution" Small Beam Laser with Added Heat Buildup for the enemy.
4b) A Lavigny Duval ---------------------- "Imperial Hammer" Multi-shot Rail Gvn.
4c) Aisling Duval --------------------------- "Prismatic Shields" Some of the strongest shields in the game.
4d) Yuri Grom -------------------------------- "Dumbfire Mi$$le" that temporarily knocks enemy FSD offline.
4e) Felicia Winters ------------------------- "Pulse Disrupter" Medium Pulse Laser that causes Module malfunctions.
4f) Zachary Hudson ----------------------- "Pacifier" Large Frag-C@nnon with reduced damage, but increased range and spread.
4g) Pranav Antal ---------------------------- "Enforcer C@nnon" Increased damage, but reduced rate of fire.
    4h) Li Yon-Rui -------------------------------- "Pack-Hound" Medium "drunk" seeker mi$$le rack.
4i) Denton Patreus ------------------------ "Advanced Plasma Accelerator" Specialized plasma we@pon.
4j) Archon Delanie ------------------------- "Cytoscrambler" Burst laser that does extra damage to shields, but no hull damage.
4k) Zemina Troval ------------------------- "Mining Lance" Mining Laser that can do comb@t damage.
    5) Rank 5 Bonus Breakdown (This applies ONLY in systems that THAT Major Faction is in control of, or is exploiting. This doesn't apply to all systems that are controlled or exploited.)
5a) 50% Increased Rare Goods Profits
5b) 100% Increase to Bounty Payouts
    5c) 100% Increased Influence Rewards
    5d) 100% Increased Influence Rewards

    5i) 90% Reduced Munitions Costs

On the pronunciation, keep an eye on the Galnet in-game news. You can hear them, and hear the news for the official pronunciation. But that doesn't matter anyways xD
The Advanced Plasma Accelerator is kinda like the Imperial Hammer Rail Gun, in that they deal "less" damage per shot, but have full auto fire rate. Rail Gun are charge based (hold trigger to charge, release to shoot) and the Plasma Accelerator is single shot (pull trigger to shoot, holding does nothing). The Advanced Plasma Accelerator and Imperial Hammer Rail Gun both are full auto (hold to keep firing). I'm biased against Rail Guns (too much heat, too much distributor draw), but the Advanced Plasma Accelerator is great. You can put a pair on a Vulture engineered for Efficient, and you can keep shooting nonstop (a pair or Rail Guns or normal Plasma Accelerators would overheat and drain the distributor). Try the Rail Gun and Plasma Accelerator, to see if their variants might be for you.
If you want, I can also give you a ride and show you both weapons.

For a beginner, the Cytoscramblers are in my opinion the best powerplay modules. They are game changers for beginner ships with small hardpoints. A single short range inertial impact engineered Cytoscrambler has more than 70 DPS, from a size 1 hardpoint! Agile ships with tight hardpoint convergence (they are small anyway so convergence is usually fine) turn into absolute shield shredders. Imagine how fast an eagle can strip a dangerous Corvette of it's shields. You can even overpower the SCBs with just 2 Cytoscramblers. Now picture my Chieftain "Determinist" with three of them, plus two size 3 Pacifiers or just Multicannons. If you put corrosive on the opponents hull, Cytoscramblers even do hull damage. An Imperial Eagle with 2 Cytos and a size 2 corrosive Fragment Canon dominates the HazRes. Every day not pledged to a power is a lost day in the beginning. I have a stack of all power play modules, and a couple T-10s I use as additional module storage. But the Cytoscramblers are my absolute favorite, they are sooooo OP 🫶

    • @BlueSideUp
      @BlueSideUp 11 месяцев назад

@FoxyloxyX I understand engineering is intimidating at first. But especially the "easy" engineers don't ask for much and offer significant help. They almost happen automatically.
What I actually do suggest to all beginners is a trip to the Guardian Site for Modules. Don't grind for all of them but you will massively enjoy the FSD Booster and Shield Reinforcement. And as you don’t have all engineers unlocked, the Guardian Powerplant and Distributor are nice as well. It's a one time unlock with great atmospheric game play, you can just buy them later on every station with a Guardian Technologie Broker, as many as you like and in all sizes. You only need a Diamondback Explorer with 5A FSD, otherwise D rated modules, an SRV (or two if you loose one 😉), a fuel scoop and a point defense on tip to make life easier. As it makes your life so much easier to have access to just those 4 modules in the beginning, it's worth doing it. It teaches you SRV driving as well and there is a little SRV fighting with Guardian drones.

Don't sleep on those Pacifier Frags just because they say reduced damage. Strap two of those things to a Vulture and you'll literally shred the competition. The longer range and tighter grouping ensures more fragments land on your opponent. I've always found the standard frags hard to use because of how close you have to be to land a meaningful amount of frags.
Although, it's common practice to get the Shields from Aisling first.
The only module you don't really need to worry about is the Mining Lance. I've found only very limited use for it.
Also... at first don't worry about the rank 5 benefits. You should focus on getting the modules first. Then once you have all the modules you want you can select the power you want to stick with. Although getting and maintaining rank 5 is more work than it's worth in a lot of cases.

I've never understood why people are so down in mining lances. Sure, they're not great in combat, but they're definitely better than mining lasers! I've had mining ships accosted by pirates and destroyed them with just mining lances.
But even setting that aside, they're better lining lasers than mining lasers, with greater range. I hate the Grey Lady, but her PP module is an improvement across the board.

Powerplay is only worth it for the weapons - prismatic shields and packhound missles are all I did PP for. Powerplay has not changed since it arrived in the game in 2015 and is an opportunity missed by Fdev as it could be so much better if they had shown it more attention. Back then, 50 milllion max reward was substantial but now you can easily make that with a few trade runs or have a more enjoyable time in a high on foot CZ for an hour or so. If you like to roleplay though, then you would probably get more satisfaction from it than I did.

17:39 it's not high. It's the lower number - the better, not inverted. The higher is influence of specific person the higher on the list they show up. The most influent currently is Mahon. But i bet it will change after the powerplay cycke, as the podium is always changing

Most players pledge to a power at some point but only to acquire the modules. They then switch allegiances to acquire more modules. It works but it is problematic.
As a result the powerplay is reduced to a stumble for modules. Any deeper strategies being contemplated by cmdrs seeking to get into powerplay properly are fatally undermined by this stampede for modules. The cmdrs end up not concerning themselves with politics, they end up grinding the shortest possible route to a given pixel reward.
This powerplay system is nearly good, but sadly fails in this regard.
I would prefer to see other benefits offered for CMDRs for longer term active loyalty to power. Each power has particular focuses that can confer advantage in one way or another to a cmdr. Perhaps one gives trade benefits, others might offer good prices for modules or ships, better exploration payouts etc, etc. Maybe a module could be a mission reward for players once they reach a certain threshold of service to a power - though I would prefer the modules to be removed from powerplay altogether - perhaps obtainable in some other way.

You should ALWAYS be pledged to someone. At the very least, it's a free 1000 credits each week.
I did a loooong tour, prostituting myself to each Power in turn, buying and storing a bunch of each PP module (starting with the Prismatic Princess), then moving on to the next. Philosophically, there are a few Powers I despise, and the rest I like to various degrees, but I made sure to end my tour with Edmund Mahon, as the Alliance is where my true loyalties lie, and have remained pledged to the Prime Minister ever since. I proudly fly the Alliance logo on my ships, and have an Alliance keychain in real life, too.

Ya Aisling is probably the best to start on as many if not most of your ships will use prismatic until you “get good” and start using biweave + hull tank Also #1 is highest rated… Zemlin a is last rated ;)

27:51 unless you are REALLY DEEP into powerplay, you won't even get to 5th rank. Its hard to claim and even harder to keep
So don't really look at the 5th rank bonuses

Power Play is actually for the most part stagnant. If a particular system is owned by faction A, that faction B attempts to attack through power play. Faction A only needs to defend against it up to X effort. Even if the attacking faction did 3 times the number in power play 'damage' against that faction. It is completely stale mated. Which really makes the actual depth of this system fairly low. Every week, you have to defend and assault by the means your chosen power play operates. That is all there is. The rewards change more than anything else. But for a game play system. It is just repetitive effort. There is nothing wrong if you enjoy it. That is the most important thing you should take away from my comment here.

i think its a case of pledge then wait 3 weeks doing your own thing then the 4th week you drop off 700ish properganda stuff to a designated system.

Yes, it can be used in bounty hunting missions, but in reallity i can't remember a single case when my mission target had escaped from me using fsd.
