Just rewatched Jason Goes to Hell last night. I first saw it on VHS when it came out when I was about 10 years old (yeah, probably too young, but I turned out normal). I watched it quite a lot in my teen years. I totally see the majority of people's issues with it. It is a stupid concept, it doesn't make sense and it totally shits on the established series before it, but I've always liked it. I never try to change peoples minds because it is all subjective. We like what we like and that's ok. I loved your assessment of the movie, all of its flaws. I've just always had a fun time with it and it always seemed really dark to me. It has some of the best gore of the franchise, just some nasty awesome kills. Steven is actually one of my favorite characters in the series. When we first meet him you kind of think he'd be this wimpy nerd type but then he turns out to be kind of a badass. Creighton Duke is a great character. I'd love to see a side movie of just Duke, exploring his backstory with Jason and Crystal Lake. This is the movie I really think they should have brought in Jason's dad, Elias Voorhees. I always looked at it kind of as a tie in film, its not officially titled a Friday the 13th film but rather Jason Goes to Hell. So I always look at it like a side story of the shared universe. Anyway I always enjoy your reviews and opinions. Keep it up dude!

Here's an idea I just had, might be a crappy one but here goes. When Jason took a new body over time it slowly started decaying and resembling Jason so he had to jump into a new body as a sort of disguise and then at the end he can't find a body to jump into so puts the mask on for the finale.

You had me wondering so I looked it up. Jason only had 3 minutes of screen time lol
Another thing I thought was cool is that Jason kills Jason ( kinda ) happens off screen but you see Kane Hodder dead. He was one of the guards at the morgue.

I just watched this film tonight for the first time in 25 years - yes since late '93/early '94 when it first hit cable and a friend of mine brought the recorded VHS copy over to my house to watch when we were both freshmen in high school. I hated it back then. Much to my astonishment this evening...I loved it! I've got my complaints too but overall this was a blast from start to finish. Go figure.

It is just good fun. I actually love watching this and Freddy's Dead WAY more than Halloween Resurrection which says a lot since I am a bigger Halloween fan than the other 2.

For nostalgia, this film is great to get really stoned and just space out watching. It is obviously not the best but I really really dig parts of it. This was like a cross between Evil Dead and FTT. The necronomicon shows up at Jason's house!

The reason that this film is titled "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" instead of "Friday the 13th Part IX" or something similar is that New Line Cinema had bought the rights to the Jason Voorhees character from Paramount, but did not have the rights to the name "Friday the 13th".
When Creighton Duke is being interviewed and he demands $500,000 for the capture of Jason, he says, "For that, you get the mask, the machete, the whole damn thing." This is a reference to Jaws (1975) when Quint demands $10,000 to kill the shark. He says, "For that, you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing."
One early concept for this movie was "Jason Goes To L.A" in which two rival gangs would be fighting. When Jason would show up and start murdering them, the rival gangs to band together to defeat Jason.
Jason's heart was used in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) as Monkey Man's heart.
The crate in the basement of the Vorhees house was a prop from the story "The Crate" from Creepshow (1982).
The jungle gym in front of the Vorhees house was also used in The Birds (1963).
Barry Moss had served as casting director for the first Friday the 13th, but had nothing to do with the series after that. Sean Cunningham convinced him to come back for Jason Goes to Hell because Moss lived on the East Coast, and his cancer-stricken mother lived in Los Angeles. Working on Jason Goes to Hell gave him a professional reason to return to LA, providing a paycheck while spending his free time attending to the needs of his dying mother.
The original title of the movie was "Friday the 13th Part IX: The Dark Heart of Jason Voorhees".
According to co-writer Dean Lorey, the biggest mistake he made was a writing a baby into the story and Creighton Duke's sudden appearance in the lore despite never being mentioned in the last 8 films, and some of the rules to kill Jason.
In extended interviews of Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th (2013) documentary about Friday The 13th movies Noel Cunningham said that original rough cut of "Jason Goes To Hell" was over 130 minutes long and therefore it had to be heavily re-edited to be faster paced and under 90 minutes long.
This is the first Friday the 13th-related film to have another Voorhees (other than Jason) in the movie since Friday the 13th (1980).
Though the theatrical poster features Jason wearing a shiny chrome mask, no such face covering is ever seen in the film. In fact, the mask he wears is the traditional hockey mask Jason is known for, but with his flesh growing over it. The demonic parasite on the cover also looks nothing like the parasite in the actual film. Jason does wear a metal futuristic mask in Jason X (2001).
This was the first film in the series to be handled by New Line Cinema after the series was moved from Paramount.
Tony Todd auditioned for the role of Creighton Duke, but lost out to Steven Williams.
Like several of the sequels before it and in Jason X (2001) after this, the film originally had a flashback sequence and Betsy Palmer was proposed to reprise her role, but she decided not to for various reasons, usually money, in all the films.
According to actress Rusty Schwimmer, most of the dialog between her character, Joey B, and Shelby (Leslie Jordan) was improvised on set. "They just rolled the cameras and let us go," she said.
The only film in the series to be released in the 1990s.
The character in the film named Robert Campbell is an intentional tribute to Robert Englund, who played Freddy Krueger, and Bruce Campbell, who played Ash from The Evil Dead.
Director Adam Marcus's decision to cast an African American actor as Creighton Duke was influenced by 'George A. Romero''s continued casting of African Americans as heroes in his films, in spite of the turbulent political climate when these films were made. Marcus wanted to continue this trend, and ultimately chose Steven Williams for the role.
The sheriff's surname is Landis, which is a reference to John Landis, director of An American Werewolf in London (1981) and Michael Jackson: Thriller (1982)
Josh's death won the Golden Chainsaw Award in Dead Meat's "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (R Rated Cut)" kill count, while Deborah Caldwell's death won the award in the Unrated Cut.
FBI Agent Elizabeth Marcus is named after the director, Adam Marcus.
In addition to his roles as Jason and the Security Guard, Kane Hodder also played Freddy Krueger's arm in the final scene, which technically makes him the only actor to play both Jason and Freddy
Jason's heart was made of gelatin and filled with fruit cocktail, mixed with black dye. Still, actor Richard Gant was disgusted and reportedly nearly threw up during the take.
The second of two 'Friday the 13th' movies that feature Jason in which he doesn't use a machete to kill anyone, the other being Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984).
Jason possesses four people, all male (Phil the Coroner, Josh, Robert and Randy).

I have a soft spot for this one because even though it lacks Jason it has things I enjoy.I felt the cast here was one of the strongest an the gore in the unrated cut was awesome. The cut stuff was more plot development they cut more scenes of the bounty hunter Duke looking for Jasons sisters dead body at the morgue an getting arrested again because the cops thought he stole the body but it was the reporter. They also cut the scene at the end were the demon Jason thats supposed to be his true form grows into adult size an Duke pulls it into the basement. They cut a couple of development scenes for Jason sister romance with the cop. As well as a scene were the reporter goes through Jasons mom family tree. The film is actually a sequel to the first 8 thats why Jasons body is melted.Theres a deleted scene were the bounty hunter lists all the times Jason died an he list part 8 by toxic waste. This scene was reinserted in the tv version. You can watch it on youtube. What happened with this film an is mentioned some what on the commentary was Sean the director of the original never liked Jason the hockey mask version because he diddnt create it.He did the first film about Jasons mom an he was all ways resentful about Steve Minor creating the character that made the franchise a super star. So when he got around to making this he said you can have the job if you can figure out how to get the hocky mask out of the film. The original script was about Jasons brother Elias an the film was gonna pick up after 7 an he was gonna bring Jasons body an eat his heart taking the power. This idea was dropped when new line refused to release a film not featuring Jason. So the script was re written to feature Jason an the name Elias was given to the father. The back ground of the bounty hunter an how he knew Jason was deleted.Originally in the climax he was gonna tell the story of being on the lake before the second movie happened an his girlfriend was killed by Jason an he escaped. The dagger that kills Jason is the same one from the evil dead movies which is funny because the book is there to.According to the director were supposed to believe Jason is a deadite type demon powered by the evil dead book. Not sure if that works but they spun the idea into the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash comic

I like the intro and can get behind Jason's look, we had the box set with this when I was growing up and I couldn't get behind seeing "Jason" shave the body he's about to take, I would have prefered a movie of just part 9 Jason the whole time killing people in the camp over what we got :p

I loathed this film the first time I saw it and my feelings haven’t changed after all of these years. It was one thing to take the story in that unusual direction. But everything else was new when it seemed kind of late in the series to be introducing it. Starting with seeing the Voorhies house. I assumed the house looked that bad because Pamela had been too busy killing people to look after it. And why couldn’t Jason stay there instead of living in shacks in the woods? Introducing more family members that Jason clearly did not care for like he did his mother, seemed like a Halloween rip off. The one thing that was okay was the beginning. When the Feds came in and killed him, I did think that FINALLY, someone was doing something about him. And then that development fell apart as quickly as it had begun.

The Friday The 13th series is my favorite film franchise so this film is disappointing as a Jason film, but for some reason I go back to it a lot because it's so fascinating to me. It really is a interesting film, but like you said as a Jason movie it's not good, but if it was its own thing it would be cool. Also I couldn't find the comic connecting part 8 and this film I know topps published a Jason goes to hell comic and someone said that connects them but when I read it I just remember being the movie on a comic book, but if you wanna read a cool Jason comic book topps made a comic called Jason vs Leatherface and it is glorious to any horror fan.

in the slasher documentary 'going to pieces' they talk to Betsy Palmer and she has her own explanation about jason's father. you see her making a kill in the first film wearing a mans high school class ring and she said that in high school a guy would give a girl his ring or letters jacket if they were dating and she approached the role that pamela was a teenage mother, the guy freaked and said 'dont put this on me, get rid of it' when she told him she was up the stick and rejected her, then her parents threw her out for being 'a tramp' and she wound up at the Salvation Army getting help and ended up getting her first job at the camp and never seeing the father again.
she could have written Pamela's autobiography from the sounds of it.

I blame New Line, they had no respect for the Friday the 13th franchise. Hell! The 2 they did isn't even called Friday the 13th. Again, New Line simply showed no respect to the franchise what so ever.

Your absolutely right. This film was a huge fuck you to the fans and its all due to Sean Cunningham. He has no respect for the fans or the Jason character. The only reason Cunningham is holding onto this franchise for dear life is because he's not talented enough to make money doing anything else.

Ugh there isn't much to say about this one either... Some of the kills great! the heart and all that other bullcrap awful. I loved Vicki as well and I always point out the random dude getting shotgunned to people as well haha. I don't get it how some kills look awesome in this and others were just... Like the chick getting her whole bottom jaw punched back into her face always looked so bad to me. And that shaving scene hahahahaha.... I loved the asshole boyfriend as well he had some of the best lines. One thing that always bothered me about this one though. Is he eventually posses the main guy from the TV shows best friend the cop. And he talks normal like hes not Jason.. When though the whole rest of the movie he says nothing when it could have got him what he wanted far sooner if he just talked normal... And poor Duke talked so much crap and then got bearhugged to death.
