Korok forest is Link's true home. It has the only two good things about Hateno, a free bed and a rainproof cooking fire in close proximity to a shrine, all for free and with better neighbors. And the bed, despite being treated similarly to an inn, was set up specifically for Link's use.

If you look closely, you can see that the inside of Link's house doesn't match the outside structure. The chimney is the obvious example, but in the place where the bow weapon rack is, you can look outside and see that there's a bulge in the structure that indicates an alcove should be there. The exterior model for Link's house is shared with other houses in Hateno, and if you look into those houses, you find that the inside DOES match- there's an alcove where the wall stick out, etc.
This is the biggest thing that bugged me about Link's house. I assume they changed the interior to streamline it for the weapon racks, and didn't bother to make a unique exterior to match the actual interior.

OH MY GOSH, YES! I loved the fact that Link's house was brought into the game because it felt like a little hub area that the player could just chill out in and do semi-simulator things to give Link a break. But most of it is completely useless! And how could Link's own bed, safely nestled in a quiet community (that's potentially his home village) NOT give him bonus hearts and heal him the same amount as the random beds he can find in dangerous lands? Also, ridiculous that there aren't enough weapon, bow and shield mounts in the house for you to display all the possible "special" weapons in the game (Champions' gear, amiibo weapons).

    • @kit76149
      @kit76149 2 года назад +106

All this stuff amounts to it being a video game at the end of the day. That's the reason. No fireplace because a weapon rack is there. No extra hearts is because they thought it would be too op/unbalanced probably to have somewhere you can permanently get extra hearts for free after buying it. Though for the price you pay for the house I don't think it is, but I'm not the devs.

This house bugged me so much! Especially as it's implied that it was actually Link's own house before he never came back 100 years ago. They had so much room to add easter eggs, personal touches or just tiny details that make the home feel less generic. A really easy change would have been to change the yellow flower in the vase to a Silent Princess. Every Zelda game in the past had these tiny attention to detail, like the child's drawing on the tree in OOT or each student's room in Skyloft. It's baffling why they even left the table set for 2 people, as if Link in the story arc is the type to have friends or ladies for sleepovers.

My perspective as a dev is that they probably planned on implementing all the things that you showed off in this video at some point during development, but then they decided to focus on finishing other features and removed whatever wasn’t finished (leaving behind the traces seen in the video) because they were running out of time and/or as the vision for the game shifted over time, these elements seemed less necessary or compatible with the rest of the game.
Like maybe early on, the stables didn’t exist, so you could only manage your horses at home, but then they found that it was frustrating having to trek them all the way across the map and added the stables, which then made the stable at home no longer useful. Maybe farming was planned but when they thought about which features to cut to eliminate scope creep, it was an easy choice to remove since it was mostly disconnected from the rest of the game mechanics.
Personally what bugs me the most out of these is not being able to go in your own shed and the townsfolks not knowing who you are when you’ve owned a house in town and they’ve seen you going up and down the street for the last 200 hours of gameplay.

Yeah I was also very underwhelmed by link's own home. Apart from the theory that it was Link's own house before the calamity and he's only buying it back, AND the fact that Bolson sits in your lawn for eternity, it's also frustrating how little you can do in the house compared to how much you invest in it. I've only used the bed in the house once or twice throughout my playthrough because everywhere else look much more welcoming. The interactivity prevalent in BotW just isn't seen here.
You can't even keep your favorite gears and rare shields in display because you can only display 3 of each type, if you want to collect missable stuff you can only leave it to rot in your inventory space, eating up a precious space for potent weapons as they deplete very fast.
Also, why can't the house be a little bit... cleaner? It always look dusty inside, contrasting to the vibrant, pristine looks of Bolson's other architecture works. It makes me think they didn't even dust off the interior when handing over the house.
Also also... why can't I have a house in Tarry Town? You know, the town that *I* gathered wood to build, that *I* found workers and residents for? And the residents don't even seem greatful, with Hagie and his daughter actively despising you? (Hobbies of the Rich side quest) AND after you help Hudson build the town, fulfil his worth, find his love, host his wedding, what does he tell you? *"Don't you have somewhere important else to be?"*

FINALLY someone who craved more out of this house! My sister always looked at me like I was picky or something when I complained about the house. In her playthrough she never went there so she saw no need for it. I however am regularly going back to it and am disappointed EVERY TIME.
One thing that pissed me off beyond belief was Bolson "and Sons" acting like they owned the place. Don't get me wrong, I actually really enjoy their dialogue and I don't even mind that they originally commandeered it. It made me angry, but it makes sense lore-wise. House has been empty for 100 years, it's just business. I don't even mind paying for upgrades cus Link is probably the kinda guy that wants to see everyone be properly compensated for their work and doesn't like hand-outs. So all's good. EXCEPT, the fact they just act like they've "given" the house to us. Why is there never a way to prove to them we owned it? Like maybe they heard the legend of "the kid who held the sword" owning the house but believed it to be too long ago or whatever, but then we show up with the Master Sword and they're like "HO SHIT!". There are already 3 rando NPCS that I can remember that react to Link having the Master Sword, so obviously that's not a big deal for them. At that point I feel like it would be cool if it unlocked bonus upgrades or something. Almost like a way to bring the cozy house into the end-game content. More storage, more functionality, etc. AND MAYBE THEY'LL MOVE THEIR GOD DAMN HIDEOUS EYE-SORE SHOW-HOUSES!! Ya'd think if they found out this ancient ass dude, Savior of Hyrule and Killer of Bokoblins showed up they'd probably be MORE THAN HAPPY to at least make us a nice CLEAR path to get our horse up there but nooooo. We gotta squeeze our horse through the tiny cube door, up the stairs, and out over the balcony just to reach the bridge(exaggeration). AND GO HOME! They literally already path to go and sleep in the ugly cube houses so why the hell can't they just go camp out at a firepit there?? WHY MY LAND. GTFO I PAID FOR THIS.
Aside from my loss of composure and literal temper tantrum, I completely agree with everything you've said. You even alerted me to NEW things to be angry about HAHA. One thing that always bothered me that I was so glad you mentioned was the useless, unfunctional stable. Why even bother Nintendo, why even bother. Should've just left that empty ass field if they were gunna give me that fake ass stable to stuff my horse in. Don't even get me started on the fact that if you angle your horse in a certain way or shove 'em in too far, you literally can't get off of it. Like it's LITERALLY not even big enough for you to comfortably and consistency park yer horse there. Not to mention it's in an extremely inconvenient spot. I already mentioned the cube houses blocking the way, but wouldn't have made more sense if it was closer to the road? For ease of access? Or if they kept it next to the house(cus it's cute) but at LEAST have it directly across from the bridge or CLOSE cus the current stable is legit stuffed in the back as far as possible. Might as well be up on the hill behind the house. And the storage. My god the STORAGE, if you can even call it "storage". It never made sense to me why they put like 69 special weapons in the game and were like "pick 3"... Hun... And there's not even a separate space for claymores. We get three spots for bows and polearms, but swords and claymores _share_ three. Aka, they basically only get 1-2 each? How does that make any sense?
The final thing I'll complain about, cus this is long and there is TOO much to complain about, is that, on one hand, I can entirely understand why the house might still feel empty lore-wise. I always believed it was because Link just didn't feel at home there anymore. It had been years, and Bolson touched basically everything, and all his memories, friends, history is basically dead. The house probably looks exactly to him as it does to us, and empty shell. I also have secretly head-canon that the man's too busy thinking about Zelda to not notice her lack of presence everywhere in the house LMAO. Someone in the comments also brought up the idea that he's just, too busy to see the house as a home. I love all of those theories. My gripe with that, is I think it should be the player's choice how the house is treated. Like depending on how many bonuses you buy for the house/how much time you spend there/etc. would dictate how the game(and by extension NPCs) sees the house. For players who never go, the house can be the empty shell Link can never feel at home in, and the villagers treat him as a wanderer, but for others, the house can be yer hub. It can be the base of your operations, a place to unwind, a place for Link to decompress and actually practice self-care LOL, it can be a home. At least to me, everytime I come to this house, which is often, it just makes me sad. Sad for the potential, sad for the ugly stupid trees, and sad for Link. It makes me think that despite everything that's happened to him and all the places he's been, there is no where for him to go and feel peace. He doesn't have a home. His mission is more important than even himself, and that just makes me so miserable. I wish there was a place for him in this game. A place for LINK, not just the "Hero" or "Knight of Hyrule" but Link himself.
This got real sappy but I just make myself feel better by spending time/feeding the horses, getting their hair re-styled and talking to the NPC's like old friends. Making Link an actually decent meal for once, as opposed to the infinite amount of apples I force down his throat mid-battle LMAO. Take time to do fun things like minigames or shield surfing. Stupid little things that make me feel better about the fact that he is essentially alone. So many friends, yet he is alone. Alone in his struggles, alone in his experience, and alone in his mission. The only surviving people from his past are either too old for sense or held up by some other supernatural occurence (**cough** Zelda **cough cough**). Anyways, incredible video BAHAHA! Inspired critical thinking, obviously, and said everything I would've wanted to say. Makes me feel seen to see that other people wanted more from this too. One thing I did notice though, is at least for me the text went by too fast. Idk if I'm just stupid but I found myself having to pause often throughout the video to read it. It wasn't that big of a deal but I'd thought I'd let you know anyways!

A shelf for displaying your accomplishments as statues or something (total Koroks, taming the harder/unique horses, getting all armor sets, etc) or a new space added based on the kingdoms you visit (reading nook with plants based on Deku Tree comes to mind and a rock collection shelf for Gorons. Maybe a dressing corner for Gerudo and the Fairies). And getting bonuses based on if you cook or sleep there would have been great. Heck, the NPC houses look more inviting. Some decor to reflect Link's personality would have been awesome since he doesn't have much when it comes to animation in this entry. Yeah, it's a pity. That house had all the potential to be a base for Link, to make it feel like he can belong somewhere. He literally buys the house in Hateno and upgrades and redecorates there. But after you're finished with that, there's just... basically no reason to ever return there. I don't even really store my weapons there, because there's not much of a point. What this could have been, was somewhere to store stuff, keep your horses, sleep, cook, stock up on resources and grow stuff you might need, maybe even make it personalized in some small ways like the pictures, but it's just a shell that doesn't feel like a house, really. What it does is just makes me sad, because visiting it while playing makes me feel like this is somewhere Link isn't supposed to be, either, and that he's just a stranger everywhere. Korok forest feels like a more welcoming place than the literal house you buy for yourself.

I have some thoughts about this. I haven't finished the video yet since I'm at work, so maybe some of this was covered already, but I'd like to share. I really love the Hateno house actually. I am constantly going back there to rest and it makes me feel like Link has a reprieve from being the hero of Hyrule and gets to just *be.* He gets to come to a place he calls home and relax.
I have the champion's ballad dlc and I love seeing the picture of everyone on the wall. I know you can watch the memory whenever you want, but seeing the picture hung up on the wall just cements the memory to me. It makes it feel more real.
I've seen some stories where, after saving Zelda, they move into the Hateno house as a sort of base of operations. Just a place where they can plan next steps and go back to in times of need.
As I mentioned, I am always coming back to the house whenever possible. It makes me happy to think that Link has a safe place to go and be himself. It's a little silly, but I almost feel proud of him for taking that step.
Something about this game makes me want to physically travel everywhere. I'll often have a horse parked in the mini stable thing next to the house and I'll hop on when it's time to go and explore. Sure, I'll teleport around when it's needed, but I much prefer to ride my horse (or motorcycle, and even then, I'd prefer my horse) around Hyrule. It's not a super big and vast world in reality, but it *feels* like it and it's super fun and relaxing to ride around. Having that little place I can always start my journey from really makes me feel like it's more personal. It's... comforting, in a way, if that makes sense.

You missed only one thing. One of the villagers up past the inn has the identical house to Link in it's completed form. The only difference is the staircase is on the the other side. :)
Also yes, my biggest issue with this game is how obviously not done it is. A mission board with only one mission? The option to demolish those god awful houses Bolson is building? To help expand the town and grow it? Maybe combining it with some Shiekah? I have a feeling Nintendo just gave up on it for the second one and put it out to tide people over. 🤷

What an awful take that is. The "mission board" only exist for that mission, so what? You want to demolish Bolson's houses but that's just because you don't like them. There's no reason why that should be an option in the game. "Help expend the town" there's already an entire side quest where you build a town from scratch.
That video and your comment are just stating non-problems. The only thing that I agree was needed regarding Hateno is more dialogue from the NPCs after you buy the house.

0:23 The commonly accepted interpretation is that the options given when selecting things to add to the house are the things Link himself thought to add to the house. Once everything that Link thought was needed was in, he told Bolson it was done, at which point Bolson realized that Link didn't think to add actual furnishings to the house, at which point he gives them as free of charge as a sort of house warming gift.
0:52 Again, the good were almost definitely a gift, not previously in the house, removed, and then returned once the building was renovated. On that note, even if the house was Link's family home, the place was vacant for some time, 100 years at most. When Link first encounters it, the house was marked for demolition because it was vacant and dilapidated. None one owned it because Link's family had been long dead and Link himself was presumed dead.
1:43 Link's bed doesn't do anything special because the special bonuses are justified in universe as being premium services purchased at inns, like massages or extra comfy bedding. Besides which, the game encourages going out to explore, and there are much more efficient ways of getting bonus hearts by doing that than sleeping in a bed.
2:21 That is just stupid. You want to have your resources spread across multiple locations in a game where you are constantly on the move? A game, mind you, that has a very organized inventory system that can hold an absurd amount of anything that isn't used conventionally attack things. Why?
3:56 Because eating food is so seamless natively. Why complicate it with putting food on a plate.
4:12 You don't need storage in the house for armor. Unless you have the DLC and multiple Amiibos that give special armor, there is enough inventory space for one of every set of armor in the base game plus the DLC. And again, why ask for a way to divide you inventory among multiple locations in a game where you are constantly moving?
4:58 Because printing the images on the Sheikah Slate is lost Ancient Sheikah Technology. Photographs are not commonplace in BotW's Hyrule.
8:10 Of course the fish you drop in are dead. They've been out of the water for who knows how long.
In short, most of your complaints can be addressed with one, overarching idea: Breath of the Wild is a game in which you are expected to explore. Link in this game is characterized as someone who is constantly on the move because his is a man on a journey with no clear path. The house is meant to give Link someplace he can return to, not someplace to stay. Say you completed all the Divine Beasts, destroy Ganon, completed the map, and did all the Shrines. If the house was capable of serving as a farm that supply you with any non-weapon or armor resource, what reason would you have to go out and explore? Also, this version of Link is much more definitively characterized than other incarnations with a personality separate from that of the player's. You can't customize or decorate the house because that's how Link would decorate the house after Bolson gave him the furniture he neglected to get. The Hatano residents don't treat Link like a resident because he really isn't; he's constantly traveling, as the game expects the player to behave.
You can't do a lot with the house besides using it as a place to rest because that's all Link would do with it, use it as a place to rest. You are expected to pull up with your horse or warp in from the nearby Shrine, spend the night to catch your breath, and then immediately leave for wherever the wind takes you next. The house is not expected to really becomes Link's home until after his journey is over, which is never seen within the confines of gameplay.

What if it’s raining? What if I don’t want to constantly use Bolson’s?) Adding that, an armor display or three, and maybe a bed capable of granting temporary hearts for free would get a lot of bang in making the house work for relatively little buck in implementation. (I can freely believe the flowers and NPC were intended to do something and cut for time, and also believe that they would have taken a lot more effort to implement and test. Fair enough!)

When I first saw that you could purchase the house, I thought it was going to be something similar to the secret base in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, where you could pick and choose your own secret base in different areas, and with different layouts, and decorate it as you see fit. While it doesn't do anything in-game, I loved the idea of having my own place to go to and I always tried to find the most remote bases to hide in.
It would've been amazing if BOTW gave you the option to choose WHERE you wanted your home to be in, rather than default to Hateno, a place that didn't feel like Link had any connection to (other than Purah). The first time I played, I felt more at home at Kakariko; after that, my favorite place to be in is Akkala. Imagine if there were vacant lots in every major town in BOTW and you could choose which one to build a permanent residence in.

Maybe in Gerudo you could have your own sand seal that came when you whistled like a horse, in Kakariko you could grow crops, Hateno had your horses, one along the water that had your own dock and raft, etc. Along with the customizable interiors and ability to interact with things that Hearthfire offered in Skyrim.
Very interesting find about the stablehand and the crops both, I had never noticed either of those things. It would have been so cool to see a functioning stable and stablehand, maybe with all your horses that weren't currently checked out in stalls at your house instead of just ... nowhere like they are now. I wrote up a massive series of documents several years ago covering all the things that struck me as sub-optimal about Breath, and it's staggering to catch everything. And the Hateno House wasn't even one of those! I found it annoying that I couldn't store infinite weapons there, but that was about it.
At the same time though, every system in Breath works just about well enough, and the overall package is excellent. Nintendo took a brave new step for themselves in making and releasing this goliath game, and it's important to temper critiques with the understanding that it's not possible to perfect any one of these things without damaging the rest.

I assume the little side house sheds are bathrooms

I had no idea Hateno had some kind of hunting minigame. It baffles me how I’ve played this game for almost six years and there’s STILL stuff I’ve never done

i would have easily sunk a few more hundred hours if they had actually fleshed out this area!! i ESPECIALLY wished for at least some more storage options :( hehe... i really hope for a better home in the next game :))

Its funny that we did actually get a gallery to hang our pictures on and the kitchen comes with a stove in the house. Its like they watched this video

What irks me about the house is that _Zelda fucking stole it._ Give me my house back! You're literally royalty! Get your own! You had a school built in Hateno! Just do that but with your own house!

that also really irked me at first, but honestly, the Tarrey Town house does just fine

@@farhaanj4330 Except for the limit on pieces of the house. Like... Half of my yard is just not used because I'm limited on how many pieces I can use to build my house. I saved Hyrule! _Twice!_ Why am I not allowed to use more pieces for my house?

@@VoidZeroNothing That's actually so true, you only have enough space to use every available room once, that annoys me so much. Even if they had, like, a limit of 20 pieces, that would've gone such a long way

Imagine being able to make Pay go to your house, visiting yourself
Not only pay, but other important/special npc

On top of a more fleshed out house system, I always wished there were more house options. I loved the Gerudo region and would have loved to have bought a house there instead

You are missing the big advantage the house has: the music

Why wouldn't there be stables on the edge of town where they would actually be used by the people of Hyrule. Only out in the middle of the dangerous countryside?

the idea of getting to put our own pictures into the frames would be really cool!
