Netflix just unveiled a first look for its Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action TV show.
Appearing at Netflix’s Tudum, a short title reveal takes us through Avatar’s elements with a suitably mystical soundtrack over the top.
Most importantly, Netflix also revealed when we can expect to see it hit the service: 2024.
Set in an Asiatic, war-torn world where certain people can "bend" one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire, or air. Aang (Gordon Cormier) is the "Avatar", the only one capable of bending all the elements, and is destined to bring peace to the world from the Fire Nation.
With his new companions Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), Aang sets out to master the elements while being pursued by the exiled Fire Nation prince Zuko (Daniel Dae Kim), who seeks to regain his honor by capturing the Avatar.
Along with the title reveal were images of Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko. The upcoming Avatar adaptation has been in the works since 2018 with a plan to bring the popular anime franchise into live-action.
As well as the upcoming live-action adaptation, Avatar will be getting a full animated feature film in 2025. In fact, it’s the first of three planned animated Avatar films from Paramount and Nickelodeon.
Avatar: The Last Airbender will be on Netflix in 2024. - Развлечения
Dude, I truly hope the Cabbage Merchant actor understands how much pressure he's under. If he screws up "my cabbages!" There will be hell to pay😂
😂😂😂
It's the same actor as the show so he'll be fine
Yeah dude playing him is the voice actor who played him
This actor litterly voiced the Cabbage Merchant in the animated series so I know he'll do a great a job.
Please don't ruin Toph. Please don't ruin Toph. Please don't ruin Toph.
I’m still too traumatized by the movie to fully support this series
I get you
Let's wait and see a small clip and judge it from there....
It looks promising 🙂

Toph will not be there, it's only season 1 for the beginning
You mean Melon Lord?
They casted white ppl as Sokka and Katara.. You dont think theyee going to ruin Toph too?

My biggest issue with characterization on Netflix production is that the costumes look always brand new, as if all the characters just bought or made them, they never get dirty or looked used
YESSS I SO AGREE!
I think that’s just promotional photos, those usually look like that. At least I hope that’s what it is.
They always look new in the animated series.
@@travisvanalst4698 hence why it should remain as an animated series, you can have that freedom there
The clothes look like cosplay costumes 😂
Netflix if you screw this up, then forget about making season 2
Unless you binge watch it in the first hour we won't get a second season either
The original creators already quit on Netflix because of how Netflix want things to go. So, don't expect too much
They will screw it up just like they did with deathnote
@@jjeverson2269it can’t be that bad come on AND YOU KNOW death note was bad
What I know there will soon season 2 in production because young actors so ....
Sokka better be funny in this cause he wasnt in the live action movie
All of em! The cartoon had fully fleshed out people, with senses of humor and flaws and jokes. These remakes often think they’ve got to make everyone serious in order to get the message across, but if there’s no joy in the movie, there’s no loss when bad things happen. I want to laugh, AND I want to cry.
I have a feeling he won’t be 🥲
@@jennifer7685 yea wish it would tho😔
@@luneluna307 According to Iroh's actor, Sokka's actor is "so funny" and "going to steal every scene he's in", so it seems they're keeping Sokka's humor!
@@RavenStarMediaI hope Iroh still stays iconic with his jokes
Hopefully a series like this stays true to the original cartoon series 🙏
No. The original writers left the project bcuz they did some changes in the live action series.
I’m hoping for it to be respectful of the original for what makes sense for live action, but it would be really weird to see certain cartoony stuff in live action.
@@mycom310 breaks my heart
This is Netflix we are talking about, I'll be surprised if they actually don't changed it
The makers did say it would still be very accurate. They probably disgreed with some minor changes (I hope)
The fact that Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino both were working on production for two years and then LEFT production after creative differences makes me super skeptical about the quality of the story and how much they will change the lore. Same thing happened with the witcher- season 2 was such a letdown that changed the personality and motivations of several of the characters. Hoping this is good and true to the story but I doubt it.
We can’t forget that they left moments after getting the opportunity to do movies with avatar studios. Most likely the contract didn’t alllow them to continue working with Netflix
The project they left no longer exists. Literally everyone in charge of it was fired and others took over, from what I hear. So it's hard to say
I doubt it. I can’t think of a single series of live nflx adaption that were good. Other than maybe the first season of witcher
@@jaykay5823 You could say the same about Prime Exclusives, but then they also have The Boys, which actually improved on the source material.
Not to mention the witcher (like many other adaptions) changing stuff like characters ethnicities in order to gain more brownie points. It's almost always annoying imo.
I love the avatar more then I fear Netflix.
YOU'RE SO REAL FOR THAT
lol
Only real fans will understand ❤
Aah i see what you did there!
Netflix: You miscalculated you. You should have feared me more😂
I hope that the bending will not be slow af like in the movie and that especially in water bending , the the water they bend will not be losing it’s shape and pouring water all over.
There’s no way they would make that mistake again
Tbh the snapshot of bending at the end of this video doesn't bring me hope
Yo tell me about. Water bending was tolerable. Not the greatest but tolerable. The earth bending though was a disaster in the movie. Holy moly so many complicated movements just to move a freakin pebble.
@@jasonfranco6549 lmao yea that was hilarious
I'm going to go into this with an open heart, as my inner child from more than a decade ago, no expectations, just excitement and awe.

I'm sad after hearing the news that the original creators left this project. :( I'm so excited to finally see something new for Avatar but if it changes from original story it will really hurt me😢
well i mean we already got an “original” which is the avatar animated series im already happy with that

The fact that they let the original creators leave this project made me 75% skeptical that the overal mood/theme of the show will be like the original. I'm guessing that this live-action will have a more serious tone, unlike the original which have this light feeling.
Aang looks pretty great
Yeah totally with his painted on arrow and bushy ass eyebrows
Much better than old film Last Airbender 😅

@@minako.iwasaki actually I like the actor who played Aang in The Last Airbender 2010 more. I gonna take my words back if that one plays much better.
They better say Aang and not Uong, because IMO that was annoying.
Zuko’s scar actually looks pretty solid. Not as big as the cartoon one but at least it’s visible since a lot of adaptations with characters with facial scars/birthmarks have them be barely visible
@@Qldr by “horrendous” do you mean ugly? It’s a fucking scar it’s not supposed to be pretty and again at least it’s visible unlike in the movie
@@melonlord4889i think they mean just madly done. Like its so much smaller than in the original. Because it’s supposed to be, ya know, hand sized. Obviously its not bad, i think it looks better than most, just like you said.
Dude it looks bad, the makeup is worse than cosplay. The inner part where the eye is should be discoloured, and the rest of the scar should cover the whole of his cheekbone, go up thru the hairline and around to the side of his head. It’s a 3rd degree burn; so technically in the cartoon show they depict it as just a bad burn and the eye is normal, but in reality he would likely have poor eyesight unless he had closed his eye during that part of the Agni Kai, so it would’ve been a more interesting take for them to have discoloured the eye to match the live-action realism.
Its Not looking like a burning scar. Google sandor clegane. Its a character from game of thrones. Thats how a burned face look like
I think this actually has a chance to be good. Will it live up to the original? Obviously not. But it may just be good in its own way

Whaaaat?! Ok Netflix. I see you! Let's hope they don't screw this up.
Aaaand you just ruined it for everyone. Thanks a lot 😒

I hoped cautiously it won't be as bad as the movie but with how it looks I now expect it to be as bad (visually at least)
It's Netflix, let's be honest, this is going to be trash.
Aang is going to be Gay. Princess Yue is black. And women have bad attitude. Men will be bumbling dumbasses.... welcome to Netflix

And not all need to be, actually just let them stay animated.
Literally NONE of them can, every Netflix adaptation has been dOGGGshit
If they mess this up… Let God have mercy on their poor souls😭
As long as it follows the original series everything will be fine
The Creator of animated series ATLA left way early in the development due to creative differences, and the orignal composeres who did the animated series reject the offer to compose this because of the original creators
has zero involvement on this show.
I don't know that screams disaster in a making for me.
I want a scene of uncle Iroh singing Leaves from the vine, falling slow like fragile tiny little shells drifting in the cold 😢

Lmao ikr 😂😂
@@apriliansyahmuhammad348His scar isn’t that big
@@themastermind3173Ur right. Its actually bigger!
Yup.
Might I mention 2 horrifying things in Katara and Sokka's family
1: Sokka was sexist, saw badass warrior girls, and then willingly and without resistance abdicated such a perspective. very Skeptical and Scientific, he saw and example of something that disproved a rule he believed, and that proved the rule was not true. a mind like that was goin to rot in the middle of nowhere because of a War
2: Sokka grew up with no one, everyone his own age was murdered because they were water benders, the siblings only had each other. Sokka respected Gramgram's order to watch the avatar, and Their father never belittled Katara when we saw them
That would mean, his only example of girls was Katara
Oh look guys! It’s Uong! Good to see him back
I loved Avatar so much I became violent as soon as I heard this announced. Same with One Piece. If Netflix can make these 2 work when cartoon to live action has failed so many times, I will give them my soul.
Why am I not putting soo much expectations into this
Because 99.9% of live action movies and tv shows based on a comic book, anime, cartoon, or manga almost always end up being crappy.
Netflix shows always has three types of genres:
1. Flawless gold
2. Overwhelming disappointment
3. Completely forgettable
To be honest, I am expecting this to be one of the latter two

Katara and sokka are clearly the darker characters in the originals. And for some reason that makes people mad like you can’t clearly see that they have color in there skin. What about being black does the world hate so much I will never understand but I’ve seen so many comments saying “katara and sokka are supposed to be light” THEY LITERALLY WEREN’t in the show. They were brown and their entire tribe had darker skin. You can visible see it so why argue what is a fact.
Exactly if they are not darkskin in the new tv show, I don't think I can watch it
The Water Tribe is based off Inuit/Native American culture. If the idea is for the actors to be from the cultures represented in this show. Then it doesn't make sense to have black people, or dark skinned people in general, portray them. Considering the outrage when Netflix essentially backwashed Cleopatra for that 'documentary', Netflix wants to play it safe by having real Native Americans/Inuits play the role of Sokka and Katara.
At least they weren't whitewashed again.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl there are lots of natives inuit who are black and brownskin.
There were shades of darker people in south and north America way before slavery. That goes for Egypt also,
Geez you racist people sure are press that darkskin people achieving better.
Just like your ancestors before you, your obsession with black people is very disgusting and it's not cute.
Don't even try to claim, I got black in me or I'm black, like most trolls do. I know a racist non black person just by the way they talk and view things..
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl but the point is that katara and sokka are clearly darker than the other characters in the original show. That’s a fact not my opinion. They could play it safe too by casting people who actually looked like the characters.
@@Beatz123 But again you'll run into the problem of misrepresentation of the culture that inspired said fictional culture. If you make them dark skinned, there could be accusations of black washing Native American culture. It's a really fine line they have to walk in regards of that.
NETFLIX, I swear to god, you BETTER NOT SCREW THIS ONE UP!
They will. They've screwed every other anime adaptation they've done. I've no hopes for this or One Piece.
@@MrMikellsof88Hopefully it will at least be better than the 2010 film adaptation.
Zuko's scar is kinda underwhelming. Instead of 30% of his face being burned we got a bad case of red shadows.
Aangs clothes look to fresh for 100 years trapped in ice
They look like cosplayers to me 😢 their clothes look like costumes, not clothing that their characters wear everyday, u know? It looks artificial and not natural. The casting was better than the movie that never exists 😂
These are just promo shots, not show stills. Of course they aren't going to look lived-in. If you want to show off your costumes, you want them to look pristine.
Please say this one's better than the uhh... *Cough* last one.
This isn't a live action trailer. It a first look at stills.
I feel like aangs original casting was better but the newer ones for the rest is good
99% sure it'll be bad. the whole selling point so far is that they picked actors who look like the animated characters. that means everything else, the writing, acting, visuals, are all mediocre or worse.
it'll be like Netflix's own Cowboy Bebop, but at a bigger scale because of ATLA's popularity.
@@user-pi2dh9ny8z no, i absolutely prefer that they stuck to non-white actors, as according to the animated characters.
the point that you've missed is that this is the sole selling point of this production, i.e. the gimmick, likely at the expense/neglect of everything else that makes a good series. you may wanna look up the word gimmick, going by your lack of English language comprehension.
@@user-pi2dh9ny8zoh u r sooo smart
Bro, the animation studio they chose animated for Dune. All actors have a background in martial arts, the dorector doesn’t want to change the story too much and the cast is so dedicated the stuntmen did a mock fight with animation a year ago. Looked cool.
Not only that but all involved are fans of the show and they are using the newest tech available for recording (some incredibly expensive dome thing) and have a budget of 15 million per episode. I’m hyped.
@@user-pi2dh9ny8z i'm setting expectations based on Netflix's history of live action shows and animation adaptations. to expect a level of quality similar to what a company has historically delivered is as realistic as it gets.
on the other hand, what makes you even think this is going to be the exception to history? that this is going to be good in spite of Netflix's track record?

It looks better than the Shamamamamalan shitshow but I'm personally not going to bother to watch a remake of something that was already done to perfection. Why does netflix keep taking on these no win projects? 50 bucks says this is Bebop all over again.
Same goes for One Piece. The trailer they released for that does not instil confidence.
Yup. That's my exact thoughts on the matter too. Netflix doesn't know wtf to do anymore. All they keep doing is cash grab crap.
@@MrMikellsof88agreed.
I agree. They (both producers, streamers etc and the audience) think that both animations and games' end goal is to be adapted into a movie. They are already good as the source material and when you put them in reality, you lost the exaggration of the work. They become more realistic so it becomes dull. There so few good game/animation adaptations, because when you see the source material you can see how movie-like they are. The Last of Us for example... that game was like tv show already. Narration to music to cinematography was very realistic and simplistic, so I wasn't suprised when the tv show turned out good. They even add more story to the series. I am more excited for the new upcoming avatar cartoon series...

Animated classics don't need real-life adaptations. The way characters are animated is a core part of that character's identity. For example, the character of Aang only functions as an animated character due to his exaggerated animated expressions + movements in everything he does. It's impossible for a real-life actor to capture that, no matter how good that actor is. It will only come across hollow attempt to imitate the original with none of the charm. What's the point?

Sokka looks of he looks like he has the build of handsome squidward in. A weird way
I think sokka would he the hardest character to play. His the comedy of every episode.
These guys didn’t learn their lesson from the previous live action film of Avatar
Little stuck on the fact that they didn’t give katana or Sokka blue eyes they are supposed to have to signify waterbenders, and aang the grey eyes of an air bender, just like earthbenders are green, and firebenders red. It’s the little details that are the difference between a good series and a great one.
It would be culturally awkward and insensitive to slap blue eyes on indigenous people, as a native american we all have issues with being whitewashed like in other shows. In the cartoon a lot of characters looked similar so the eye colors helped distinguish between groups. Now with the live action that will not be a thing, you have more issues than a bad show if you can't tell an indigenous person from a Korean person
@@benjordan1971 I completely understand that, if this was a series about the indigenous, but it’s not. This is a fictional show set in a completely different world that is loosely based around Inuit culture; in the cartoon, their eyes are a large part of THIER cultural identity. I don’t get why every show these days need to include our issues in worlds that are supposed to be completely different to our own. I already live through all the shit going on in our own world, why would I then want to see the same unresolved issues on screen? It’s fantasy because you are supposed to escape reality, not relive it over and over. And they are actors, their entire job is to play a character, not be yourself; they put on makeup, different clothing, have different personalities, change hair colours and styles etc. If something as simple as an eye colour change is so blasphemous when you change everything else about you to fit the role, then they should not take on that role.
@@benjordan1971You make it sound like having eye colors that aren't brown or black is a bad thing. Plenty of POC have colored eyes due to mixed lineages but does that make them white? No it doesn't. Lots of black people have not only colored eyes, but also varying colors of hair and skin tones. But even the lightest of black people still identify as black even when they could pass for a white person. Same with Arabs: it's been an ongoing debate for decades as to whether or not they should be considered white. Some say yes while others say no. Have you ever heard of the Kalash people? They are an ethnic minority in Afghanistan in an isolated region of the Hindu Kush Mountains. They are mostly known for the fact that they have blonde hair and blue and green eyes. Yet they still identify themselves as being part of the Afghan people even though they could pass as an ethnic Swedish or German person. Many ethnic Persians are almost the same as Europeans in terms of appearance yet they don't identify as white. Look at Latinos: when Encanto was released, they didn't mind that Pepa was a red head with pale skin when the rest of her family looked like standard Latinos. The reason being is such things happen in real life due to their mixed gene pool.
And what does your comment 'being white washed because of blue eyes' mean for Native Americans that were born with said eyes? As a result of colonialism and mixed unions (both willingly and mass r*pe), many who identify as Native American aren't pure blooded. I personally knew a girl who was 1/4 Native American and she was a red head with bright green eyes. But she was still a registered member of her mothers tribe. And I've seen a lot of Native American politicians who have been jumping into the ring being criticized for 'not being really Native American'. IE having a white last name or having too light of a skin tone.
Does your comment suggest you don't consider those kind of individuals as Native American? I get what your saying, I really do. But there are flaws in your explanation.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl I'm simply saying it's culturally awkward to put blue eyes on an actor who is of a native group who doesn't have blue eyes
@@benjordan1971 That would make sense if the story took place in the real world. But since it isn't there's room to play around with simple things like eye color. I've seen Chinese dramas where they give characters colored eyes and hair even though all the actors are Chinese. The reason being those shows and movies take place in fictional universes. I get what you are saying, but having the actors wear colored contacts would give them a sense of uniqueness. It's not about distinguishing ethnic groups from each other, it's about giving individual characters their own sense of uniqueness. But I personally am not going to complain about the eye color if they decide not to do it.
And while we are on the subject, I have to ask for your opinion. People are complaining that they should of chosen either black actors or dark skinned actors for the Water Tribe since they are portrayed as having dark tan to light brown skin. And when it's pointed out that, since the Water Tribe is based off Inuit/Native American culture, the actors should be Native American. And they get riled up about it and say it's another form of white washing. What are your thoughts about that?
I'm so excited for this
Why does the actor for Sokka look like the guy from the "ember island players" episode with the play lmao
ANIMATED!!!! ANIMATED!!!! ANIMATED!!!! NOTHING ELSE BUT THAT!!!!!
I swear if they don’t add the cabbage guy I’ll be pissed 😂
True
This reminds me of the play the Avatar squad saw in book 3
That's Great!
Imo, no live action show or film will ever capture the charm and colorful artstyle of the original avatar show, and sequel
I really hope Sokka has a sense of humor in this one. Netflix, I trust you will give us your best shot. If not, you’re gonna hear about it.
i think that really is going to come down to how much charisma boomerang has...
First real trailer: ONG
Us: FKING NOT AGAIN
This looks good, but I'm also not gonna get my hopes up cause it looks great, cause we know what happened last time. Then again, I'm looking forward to seeing the owner of Kim's Convenience be the badass tea-loving Iroh
Zuko with the eternal black eye.
Tbh this doesn’t need a live action anything. Just leave us with the animation 😩
Oh nooooo, looked like someone draw a arrow with blue marker on aang’s head 😂😂😂
As long as they don't try to squeeze the entire first season in 2 hours and call "aang" "ung"...
What kind of music composition is this? Very inspiring.
The casting is amazing.
People talking about the last Airbender not realizing that was Ong's journey. Time to see Aang!
i really really hope this is good but the main thing that worries me other than the writers leaving is that the older characters like sokka and zuko look _too_ old. they’re no more than 16 in the show so i’m a worried
All they really need to understand well is the comedy and the action. There is so much joy in the original, don't make it all somber
