So they recasted Sokka to FIT as the girl’s brother. You know usually when you watch things as a kid, you dont realize how bad it is until you eventually rewatch as an adult (like the Green Lantern movie). I thought this movie was crap even when I watched it as 9 or 10 year old🤦♂️😂
It's probably because we didn't much care about storylines, acting, etc. when we were a kid... For this movie, I used to wait only for the fight scene, the rest was so boring..
For anyone who’s worried about the Netflix adaptation of ATLA, just remember that it literally can’t be any worse than this. If this movie did anything, it serves as an example of what not to do.
The only good thing to come out of this movie is the actress who played Yue (Seychelle Gabriel) went on to play the voice of Asami Sato in The Legend of Korra.

I wouldn’t mind if they did something in the Netflix show , but it wouldn’t really fit as their going for a vibe more accurate to the OG show while the movie was a bit more serious
Noah Ringer had previous martial arts training, that's why his moves look so natural. In fact, the reason why they picked Noah as Aang is because they saw footage of him fighting, nobody bothered to ask if he had acting training too.
I mean, his natural way of being when he wasn't "in-character" matched real Aang's character a lot more. Even the more experienced actors couldn't find a way to make it work.
@Purple Citrine I heard something tragic about that, apparently Jackson Rathbone wanted the role because he wanted to avoid typecasting by playing a different character from his usual serious and stone-faced ones, what better role for that than Sokka? So I'm laying the blame of this entirely on Shyamalan's directing
They said "Earth bending is the best in the show" minutes before the scene where like 10 earth benders make a bunch of moves and gestures to move one puny rock! Lol.
Producers sitting down to see the awesome smash hit their 150million dollars has produced; synchronized yelling and stomping while a tiny rock is moving across the screen. GO FX TEAM!!!
The problem with this movie is that Shyamalan didn't just want to make it, he wanted to "improve" it. He thought the show's story was great but the humor and silliness only appealed to children, so he assumed removing it and making the story serious and grounded would make adults like it more.
You could do a serious grounded avatar and still have it be good. This movie failed on every front of being an adaption and being an adaption that's reimagined..
They changed the mechanics of fire bending in this movie. In the movie, fire benders could only manipulate the fire and not produce it from within. Only Iroh and Zuko had the ability to produce fire from their Chi and as stated by Ozai, anyone during Sozins comet. The writers made fire benders weak af but they still managed to rule most of the Earth.
Honnestly i really believe every fan of the show should really watch this movie at least ONCE because it really makes you realize how good the show is lol
I loved how in the movie they fled the village, arrived at their next destination after flying there off screen and then she was like "oh shit I didn't ask your name"
Not gonna lie…Yue was the only one who was casted to look like her character and her acting was good, actually good…surrounded by dry acting. Also her death was probably the one thing I prefer in this film than the show. Also…I love Aang’s tattoo design.
Those Earthbenders tho, All that energy to move that one tiny rock, it would have been better to just throwing a rock by hand and it would have proven to be more effective than the actual earthbenders themselves!
That's one of the biggest misconceptions. The single guy before the group does that is the guy throwing the rock, the group of dancing guys are making the rock wall come up to block the fire blast
I feel like the worst thing from that scene wasn't the fact that the choreography and the earth bending is bad. It's the fact that they're surrounded by the land, you know, the element that they're good at? How did they never even once tried to rebel? IIRC, in the show, at least they were in a ship, surrounded by water.
12:45 The funniest scene in this whole movie was the dance troop bending one slow moving rock I can watch that over and over again. It's like the animators played a prank or something
The CGI in the movie isn't actually that bad. People equate RENDERING with COMPOSITION and ANIMATION and that's just not the case. The ANIMATION of something is how it MOVES. RENDERING is how it's MADE. The RENDER of the bending is quite nice. The COMPOSITION is trash. That's when it all comes together-lighting shadows etc. When the Firebenders attack the Earthbenders, there should be a light against the rock; fire is a light source. There's nothing there which causes audiences to go "Wait what? that's bad CGI." The wind effects aren't half bad, but the water, earth, and fire effects are...not great. Not to mention, the actual MOVEMENTS the actors all do for the bending is not at all like how real martial arts works. In the show, the animators studied real martial artists for the different bending styles. Airbending is Baguazhang aka Bagua or "circle walking”. Waterbending is Tai chi. Earthbending is Southern Praying Mantis style for Toph specifically since she does a lot of close range attacks, and overall it is Shaolin kung fu. And Firebending is Northern Shaolin style which like Firebending itself is VERY aggressive. There was a lot of time and dedication to this and it pays off extremely well. Creating fight scenes in any medium is hard enough, in animation it's a DAUNTING task because you need to make it look grounded. For all their faults with the writing, Bryke (Bryce and Michael) they did a really great job with the world building.
Reminds me of how Netflix made a live action remake of Winx Club... but instead of having the fun energy of the original show, they turned it into a Riverdale clone. I loved Winx Club as a kid and what they did with that live action remake was so bad lmao

It's unbelievable that M Night Shyamalan calls himself a huge fan of the show and got so so many things wrong. I highly recommend everyone to watch the Nostalgia Critics The last airbender review. It really highlights things wrong with this movie plus it's hilarious.
No offense to Noah Ringer (Aang's actor) but I find it odd how they chose a martial artist (and a rather good one at that) and taught him to act, rather than finding an actor they could teach martial arts to.
As much as I hate the movie, I love what it's done for me. I make it a mandatory rewatch every time I rewatch the series and it just makes me love the series more.
Ah yes, how convinient that our main trio is completely white while everyone else around them is asian/poc. Never understood why they decided to literally whitewash Katara and Sokka. Also, my god it's so annoying listening to them pronounce majority of the names wrong and on top of that make the bending look slow and awful. At least Appa is kinda cute?
I don't really like when they make white characters Asian or poc and vis versa. Apparently the girl in this is the daughter of the producer and the producer demanded his daughter to be in it. So they made her brother also white. So yes pretty bad casting no offense to the actors the producer should have known better.
@@stynershiner1854 I kinda get it, but it's a bit odd to change the names to honour the asian pronounciation and then whitewash Aang, an asian character. If they had done better casting and Shyamalan explained his reasoning, it would've been more understandable. But instead they made the trio white. Hopefully the new live action show does a better job overall, but I don't have my hopes up
@@stynershiner1854 only problem I have with that is what's the point in making the names more "authentically asian" if you then butcher the casting? but regardles of the name and casting, the show in inspired by a mix-match of asian cultures but it's not actually set in asia. so you don't even necessarily have to pronounce name or cast everyone in an authentic way, following the original format makes more sense than trying to twist everything a different way.
I bet you've never bitched about how culturally white figures like Heimdall & Valkyrie (from actual Norse mythology and not some cartoon) are played by blacks in the MCU. Gotta keep up the anti-white hate, though...
Fun fact about the girl that played Yue in this, the one you mentioned was one of the only good actors. She would go on to voice Asami in Legend of Korra.
The funniest/saddest part of this movie's existence is that the original series has a dedicated recap episode that covers the same material, plus the 2 other books, and still did a better job recapping in a few minutes than this did in over an hour.
"He was bending tiny stones at us from behind a tree." For a second, I thought they switched movies to Men in tights lol. Would've been a much better watch too:)))
I know this is out of topic but you guys should really react to "Everything, Everywhere, All at once" once it hits digital if u guys haven't seen it yet. It is srsly a good film and a lot of people are talking about it.
I love how badly they fucked up the earthbender prison sequence, by moving the setting off of the metal ship (which was the entire point), and then having Katara remind the earthbenders that they're surrounded by earth.
I don’t know if you two ever found out, but there is a book you can find at Barnes & Noble called The Search. It answers the question that Zuko asked “where is my mother?” The book is ssoooo good because it’s like a giant comic and all the characters are drawn and speak just like they did in the show. They also have a book on how Republic City came to be.
I'm only ten minutes in and I can confirm the RUclips Closed Captioning Makes this a lot more fun. Agni Kai turned into I'd be Gay and This is a Warship turned into This is Abortion.
I'm pretty sure m night shyamalan even said he watched the whole series with his kids and they were the ones that introduced it to him or something I seen once and Buddy clearly wasn't paying attention enough ☠️
I just recently watched The Sixth Sense, which is undoubtedly Shyamalan's best work; it nails every element that makes a great movie in the right ways and to see his later works like The Last Airbender is not only baffling but also kinda heartbreaking as well. 💔
I remember walking out of the theater having enjoyed the movie well enough. That was prior to having watched the series. I can no longer watch this movie. That said I can’t really blame M. Night for the result. It seems clear the studio wanted to condense each season into a single movie. I fail to see how any director could have completed that task without a disjointed and emotionally anemic result. The beauty of the show is the time spent building those character relationships to achieve emotional payoff.
You guys are funny as hell leaving that part of the review in where you messed with the AC 🤣 Greg even directs Olivia where to start again, but it never cut 😂😂😂 Made me feel like I was really watching one of the Patreon watch along episodes 👍
I’ll try to say one positive to freshen things up, the mask for the blue spirit looks cool. The king hair is a neat addition. That’s about all I can think of
I remember seeing this in cinema when it came out. There were like 5 other people than me and my cousin there. I'll never get that waste of a time back lmao
Thanks for doing this reaction video guys. You just kicked my long-dormant Last Airbender PTSD back into high gear. Lol It's like a trip down memory pain. 🤣
So I have this movie on dvd. I perfectly understand why ppl ABSOLUTELY HATE this movie. But I kinda like it. I think it’s bc of the nostalgia cuz I used to watch this ALL THE TIME as a kid. I’d rate it like a 6.5/10.
You know.. If I have no knowledge of the source material (or maybe the source material doesn't exist) and categorized it as some obscure lower-end movie I stumble upon then maybe I would give it that (then again, I would give Pirates of the Caribbean 5/4? -honestly they blend in for me- a 6-ish up too and I don't think PoC is as bad -or maybe I'm just biased). But alas, tis only a wish.
@@sebastianpaz1138 I DO know how bad the movie is. It rushes literally everything and they miss pronounce most of the names. That’s not even all the problems with this movie. But because of the nostalgia I’d still watch this movie if I was bored or something.
Well you can redeem yourself from this movie by doing a reaction to Everything Everywhere All At Once! It is now out on digital and I'm absolutely waiting in anticipation to watch you react to this cinematic masterpiece! 👀
Did you notice that the fire benders can not generate their own fire, they have to have a physical source of flame near them to be able to firebend, this would make them the worst of all the elements because at least water is usually quite common everywhere, then earth and air is always around. If you want to see a funny video watch Nostalgia Critic rip this movie a new element.
I finally realized what this is.... Somebody didn't have the time to watch the whole show and asked if their was a condensed version, they were then shown The Ember Island Players version and the movie was based off of that.
Set pieces and effects were decent, the execuation and directing was terrible. This movie proved to me that a live action Avatar COULD indeed work, as the movments were nice and the environment was great, but it was just awfully scripted and paced. Also, the fight scenes made little sense in some parts. The choreography in the cartoon is based on real life, so it could work very well in live action, however this movie missed the mark by a mile.
Well...got any other movie recommendations? lol

As much as I hate the movie, I love what it's done for me. I make it a mandatory rewatch every time I rewatch the series and it just makes me love the series more.
Nice. I watched it first with my brother when he was very young. Then we binged the series. It took a bad movie to make me love this show more lol.
“My name is oong, and I’m the ovatar”
Me: "No ur not"
I ran aAwayy bhut Naw I'm vak
The names are pronounced right if you consider that the story takes place in Asia. The names in the show were Americanized.
"what is happening?"
Perfect way to drum up this movie
Who’s watching this after watching the new Netflix series?? I am! Netflix did a great job compared to this movie!
I remember taking my brother to see this movie in theaters because we watched/loved the series and wishing to turn back time! 😢
I know this is out of topic but you guys should really react to "Everything, Everywhere, All at once" once it hits digital if u guys haven't seen it yet. It is srsly a good film and a lot of people are talking about it.
just imagine being so exited about this when it came out and than going to the theaters and being royally pissed off.
Fun fact: The actress that played Yue does the voice of Asami in LOK!
That woman seems to be cursed.
@@Serryy how? Asami ended up being a much better character that Yue ever was
@@blueberrydenim4807 Because LoK and the whole love triangle story was so messed up.
@@Serryy I’ve seen the love triangle angle done much worse & they move on from that relatively quick in the series anyway
@@blueberrydenim4807 If I remember correctly they give Korra amnesia and revive the triangle in the worst possible way in season 2.
Hahahaha "Where the f#&* is my big tadpole?!"
The actual crime is that I watched this awful movie before the series because somebody told me it would be a good introduction
Olivia confiding in the cat is the kind of therapy required after seeing this movie 😂😂
i just notice that sokka is the guy with multiple personality disorder from criminal minds.
Jackson Rathbone, as Jasper Hale from Twilight.
I love how badly they fucked up the earthbender prison sequence, by moving the setting off of the metal ship (which was the entire point), and then having Katara remind the earthbenders that they're surrounded by earth.
I like how katara didn’t know aangs name after calling him aang 😂😂😂
The one positive thing I can say about this movie is that the set design and overall look of this whole film looks great...that's it
I don’t know if you two ever found out, but there is a book you can find at Barnes & Noble called The Search. It answers the question that Zuko asked “where is my mother?”
The book is ssoooo good because it’s like a giant comic and all the characters are drawn and speak just like they did in the show. They also have a book on how Republic City came to be.
One of my favourites. An All time classic. It's amazing unlike what some people think
I'm talking about the show I didn't watch this shit
This is the face of a good man ⚖️
They had us in the first half not gonna lie
"earth bending is the coolest here" right before 6 people dancing around only for one to throw a tiny pebble at the fire nation guys.
I'm only ten minutes in and I can confirm the RUclips Closed Captioning Makes this a lot more fun. Agni Kai turned into I'd be Gay and This is a Warship turned into This is Abortion.
I don’t care what everybody says, that last scene with giant ass tsunami and “Flow like water” ost is fucking amazing
This makes me feel a lot better about the live-action Netflix show, simply looking at the announced cast makes me feel better about it
Be prepared to be disappointed, the show runners of ATLA have left.
@@beautifulbliss5883 True, but it makes me feel good that Bryke WERE heavily involved and selected the show runners
Aang- "but im the avatar! And im back now!"
Everyone else- silence... just such loud silence.
I'm pretty sure m night shyamalan even said he watched the whole series with his kids and they were the ones that introduced it to him or something I seen once and Buddy clearly wasn't paying attention enough ☠️
Fun Fact: the Firelords' Throne room scene was shot inside of a high school gym
I just recently watched The Sixth Sense, which is undoubtedly Shyamalan's best work; it nails every element that makes a great movie in the right ways and to see his later works like The Last Airbender is not only baffling but also kinda heartbreaking as well. 💔
I’m so glad Greg is getting his 1 mil subscriber milestone soon. Was a sub since Ryan right and this was a long journey!
I couldn't watch after I saw that inuit people were white and they called Sokka sooka
Today, I became a Patreon member, my first ever Patreon subscription! Yayyy! 🥰
❤️❤️❤️
I remember trying to watch this during lockdown and i think i got 17 minutes in or so and i just couldn’t anymore
“Ong”s actor was actually not an actor he was chosen because he knew martial art
You guys should definitely react to the last Airbender pitch meeting. It's a must watch
You guys are funny as hell leaving that part of the review in where you messed with the AC 🤣 Greg even directs Olivia where to start again, but it never cut 😂😂😂
Made me feel like I was really watching one of the Patreon watch along episodes 👍
Best part of this movie was the music during the end credits.
My only explanation for this is M.Night didn't do a movie of the series. He did an adaptation of the Ember Island players' version.
Fun fact the actress who played Yue (arguably the best character in this movie) is Asami’s voice actor.
Gotta watch the pitch meeting for this😂😂
Saw this high I couldn’t stop laughing 😂 they destroyed this movie bad
It's like when Eragon was movie adapted. You can't expect multiple books to be shoved into a couple hours
@@zacharyjackson1829 Right I agree worse movie ever lol
Thanks for doing this reaction video guys. You just kicked my long-dormant Last Airbender PTSD back into high gear. Lol It's like a trip down memory pain. 🤣
So I have this movie on dvd. I perfectly understand why ppl ABSOLUTELY HATE this movie. But I kinda like it. I think it’s bc of the nostalgia cuz I used to watch this ALL THE TIME as a kid. I’d rate it like a 6.5/10.
Lmaooo you don’t see how bad it is this movie doesn’t deserve a rate Lmaooo
@@fwluhhty ok just making sure lol I still wouldn’t give it a rate
@@sebastianpaz1138 oh ok cool
Greg was over it when he saw the spirit dragon 😆🤣
Well you can redeem yourself from this movie by doing a reaction to Everything Everywhere All At Once! It is now out on digital and I'm absolutely waiting in anticipation to watch you react to this cinematic masterpiece! 👀
Surprised you didn't notice that the Earth Bender prison was changed from a metal ship to an ocean to just a random cliffside made of EARTH lol
