yea its extremely bloated not gonna lie, im playing cold steel 1 right now and holy shit so much text. The only thing keeping me going is the great combat system

1. Trails in the sky first chapter
2. Trails in the sky second chapter
3. Trails in the sky third chapter(Takes half year of the original story)
4. Trails of Zero
5. Trails of Azure& Trails of coldsteel( Both events happen at the same time it doesn’t matter which you play first)
6. Trails of COLDSTEEL 2
7. Trails of COLDSTEEL 3(3 years after the original game)
8. Trails of COLDSTEEL 4
A nice conclusion of the saga. From the events of Liberl, to Crossbell and Erebonia, it all comes down to this.
I haven't even started playing Cold Still, still on the Sky games, but I enjoyed hearing a spoiler-free summation of your experience. I'm really looking forward to these games.
Just started trails in the Sky FC. Excited to get this whole saga under my belt and and hopefully the cross bell games are finally ported/translated over to switch/PS4 by the time I get to them.

I played trails of cold steel 1 and now going back to trails in the sky. I plan on playing the whole series throughout the next year or two

@@dylangirard4670 Oh no, playing Cold Steel first as first timers is actually a good thing to get hooked. Most people when they see the graphics/art style of Trails in the Sky they immediately back out. Playing Cold Steel 1 first is not really recommended, but a good place to start for first timers.
@@LemmyKon I don’t mind the trails in the sky graphics. Visuals to me aren’t all that important in a video game. Gameplay first must be fun. Then story/characters if it’s a story driven game. Then music then graphics. Cold steel isn’t the most visually impressive game these days anyway. Cold steel I actually put down for a year before getting back into it. I guess it was just a case of playing the wrong game at the wrong time. But once I picked it back up I really started enjoying it.

Alisa and altina are 2 of the best characters to have in your party Alisa for her heavenly gift craft that gave hp and cp regeneration with insight status and altina for her absolute reflect order, pretty much got me thru most of the game, the septium vein arcus skill makes enemies drop more sepith which can be converted into mira for equipment etc or to upgrade slots for arcus units, it's a grind of course, but I did have fun and enjoyed the game, I'll be playing hajimari and kuro when they come out as well.
Just got my LE from NISA a few days ago. Haven't started yet. Want to make sure I have lots if time to devote to it.
A lovely review! This series has been a part of my life for a long time. It's so rewarding to see the characters from previous arcs come back. It's a huge reunion.
I just finished Cold Steel 4 today and my friend had to let me know about the post credit scene. Glad I got to see it
I understand the sanity loss that comes with getting through these in time for embargo. CSIII they gave us I think 5-6 weeks early. This one I got 4 weeks early. I was expecting it to be a 45-50 hour game (Thanks howlongtobeat) thinking it'd be the shortest, but I was dead-wrong. Lost so much sleep trying to finish "In time." If I didn't have a long weekend for Canada-Thanksgiving I simply wouldn't have pulled it off. Stopped fishing after act 2, started abusing the hell out of the fast-forward and only talked to the NPCs that looked like they were doing something interesting. Still only got myself down to about 95 hours. And that was on Normal...
Great job on the review dude. The part with "everybody under one roof" was one of the highlights for me too. Literally takes over an hour to talk to them, but it's fanservice done right haha. Agree on the use of the curse as well.

As much as I still love the series, I'm about ready for this continuity to end. They have too much going on at this point, and yeah, they're having a tougher time balancing it for sure, and I feel its really gonna affect the writing from here on out.

I’m so sad that it’s over personally (after hajimari) but I’m weak and biased that way! I’m actually one of the few that beat it in under 60 though xD
Nice review. I just got platinum a few hours ago. The final bosses were a struggle, but beating them was satisfying.
Man, even though this video is two years old, I just wanna say I really respect and appreciate the way you handled the review, taking your time with the game and basically being your normal completionist self about playing it, even at the cost of losing those "early bird" views the algorithm likes so much. You put more importance on the quality of your experience, and therefore the quality of your review, than you did on income, and I just appreciate that. As a viewer that tells me your review wasn't rushed, and that your opinion can be trusted.
I remember one time, a friend of mine asked me when cold steel was in vita and on sale if it was worth it and I told him 100% yes, now he promoted to even more people and everyone that has played it has turned on their favorite JRPG franchise by far.
Really loved all the things that happened on this one, and all the fan service moment of everybody getting together just brought out a warmth inside me and happiness, the only hard thing to convince people to play this is the barrier to play all the other games but it’s so worth it, congrats on falcom on making the best franchise on world building ever.
My only problem with it was semi bringing back a character that should have been gone kinda lessened the ending of cs3

Yeah, I’m glad I looked into the series! Just finished it and felt a sense of satisfaction and happiness. Playing through the Nightmare Difficulty now. Oh and I found that extra scene and went 😱
I'm currently almost half way through the 2 game n looking forward to play 3 n 4...this series grew on me
Just finished my second run on Nightmare >.> can say game is good and a good finale to the Cold Steel Arc ,got answers to many questions on the other hand , many new question did pop up ( especially aftert your little talk with McFireBro later in the game ) gonna finish it 2-3 times more for sure cuz its just fun for me , looking forward to Hajimari and how that turns out EDIT : Also seeing the chars from all 3 Arcs coming together really brings a happy tear to the Eyes , having Estelle/Joshua , Rean and Lloyd on one screen exchaning stuff with one another is just awesome.

btw nice review i was wating for it "as you know lol" + the joshua reference alone makes the game worth it i think XD "for the new trails game maybe we'll get a name in 20/12 in falcom day and hopefuly some screenshots to see how mch the new engine will improve graphics and i won't say no to an in-fight screenshot to maybe get an idea about the new battle system"
ps : i liked how Tarks Gauntlet commented in every single Cold Steel 4 review to give his opinion, this shows how much he cares about the serie and how honest he was in his review for the game after all he said in that video he still wanted to see other fans opinions respect man
Playing through it, couldn't help but feel like some of the neutral (Around half) expressions would've been more suitable for the characters full health
I started playing this LOCS on the Vita .... And when I upgraded to a P3 I wanted more of this Game and all jokes aside I want all the Other Cold Steel games to come out on the 4 & 5

Legend of Heroes is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite RPG series out there. RPGs are the very core of me as a gamer. While I love RPGs, not a lot hit me on an emotional level and this series did it in more ways than one. I got emotional after beating CSIV and definitely made the effort of playing through Sky and Zero/Ao worth it
I like the review I think you should include if old save data carries from older games and what system you're running cuz you mentioned to drop them frame rates maybe what somebody else is running might matter
I mean for the system the title in the video says switch and I mention in the review that the switch version is the only one available. Soooooo lol

Man, I'm thinking of getting Cold Steel IV next month on PS4 or wait for PC version(Which might come in march or april 2021) I just started with Cold Steel 3 and there's a lot of references from the previous games, yeah people should play the previous series first before getting into Cold Steel 3 and 4.
To be frank you really should play the prequels BEFORE even starting Cold Steel but yeah Cold Steel 1 and 2 are playable without knowing stuff from the prequels, too. But playing CS3 without the prequels is insanity.

I started with the prequels since april, I played Liberl arc, then Crossbell and now Erebonia arc.
I hope somehow the devs make enough profit to just atleast add in just enough voices in the partially voiced scenes to keep the consistency (bonus points if they go beyond that and voice every cutscene even the minor ones that takes control away from you lol if they can somehow get even close to atlus's level popularity wise that'd be when I expect them to hopefully tackle and patch up the voice work at the very least, the gameplay stuff otherwise Is overall fine outside cs2's enemy evasion rate 😂)

He's gone for the entire 1st act. You get him probably 35-40 hours into the game.
I will say that, after playing this and then playing the other arcs, most of the hair change options look a lot like callbacks to previous characters. For example, Fie's black hair and Amber eyes are a call back to Joshua, Ash's hair color is a call back to Dudley and Machias, Altina's to both Millium and Tio, Juna's for Lloyd and maybe Alisa, Musse to the Seeker sisters and Kloe, Kurt's to Wazy, Alisa's to Elie, Tita's to Estelle, and Rean's to Agate. Obviously, I missed the mark on a couple of these, but I love this attention to detail.
Not even five minutes in and I am hyped. Just hearing how much you enjoyed the experience and not knowing anything else about the games or series (I came here to determine if I should buy a used copy of the game), I just wanted to let you know that I am happy for you and enjoyed your joy.

I'm just now at the beginning of Arc 3 I think. Haven't seen the title of the Arc yet. I'm over 40 hours in at this point. I don't think I'm even halfway through the game yet.
i mean idk depends on how you play it. nightmare is hard at couple of times when you only can use the NPC but its not that super duper hard. the hardest part is getting the MAX AP requirement esp the duo old monsters you need to kill them at the same time so you cant just kill X then Y you need to be close on beating them and S-crafted them/BIg spell
and the other one is after the conference because you need to split your party with the guest NPC which is i think annoying and some of them has AP requirement so you should like beat X and Z before Y which is again it means you have to tank stuff.
but prolly you can neglect some of them because you had alot of spare AP, but my OCD souls wants S every single chapter so thats what it is.
the biggest turning point for me its after September 1 in game calendar thats when everything got really easy as long as you can fish the U-mats.
Nah the boss fights on the conference are push overs even on nightmare with only guest characters. Joshua is straight up broken and so is Lloyd. The girl party kinda sucks because they are a bunch of undergeared casters but if you get your own Altina/Musse with proper set up you can easily blast the bosses before they take too many turns.
Only thing that matters is getting enough Speed to not get turn looped by bosses. Also for the love of god get the best divine knight gear for those last 3 fights because those fuckers are way too fast.
Please tell how did you play Ao No Kiseki, because I’ve having trouble trying figure out where or how to play it beside the Geofront version that’ll be coming out
there's both a translated PC and PSP version you can download depending on what's more convenient. i chose the PSP version and played it on an emulator.

I played CS 1-3 on PC but I couldn't wait for CS4 so I got it on PS4. The game really does struggle on PS4 though. I might buy it again on PC for the performance.
Been trying to get in the series for a while but I want to do it right and started from trails in the sky but it's just so much time between all the games and haven't event finished them, but I can say that the little I played It's been and awesome journey so far, the amount of details in the world and characters it's something that never ceases to amaze me

@@buttertoast1146 It's kind of important to play as much of the series as possible at least before you get to Cold Steel IV. The Crossbell games are one thing since there's still really no easy way to play them, but trying to go into Cold Steel IV without having any knowledge of the previous games is going to lead to confusion. There will be many things that players who only know about the Cold Steel games just won't be able to fully understand and appreciate. Sure you can still play Cold Steel IV after only playing Cold Steel 1, 2 and 3, but I would never recommend it. The experience can only be made better if you have played the other games.

Best game in the series IMO.
I'm a huge fan of the trails series and as a fan im really enjoying cs 4.. but my biggest and probably the only issue I have are the bonding event. I hate them.... most feel out of place and some i feel contradict with the characters personality. Also I feel it was a bad decision and horrible character development to have every female character just love rean for the sake of this stupid romance simulator.. it could also be possible that I was over it after choosing Alissa for 3 games and see no development in their relationship. Don't even get me started on rean possibly have a romance with his STUDENTS and younger sister (not blood related but stilll). Other then that I feel like this game is perfect. Just started act 3 and have over 100 gameplay hours.
Play on Nightmare, its worth it.
@Cole D'Amico I find it easy, though some do not agree. I'd recommend you to start playing at least from Cold Steel I though, otherwise you're gonna be pretty lost throughout the game.
@Cole D'Amico Don't play this game as your first trails game. It will ruin the others for you and you probably won't enjoy this one to its full potential.
90% of the reason to play this game is to see past storylines find their conclusions and see very old characters return and interact with new ones.
Coldsteel 1 has about the same combat minus the order mechanic and is a good entry point if you cannot stomach how dated Trails in the Sky FC is.
If you can handle Sky FC then start there even if its very dry, by the end of it you will be hooked on the series.
So I have played a lot of games on the PS4 and Xbox one. I am putting off buying newer consoles, so I started looking into many PS4 games I’ve never played. I came across this series about two weeks ago and missed some sails in psn, I bought the first one seems like a steep mountain to climb at the moment.
Finished the game about 10 minutes ago. Overall its a worthy end of the saga and it includes fantastic moments, but its also full of padding and filler missions and the endless test your resolve frenemies stand off bollocks that really made me feel tired of it all, and I am a massive fan of the series, so its really bad. Especially the first 2/3 of the 2nd act are abysmal. Luckily the game picks up later and the finale is nice feels train. I do wish we would see some of the other characters like Noel or Wazy, but the cast is massive already.
Wait till you play Hajimari, that game has more characters than cs4
agreed, that's one of the main things that's getting annoying as i'm going through this. the "i'm your enemy but not really because I'm just testing you" trope that's happening constantly throughout Act 2/3. between that and the "insert random ally to save the party" thing..
Played on nightmare mode, wasnt that difficult... like u said, only got harder by the end of the game

1 - Do your decisions from ToCS 3 impact the story of ToCS 4?
2 - Do you get to choose Fie as your lover? While I like Emma and Laura too,
the interactions with fies family (when they think you're dating her) are just the best

2 - Yes, but there aren't really any interactions with Zephyr of that nature in the game that I can remember

Very satisfied with the game, its story and its ending.
Alot of these costumes I can't find even among the dlc. Dammit Falcom is as bad as Intelligent Systems; I want to give you my money so why are you fighting me?!
Now to move on to Hajimari.
Trails games are always easy after Ao no kiseki. So just a suggestion, next time play hajimari in nightmare mode, you wont regret it.
Abyss mode is the right choice if you wanna see game over screen regularly lol

its good, but bloated. im a huge fan of having a set group for different parts of the story, so i like cs1 and cs3 over the sandbox that is cs2 and cs4. i feel like it adds more depth and characterization
In my experience
Ao no kiseki nightmare difficulty is 98
And trails of cold 4 nightmare difficulty is 94 or so
It has 4 more because of that nonsense final boss and that 5min Sigmund otherwise the difficulty is same
Or it felt the same because I didn't bother mush with s crafts in cs4 thou in ao I only defensive s crafts since one opponent scarft and its game over (sigmund, arios, Lance maiden)

I started playing with Cold Steel 3 and read the background of the first two. Just beat Cold Steel 4 last night. I have to say I don't think you need to play the other Trails games to understand or truly appreciate the 4 installment. I will agree that hard mode is like normal lol!
No...Just no lmao Playing CS 3 and 4 without playing the others is a disservice. Yes, you may enjoy it. But the enjoyment factor is 10x that, when you've played through the others. Why? Because you know every single character and event that took place in each title by this point. But hey, you do you 😅
Honestly CS4 is just Coldsteel taken to its logical extreme. Every issue that Coldsteel has is at its peak here.
Overly forced cheesy dialogue, empty characters, too many characters in every scene, irrelevant fights for padding, too many mechanics that make the game easy, mech battles, bond system now with romance.
This game made me realize what I dislike about Rean despite my general affinity for his story: He just doesn't connect to his story.
Rean only ever repeats the same pattern or arc in every game. Be sad > Find/Remember friends > Try to sacrifice himself for friends > Get an intervention > Become motivated to beat bad guy.
This wouldn't be a deal breaker if Rean didn't have the worst dialogue ever.
Rean only ever has his stupid leader of class 7 style dialogue in this game. In Cold Steel 1 Rean has some pretty personal moments with a bunch of the characters and you get to know a different side of Rean.
In CS4 he is always accompanied by 10+ people and every scene is just all of them talking the most unpersonal friendship nonsense.
I can legit predict all of their dialogue by having a basic understanding of each character and the scene context.
With CS4 done we can now see that some characters were entirely pointless additions to the cast. Machias is a cool dude but he got scammed out of any story relevance for all 4 games.
His claim to fame is that his dad knows Osborne and it never got him involved personally in anything. His dad didn't even do anything major.
Elliot also had to get a pity plot line where he defeats the curse with music just so he could have a tiny bit of relevance outside of being part of class 7.
You could probably reduce the number of class 7 members by fusing some of them together or cutting a few outright and it would be for the better.
The new class 7 members are honestly fine aside from Kurt who really didn't live up to the expectations I had when I heard that Muellers brother was in CS3.
Ash>Altina>Musse>Juna>Kurt
Ash and Altina get a lot of attention throughout both of their games and Musse gets a decent amount. Juna is hardcarried by crossbell and Chapter 2 of CS3.
Honestly the worst part about CS4 is how it treats everything that CS3 set up. Nothing matters anymore. Dead people come back, Bad people are actually good but controlled by evil plot device magic. The main bad guy is a literal who that was controlling Osborne all the time. Everyone is magically forgiven.
CS4 is an alright game which makes it a massive disappointment when you consider that this game is supposed to be pay off for everything that happened since Sky the 3rd.
This game did the bare minimum in terms of story.
I am happy that I am done with Coldsteel and am looking forward to hajimari and Calvard.
Though I am scared that the issues present here will continue or even worsen.
All i wish for is a small cast of at most 6 people.
Honestly despite the pacing, story plot device basically being blame the curse and the huge rooster being a bit hard to managed I still consider CS4 a good game not my favorite but a good finish to the main story for erebornia arc until Hajimari at least I’d give it 7.5-8/10

I agree with 100% in regards of the difficulty level, the only really really challenging fight in CS4 (in hade mode) was that last Divine Knight battle
I actually think CS4 is the easiest in the Cold Steel saga
Yeah the only struggle I had on nightmare was mech battles or the fight at the end of act 1 because I somehow had no Seraphic ring on any of the New Class 7 members and had to get max BP(Get both bosses to 50%hp).
Even the early game isn't as fucked up on high difficulty as it usually is. (Sky SC hard mode is literally restart the tutorial till you get good RNG)
Concequeses for Characters. The biggest problem for this game in my opinion. If a character is directly responsible for me losing an eye, my friend losing an arm, I'M NOT GOING TO INVITE HIM TO MY F$#@ING WEDDING!
I'm bot surprised that the game is good, or that it's formula is starting to show it's age a little, as I was starting to feel that towards the end of CSIII and haven't even played any of the Trails games before CS1. I will probably go back and play through the first 5 games at some point, but I'm not waiting that long to play CSIV. I'm only willing to wait until is gets its Switch port.
the voice acting comment has been my biggest issue since the first game, it's been very inconsistent. though the re-releases and the pc releases fixed it for 1 and 2 (mostly) for 3 and 4 it's still rather bothersome.
I started with CS games & I'll keep it this way, I liked them but not to the point to lose hours going back to play TitS trilogy or Ao/Zero. Falcom should drop the whole "you have to play 7+ games that took 10+ years in the making in order to fully enjoy the latest release", I really hope they drop this style & just do a contained story per game, if necessary then 2, tbh the writing isn't even that good outside of the lore, no one stays dead, all the MCs are perfect characters that make no mistakes, the immediate story is boring & even though there are wars & killings nothing happens to anyone!
There seems to be a purpose if no one stays dead. It doesn't help Crossbell and Erebonia arc happen concurrent with each other, so a lot has to happen to why no one dies.

The Grandmaster has a eternal regression plan, which if it sounds familiar is a reference to eternal return where history is repeated from ever happening in Egyptian, Roman to Hinduism philosophy. It also has a system that records casualties within Zemuria.
True ending could have been better but that's just me.

Shame that Gameplay vs watching cutscenes is 1\20.... I couldn't pass 3rd game and after 50 useless exposition about bread 🍞 I had to quit.
The good thing about Trails is that it's almost impossible to get spoiled by reviews because the plot is so damn complicated.
I'll say this I love the Legend of Heroes series but the Cold Steel arc was really bad and drawn-out when it didn't even need to be. I could rip apart this arc but best to leave it alone overall i cannot wait to play the next games and I'm skipping Hajimari as its just a rehash of plot and characters.
Trails is a good series plagued by slow storytelling. This series shouldn't take as long as it has to tell it's story. A lot of the games make excuses for why the main cast has to complete boring sidequests every game. Furthermore, nothing happens story-wise for a large portion of the game. Again, a good series with a lot of bloat and pacing issues.

Cold Steel 4 was one of the most disappointing games I've played in a long time. The writing was just abysmally bad. It really almost made me give up the series permanently. I'm playing Hajimari and its a little bit better so far. One of the routes is pretty good while the other two are just rehashes of old story concepts with that same "bored to tears" feel of the previous cold steel games. Doesn't look like this series can return to the greatness that the crossbell games had.
Damn I wanted to jump into this one first but nvm.
