- Despite its various issues, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4 is a very good RPG with memorable characters, fun battles, a compelling story and tons of great side content to engage with. Those who know nothing about the series are encouraged to start with the first game to get the maximum amount of enjoyment out of the story.
There is an excellent in-game encyclopedia that brings you up to speed on events thus far but experiencing them first-hand is well worth it. For fans of the series, there are definitely some bumps to manage here and there, especially when starting out. However, Trails of Cold Steel 4 is an excellent sequel overall and a fitting way to end the Erebonia saga.

The Kiseki series imo is one of the best JRPG in terms of world building.
That's like saying Nioh 2 has the best Melee combat system for this generation of games. No shit🤦 Try to say something new since this has been stated since Cold steel 1 and sky.

@@ej081994 lol. Anyways suikoden 1 not even that good lol took 2 years to make and another 3 for a total of 2 games and 4 on the third. On a triple a budget with Koonami🤦🤡. Falcom produced on a double a budget Trails in the Sky Masterpiece Trilogy, Crossbell games which are 2 and Cold Steel Masterclass.9 games in 14 years.
Trails requires way more reading though and some people do not have the attention span to play trails especially suikoden players.
I spoke to someone about Suikoden and he said Trails was garbage when he didn't even play it and it was based off someone else's opinion who Definitely didn't even play CS 2.
That's the complaint from these guys is the reading.
9 Games it took to finish Only ....ONLY the western part of the Continent btw. Now the next series will focus on the EAST....Suikoden pales in comparison.
I feel like they could have done a much better job with the characters. Like, in Trails in the Sky and the Crossbell series there was great character development, relationships, etc. And a lot of that went out the window in the Cold Steel series, largely because it became like a 'dating simulator' where you can hook Rean up with anyone you choose, and it having no lasting impact. Because of this, class 7 couldn't really develop their own relationships outside of typical bonded warrior-siblings.
Like, I feel that if you could do the same with Estelle Trails in the Sky, not only would we have been deprived of Estelle/Joshua/Renne, but also things like Agate/Tita (less romantic more personal sibling) relationship wouldn't have been able to happen either. Or Olivier/Schera. Like, are you telling me that the entire cast of Class 7 wouldn't have started dating each other / getting feelings for each other ASIDE FROM Rean by the time Cold Steel 4 hits? It just hurts me. So much more character depth could've been added but they sacrificed it for a minor payoff with the whole 'choose yer waifu' aspect.
The closest thing to a real relationship was Jusis/Altina and Millium. Which is kinda sad, considering the cast size of this game vs the previous titles.
i just started playing part 1, about 20-30 hours in, and this sounds a bit disappointing. as i'm getting further into the first game it felt as though the character development would be just as good as sky and crossbell.
As someone who has only played the Cold Steel games, how does the other Trails games compare?
While I stuck with it, I found Cold Steel very trite and repetitive for the most part. Characters where predicable, things didn't feel like they lasted, and the whole thing just felt like going through the motions with each game basically having identical plot structure one entry to the next.

Ya know, it was tough. I had read some reviews beforehand, most of which were QUITE positive, but one in particular that made me worried (Not because i believed in it, but because they were quite downtrodden about the whole game). That review was from RPGSite, i believe. After playing through most of the game, i can safely say that IMHO, this has been my favorite in the series, bar none. Sure, there are some flaws and typos, but honestly? The harsh line they used in their review of calling cold steel a mistake just doesn't resonate with me. I love the members of Class VII, both new and old. I love Rean, even if he isn't another estelle or loyd (I LOVE Estelle, but to me she's just like any positive protagonist, just with more loveable character traits!).
This game earned a subjective 10/10 from me. Would i give it that high of a score if i was being absolutely unbiased? No. I imagine for anyone who isn't as invested, it would be as low as a 7 because of all the prior knowledge you need. But that's the thing. This game was created for those of us who stuck through the story all this time. Yes, it's tough to do so without the Crossbell duology. But with so much of the story still available to us westerners, and the hopes that one day they will bring those games over to the west, this game was a masterpiece to me :).

Hi, fellow critposter.I can agree with you even before playing Cold Steel 4. As someone who played the whole series in order, seeing 2d worlds like crossbell turn into 3d is a different experience. Cold steel is more for the fans,not for people who aren't invested into the series
Well, to give a different opinion as someone who is also invested in the series and has spent hundreds of hours in all 9 games, I agreed with everything RPGSite said in that review. Its exactly BECAUSE I'm invested, that my disappointment with the writing in CS4 is so high. Not only do I think the curse was a terrible plot device that dragged down the story in CS4, but it even retroactively ruined important events and build-up from previous games. Add to that the myriad of smaller issues, and that 5/10 becomes extremely accurate.
@@rouanh6404 The curse was needed to facilitate the narrative involvement of the two Sept-Terrions. I realize that many fans wanted more focus on the political aspects of the story, but that wasn't the MO of the game. They're NEVER the MO of ANY Trails game. The politics are simply an envoy for establishing the Sept-Terrions. That has always been the formula since Trails in the Sky FC.
Here's the point. If not the curse, they would have needed to write something high on the super natural scale to facilitate the two Sept-Terrions. Under no circumstance would the sociopolitical conflict be nearly enough to achieve this end. And I don't see how the curse ruined the events of past games, because prior to the curse, Oroboros was working toward those events. NEEDED them to happen. No matter which way you look at it, external forces were at play with or without the curse. I remember this stuff, so I know.
Thanks for reviewing this! I hope it brings more light to this epic series that I feel every gamer needs to at least TRY :) I'm so excited for my CE to arrive.

@@realitybendergaming685 I would say no. At minimum play Cold Steel I - III first. Ideally, play Sky plus Cold Steel, since playing Ao and Zero is a big ask.

@@realitybendergaming685 No problem dude! If you're able to track down a way to play the Crossbell games in English it's advisable. But honestly you're good just starting with Cold Steel 1. I hope you love the series as much as I do. Because for me, this series was life changing.

I know this is a very story heavy game, but ignoring the story for a second is the gameplay on its own worth it?
Only if you get the PC versions. The difficulty mods are essential if you like to optimize your builds. One fight in CS3 against a legendary knight was trivial for me even on nightmare difficulty. With the mod (easy to find with a google search), the same fight took me 35 minutes to win (not including my 3 losses). The Sky and Crossbell arcs don't need mods as they are well balanced and very difficult on hard/nightmare. There are mods for every Cold Steel game. Mods exist for the Sky/Crossbell games if you're a masochist.
I just purchased this Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4. It is my first ever Trails game. I am loving it so far but I find the story confusing and the combat even more confusing. I'm still rather new to Japanese rpgs though. I just fell in love with them a couple years ago when I played Dragon Quest 11 and then Yakuza Like a Dragon and then Final Fantasy 7 Remake. As a person who mostly plays open world action RPGs like Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 4, and The Witcher 3 I am amazed that all of a sudden I fell in love with Japanese RPGs whether turn-based or real time. I have not been able to focus on this game as much as I would like to because I just purchased it three weeks ago for my Switch OLED but I also purchased Pokemon Legends Arceus, Bravely Default 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Shin Megami Tensi 3 Remastered at the same time and I mostly have only been playing Pokemon Arceus Legends and Bravely Default 2. Plus I'm still trying to finish Scarlet Nexus, Tales of Arise, Octopath Traveler, and Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Remastered on GameP on my Series X and a crapload of jrpgs on my PS Plus Extra subscription on my PS5. I am really enjoying all these different jrpgs, but I have not been able to totally devote as much time to any of them as I would like because I am playing so many at one time and most of them are super long.

Story is confusing because you jumped right at the end game. Its like jumping into Game of Thrones 6 when you should've started from the beginning. Minimum... atleast start with Trails of Cold Steel 1 and progress all the way to Cold Steel 4. Recommended... Start from the beginning at Trails in the Skies 1-3 > Trails from Zero > Trails to Azure > Cold Steel 1-4
Definitely should have started at least with cold steel 1
Too really feel the impact of certain cameos, stories, elements, systems and characters you really need to go all the way back to Trails in the Sky and then Trails Zero/Azure, and then Cold Steel I-IV
To me on normal was challenging and heads up to anyone going to play this the enemy have adavtange in attack and attack your parties and more times and give debuff you a lot more to anyone who beat this on nightmare on your first playthrough you must be really good to do it
I know this is old, but for anyone reading this the trick is to aggro the enemies, let them chase you until they stop moving, and then when they turn to walk back use your field attack to hit them in the back to stun them, and then you run into them to start the fight. That gives you triple advantage which basically lets you take three turns before the enemies can act, in most cases.

@@ryugaroxas In terms of content and especially story and world building, trust me, there is no equal, it is far better than the shitty ffxv that had to release dlcs to explain itself and even then it was just a poor game. It wasnt versus 13 which imo was better. I am a final fantasy fan btw and I loved ffxv the first time, but wasnt worth 60 bucks, this is. There are 8 games previously released in the trails series and each one of them is a masterpiece.

Been playing this for a while since the place I ordered from dispatched the game on the 20th and I received it the day after. Loving it so far
I really enjoyed the other 3 only thing I didn’t like was the card game for 3
I really thought Vantage Masters was a big improvement from Blade, though I wouldn't hate it they had both been here

I'm with you. Now I liked vantage masters but I thought it required too much of your time and strategy for a run of the mill mini game. Blade was much easier to get into and more casual experience for building bonding points

Woof I would suggest starting with the trails in the sky series I started from Trails of cold steel but Trails of cold steel 4 and somewhat of 3 are full of past games characters and plot

I was like that as well. I can't say it was some super mega fun game, in fact, it hardly offered me any enjoyment in the gameplay itself. I personally played it for the story, and that's sort of a cliche as well (at least to someone like me who is a manga/anime fanatic). The world-building is quite interesting trough, and the characters are fun to interact with. But so just that you know each episode's ending is really spiteful. I was roaring in anger after the third episode...hopefully, the last ep has a decent closure...also make sure you can stomach the low graphical engine.

@@deusvlad2.083 Yes and no. The saves do import when starting from 1 to 2. From 2 to 3 they do not. But 3 to 4 they do. I may have worded this weirdly. But keep in mind, I've only finished the 1st one. The only reason I'm on this video is because I wanted to see if the sequels were worth my time.

@@deusvlad2.083 Yeah that's how I tend to be with games as well. I brought God of War along with Horizon Zero Dawn and Mafia but I haven't played them. However, I don't regret it. As for your second question, what mainly transfers is who you spend time with or romance.

I'd advice starting from Trails in the sky since it starts building the universe from there. If you have time and want to immerse yourself in one of the best JRPG universe of all time play the games from the start of the series(Trails in the sky). The later games have a lot of callbacks and returning characters which would be a hell lot cooler if you'd known their adventures from the beginning.

Is it only me but JRPGs UI and menu are less confusing than WRPG that use dark colors like black, silver, brown, and use font that look like a newspaper font in smaller size too...

tbh...dont get this game if you havent played 1-3, and even then...the game is SO much more rewarding if you also know about trails in the sky series, and read up on the crossbell series. the whole entire thing is interconnected, and makes certain elements of the game SUPER nostalgic and rewarding

Yeah my lips curl in cringe whenever there is some sort of story progressive dialog, and some of the scenes I just have to look away they're so cringe. JUST LET CROW DIE FFS! He wasn't a primary character in CS1, they turned him into the plot twist antagonist and rolled with it in 2, they killed him off at the end of CS2, they revived him in CS3 because they ran out of ideas, they make him good again in CS4, but instead of giving him a meaningful 2nd death they revive him again with the power of friendship?! TOCS is some real beta-male gaming, I had to stop.

honestly that sounds like a bad idea its hard enough approaching the game with only playing the cold steel arc of the trails games the game istelf relies heavily on you playing most if not all of the previous trails games.
@@wyldhorn2277 definitly agree. It's a huge investment and has sometimes slow pace but it is really worth it down the road. Kiseki games will be day one buys from now on and currently trying to play hajimari because I can't wait :D

I enjoy both series, but there's no comparing the polish of final fantasy. What final fantasy has accomplished is crazy. But I do understand the appeal of rooting for the underdog.

That would be like starting LOTR with Return of the King, or starting the Marvel movies with Endgame. Starting with "Trails of Cold Steel" is essential. If you're not going to play through the Trails in the Sky or Crossbell games, I would recommend at least watching a summary of those.
Yes, you wont be able to catch what is happening. This happen to me when i played series 3
You can always watch videos overviewing the stories. If you get 3 it comes with journal things you can read that contain 1 and 2s stories then you can play 3

Hmm...The Kiseki series is always been consistent with its worldbuilding and lore until the second half of Ao no Kiseki...Those Chevalier Gundams and their worldbreaking specs simply ruin my subsequent experience of the series. Might as well call the Erebonia Arc as Gundam no Kiseki...
The series has been slowly mechanizing since sky, it's just escalated a lot with each title.
Yeah, but it took a leap too far. Like suddenly, mecha gundams own the war (both in Ao and Cold Steel). There is no buildup and no foreshadowing. It just pops up like that.

Don't remember that, necessarily but i haven't seen anything really egregious other than some silly typos. Nothing that would ruin my experience (And dear sweet god if it managed to get this delayed i would have been depressed for even longer >.

is melee still overpowered compared to arts?, only issue i had with this series is that arts are so bad compared to melee. Having a casting time that can be interrupted makes mage characters completely useless in most harder fights, not to mention the manapool that does not regenerate like cp does.
Hmm, i'm playing trails of cold steel 2 and jusis with the time arts (chrono drive, burst and break i think) is so broken, emma with the master quartz that make the arts do critical hit too, crafts like gale of rean are so good, or buff crafts, but i think a good art combo can be useful like the 2 i mentioned here
Arts are pretty strong though? You can create interesting loops using arts and do a lot of stuff. But they did bring back secret arts or hidden arts, whatever they are called, which are definitely a lot stronger than what we had in CSIII.
Arts were trash in one, situational in 2, and easy to abuse in 3. For 3, just get both bells of an element plus divine song order, and you'll be able to spam your best art of the element multiple times in a row.
That's just your set up, you can abuse arts like any other mechanic with the right one.
Arts are very strong in Cold Steel 4. Like all games, you start out with a weak selection of arts due to limited quartz, but as better quartz becomes available and master quartz and orders get improved, Arts end up greatly outstripping physical attacking, both in terms of damage and effect.
I dont know what it is about it that doesnt appeal to me. Probably the aestethics.

Ok so I’m playing the hack g.u. remaster „last recode“ (great games btw) and it’s graphics are basically on par with this. hack g.u. Is a ps2 remaster, this is a brand new game. like what excuse do they have these days to utilize graphics that aged and cheap looking? It’s not even ps3 level. It can’t be financial because I’m almost certain all those jrpgs that are brought to the west are making more than enough money for the devs
Imagine prioritizing graphics more than the game as a whole. 😳
How is it bad when the graphics and character models are literally better than Tales of Berseria. I’ve looked at gameplay of remastered Hack G.U and it ain’t even close. Falcom is admittedly a small company (only 60-ish employees) and thus have weaker graphics, but it nearly isn’t as bad as you think.
It isn't about graphics. I'm sick and tired of people prioritizing graphics to fulfill their experience with these games. You think I'm concerned about how realistic a lake in this game should be or the story that's compelling? Please, do tell. The worldbuilding, characters, and how everything comes together through multiple games is what's gotten me into this JRPG series. The last thing I'm going to worry about is how realistic the graphics will be. You'll be more focused on all the text over the pretty colors, trust me. If that's how you see the series, then it isn't for you.
This is not worth 75 bux ina gamers perspective but in anime perspective this is the way to go
I did start with game 1 and played 2 and 3. Trails of cold steel is really dumb but oddly fun as far as the story goes. But 1 felt like the extra long prologue to 2 and 3 felt like an extra long prologue to 4.
You play more for the broken loadouts and to see how far you can take them than the story or anything els
All trails do that the pay off is always in the 2nd. If you only played the steel games it is worth going back to sky and the crossbill ones, ao specifically is my favourite one in the franchise and is definitely worth it.

Companies set the date that you are allowed to release reviews when they send the copies out. For games they are confident in, this is almost always before the release date. If the embargo lifts 12 hours after release day, like Ubisoft games have chosen, you should be worried. Like Red Dead 2 and God of War being a whole week before release. Not sure how you don't know this.
I'm mad because I'm playing cold steel 3 but I'm going to miss cold Steel 4 on release because the game is so long

@@anwarshadaad1553 I believe the setting is based on Germany, where J is sometimes pronounced like Y. Yuna is also a Japanese name, so I guess they used the German spelling without taking into account the fact it would be pronounced Juna by English speakers. 😂

I even had a mini heart attack when one reviewer online said there were major translation issues, but the rest of the reviewers noted "minor ones" (The review i'm talking about gave it a 5/10 so he may have been annoyed with the anime cliche parts lol).

Please end the story with a decent ending please, or i will curse the whole series for the rest of my life. The series was ok as a game, trough had outdated shitty graphics, the ending of each episode made me roar with anger.
Still looks like a PS3 game... luckily everything else saves it.
I'm going to repeat this comment on every fucking video from this channel until this issue gets resolved. Please for the love of god, whoever you are that reads the script for these videos, ask the person who wrote it how names are pronounced. Is this a huge deal? No. But every video on this channel contains blatant mispronunciations of almost every character name, even on multiple videos concerning the same game. It's clear that the person narrating didn't play the game as all the names are said by characters in the game and you pronouncing Juna as "Joonuh" as well as every other name I've heard you mispronounce on this channel is grating on the nerves at this point; the worst example being the monster hunter world boss ranking video YEARS ago. It's not that hard, just ask the writer how stuff is pronounced before you record and upload these videos.

I am sorry but Persona 5, Dragon quest XI and FF 7 remake push the games beyond (even if for instance FF 7 remake is not that good or complete)
Must admit, I wasn't into persona 5 long & I've only played some of CS1 as well but while CS isn't as flashy, to me, I prefer its structure & presentation of the story. I've only not played it because I wanted to get the rest first since it's one big story lol

Also FF7 is a reboot not a remake. Story isn't even the same.
Falcom will be using the new engine for trails in the sky Trilogy remake(yes) and the next set of Trails games.
I'm telling you right now the Sky Remakes will make FF7 reboot look like Amateur hour.

Also I can compare Persona to TOCS, graphics have nothing to do with it, the games structure was similar

@@spiritualsoul2711 bold statement I’m one who thought that FF7 is overrated but the remake was fucking phenomenal,unless trails in the sky remake trim ALOT of the story fat and have high production value and incredible boss fights,great level design and jaw dropping environmental design then sure,otherwise I doubt it would even surpass the most generic rpg out there,I feel that the trails series is still stuck in the past I hope the remakes will add something new and not just a graphical update
Man I wish the Trails in the Sky writers would come back and write for the next trails series. Ys has gotten enough attention with 8 and Monstrum. 🤦 Ys just doesn't compare to a Trails game with all the writers being there.
Trails in the Sky is just far superior to Ys. There's Soo much potential for trails now that it's shifting to the east..and they said the east is a mess so I assume more darker themes will be touched on?
Ys is great but with the new engine it will really popularize the trails series.
not sure what you are talking about Hisayoshi Takeiri was the writer of all trails games from sky fc until hajimari this year in japan if i'm not wrong
and to say trails is superion than YS welllll i can't say you are wrong when it comes to story cause that's the focus but Ys games are easier to pick it was a reason why Ys 8 sold well guys didn't need to play any of the 8 other games unlike trails don't get me wrong i like them both.
and on the new engine topic it will help both games but better graphics and smoother animations help Ys titles more than trails cause Ys doesn't focus on story smooth gameplay and better graphics will help sell the game while trails will benifit from it still the story is why you will play those games for (and the npc dialogue lol)
@@benhamadouchewalid Fool that's not what I'm getting at. Writers for trails on the sky went on to work for the Ys SERIES. Which is why Cold steel isn't as strong as Sky Trilogy.

You can't even say the gameplay is better because Trails is Turn Based and for Turn Based the gameplay is good. Ys isn't and I would say it's very casual in comparison.
Also in terms of sales...Ys was put on the switch. Trails came.to the switch but they started with the 3rd game which for switch players is more of a turn off.
This Next Trails series is going to popularize the series even more going foward. Also Trails in the sky is getting a remake for the Trilogy so sales aren't a problem. Sky remake is going to sell like hot cakes
So sales isn't really a valid argument even if Ys is more casualized

Ys games don't come out as often as trail with Ys 8 coming out in 2016 and Ys 9 in 2019 and the next Ys game will be propably in 2022 in that time writers do help and/or make other projects (falcom isn't a big company everyone works on everything kondo him self said it go check 2017 easy allies video ) i just can't see your point
