Yes! They really were! That was the whole goal. That was the job! And they did it SO WELL that they won awards! Did they prefer to sync? No. They wanted to sing..and they did in clubs, and here too, if you listen. But Farian didn't want their accents. And he threw them under the bus when he couldn't control them anymore.

You don't realize the depth of the ridicule they received at the time. It came from everywhere and everyone. This led to isolation and eventually the belief that their whole life and existence was a farce.

i think over time, people look back at the nostalgia and care less about it. rob coudn't sing all that well, and it was apparent in the video they made of them singing in the studio.
while we are fans and don't care so much, the public wouldn't agree.

Even if they were allowed to memorize the song and sing it in their own voice after the behind the seen person sing the song, it would still have done well because it’s the complete package that made it a hit. But they were not given the opportunity to open their month and sing. This is a crime against these two boys. Maybe people have to apologize to them for blaming them alone
This was a completely unnecessary scandal. They could have just put the actual singers to do their singing in the background and let the boys perform the dancing and lip syncing. Credit the real vocals on the record, put Fab and Rob on the cover but include a small photo of the whole group on the back or something. Let all of them receive that awards. Most people would ignore the fact they didn't sing while also ignoring the rest of the group because they'd be more interested in Rob and Fab's performance and looks, there would be no secret around and Farian would still have the marketable faces he wanted. No reason for scandal.
And also, with the time Rob and Fab would improve their English and singing skills, so they could start contributing with their vocals on the following records.
@fraufuchs9555 Fab exactly has a great voice. It was a mistake,Frank not allowing him to sing. There's plenty of videos with Fab singing the Milli Vanilli song live. Perhaps if Fab was allowed to sing, Rob would still be with us. RIP 😢

Yo tenía 18 años cuando ocurrió el escándalo. Eran otros tiempos. A los que nos gustaba Milli Vanilli nos cayó mal enterarnos que no cantaban. Nos sentimos defraudados. Y culpamos a estos chicos sin piedad. Gran error el nuestro. Eran victimas de Farian. Pero era la primera vez que estallaba algo así. Por eso fue funesto que ellos dieran la cara solos. Farian se ocultó muy bien y no dió la cara. Muy hábil el alemán. Todos enfilamos hacia el dúo. En EEUU la reacción fue mucho más dura. En estos tiempos no hubiera pasado nada.

No special pyrotechnics, super complex lights, fog, elevated platforms, trapezes, or huge video screens with weird images behind them..nothing. Just them and a few spotlights...and the audience is in a frenzy.
Fab is singing thats for sure here but not sure about Rob? Maybe some parts but the chorus is playback

They practice very hard to "match" the backing vocal , you can see that here and clear
They could sing. F. Farian didnt let them and has trown them to the wolfes at the end. They got all the Blame and hate back then.
And farian and all the other Powerfull people in the back never have been held accountable.
There is a Documentary on Paramount + which tells the story of them, fair and from their point of view. Worth to watch.

Fabrice still sings and performs regularly. I have Videos of some of his performances on my Channel.
They have been used and exploited. They never deserved the hate & backlash back then.
