Honestly I feel like a lot of homophobic people, especially those who feel the need to always say homophobic shit are gay themselves. Internalised homophobia is the worst.

Sharing your experience as young african queer women is really important and needed. Coming out to religious African parents (Who majority of them are very homophobic, bc that is all they know) and trying to explain that this is okay is really difficult.
I’ve come to the conclusion to never come out to my parents because I don’t need their validation or support. Religious people can be very toxic and absolutely horrible, also I think they’d disown me lol.

Amal Hussen I'm guessing by your name your Somali? I'm a fellow Somali lesbian and similarly I don't plan on coming out but I also don't plan on marrying a guy I please my family. They'll find out one way or another but when I'm a place in my life where I'm financially and emotionally capable of getting disowned if it comes to that.
I think it's important that we don't give up out of fear.

Amal Hussen I'm glad you don't plan on pleasing your family at the expense of your own happiness. Unfortunately a lot of Somali gay and lesbians stay in the closet forever and marry the opposite sex to please their family. I know Somali gay guys and girls who are stuck living miserable heterosexual lives to please their family and community and to please "Allah". It's just so heartbreaking because if we continue generation after generation pretending to be straight every new generation will struggle and feel isolated and like they're the only gay Somalia out there.
Idk how but I truly hope more Somali LGBT folks become out proud and visible. The initial reaction will be horrible but eventually all the talk in the community will die down and everyone will learn to mind their own business.
Btw if you'd like to find a Somali LGB community you can join r/SomaliQueer on Reddit and join the discord group, there are also Twitter and Facebook Somali LGBT groups. I just don't want anyone to feel alone, know that if your family does disown you you still have fellow Somalis who will have your back and be your chosen family❤️❤️❤️
