In classic we would shit talk people at training spots until they accepted our duel got them to low health and fled the duel so they'd have extremely low health and the aggressive monsters would jump them after and kill them since in classic you could not eat in combat and then we'd take all the shit they dropped.

But the toxicity that comes from the duel arena is different (Gold sellers/farmers, account sellers, bot farmers) ie the scourge thats infected osrs since its release are much more detrimental to the games health. Jagex said "long term we're going to remove the duel arena" meaning they have no plans on removing it anytime soon. Also them announcing it is in line with UK's recent law they're trying to pass on gambling in videogames. Literally if it wasn't for that they wouldn't be removing the duelarena.

I used to sell cert in Draynor from what I remember. Main use of duel was over resources or mobs. Someone crashes your spot, you duel for it. Also the old 'free trip to lumby' as there was no home teleport and runes were hard to get, magic was not a commonly used skill, it was way too expensive.
Staking back in the day was really cool. Everyone would be staking with only about a few hours worth of GP. The thing that really killed the duel arena was odd stakers.

Was a dice host for a month'ish. Made some very questionable decisions along with a boatload of gp. In my my mind I see all that was wrong with it, yet a small part of me still cherishes the memories

I’m so glad this is gone. I got addicted at 13 and stole 3k from my dad on his credit card over a few months. I was staking on a private server called Near Reality and buying rsgp to switch to nrgp. I only stopped cause the server was shut down. I honestly never realized what I was actually doing as crazy as that sounds. Looking back it was one of the darkest times of my life. This should have happened years ago.

rat pits are cool but my hope is that they replace the duel arena with the summoning skill, but instead of RS3's summoning, what you gotta do is seal away the souls of monsters you fight into trading cards, and then can use those cards to summon those same monsters in duels against another player's monsters lets be real, everyone playing old school runescape also grew up playing old school yugioh. Let me explain this to everyone to show how this feels to me Jagex sells bonds in game for gold. This gold can be used to gamble. Repeat until rich. They had a legit way to have a constant cash flow. They took out the duel arena and it will help people instead help their pockets. This is why Jagex, to me, is ahead of Blizzard Activision.

honestly hearing that the duel arena is being removed makes me both happy and relieved. as a kid i almost fell into the gambling pit, turning 10m into 500m then losing it all in about 20 minutes, and resisted the urge to keep going and never gambled in a game again, well atleast this kind of gambling. but some people with adictive personalities struggle with leaving it. ive met alteast 5 people i was decently close with on rs that saw a staking stream and wanted to go try it out. they ended up in a downward spiral that had more than in game repercussions. ive always tried my best to convince people how toxic and shitty of a place it was not just for their in game account but their mental health/state. everyone is confident that oh that addicted gambling guy that lost 20k usd+ irl that wont be me nah no way dude just 1 chuck and im out win or lose. they became depressed afterwards, lost direction again not only in game but in real life aswell because they didnt have that money to spend eventually i lost all contact with them, some by choice, some just disappeared. i hope they are all doing ok and got help
Interesting misconception about gladiators is that most fights weren't to the death. Most of those guys were like our celebrities today plus the training and equipment were HELLA expensive for the age of antiquity. It's was kinda like the WWE.
People did still die though, they fought with real weapons, inflicted real wounds on one another and the medical care they had access to was rudimentary at best and outright harmful at worst, so the death rate was pretty high Also lot of other messed up things happened at the Colosseum, they'd pit unarmed prisoners against animals or armed gladiators/soldiers as a form of public execution, gladiators against animals (including intelligent ones like elephants) which were often tortured beforehand to make them angry... all in all it was really terrible by today's standards. Imo the comparison between Runescape duel arena and the actual Colosseum fight was really dumb, even if it was a joke

Always loved this game. For years, in between life events id log in, play hardcore for a few months, and then stop. Well, I signed up for the cellphone version about a year ago, played the hell outta it and loved it, was really good as an idle while I studied for college. Only to find myself sitting in front of the GE with a firecape and full angler on, a long LONG list of sell history, and all my bank sold off and -probably- RWT'd. For probably 50 bucks in modern exchange rates, years down the drain. At least they didnt drop my non tradables, but at least I fed a Venezuelan for a month. FML

Also the wider issue is that removing the duel arena has increased the danger of losing your bank in pvp so now its less popular that it was before. Therefore pvp is now basically dead.

If you think about it, drop based RNG and luck in Runescape and other RPGs are by definition gambling as well, and are deliberately and ruthlessly exploited by programmers to create addictive games. How many times i stayed up way later than i should have hoping for a whip from Abbys as a kid is beyond comprehension.

That's true, but I think the reason it's not as much of a problem is that not only are the time sinks to get to that point with higher end drops are high, but the steaks arent that big in comparison to the duel arena. When was the last time someone genuinely risked over a bil in the normal bossing systems? For most of the drops, the only cost is time, whereas people were genuinely putting their real money into it, which is where the gambling part comes in. Plus, the fact that it's the type of gambling where you can literally go from rags to riches back to rags in the matter of like 30 minutes is a big reason as to why it's so addictive for a lot of people. You feel the impact more so when it takes a lot longer to get to the point of what could be considered a loss in comparison to the duel arena

Best thing that ever happened to me in my RS life was losing almost $750 from staking. What was really sad/scary whatever you want to call it, was when I lost almost $250 in one stake, and the guy who won just moved on like it had never having. It was a life-altering amount of GP for my account, and the guy who won never even turned off his macro and was in another stake less than 10 seconds later. It was like wow, this was a huge amount of money to be playing with in an online game for kids, and it didn't even make that guy break stride. It just stuck with me.

Sands once got me my first 200m i started with 3m so i can say i was happy cause 3m took me a few months to make of hard grinding thus it secured me never having to pay for membs cause i dumped it in bonds (sold some made some stonks) and used the rest then skilled the shit out of Smith till99 now i literally never worry about losing membs cause if i do its like 5ish hours of doing rune pbodies qnd then alch and wham im back. Then i just keep making air bstaffs and alch those for like idk 18hours and im good to go

I have an awesome idea for PVP which could be used in the replacement of the duel arena and revitalize the pvp scene. My idea is to have a 4v4 small team game mode similar to COD team tactical, which you can play game modes such as headquarters, capture the flag, hardpoint to name a few. When you enter the specific team portal you are auto setup with stats supplies and gear similar to LMS but what makes this game mode different is there will be different account builds, attackers, and defenders, and a tank. There will be two max pures, one max zerker, one tank with mediocre 75 based stats thus wearing the preload out tank armor. What is also unique is the preset accounts are limited to two attack styles for instance, Account 1- Max pure attack styles (Mage and Range) Account 2- Max pure attack styles (Range and Melee) Account 3- Max 60 attack zerker (Mage and Melee) Account 4- Tank, is only limited to one style and i think that should be melee so its not a rag bolting account They can manipulate the stats to make all accounts have 99hp 99prayer but should be restricted to 75/99/1/99/99/99 Pure 60/99/45/99/99/99 Zerker 75/75/75/99/99/75/75 Tank With a preloaded setup you can have the option to pick from one of three items as a plus 1 (STOD, ACB with upgraded bolts, AGS) I believe this is something that could not only revive the pvp scene but introduce new players in a user friendly game mode that is not dominated by veteran skill players, or over run with bots. The perfect implement for this to come into the game should be the duel arena since it has been a new topic of removal, i really think this idea of mine has potential and i am not looking for credit, or clout i really hope more people see this and this can be introduced to the game. I have a good idea to replace the duel arena: allow players to challenge PVP machine learning bots to practice PKing before joining the community. They could have different levels of difficulty and different types (pures, mains, etc)
Just put caps on how much you can stake and bring back item staking, rework the arena so it's not so easy for scammers give a option for whip only staking and have a moderator there 24/7 in the main staking world to stop scammers it's such a huge part of runescape I can't imagine it not being there

honestly hearing that the duel arena is being removed makes me both happy and relieved. as a kid i almost fell into the gambling pit, turning 10m into 500m then losing it all in about 20 minutes, and resisted the urge to keep going and never gambled in a game again, well atleast this kind of gambling. but some people with adictive personalities struggle with leaving it. ive met alteast 5 people i was decently close with on rs that saw a staking stream and wanted to go try it out. they ended up in a downward spiral that had more than in game repercussions. ive always tried my best to convince people how toxic and shitty of a place it was not just for their in game account but their mental health/state. everyone is confident that oh that addicted gambling guy that lost 20k usd+ irl that wont be me nah no way dude just 1 chuck and im out win or lose. they became depressed afterwards, lost direction again not only in game but in real life aswell because they didnt have that money to spend eventually i lost all contact with them, some by choice, some just disappeared. i hope they are all doing ok and got help

Interesting misconception about gladiators is that most fights weren't to the death. Most of those guys were like our celebrities today plus the training and equipment were HELLA expensive for the age of antiquity. It's was kinda like the WWE.

People did still die though, they fought with real weapons, inflicted real wounds on one another and the medical care they had access to was rudimentary at best and outright harmful at worst, so the death rate was pretty high
Also lot of other messed up things happened at the Colosseum, they'd pit unarmed prisoners against animals or armed gladiators/soldiers as a form of public execution, gladiators against animals (including intelligent ones like elephants) which were often tortured beforehand to make them angry... all in all it was really terrible by today's standards. Imo the comparison between Runescape duel arena and the actual Colosseum fight was really dumb, even if it was a joke

Gladiators we're athletes and celebrities that garnered favor from the masses their "fights" were more like staged exhibitions hence my comparison to WWE.

In the video he didn't specify he meant gladiator fights but Colosseum fights in general, that's why I mentioned the other fights as well
Always loved this game. For years, in between life events id log in, play hardcore for a few months, and then stop. Well, I signed up for the cellphone version about a year ago, played the hell outta it and loved it, was really good as an idle while I studied for college. Only to find myself sitting in front of the GE with a firecape and full angler on, a long LONG list of sell history, and all my bank sold off and -probably- RWT'd. For probably 50 bucks in modern exchange rates, years down the drain. At least they didnt drop my non tradables, but at least I fed a Venezuelan for a month. FML

Okay so i totally agree that such blatant gambling doesn't belong in any video game. But the issue i have is, the content they've replaced the duel arena with is absolute garbage.
Also the wider issue is that removing the duel arena has increased the danger of losing your bank in pvp so now its less popular that it was before. Therefore pvp is now basically dead.
Used to be fun at the start just to use new released weapons there. I remember using the barrelchest anchor when it released. But yeah the staking I just never got in to. My mates did...

If you think about it, drop based RNG and luck in Runescape and other RPGs are by definition gambling as well, and are deliberately and ruthlessly exploited by programmers to create addictive games. That's true, but I think the reason it's not as much of a problem is that not only are the time sinks to get to that point with higher end drops are high, but the steaks arent that big in comparison to the duel arena. When was the last time someone genuinely risked over a bil in the normal bossing systems? For most of the drops, the only cost is time, whereas people were genuinely putting their real money into it, which is where the gambling part comes in.
Plus, the fact that it's the type of gambling where you can literally go from rags to riches back to rags in the matter of like 30 minutes is a big reason as to why it's so addictive for a lot of people. You feel the impact more so when it takes a lot longer to get to the point of what could be considered a loss in comparison to the duel arena
The only difference is you're gambling your time instead of money.

Best thing that ever happened to me in my RS life was losing almost $750 from staking. What was really sad/scary whatever you want to call it, was when I lost almost $250 in one stake, and the guy who won just moved on like it had never having. It was a life-altering amount of GP for my account, and the guy who won never even turned off his macro and was in another stake less than 10 seconds later. It was like wow, this was a huge amount of money to be playing with in an online game for kids, and it didn't even make that guy break stride. It just stuck with me.

I'm not a huge dual arena person or a gambler IRL. Once in a blue moon but man some people forget this is a video game and if the video game has real world implications beyond the ones of just playing it in general that's totally on you to be there in the first place. I'm not a advocator of the DA, but I do think the impact it has had on the game is blown out of proportion. I think the impact it has made on 99% of peoples lives who play this game is out of proportion. I will miss the Dual Areana for the nostalgia and having the option in the game to stake even if I hardly ever do it I think is quite fun

Sands once got me my first 200m i started with 3m so i can say i was happy cause 3m took me a few months to make of hard grinding thus it secured me never having to pay for membs cause i dumped it in bonds (sold some made some stonks) and used the rest then skilled the shit out of Smith till99 now i literally never worry about losing membs cause if i do its like 5ish hours of doing rune pbodies qnd then alch and wham im back. Then i just keep making air bstaffs and alch those for like idk 18hours and im good to go

It really is a Gambling addiction, a few years ago i experienced my first stake when i was 13, and only until recently I've stopped, luckily i didnt buy gold but it really messed with me mentally and my emotions
I know, I legitimately learned I have somewhat of an addictive personality through runescape dice games and staking. I never spent real money on staking thankfully. I have liquidated my bank before though, and it does not feel good to throw all that time building away.
I have an awesome idea for PVP which could be used in the replacement of the duel arena and revitalize the pvp scene. My idea is to have a 4v4 small team game mode similar to COD team tactical, which you can play game modes such as headquarters, capture the flag, hardpoint to name a few. When you enter the specific team portal you are auto setup with stats supplies and gear similar to LMS but what makes this game mode different is there will be different account builds, attackers, and defenders, and a tank. There will be two max pures, one max zerker, one tank with mediocre 75 based stats thus wearing the preload out tank armor. What is also unique is the preset accounts are limited to two attack styles
for instance,
Account 1- Max pure attack styles (Mage and Range)
Account 2- Max pure attack styles (Range and Melee)
Account 3- Max 60 attack zerker (Mage and Melee)
Account 4- Tank, is only limited to one style and i think that should be melee so its not a rag bolting account
They can manipulate the stats to make all accounts have 99hp 99prayer but should be restricted to
75/99/1/99/99/99 Pure
60/99/45/99/99/99 Zerker
75/75/75/99/99/75/75 Tank
With a preloaded setup you can have the option to pick from one of three items as a plus 1
(STOD, ACB with upgraded bolts, AGS)
I believe this is something that could not only revive the pvp scene but introduce new players in a user friendly game mode that is not dominated by veteran skill players, or over run with bots.
The perfect implement for this to come into the game should be the duel arena since it has been a new topic of removal, i really think this idea of mine has potential and i am not looking for credit, or clout i really hope more people see this and this can be introduced to the game.

I have a good idea to replace the duel arena: allow players to challenge PVP machine learning bots to practice PKing before joining the community. They could have different levels of difficulty and different types (pures, mains, etc)

Just put caps on how much you can stake and bring back item staking, rework the arena so it's not so easy for scammers give a option for whip only staking and have a moderator there 24/7 in the main staking world to stop scammers it's such a huge part of runescape I can't imagine it not being there
