Trinbagonian Dhal is basically a split pea soup, spiced with hot peppers and roasted ground geera (cumin). “Dal” in India is a term used for legumes (lentils, peas, beans)-Wiki In Trinidad and Tobago, our Indian ancestors made dhal with split peas because it was easily accessible and cheap. This recipe is VEGAN/VEGETARIAN & GLUTEN-FREE. It can be poured over rice, eaten as a soup or dipped with bread, roti or dumplings. My favorite way to enjoy dhal is to drink it straight out of an enamel cup! My Ajee (paternal grandmother) used to make dhal dumpling soup & dhal and roti whenever she had leftovers. She would break the roti (usually sada roti) into small bite-sized pieces and add it to warm dhal, and let it sit and get soggy- this was my dad’s favorite dish when his mom was alive. Today, my grandma- MA (maternal grandmother), will show us her way of making dhal. My sister and I think Ma makes the BEST DHAL we’ve ever tasted! This is so serious, that my sister begged Ma to always have dhal in her freezer so that when she leaves this world, we’ll still have her dhal to enjoy. I decided to document her recipe so that my sister, my little nephew and I could make dhal just like her! Enjoy! With love and a dash of geera, Reshmi & Ma
Hi. I would like to know how to make bus up shut roti. (Paratha) and other dishes. Im in Toronto, Canada but when i come to Trinidad to visit id like to meet you and learn from you and you mom in making these delicious recipes and dishes. I look forward in hearing from you. Cheers, Michele
Looks amazing! I'd like to encourage you to continue documenting the cooking ways of the previous generations. Many of the newer generation (of Trini roots) seem to focus more on pizza, pasta etc. By the time they show interest in the meals of the generations before them, their beloved 'Ma' may unfortunately not be here to demonstrate. Videos such as this will help to bridge that gap and I strongly encourage you to continue in your quest to document these priceless recipe's. Keep the videos coming, especially of the previous generation doing their thing in the kitchen! ✌️
So true! My grandmother taught me to make bake, collaloo and roti when I was 10 years old but sadly I don't remember exactly how she did it, and now even my great aunts are too old to show me 😔 I do have her recipe for black cake so at least that's one thing!
I do appreciate all the lovely dishes and the cooking information that is provided and protecting the legacy of parents and grandparents but I do think it is a bit offensive to focus on just Italian food because my mother is Caucasian Trinidadian and my father is Italian so I know the best of both worlds
@@sunshinelady281 the focus is not on Italian foods at all (one of my favs BTW) but rather to demonstrate the lack of options available today, from the Trini roots stemming from many generations ago.
Thank you very much for incorporating your Grandma. My wife love your Grandma’s method of cooking dhal. Tried the recipe today. The family gave it a 100% !
I will never forget the first time I had chunkay dhal. My dad made it for me. I was in the kitchen with him so I was curious as to why he was balancing the spoon on the open fire. He told me to take a spoon and taste the split peas. I did. When he finished adding the general seeds, gaic and hot pepper in the sizzling hot oil into the peas. He said now taste the dhal. 🤣 If you dont chunkay the dhal you eating split peas. 🤣 Most memorable moment of my dad and I and the kitchen.
I am from curaçao living in the states but my family is from guyana and i have been looking for a while now for a recipe like this to cook for my own family now. Thank you for these videos..
Thanks Ma , your method with the ladle was of great interest to me ,i could just imagine the flavour infused an will be trying that next time i try to make dalh lol ,i'm not so good at making East Indian dishes even if its one of my favourite so watching the older folks demonstrate their skills is very much appreciated.
The last time I had Dahl like this was when I was a techer in Cedros and it was amazing. So I know yah Ma's dhal is good. I never quite got the parching right but know i see how its done so i will do it like this from now on. Thanks Ma.
I've been trying to replicate the taste of my mother's dhal since she passed away in 2011, but I can't quite get it right yet. I'm so sorry I didn't pay more attention to her recipes. This one looks similar to her's, so I'm going to try it. Keep on gathering and documenting your Ma's recipes, don't make my mistake. UPDATE! - I used this recipe today to make lunch, and I'm happy to report, it came the closest in taste to my mom's dhal. I think the only ingredient missing now to make it exactly like her's, is the love she used to prepare it with 😥.
Thanks Ma that was an good idea to parched the geera before adding the oil it brings out more flavor as you said cant wait to try your method .I also like the idea of soaking the dhal for 30 minutes before boiling but i would also recommend adding some thyme and garlic in the soaking water before boiling great job
Hi reshmi girl I remember growing up my mother used to make dhal the same way and I make it just like same way we remember our mother cooking and does it now reshmi i wish you and your mother all the happiness in the world cherish your mother and all the best for the future bye.

I can’t wait to try Ma’s dhal. It looks flavorful and lick your plate good just like my grandmother use to make it. Thank you so much for sharing this with us 💖
Hi Reshmi... Ma's dhal sure looks delightful girl... I could just imagine the aromas in the air... now that's exactly how I like my dhal except my own doesn't come out quite like hers... I do mine in the pressure pot and it comes out very smooth...it tastes good but nothing beats the real traditional dhal... I miss my granny' s sweet hand so much... I guess I didn't quite get it when she was sharing her cooking tips 🙄
That dhall made me feel to eat it with white rice AND bhagi and some bird peppers i make dhall almost the same way but i put geera and garlic alone to chunkay love from felicity
Hiii Reshmi I just wanted u to know I tried your grandma's dhal recipe and it was soooo good 😋 we literally ate the dhal like soup until it finished lol😄
Oohh this looks delicious, I learned something, never realized why my geera was not getting darkish, now I know to roast it b4 then add the oil etc, thanks
Wow I've been doing it wrong the whole time...I'm guyanese and learned how to make it from my mom...but I've chunkied my dhall this way and its amazing way more flavor!! Even my mom agrees..thanks!
Enjoyed your vidio on cooking dall. split peas soup the trini way.i was borned in Guyana but lives in Toronto. Guess guyanese made it the same way.Did you chop up tomato when frying the gera and garlic?you are a pretty cook(lol)
I make dhal almost the same except for the onions , and i never chunkay the geera with the garlic like that.... i will give this a try, curious to see how the flavor differ and if i would like it doing it this way instead on my way.... thanks for sharing.
Good night Buenas tardes Bon nuit.Yes I do parch my geera grains before adding oil to the laddle.I then add crush garlic cloves before putting into pot. When dhal is cooking you put your pimentos or hot peppers and shadow beni if preferred .You do not fry your peppers.
