Matthew is the best, he makes cooking appear so simple....he is my go to guy when looking to make a Guyanese dish. Thank you Matthew, for all the help over the years.
I love to see Guyanese showcasing our cuisine. Keep up the great job. I love to learn different methods. Ignore the small minded/close minded negative people.
You cook like a old soul straight from Guyana cooking I love don’t see a Lot of Guyanese cooking the way the old school Guyanese cooking this really nice to see thank you !!
Lol I totally agree my friends tell me I take too long to cook and I do crazy things like hand peel my potatoes and make sure there’s no little black stuff inside it and I wash everything like my onion and garlic lol apparently that’s crazy but whatever they can’t stop eating or getting enough of my Guyanese food hmmm I wonder why and yes my grandma , mom, grandpa and myself make our dhal the same way but I must say I never try the Green dhal I will definitely will be trying this out next thank you again !
deepa pitamber-zack lol yep it's all the small steps that make the food taste good. And the green dhal doesnt add a different taste that's just the way my mom buys it. But you can use just yellow.
Great points in the beginning about the "put downs" within the community. WHYYY. As a kid going to my cousins or friends houses was great BECAUSE of these differences in recipes. I would always look forward to "aunty jackies dhal" or "aunty leetas curry". I think its ignorant that people could think theres only one way to do things. Btw the foam when boiling lentils or legumes is denatured proteins floating to the top! My grandma used to say "dont turn in di scum, must scrape it out" LOL.
I've been trying to make dhal for years and it never came out right. My one grandmother lives in FL and has dementia so her trying to give me the directions step by step has been difficult for her. My other grandmother can't give directions over the phone. She lives in NY & is more of a 'hands on' person. Getting directions from her stressed her out a bit. But let me say, I just made it & it came out PERFECT. Thanks to you & Alica. I've been following her blog for years, trying one recipe at a time and I finally got the courage to try this again with help from your video. More collabs please!
Well said Matthew I love Alicia Pepperpot blog also your recipes and I respect everyone methods of cooking because we might be in places or countries where we don`t find all the ingredients.
I started cooking after finding Alicia! And I heard her talking about Matthew Matthew Matthew but I never checked you out til u taught me to make tamarind sour the other day! As a young Guyanese living in America who didn’t really pay attention to my grandma cooking back in the way, the two of you are amazing! You’re teaching and passing down a culture and im so grateful.
Thank you for all of these recipes. I've tried them and they've come out perfect. Ignore the negative comments. Those who post negativity should have their own show if they feel they can do better.
Mathew first off DON'T listen to people with the negative comments, we all cook differently because we have different tastes, as you can see from my name I am a true Guyanese very mixed and as such I have three different ways I make my dhall. But I truly enjoy your style of cooking and I also learned a few great tips from you 🙏💕🇬🇾
I love dhal, I will try the green peas mixture, it looks good. Just a little info, poi is also called Malabar spinach, you can find it in the Chinese grocery stores. Tkx for the recipe looking forward to more. Have a great weekend.
Great recipe Matthew. I never add poi in mine but I will give it a shot next time I cook dhal. And I agree with your statement. No two recpies are alike. everyone has their own take on how to make it. So you just keep doing you and inspiring people who want to learn to cook.
I love this video! Kudos to you for not only sharing your recipe, but for also the respectful manner in which you stated that each cook may put their own twist on how they cook dishes that we all grew up eating and love like dahl. 😋🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾
That's exactly how I make mine! I'm so happy to see someone else does it the same. Awhile back I stumbled upon Alicia's website and I totally agree about getting hungry instantly or cravings rather..she's really good ...am waiting for her mom's version of duck curry lol. Just like our foods have different variations so does people....we all come from different household with different personalities and some of us could be really mean and difficult. So, just ignore the negative comments and continue your great work. You're giving us especially the young our culture in foods which always brings people and families together and that's more than enough. Thank you for putting the time and effort. God bless you and your family especially Grandma. You're lucky to have her around and enjoy her food💖💖
Hi Matt, I must say, for a young person you do things the longtime way as the older generation did. As we would say, the old school way. Very rear you would see young people cooking the longtime way. Keep the tradition alive matt.
I love dhal with chickpeas curry eat it with my hand. Enjoy the old school way of cooking. You know people will always have negative things to say about others just don't let it get to you. You're doing a great job sharing your channel with the world. Nuff love
Yes Matthew dhal is very nutrious. I make this once every two weeks with spinach, or okra, or fry potatoes, or curry chicken. Of how delicious. Sometimes I put some okra in the dual. Eat with basmati rice. Yum yum
Your Dahl looks very yummy I am also a Guyanese living in Holland. After years living here I love to try different types of meals from Guyana.Love you guys.Anna👍
You made this with such ease, and it looks delicious! Your method is a little different from how I’ve grown up watching my mom. I have never had Poi in Dahl, have to do some searching here in Fort Lauderdale. Thank you for sharing your video.
