- Kyo Kusanagi is the the main protagonist and most recognizable character in the KOF series. He is the heir of the Kusanagi family, one of the three clans that defeated Orochi 1800 years ago.
Although cocky and arrogant, Kyo is kind hearted and well meaning. He possess one of the three sacred treasures : the sword of Kusanagi and despises the heir of the Yagami clan; Iori.
This video also tells the story of Kyo's clones : Kyo 1, Kyo 2 and Kusanagi.

Eh.... High School is over-rated IMHO; Could and Should be used as an interest hub the student can take but the reality is the social aspect in which, unfortunately, most people even in their 30's or 40's never grew out of.

Well, despite the story behind KOF, at the end KOF is more like a spin-off, a big crossover of SNK characters where Kyo, Iori and K are the main protagonist, some times we just forget that Terry and Ryo are tha mains protagonist of their own games, Terry can't have main protagonism in KOF, other wise it would be Fatal Fury, the same with Ryo, he can't be protagonist in KOF it would be Art of Fighting.
This just remember me we need more iterations of Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting.

You know what I like about Kyo? He's this MC who has a special bloodbline but gives no shit abt it unless his family is threatened, leads a normal life, with a love towards his motorcycle and his girlfriend & friends. Thats all nothing too edgy and complicated which makes him unique among fighting games MC's. He is a relatable character
The best part about Kyo, in my opinion, is that he’s a borderline OP character, and I meant that both character-wise and gameplay-wise. He’s not perfect as a fighter, but even so, no one is. Not even the likes of Rugal, M. Bison or Shao Kahn are.
Firstly, there’s his conversation with Akuma in SvC, where he considers Kyo to be someone of his equal as respectable fighters. It’s technically not canon, but it’s fun nonetheless to acknowledge it.
Then, in multiple conversations with other fighters in KoF XIII, he never hesitates to show off his talent and skills while keeping it well between the thin line of arrogance and pure confidence. Heck, this is the same man who, along with a rich lightning-using playboy and a gold medal Judo international champion, won a total of 5 different tournaments in the KoF timeline, so why not get a little cocky?
And one more thing worth mentioning is his fighting style. Most fighter characters simply stick to the style they trained under and tried to perfect it while learning more along the way, while Kyo is always changing and mixing his own up with his own creativity and intuitiveness. In other words, if compared to something like reading a book, Kyo is like an author, learning as he reads while writing more along the way. (kinda ironic tho that he sucks at poetry, lol)
Needless to say, he’s badass but not edgy, wicked but not insane, and confident but not overly arrogant.
Well try Ken Masters. He wins tournament to get money to ride new cars with his girlfriend. Et voilà!

Kyo is by far my favorite KOF character. I love the fact that even when he's not the MC of a particular arc, he's always one of the central character... but since the Orochi saga is what I think of when I think of KOF, I'll always see Kyo as THE MC of KOF.
Dude, I always thought that Kyo was a natural and never trained, thanks for teaching me his history with such detail. Now I've found new respect for the character.

Real quick, the Yagami was originally called the Yasakani before binding a contract with the Orochi and became the Yagami.
It honestly sucked that Kusanagi wasn't a NESTS project, honestly, his personality seemed perfect as a Kyo clone.
One of Kusanagi's super move from 2002 UM came from KOF 99 EVOLUTION from Syo Kirishima.

Nests Kyo is my childhood fighting game hero.

K' is bland and one-dimensional.
He's always edgy & doesn't move on, look I know K's been through some deep shit with the NESTS, but he wasn't alone. Kyo's been through some deep shit too, but he put it all behind. That's why Kyo is my favorite character, he's the HERO & best boy. Same as comparing Squall and Cloud, Squall moves on, Cloud does not. So yeah, Kyo & Squall over K' & Cloud anyday. K' & Cloud, (as Kyo said) pull yourselves together & get over it!

Youre talking about a kid who had an whole identity crisis , used as a puppet to nearly kill a friend and end the world. Yeah pretty sure he had alot more to deal with than K. Kyo is better than K' but Cloud and Leon ( I call Squall Leon) are equal for me.

My first exposure to Kyo and KOF in general were the arcade 2002 cabinets that were lying around my country. Ironically, the first characters I saw and remember wasn't him but Iori and Flame!Chris. I spent years wondering how to unlock the latter's flame mode when I saw the different stances while being unaware of Kyo as the main hero for many years. My cousin and I would just main Kyo and Iori by sheer coincidence, unaware that they are the main protagonists.

This has been debunked with the arrival of Nameless. Poor guy doesnt even given a name by SNK.
Nameless is just a codename. He is still a K but there is some conflict. He is planned to replace K9999 as the 9999th K clone. But Snk is thinking of giving K9999 a chance of existing so they just named him Nameless. It is also a possibility that he is K10000 or K-Man in japanese

I genuinely believe that the reason N.E.S.T fell was because they thought making an army of clones of a teenager with unfair fire power was a good idea. Seriously.
Also, considering how many times they beat him, Orochi needs to give up and wait till Kyo,Iori and Shizuru bite the dust before resurrecting.

Well you have former members of Capcom working there, so some vibes maybe similar but I like Kof style better as lots of their characters look more walkable in the streets than street fighter's.

Kyo 94 is my fav of all time.
My favorite character i really like kyo both story wise and gameplay wise even though he isn't the main protagonist anymore he is still important. I really like that too bad that they didn't do the same with Terry and Ryo but atleast they got some respect in they're own games

chachitogober indeed, it was during 96, 97 events m, but it’s more involved in the three sacred treasures and it’s mostly backgrounds, that’s how I learned of the existence of Kyo’s family and His girlfriend Yuki.

Very Good Video. My only suggestions would be, mainly for a potential future remake post Verse Arc, to briefly mention the KOF EX Games, which take place in an alternate continuity where instead of NESTS, it was Moe Habana whom found Kyo and helped him recover before the next KOF Tournament, and then there’s how in the NESTS Saga his girlfriend Yuki had almost been kidnapped by NESTS agents only to be saved by Daimon and Iori, the latter whom calls him out on this afterwards.
