EMERGENCY HAUL-OUT: Things go from bad to worse.... (Episode 258)

  • After having the deck of the bow rip clean off the hull, things go from bad to worse as we develop a very concerning knocking noise inside the Saildrive. It's so bad that we end up having to do an emergency haul out....
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

Lagoons are one of the greatest boats and one of the worst in the same package . Fantastic for space and floating off a beach or chartering at a big bang for the buck . However they were cheap production boats never intended to last and not only poorly made but also not made to be fixed .

Yanmar makes a kit for sd50 to sd60. It has a massive adapter plate. Keep in mind the sd60 is a few inches longer than sd50.
So the adapter kit does all the hard work for you. Even the bolt pattern will line up properly.
I have a lagoon 440 and just did this a few months ago. If yanmar doesn't help, reach out to yanmar service centers and they can source the right parts for you. Yanmar itself won't ship you anything. You have to go thru their distributors, who then sell to the service centers. But you can get it FAST this way.
Mine took 2 days to ship from Florida to chesapeake over a national holiday!

Thomas Crook nailed it with "Traveling around fixing your boat in amazing locations" really seems to fit - Parlay, Delos, Zatara, Nahoa, Barefoot Doctors, VA, et al. The next stage is "F#*k it, let's buy a new boat." ala, Doctors, Delos, Nahoa, Wynns, recently.
Zatara seems to follow "a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into", and he does a magnificent job of anticipating/avoiding problems, but at a substantial (and necessary) cost.
Colin, your skills and talents are amazing and you manage to not only survive but excel with your resourcefulness. Kudos and thanks for the journey you take us all on weekly.

It's a lot like deciding whether to have old vehicles or new ones, but on a bigger scale $$$ wise. Do you like zero payments but have to do regular maintenance, or do you want to make monthly payments and fight with the warranty people. I recently had all newer stuff, but am selling them to pay cash for older. My newest vehicle is a 1996, and once I get them caught up on the more costly repairs, I will start looking at paying cash for a ~23 ft boat or so.

Curved gears are called helical gears (spiral bevel gear), and usually run much quieter, than regular straight-cut style gears, and can handle more force generally. So they're usually used things like on car transmissions/gearboxes etc. They are more expensive to make.

What a bummer!!! I so hoped, as I know all of you did as well that the sail drives would swap out. I know though that in true Parlay fashion you 'll have her back going in no time . Cheers Guys ! Hang in there!!!

Duuuude! I admire your endless patience & analyzing skills. I’m learning from you to not allow myself to become overwhelmed with the curve balls that life throws at us. Keep methodically moving forward whether it’s researching or turning wrenches to work through it.
To the chosen one…. At our age, we could all use a little CLR once in a while. 👍🏻😂 Yikes!!

First thing I said to myself is that it is the lower unit... Gears and/or bearings go out and "clunk". Because of their leverage, the clunk is louder than you'd expect.

Be patient Colin. Watching you fret over a chipped tooth isnt what I watch every week to see. I watch to enjoy your thought process in diagnostics, careful prep to discover the problems, your mechanic aptitude, ingenuity to better your boat, and your re-engineered solutions. Im just a boring landlubber , dreaming of sailing, but terrified of bordom at sea. If sailing on a ship like yours is what its like, I think I will try it!

Colin - I noticed you were listening for the "tick" without using the "hose" trick - I'm guessing you know what I mean but just in case. A piece of hose (garden hose etc) held to your ear can be used like a stethoscope to isolate / locate unwanted noise. Cheers - love the channel

WOW! your knowledge and can do, have to, attitude is key. Definitely would’ve been slick if you could’ve just swapped the two out. I definitely have faith in you man, you’ll get what you need to be back under sail shortly. 👏🏻💯✊🏻
