I have both systems. But the Pentax cameras feel more like an extension of your eye. My K1 Mark II shoots amazing pictures and it always delivers on my style of using the controls.
I've had Pentax or Ricoh cameras exclusively for the last 50 years. The KP is my dream camera and probably the last I will ever own. It is, from my view, perfect.
I have this camera, and the big daddy K-1. Here's what the KP has over the K-1. 1) Av Bracketing mode. Take one shot and the camera will take 3 shots quickly at the same exposure at different apertures. Useful. 2) A far superior ES mode. Like the video shows the ES mode is really quiet (you can turn the focus confirmation beep off). I often cover public speaking events and I go one step further and use Live View with manual focus in ES mode, it is completely ninja mode. What's really neat is you can also use the ES mode in High Continuous burst mode. This goes one step further to ensuring you capture a 'flattering moment' whilst being absolutely silent! 3) ES mode goes one step more insane! You can shoot in High Continuous burst mode AND use the OVF in AF.C mode!!! You don't HAVE to use Live View if you don't want, but be aware that during the burst shot itself the OVF will go black, but still it is another highly powerful feature of ES mode that the K-1 lacks. Yes, it's a really decent camera. I have shots taken with the KP (when I am also shooting the same event with the K-1), and image quality wise I cannot tell the difference really. They are both excellent cameras.
@@unbroken1010 Same. I believe the KP and GRIII share the same sensor and IQ to being about the same. So if you can live with less dials, want more compactness and a fixed focal length then the GRIII should be a great option.
I just picked up a Pentax KP from B& H, the KP is not my first but one of five Pentax bodies that I have bought over the last ten years. I use a Pentax K5II that I use with a Sigma 120-400 mm F 4.5-5.6 for wildlife photography and at times I use this set up from a 14 foot kayak, the next two bodies are used for event photography because of the dual SD cards, the K3 and K3II, lastly I added the KP to a older Kr for travel, easy to pack due to their smaller size and the KP will be my go to body for landscape photography, the third wheel set up works great along with the tilt screen for travel and landscape shooting. Now looking forward to the new Pentax body coming next year. The lens that I paired the KP with on my vacation in Aruba was an older Sigma 17-70 F 2.8-4.5, combo worked great. Jim Mlodynia
bought a KP a few years ago, got distracted by mirrorless, now picking it up again. High iso is pretty good, looking at test images high iso is similar to good aps-c mirrorless, and might beat the k3iii at high iso. AF is good enough, just do old school center point af/ae-lock + reframe by moving the camera. When mounting the small grip it becomes almost mirrorless form factor, although a bit heavier. It's a very pleasant camera, and for those that look beyond just ticking off specification boxes, it may be Pentax' best camera.
Ideally, when the camera is in ES mode, there is no mirror lock-up sound every time the shutter button (the mirror lock-up sound is only heard when switching modes). So the ES and MS modules are completely separate but both are in one camera, we just have to choose which one best suits the shooting situation.
It's still great in 2024. It's a camera to love. Used prices went crazy in 2022, but probably can get one for a decent price now (still 600-700 euro though!).
Phenomenal images. Forget websites like dpreview who worry about detailed specs. Those cameras are great in the lab but don't produce aesthetically pleasing images that resonate with people on an emotional level. This camera does though -- perhaps the best camera for the price ever produced.
I think it's the best DSLR ever. At APS-C the digital body size is near analog full frame SLRs, and with the flat grip it's retro and a thing to hold and shoot like an old camera. The image quality is lovely, the AF is sufficient, can do old-school focus, meter and recompose like you would with analog SLRs. I'm using mirrorless for a now having the viewfinder pass natural light is excellent.
So how many people we have here using it for portraits and old manual focus glass I really love the old ko1 do you think they were using a similar sensor just for able to put higher megapixels if that's possible
Really interesting video rich with information. I wish Pentax implemented a hybrid Camera, 2 camera modes (DSLE & Mirrorless) in one body. Unlike what Pentax is now doing, it just adds a live view feature where we still hear noise as a result of the movement of the mirror module every time we take a picture. I hope the mechanical sound only occurs when we switch modes. Regards
I still use a Pentax K5ii and dropped it last week onto concrete from about 1.5m (on a wall). No harm done, as I moved away from the scene quickly so that the council/commune didn't demand repairs to the concrete. I'd been thinking about the KP for a while and the only things that put me off were perhaps a shortage of Megapixels and the Back Screen's lack of full mobility (the K-1's back screen can just about turn somersaults and you can take the weight of the whole camera by holding on to the screen, in all positions). Like most Pentax users, the K-1 has great appeal for me, but some good points in this video about the K-1 vs the KP. The K-1's obviously going to give quality - and huge - prints, but nowadays I don't have a requirement to print bigger than A3. Also, I know I co uld use the same lenses on the K-1 as I am using of the K5ii, but would eventually have to replace them with some very expensive lenses for full-frame. Gouda! I had a really good weekend the Nethelands with my daughter last year - stayed in Den Haag but got around to Haarlem, Utrecht and Delft..... and I became an addict of your wonderful Gouda cheese - I even learnt how to pronounce the word!
I like the idea of Pentax to maintain their mechanical shooting mode while increasing their live view performance to emulate mirrorless cameras, but in this part, they run very slowly. So, the lack of video performance behind their competition makes this camera seems "out of date" with a new trend where integration between still shooting and video capture in one camera is becoming increasingly popular.

Just ordered a 2nd hand KP. What attracts me is weather sealing, ibis, good high ISO and it takes Pentax lenses without need for adapter. I have A7R2 and A7S but adapting legacy glass makes cameras rather big. KP has electronic shutter and 24MP sensor. My A7S has electronic shutter but only 12MP so less room for cropping. FF advantage is you have no crop factor when using wide lenses. With KP I'm considering getting 20-40mm Pentax zoom. Gives me a nice range for street and the flare resistance is supposedly stellar. I have other cams that will shoot street just as well (XF10, RX1R, NX500, Coolpix A etc) but none offer weather sealing. Still not sure I'll keep KP but I'm paying for it by selling a Samsung NX1 that is not being used so nothing to lose and another toy to play with!
