    Pentax, with what became known as the MZ-D, got Pentaxian hopes up early in digital camera history with the prospect of a full-frame DSLR. That prospect, in the following 15 years, became more of a wish, a dream, and at best an apparition for a hope that many Pentaxians gave up on. When the K-1 reached market, the reaction to this intuitive, clever, well designed, thoroughly thought-out, and in all ways amazing camera took some time to get traction. But, the K-1 has built a well deserved reputation as a camera of staggering capabilities backed by a magnificent interface and superb images. The K-1 deserves that reputation fully.

    I've been watching your vids for a few years now even although I rarely comment they are superb, or as we Scots would say stoating. Your delivery style and sound always reminds me of the great Alistair Cooke and his letters from America. I've been using Pentax exclusively for about 40 years even back at the age of 13 I never wanted to be a sheep so went for Pentax rather than Nikon Canon etc and have never regretted it once. Just two weeks ago I used the 50mm smc-m lens that came with my first Pentax.... Pentax is just so underrated :(

      Thank you! I'm glad you left a comment on this one. I do love my Pentax bodies a lot. It helps that the K1000 was my first camera, but the ergonomics on the entire lineup are generally really great. There's just a whole lot of thought, and photographer-centric design, that goes into them,

    Nice review, David. The K-1 was the camera that I spent a lot of time waiting for when I was a Pentaxian. So I enjoyed seeing it announced and seeing your usual excellent review of it. Unfortunately for Pentax, two things happened while I was waiting so that it's not as relevant for me anymore.
    The first was that my K-5 suffered a main board failure and it took CRIS camera (Pentax's authorized service center) more than 5 months to get the parts in and get the camera repaired. That really turned me off for the brand as a whole unfortunately.
    The second reason I quit waiting was the D600 came out. Suddenly, it was possible to get a full frame sensor with similar architecture to the APS sensor that was in my K-5 for a decent price. The D600 had it's share of issues. The oily shutter problem was real and even when there wasn't oil being slung on to the sensor, it attracted more dust than any other camera I've owned (included the Pentax K100D and the original Canon 5D!). Thankfully, Nikon service was quicker at fixing my camera so I was willing to stick it out with them. I've since added a D800 to the D600.
    As much as I've settled into the Nikon system, I still find myself missing Pentax for one very specific reason. I wish that I had body based image stabilization with the big full frame sensor. Like you mentioned in the video, 36Mp images are capable of amazing detail. They also magnify technique and equipment flaws big time. Camera shake is my enemy with the D800 more than any camera I've ever owned and constantly find myself using higher ISOs than I'd like just to counter the problem when its not feasible to set up a tripod. I don't have the money to replace all of my lenses with VR options at the moment. In some cases, I couldn't even if I wanted to (my 85mm f1.4, for example). While I know that lens based stabilization is more effective, it still was nice to have body based stabilization available on all of my lenses when I shot Pentax. The Pentax SR system also allowed for some interesting bonuses, too. The pixel shift resolution mode would be a lot of fun to play with. But I'd really love to be able to use the image shift function for a small but effective bit of perspective correction. I used that function all the time with my K-5. I imagine I'd use it even more on the K-1.
    Anyways, thanks again for a great review with some very appealing imagery to illustrate what a great camera it is!

      Thank you, Chris. I can't fault you for hopping over to Nikon. They make really good cameras. The interface is pretty similar to Pentax, and the lens lineup is superb. (And having an experience with CRIS camera would be enough to put most people off photography in general; I never read a positive comment or review about them.)

    I really feel certain that the K1 is the camera I want to buy and, your video underlined that. Your still life work looked just amazing. You laid out the caveats well and put them in context of what a photographer actually does. Most standard reviews compare it with named standards as if it is addressing the same market sector and needs to be exactly comparable. I was worrying about what was replacing K3 and whether KP was the way to go and now K1 is on the horizon as the possible purchase.
    Pentax is tiny but mighty and carves its own path in careful steps and it certainly keeps image quality and ergonomics as touchstone ideals of design. The image processing engine seems to be a very good one. The user interface and the handling are both excellent.

      Thank you!
      So I have the K-3, too. If you can keep it alongside the K-1, definitely do. There are some things that the K-3 does better, specifically anything that needs a high frame rate. There may also be times that the smaller raw files or added 'lens throw' from the APS-C crop factor are helpful. As a team, the K-1 and K-3 are hard to beat.
      The K-1 is a fantastic camera. Definitely worth the purchase price.

    Great review. The flaws are admitted; they make no difference to the sorts of pictures I take. The upsides are outstanding; the amount of tidy-up work I have to do to get a passable photo taken in bad conditions in post is MUCH less than with the K-5. One thing I found it's VERY good at is digitising the B&W films I take on my other Pentax full-frame cameras. The workflow and ergonomics run a lot more smoothly than they did with the K-5, and the fact that the DA 35/2.8 macro isn't quite full-frame doesn't matter under the circumstances.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 лет назад

      Thank you!
      This is great for digitizing film. I use it for medium- and large-format negatives. I still use the K-3 for 35mm because the old Pentax bellows that I use doesn't mount on the K-1.

  • @normhead2000

    Great review, it should be mandatory for anyone considering a K-1. As a Pentax user (since 1967) I still use my K-3 much of the time, because of the mentioned weaknesses, however, for the highlighted purposes it's just one of the best out there, I wouldn't consider shooting landscape with an APS-c camera or even a camera 24 MP or less, after shooting with this camera for a year and a half. When you nail an image with these camera, it is top notch, and I din't really care what else you use. But it cn be a little harder to get the image in the first place. Essentially they've made the camera at the price it is by leaving out stuff that would be included in a higher priced camera. What they did include is enough to get you the best image quality possible at any price in a relatively low cost body.

    I have the K1 MKII and it is a truly unique camera and is a great landscape camera and when I was photographing events along with any one of my K3 bodies made for a great tandem that complements each other. I i need more reach for glass like the 77mm f1.8 limited and i could get more reach with out using the crop mode on the K1. I also swapped the 24-70 f2.8 and the Sigma 35mm f1.4 and Pentax 31mm limited. I could use the 31mm on the K1 and the Sigma 35mm f1.4 on the K3 and the 35 framed like a 50mm on the k3 the versatility of this setup.

  • @epstar83

    Great review David! Some wonderful images in their too! I love the idea of being able to shoot my film Pentax bodies with their lenses alongside the K1 (for the record I don’t own a K1, I have a full Fuji setup for digital). Additionally something worth mentioning is the very competitive price of the K1, but as you rightly point out this is a high end machine and perhaps those customers look at the price point as secondary consideration. You also make a great point about the sensor resolution being way more than what most shooters need, perhaps there is a market for two Pentax full frames in much the same way that Sony have the A7iii / A7Riii. Come on Ricoh, bring us a full frame Pentax K with 16MP? Perhaps a mirrorless FF pentax that takes K mount? Last thing, I would love t some point if you could go in to more detail about processing pixel shift files, specifically the software that works best, it doesn’t seem to be broadly supported. I think the K1 with pixel shifted scans of 35mm negatives could be incredible!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you, Michael.
      So I've tried pixel-shift scanning negatives. It makes a different with slide film only, but not black and white. And the slide film difference is pretty close to negligible, but it's there.
      My Pentax FF wish list has always included two things I doubt we'd ever see -- swappable prisms and swappable sensors. It would be good to have a landscape-oriented sensor that alters how the camera performs, and a sports or low-light sensor, a portrait sensor, etc. And if it were something that weren't meaningfully harder to install than a battery grip, that would be amazing.
      I'm not sure if Pentax has another mirrorless plan. The Q is discontinued and the K-01 mirrorless had a mixed reception (that's led to a cult following.) Nikon and Canon are likely to fight over (what I think is) a fairly small market for a full frame mirrorless. I think that an FF mirrorless will eat batteries like popcorn as the sensor plow data to either a really bright, outdoor-capable screen or a screen eyepiece. That's just going to eat up tons of power. I think most pros and other high-end users will either stick with DSLRs or return given how long a good DSLR battery will last.

    • @epstar83
      @epstar83 6 лет назад

      I feel like the FF mirrorless market may be growing. There would have to be some confidence in this or I doubt Nikon and Canon would put tons of money into it. For now I’ve had good success adapting Pentax lenses to the Fuji kit, albeit with the crop sensor.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 лет назад +1

      It could be that I'm underestimating the demand, too. Sony has done very well with their mirrorless bodies.

    • @epstar83
      @epstar83 6 лет назад +1

      Also I think a lot of these markets are “created” by the manufacturer. Sony took the risk by creating a FF mirrorless, and it has taken a long time for the two big names to get in on the act. I think if their new mirrorless bodies take the current SLR lenses then they will do extremely well since customers initially will only need to invest in a body. Though I’m sure they will also bring out lenses that take advantage of the mirrorless setup too.

      With their ultrasonic AF lenses, the brand new ones, speed is significantly better than with screw-drive lenses. If you're looking for a sports and action camera, though, this is not for you. The frame rate and buffer will not meet your expectations.

    Pentax K-1.
    When you look through the viewfinder directly at a powerful light source (mainly the Sun), you can see that are difficult to see, and even disappear (due to the internal reflections of light in the pentaprism I imagine), the green light diodes of exposure information (speed, aperture, EV, ISO, etc.)
    Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Is it possible to adjust the power of the viewfinder's light diodes? Or how?

    • @DavidHancock

      Well, don't look at the sun. That's a good way to handle your eyes permanently. I forget if this camera allows the viewfinder LCD brightness to be adjusted. If so, you can try that. And again, seriously, don't look at the sun through your camera.

      I think that the K-1 could be an amazing wedding camera. I know some wedding photographers who use the 645Z for that and the results are amazing. The K-1 should be right up there with the 645Z in terms of quality. On think yo do is make sure you use a slightly slower burst mode during things like entrances and walks. That will prevent the buffer from underruning as quickly during events like the walk down the aisle or the first kiss..

    Hi David, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the K1. I'm an "old" photographer who is resuming photography after 35 years! My last cameras were Leica M4, Nikon F2 and FM2. After the huge technological digital advance, I'm kind of lost. Can you recommend the F1 for travels and photo reportages?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 лет назад +1

      Hmm. Hard question. I love the K-1. I took it on a plane with me yesterday for a shoot tomorrow. It travels well and it built tough enough for bumps. But it's big by modern camera standards. And because it has a single-piece magnesium alloy chassis, it's heavy by modern camera standards.
      So I'd give a thought to how much weight you want to carry. If your camera allocation is 5 pounds, the K-1 is going to hit that with one big lens (like the new 50mm f/1.4, which is awesome but heavy.)
      If you want a small, light camera backed by a set of amazing lenses, I might look at a Sony Alpha 7 or 9, depending on your budget. Sony is making, I think, the best lenses (especially primes) of any of the camera makers right now. They have a strong focus on image aesthetic backed by good sharpness and color transmission. That's true, in varying degrees, of all camera makers today, but Sony has a keen focus on image details that other makers tend to ignore (for instance, the quality of the blur in out of focus areas is significant for Sony whereas other makers will produce lenses with jittery out of focus areas.)
      The downside to a Sony 7 or 9 is that it lacks an optical viewfinder and has a digital screen instead. So they're pretty power hungry for their size. But, shaving a pound or so off the camera's weight and about half the thickness off the body leaves a lot of room for a few extra batteries.
      And having used a Leica, you might find the Sony's size to be familiar.
      You're not going to go wrong with the K-1 from an image standpoint, and the same is true of any major maker's flagship cameras. So were it me, I'd detail the types of travel I'd be using, the space and weight that I want to use and carry, and then engineer a system from there. And if space and weight are no issue, the build quality on the K-1 is the best I've ever come across in a camera, so it will take whatever abuse your travels throw at it.

      @@DavidHancock Hi David, Happy New Year!
      Thank you for taking the time to respond to my query.
      First off, weight is not an issue for me so long as it also translates to robustness. I like strong rugged cameras. Another feature that I would also like to include in a new modern camera is the “full frame” capability. Do you agree? Also, I see most of modern professional photographers use Canon and Nikon (with full frame capabilities). As an old “Nikonist” I initially began to look for Nikon’s modern cameras, but then I soon realized that the old “all mechanical” cameras I was familiar with, have nothing to do with the new ones. Then I saw the Pentax K1 and kind of began to be intrigued by its design and robustness, and, perhaps because I have a natural tendency to do things differently than most people do, I began to consider it pretty seriously. However, watching several reviews on RUclips, it looks like Canon and Nikon seem to be a good step ahed of Pentax in many technical aspects. For one thing, Canon and Nikon have by far several full frame cameras whereas the K1 is Pentax first full frame camera. I wonder whether the K1 is as reliable as the other ones. Also, both Nikon and Canon have a huge selection of lenses whereas Pentax seems to be pretty limited in that particular aspect. (That said, my most typical set up would include one 35 mm and one 80 or 90mm.). I was very curious to hear your opinion.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 лет назад +1

      So given those points, you'll probably love the K-1. It's incredibly reliable. I just took it from Denver to SF to shoot a wedding. I took it, the brand-new 50mm f/1.4, the 31mm FA Limited, the 77mm FA Limited, and the AF540FGZII flash plus accessories and it all fit in a small camera bag. As it always does, it performed without issue or drama. The K-1 is definitely the best camera I've ever owned. Pick out whichever camera has the best interface for you. If that's the K-1, you'll be happy with it. The pixel-shift and in-camera shake reduction are also advantages over the other makers (except Sony, which has in-camera shake reduction.) But yeah, this is an amazing camera.

  • @quite1enough
    @quite1enough 10 месяцев назад

    What's the best digital camera in your opinion, aside from K-1?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  10 месяцев назад +1

      There's no one clear answer. I think that the best digital camera is the one that meets the photographer's needs the best. For me that includes 4K video, 35-ish megapixels, exceptional raw image editing capability, good autofocus, a suitable framerate, and a silent shutter option. For other people, it may be a small camera that can record great still and fit inside a back pocket. Other people who may not carry a camera as much may have no concerns for size and weight and just be focused on product photography or professional model photography image quality. So rather than asking what is the best camera, the question is 'what are my needs and what camera meets those the best.' I think that key in that list above, brand does not appear as a criteria. For me, that was the A7 IV and it handily beats the K-1 in my book. Would I like the A9 whatever is newest better? I don't know, but I do know it's WAY more camera than I want or need. Same with an EOS R1 or Nikon Z whatever their best camera is.

      I prefer the Mk1 to the Mk2 because the Mk2 has raw file processing that reduces sharpness compared to the Mk1. It's not a huge amount, but it is noticeable in some situations and it can't be disabled. I also don't think that the added ISO range or hand-held pixel-shift mode are quite as exciting as other people would indicate.
      As for dipping the camera in a river, I would not for any reason do that. It's a very well made camera, but it's not an underwater camera. I would be okay carrying it in the rain with a weather-sealed lens, however.

    I mainly shoot on digital and this year just started shooting film on a K1000 and an smc m 50 1.4. I don't know how much i wanna get a K1 mainly because there's no 105 or 135 prime. However i wanna know what you feel about Fuji cameras! Especially my X-Pro 3!

      @DavidHancock  4 года назад

      I don't shoot Fuji. Nothing against them, there are just more cameras than time. So I don't really have any thoughts. Andrew and Denae shoot a lot of Fuji, however.
      As for the 105 and 135, there are just not in a modern mount. If you're okay with manual focus there is an amazing Takumar 105mm f/2.8 lens that you can use with an M42 to K adapter ring and it renders images very well on the K-1. Also there are some legacy Pentax K mount lenses, like the 135mm A*, that are simply stunning, just manual focus.

    • @DavidHancock

      Yes, but they won't communicate the aperture for metering. For that you'd need to use the green button to stop-down the lens and perform metering then either shoot stopped-down in aperture-priority mode or adjust your shutter speed in manual mode based on the meter readings taken with the lens stopped down,

    Enjoyed your review of the Pentax K1. I've had a couple of Pentax's in the past a 6x7 & a LX great quality.. Just wondering what are your feelings now in 2020 towards the Pentax K1 mk II ? I have narrowed my search down to these 2 cameras. The K1 mk II & Nikon D850. The price of the Pentax is very attractive. But does that come at a cost of a camera that is unreliable or service department slow? What are your thoughts. Thank you in advance for your response.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 года назад +2

      Thank you! So I can speak to a bunch of that just having gotten my K-1 and 50mm (the new one with all the letters) 1.4 back from Ricoh in Japan having been repaired. There are a lot of criticisms about Pentax repairs being slow. If the Pentax DSLR is your only DSLR, that's an issue. They're slow. it took six months for my 50mm to be diagnosed and repaired. the issue ended up being in my K-1, which was about 2.5 years out of warranty. Pentax fixed that for free. I was without my k-1 for about 90 days as it had to go to Japan (where the 50mm lens already was) to diagnose the issue. It took time but they did it right and fixed it well and in the process upgraded my k-1 to the newest firmware and cleaned it exceptionally well. So if you have a backup DSLR, the repair time can be inconvenient but is worth it.
      I forget if the K-1 and D850 use the same sensor. I feel like the answer is yes, but i'm not a digital hardware guru so don't quote me on that. If they do then the differentiators are interface, camera build, and backing software, which is as important as any physical component in modern DSLRs.
      For the MKII, it's a great camera. I elected not to upgrade because there was something with the system that softened the details in the raw files and for my work that's not acceptable. I photograph a lot of dogs and when I do I need their fur to have individually-identifiable pieces. I'm VERY picky about that. I also want to see the strands in their irises in head shots. I imagine that the MKII can still do all that, but I didn't want to risk it with an upgrade. Sharpness can always be removed; it can never effectively be added. But for the 7 billion people in the world less nutty about that one thing than I am, the MKII will be an amazing camera.

      I am afraid that Nikon are discontinuing their authorised repair centres, leaving only Canon AFAIK. www.ifixit.com/News/34241/nikon-is-killing-its-authorized-repair-program
      After that, repairers are independent. All the full sized camera companies are in financial trouble, who knows what will have happened in 5 years, say? Nothing unreliable about Pentax, IDK where you get that from; they have always been good on build quality and the K-1 is built like a tank.

      You can, yes. There are some caveats: With the FA lenses, they work perfectly. With the A lenses, you won't have AF because they don't have that capability. With the M and K lenses, you won't have metering unless you use the green button metering method or stop-down metering. With M42 and an adapter, you can use AV mode if the M42 lens is on manual and you adjust the aperture before taking the photo. With M, K, and M42 lenses, video works very well in AV mode.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 года назад

      Any of the FA lenses are amazing. The FA Limiteds are some of the sharpest lenses on a line pairs per millimeter basis ever made. The star (*) lenses are some of Pentax's best, too. Pentax lenses are simply incredible, better in very many important ways (such as color, contrast, and micro contrast) than those from other firms. My Pentax K-1 lens kit includes the 31mm and 77mm FA Limites, the new 50mm f/1.4 with 70 letters in the name, an older Pentax 100mm f/2.8 macro, a Takumar 500mm f/4.5, the 40mm f/2.8 XS pancake, and some third-party lenses including the Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone, Komura 100mm f/1.8, Quantaray 70-300mm (Tamron-made, I think), and a Sigma-made Spiratone 85mm f/1.9. Realistically, 95% of the work I do is with the 31mm, 50mm, and 77mm. Most all of the remainder is with the 100mm.
      Any Pentax prime will be great. If you elected to get the K-1 and just the three Limiteds, you'd almost never need another lens.

      I mean, it's now almost ten years old, and even new it was an upper-mid model, not a super-high-end machine, but that doesn't change the fact that this camera's file are very large and can be hard to manage for people without top-tier PCs.
