    This was the review I was looking for! Old school Pentax shooter and newer Canon user here. R5 has been recently fixed a little by firmware. Newer Nikon out now as you mention. I always loved traveling with Pentax and it is still a beast, just wish they had more kit. Great job!!! I still may go Pentax and not R5…

    Over all, on stills-photograpy and outdoor-usability noone can beat the pentax-beasts.

      Yup, I cant imagine people using the R5 for out door landscape and astro. That would be a horrible time. Battery to poor dynamic range. Nikon, hopefully they fix all their kinks but the weather seal is x2 thinner than the Pentax. Pentax is a stellar performer for photo. It seems the competition has added so many features and they forgot the 1 main feature, to take a good photo.

      I don't think the Pentax is the best on stills- photography here. Honestly I think the Pentax is a good camera for the price but it left me worried as it couldn't show some colours that the other cameras were able to show, specially the R5.
      Compared to the others it is like the K1 got some kind colour signature, sometimes it helps other times it doesn't. The problem is a lot noticable when the pictures are darker.

    Great review as always. R5 is so crippled, and no one else mention these problems (except Canon in their manual 😁) Both Z7 and K1 performed great in your test.

    • @theCameraVille
      @theCameraVille  4 года назад +6

      yup, the canon rep actually directed me to this manual book. Its all in the book and it is funny. No wonder Canon don't get in trouble. They wrote it all down for everyone lol. It is 400+ page of craziness. There is stuff about AF in video and how bad it is if you do certain things. Its a lot. Its like the most interesting thing I have ever read for a camera.
      I think people are advertising this camera for the first 20% of the battery life and pretending it works well. I didn't see anything like that. The camera is battery driven.
      I also forgot to mentioned that during my testing, the canon locked me out because I shot video / photos and it was just not having it. At other times, I was shooting low quality video with photo and within 1 hour, battery drain.

    Nice video as it addresses misjudgements of the K1 by the landscape community - it truely was ahead of its class when released and still has features not found by latest other brand models. A couple of weeks ago I fell backwards into a creek and totally submerged my K1 with 15-30 on - landed with enough force to smash the filter that was on the front. I took the battery out (and sd cards) and dried out in the sun at home and all work perfectly (completely dead at time of dunking). I thought the sd cards may have had a slight bit of moisture when I removed and certainly the 15-30 did fog up on inside but it has done that before in heavy rain so I was fairly confident it would dry out completely which it did.

      K7 to change the flash button and K5 after the crash to see how was it. They are build like tanks and only the upper classes of C and N are build similar, but cost more. A crowded market will be full of innovation: look at the CPU market. If a camera from few years ago can still compete with the competiotion the market is ill. So the incremental adds don't matter, so the big players lie each year, or the evolution of the domain is getting on a flat surface...

It's just super small camera compared to the k1 and d850. I agree with you on the improvements needed. For me the af is the biggest difference between these cameras. But most of us knew how big difference there is here so I appreciate that you spent more time on the IQ because that's what people are wandering about. @christopherward5065 4 года назад +3

    You can see from your review where chasing headline specs can make a camera less useable. Your review showed that whilst Pentax doesn’t shoehorn every high powered super feature in, they get a reliable accurate machine that isn’t going to break in the field or default to lower than advertised performance. A four year old camera that has superior image quality and build quality therefore, isn’t a bad thing to have. Pentax fulfils it’s niche and can be evolved when necessary as reliability in new features can be guaranteed. No one has given as comprehensive a review of the problems that mirrorless cameras need to overcome as you just have. It seems that Pentax is a bit more honest in its approach, in terms of use priorities and marketing headlines. They are a bit less available but lead on ruggedness, reliability, and image quality. Mirrorless still feels like a way to revitalise a saturated market and reduce the manufacturing costs of a camera.

    • @theCameraVille
      @theCameraVille  4 года назад +1

      Yup exactly. I basically had to generalize the standout feature in each system and no other brand comes close for the out doors in landscape (interior, exterior, stills) / astro than the Pentax. Pentax is very clean and durable. Its like a northface for the camera system.

      I was shocked to hear about the maximum frame rate dropping with a battery below 70%, 12fps to 5fps is crazy. It's like you'll change the battery in the middle of a wedding ceremony to make sure you have charge, and then right before the first kiss the battery will dip to 69%... boom, shot ruined. Perhaps that's unlikely in that time frame, but I'd much rather have a rugged camera that does what it's supposed to do ALL the time, and still does it really well.

    The low light performance comparison between a 36MP camera vs 45MP cameras is not comparing apples to apples. If you threw in a 24MP camera (Z6? R6?) into the comparison you’d see that it has even better low light capabilities compared to these cameras. It’s physics. For the same size sensor a lower MP version will have better noise performance than a higher MP sensor due to the individual pixels being larger and being better to capture and translate the light information it is receiving.

      Pentax has an assortment of awesome glass that will easily meet the needs of 95% of photographers. My lens collection starts at 15 and goes to 300 with a lot of overlap and no gaps. and the lenses are fast with great IQ. My question to all the critics who complain of Pentax's lineup is to simply ask "What lens do you want?" And I usually hear crickets. Other than the extremes (e.g., 10mm, 600 f/4, etc.) which are needed only by a tiny fraction of shooters, and highly specialized lenses (e.g., a dedicated tilt-shift), the Pentax lineup is just fine. I've been a professional Pentax shooter since the 80s, and have never missed a shot because I didn't have the right lens. And who cares if the competition has a dozen different lenses for each focal length to choose from: most of us only need one of each, right? I'm not trying to be a jerk, and deep down inside I still crave some lenses that Pentax doesn't make, but my point is just that for virtually all hobby-shooters and almost all of us pros, the Pentax lineup is just fine, so we should just get what we need and go shoot amazing photos!

    Ive been shooting the canon r5 since it came out and that slight red you see i bet can be corrected with white balance. Also in real world use for a wedding i had to push exposure 3 stops and it looked perfect. No question pentax did a great job with the 36mp sony sensor on the mark 1 though. You should try the Panasonic s1 though because that's the best dynamic range I've seen from any full frame sensor.

      Yup, practical exposure push should be fine. That was where I did my iso test on the plants, they all look the same. Pushing all photos didn't break. When you do dark scenes, that's when it gets funky.
      Yup, Canon has that red color cast, which is fine. They are known to be warmer so I wasn't really surprise. I had the 7d mkii and a 5d markiii in the past, it looks nice for portraits.

I don't see how they are going to be able to use their proprietary canon sensors for that 80 megapixel full frame thats rumored to come out.....That will only make the noise worse.

    Considering that the K-1 is a 2016 camera, the other brands should feel ashamed for the shortcomings of their products (even more so at that price tag...).
    I think that this is the side effect of developing the relatively new technologies applied to ML, that is customers pay for beta version cameras (like with Sony a7 and a7 II).
    I think Pentax made a sensible choice not to dive into ML market; too few resources and too high competition. Better perfecting what's already a killer camera, at a very reasonable price.

    K1 was a great dslr of its time with that nostalgia film look in photos, but it’s old news now and still overpriced.
    Even my R6 is cleaner and sharper with only 20mp. Like night and day.

      Ryan, looks like you dont understand the science behind image test.
      What you are saying is basically referring to the LENS you bought for your Canon. You are comparing new glass vs old Pentax glass. ( glass makes up the final image) You can put sharp glass on low megapixel camera and it will still be sharp. That is what you are describing.
      My test I am talking about the sensor quality. How durable the file is. How much you can push and pull in case you do deep editing.
      Also, Dxo mark, Canon R5 scored a 95 which ranks over all #17 which is quite low score for a $4000 camera. ( I had one, I returned mine, I have the R6 now)
