Pentax just has to be the best. I currently own a K3 and it amazes me just how well it performs against Canons/Nikons which cost twice as much. Plus the extra features and superior build quality. My next camera will definitely be the K1. Edit: The Fijifilm X-T2 looks really interesting - especially for video even though it' APS-C. Tough choice.
@@discoverBR Low light performance happens to be one of the major reasons I went for Pentax when I first bought a DSLR about 10 years ago. Back then the K-r had low light/high ISO performance that rivaled cameras costing four or five times as much. I have since then bought another two Pentax cameras and while I know from the results I get that they have even better low light performance than the K-r (as one would expect) but I cannot tell you how it compares with other brands today. I will probably be buying a K1-II soon but the low light performance will be something I will be checking to see if it still maintains a lead, or at least parity with other similarly priced cameras since low light makes up the major part of my photography.
Good review, should've mentioned that it comes at a much lower price compared to other full frame bodies with similar specs, very attractive for people thinking of upgrading to a full frame camera such as myself.
On the downside you are restricted to the Pentax lens lineup. After several years of shooting with Pentax I switched to mirrorless full frame adapting lenses from all around the world - manually though. But I'm definitely considering to purchase this one too for all its special features and smoother shooting with my beloved Pentax FA lenses.
memoires de la mer Doesn't Sigma, Tamron and Rokinon make lenses for Pentax system too? If I can get a camera and the 50 1.4 art I'd be happy for years)
If I didn't get my facts wrong, the 50 mill Art is currently not available for Pentax. (Sic!) I actually was pretty happy with the Pentax FA 31mm on APS-C and I am happy to use this jewel on FF right now, and will expectably be happier using it on Pentax FF. But since I also love wide TS-lenses, Pentax wasn't the first choice. Just my two cents
memoires de la mer Maybe I misread the topic that listed the sigma's that are scratching the k1 body when mounted. They had the previous 50 1.4, not the art one.
+Narek Avetisyan Yup just a bit larger than current Pentax DSLR's. Would've never guessed it was a full frame DSLR considering how huge Canon and Nikon full frame DSLR's are!
Thanks much for your hands on review. I was also wondering how well the K-1 implements live view while shooting still images? Does it accurately display a preview of the exposure prior to taking the shot?
That third dial you can set is an amazing idea! Also the astro star tracking thing is amazing! And sensor shift for better landscape photography! I wish I could have this camera.
Also, I watched another review that didn't explain the third dial properly and they said it was cumbersome, they obviously didn't understand it because when you explained it properly it sounds like what I have always wanted.
Very good video you are very well spoken and easy to understand. Pentax makes a great product to bad their cameras a re not more popular. The K1 is really nice looking. In the hand it doesn't look as large as it does standing alone.
An excellent explanation of the Pentax K-1 features and how it is to shoot with. Excellent photo examples as well. I've always been a fan of Pentax, going back to the days of film when I first used them. I hope to be able to get the K-1 soon. By the way, what do you think of that Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens you were using on the K-1? Was that the 50mm "Art" lens? I can't find anyone who has that lens available in the Pentax K-mount. And Sigma doesn't list it for Pentax on their website.
Great review! I see you have a Sigma lens on the K-1. Are there any 3rd party lenses besides the new, current D FA Pentax lenses that would work on the K-1? That would be able to take advantage of the 36MP's and the whole sensor?
35mm film or 135 film was originally meant to be shot vertically in cinema cameras, at 24X18mm . Then Oskar Barnack at Ernst Leitz in Germany turned the film sideays in his first Ur-Leica and went on to build some suitable lenses for the small format. Most of probably you know this, but I find it a bit odd to call the 24x36mm format full frame, when originally it was meant to be used in a close to APS-C-like format of 18X24mm. So I call 24x36 "double frame format" and APS-C "standard format". And indeed, you can just stitch 2 APS-C images together vertically to obtain a "full frame image". And if you use Canon's latest 90D in this way you will obtain a full frame of 65 Mp - twice that of the K-1. Just saying. (Then again Pixel-shift in the K1 can evidently give you 150-190Mb file sizes. But this works best with no subject movement .) My point is still: Don't underestimate APS-C. This format was used on huge cinema screens back in the days and Kodak still produces motion picture film. La La Land was shot mostly on film.
Looks like a great new camera from Pentax. If it's as good as my K-5II, and it appears it is, then I will have to seriously look at getting one. Thanks for the video.
Shawn - I see you have the Sigma 50mm f.1.4 on the Pentax K-1. Were the photos shown in the video taken with that lens? And were you able to use FF mode taking the photos or did you have to use crop mode? I own a K-1 (and love it!), but curious how well the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 works on the camera.
Thanks Shawn. So they were shot in full frame mode and not in crop mode? All of that to ask - will the lens work on the Pentax K-1 in ff mode with little to no vignetting?
Excellent review! Hey, being more of a wildlife photographer, I was sold on Pentax K-3ii as my next camera, but now I am getting K-1. If you want to move up, why not select the very best in class ha-ha.
Thanks for previewing the K-1. My k -5iis is a tough camera. I nearly bought a Canikon because everyone else has one, but the Pentax just feels so solid (imo). I hope Ricoh keeps moving forward.....even if it's at a snail's pace. Maybe we Pentaxians just move a lot slower than everyone else. You can pick on a Pentax user all you want, but they won't get it until you're long gone and you're unable to experience the satisfaction of slamming someone for their preference/taste in cameras ;-)
This is a great review! everything I needed to know, thank you. I would love to see a review comparing the K1 to the Nikon D810, D750, the Canon 5Diii and the Sony A7rii ...
hi I heard you said the pixel shift could be use in handheld? is this true? I heard only works in tripod. if yes, what is the lowest speed for that handheld? thank you.
+danny iskandar Yes it can be used handheld, the K1 applies pixel shift only to the static areas of the picture and ignores areas where there has been movement between the four consecutive shots enabling hand-held usage of the feature.
Shake Reduction really works in video mode? Surprised they added that because that was one of the main complaints against the K-3. How well does it work?
+kenyee88 I do not do a lot of video but I own the K1 (it arrived in the mail 2 days ago) and used it for the first time yesterday. I find the shake reduction works as well as any other video camera. Of course, if you go very high end in video cameras, those would be better. But I find the system to work very well. Definitely well enough for my needs.
+kenyee88 It's only digital shake reduction for video, Pentax claims they did not implement the sensor based shake reduction to avoid additional noise on the audio track when taking video but I think they should make it optional.
The sensor based reduction for photos works wonderfully. I came from a Nikon D300s with Nikon's optical shake reduction and the Pentax sensor version is much better. For video it isn't bad, but as James said, its not the best. However I think its comparable to a "normal" camera. It's good enough for my needs though. But if you plan to mainly use this for video, I'd go against it.
+Jonathan Villamil The 35 Art is already available for Pentax. As for the others, Sigma has said that currently there is not enough demand. If the K-1 sells like sliced bread, and Sigma sees a chance for profit, they may produce certain lenses for Pentax. If not, then not. No one can tell.
I purchased this fine camera about 6 months ago and I've only used it on Auto and only used jpegs straight out of the camera, I mainly shoot nocturnal wildlife and for that it's perfect, I can pretty much use it as a point and shoot camera and get fantastic results, other cameras I've had required all sorts of pissing about with settings just to get a good shot
The one thing that disappointed me a little is the low frame rate, which is a considerable step backward from the K-3 I currently own does 8 FPS. I guess that being full frame rather than APS-C the larger mirror and shutter are naturally slower to move due to their bulk but I would have thought that a few years advancement of technology would have compensated for that.
8 minute mark,... The Sensor-Shift DOES NOT operate in video mode. The last Pentax where the sensor stabilization was active in Video was the K-5, all bodies since use 'MovieSR', which is onboard software, and is best left switched OFF as it will introduce more jello wobble in the vision then can be believed. There has finally been a response to requests to re-activate sensor shift in video, but no action on it as of May 2017. Same applies to the newer KP, and the older K3 / K3ii. And yes, that is a K-01 in my profile pic.
Thow the Red Dragon into the mix, since a single raw frame of that produces better pictures that the highest rated sensor on DxO Mark and you'll understand that the line between photo and video cameras has been officially erasted since some time ago.
+toocoolforu he actually put an annotation correcting that. he had meant "first full frame dslr with image stabilization," not full frame camera; the sony a7rii & a7sii are mirrorless cameras. i would love to see these two cameras compared in a review.
Dan Lee number AF points is not matter... who good are they is matter... Canon has the least but it is the best in tracking.... After more research I gave up this Pentax... I wait for 6DmkII
Sadly, the K-1 does not use the IBIS for video stabilization. They revert to electronic stabilization for video like in the K-3. This seems like something they could fix with a firmware release. I'm crossing my fingers but not holding my breath.
+Collin Douglas That's because the IBIS mechanics lets out ugly mechanical sounds that the mic can pick up, even outside mics fastened to the body. Any ways I find shooting 1080p and framing smaller frame without the electronic stabilization makes it better for post process stabilization.
I love this camera. The price has gone up since I purchased, but it's still worth the cost. There are not many full-frame options in a price range most people are willing to spend on a camera, and these specs are monstrous compared to anything in the same range. It has the K-mount lens so I've been able to use my old film-era lenses, which has been awesome. There is no pop-up flash built in to the body but the sharpness at high ISO almost makes it unnecessary, plus it has a hot shoe mount for when you do want a flash. The body is big and heavy, but if you're going for a FF you're probably okay with that. The auto-focus is great but if you primarily shoot sports you'll find the speed lacking. Just saw this on Amazon: Pentax K-1 Full Frame Camera by Pentax amzn.to/2hjOEHO
Underp4ntz I think Pentax/Ricoh only outsources their sensor and has their own implementation of IBIS. The K20 uses Samsung sensor and it has IBIS. Besides Pentax managed to do more creative stuff with their IBIS module compared to other manufacturers, such as low pass filter emulation
I really love the camera but.. And this is my problem.. I just feel there aren't enough lenses out there and a lot of the used prices feel too high to me.. Plus the 3rd party folks seem to be shying away from the k mount.. I absolutely adore so much about it however (the resolution, ibis, build, control layout etc) seem perfect for my nature and flower photography. I think it's a great deal however and I just adore the fact it will force canikony to respond..
+Kenji S These are definitely valid concerns. There are a few lenses made by third parties that I wish were available for my K-3 but overall I don't really feel like there's a lack of lenses. I've got seven K mount lenses (two are manual) and four m42 screw mount lenses. All but two of these are full-frame compatible and I cover a range from 18mm to 500mm. This includes one Sigma (18-35 f/1.8 art) and a Tamron (70-300 cheapo lens). I am personally hoping that we'll see a revival of third-party support now that the K-1 is released but I'll definitely run out of money before I run out of cool lenses to buy. What camera do you currently use?
Collin Douglas I run 2 at the moment, my beloved beat to snot eos 7d (going on 7 years old due for replacement likely with a 7d mark 2) for wildlife and insect macros and anytime I need "the big gun" or extremely good af,burst or build quality, with a selection of tokina 11-16, Canon 15-85 and 100mm f/2.8L macro and a Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG and 150-600 C..soon I'm adding a Sigma 50-100 f1.8 or a Tamron 70-200 VC to this system....I also run a Panasonic lumix gx8 that serves as a go everywhere camera (with the 15mm summilux and 45 macro elmarit..soon adding the 25 summilux to that) for when I need to travel light.... As much as I love the Pentax its probably understandable to see my hesitation lol
+Kenji S hehe. I do see the hesitation. :-) The Tokina 11-16 is one of the lenses that I would like to have in K mount. My go to lenses are the Pentax 100mm, f2.8 macro, FA 77 f1.8 limited and Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Art. My 500mm is an old manual lens but I like it and I've even shot video with it. I'd put the Pentax build quality up against anything but I seriously doubt it could keep up with the 7D2 for AF speed.
+Lawrence Chang The Sony A900 and A850 (which I have) are full frame DSLR's'. However, they are no longer in production. I'm also not sure if they were 5 axis, maybe they were 4?
Sony had the DSLR-A900 back in 2008... and it was a full frame, 24megapixel camera which had in-camera image stabilizing, which worked very well. They beat the Pentax K-1 by 8 years. Check it out.
Oh reviews are done in Melbourne now! Much prefer this guy's attitude over Blunty. Blunty used to be good but his recent videos are more like his angry rants rather a constructive review
Looks like a high quality body at a reasonable price unlike the competition but unfortunately you're stuck buying crappy Sigma lenses or "Pentax" lenses made by sigma.
+Loopsrainforest Try checking your facts, Pentax lenses are not made by Sigma. Some Pentax lenses have been made with Tamron, but that is very limited (3 or so in the current lineup). Also, the so called crappy Sigma lenses in the Art Series equal or better any lenses offered by OEMs, certainly far better than the crappy kit and consumer grade lenses.
only full frame with 5 axis IS? no Sony has it in A7rii for a long while. 36 mpix and to to mention sonys cameras, at least 42 mpix Ar7ii?? I am not a sony fanboy but I do not like ignorance of great cameras out there.
Thanks fire your review. Wow ; a positive review of Pentax in Australia! Incredible! I've pre-ordered the K-1. I've been shooting the K-3 (to of the line previous to K-1 apart from the 645s) for a year now and it's a fantastic camera. The K-1 combines the best of the 645 and the K-3, then some more. This camera will doubtless turn Europe and Asia upside down. I hope it will have the same effect in Australia! It may even win in the USA if consumers can look at facts instead of flashy advertising! It's my hope that by this time next year we'll have three brands dominating the market instead of just Canikon. The competition will give us better cameras and lower prices. Here's to innovation, something Pentax is very good at :-) Steve Barnes from www.stevebarnes.photography.
+Dan Lee Some people would say that the A99 is not a true DSLR since it has an Electronic Viewfinder, rather than the traditional Prism and mirror of the optical viewfinder that gives the name to the Single-Lens-Reflex (SLR)
+Ch Chand Tanha I own the K-1 and used it for the first time yesterday. For the price, I don't see why you would need to go Nikon (at least for my needs). It is a fantastic camera.
+Taiwan Explorer agreed. But for my needs, it's more than enough. Since this is Pentax's first full frame DSLR, I expect more glass to come later. I've been a long time Nikon user (at least for DSLRs) before I got the K-1.
nice hair dude. A 70's thing when such was common - along with body shirts, flairs and platforms. Do you ever get a pinched bum from guys behind thinking you're a chick?.. But of course I'm just jealous.. follicly challenged as I am. But I must say dude, you look really really like Steve Buscemi in ConAir.. Hey work on it dude - he's rich
Terrible review. You've managed to list features without talking at all about the performance of those features or the image quality.. Youve given nothing that isnt on the promotional material. I would suggest the camera stores reviews as a good starting point to work on your material.

Thanks Toni, I'm glad the video was useful to you. Enjoy the new camera
I've seen three other reviews and yours is best so far. Very well spoken, clear.
Thanks Thomas, glad you enjoyed it
From years ago when I bought a Pentax camera in Tokyo I started to believe Pentax is extraordinary and the best...
Good review, should've mentioned that it comes at a much lower price compared to other full frame bodies with similar specs, very attractive for people thinking of upgrading to a full frame camera such as myself.

Thanks, think your the first hands on youtube video I've watched. btw Pentax have done Medium format for years, they didn't just do APS-C!
+thejudgehasjudged the K1 is actually the best camera for photographing the T-virus experiments.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 art is available in k-mount
+Go Onasis what about the 20mm f/1.4 art?
The first full 135 film frame digital camera ever was a Pentax, the Pentax MZ-D, but it was never marketed. It was introduced in 2000.
Will you be reviewing the Aussie shampoo range soon?
Not all Pentax digital cameras have been APSC. Forgot about the 645d and 645z?
35mm film or 135 film was originally meant to be shot vertically in cinema cameras, at 24X18mm .
Then Oskar Barnack at Ernst Leitz in Germany turned the film sideays in his first Ur-Leica and went on to build some suitable lenses for the small format.

But this works best with no subject movement .)
My point is still: Don't underestimate APS-C.

I would love to see a review comparing the K1 to the Nikon D810, D750, the Canon 5Diii and the Sony A7rii ...
How's the Sigma 50 mm 1.4 mounted on to K1. Does Sigma make it for Pentax ?
May I know what is the lens attached to your Pentax body??
hi I heard you said the pixel shift could be use in handheld? is this true? I heard only works in tripod. if yes, what is the lowest speed for that handheld? thank you.

One correction: Prior to the K-1 full-frame, there were APS-C digital AND Medium Format digital (e.g., 645D, 645Z).
THANK YOU for AA reference saying it was "clarity" vs. "sharpness" directly. It's a math trick :)
Actually, they've had 645D and 645Z prior to this. Worth mentioning .... :) despite the $3-9K price tags at 2016 prices.
Any news on Sigma producing their fullframe art lens on Pentax to go with this camera?
+Jonathan Villamil The 35 Art is already available for Pentax. As for the others, Sigma has said that currently there is not enough demand. If the K-1 sells like sliced bread, and Sigma sees a chance for profit, they may produce certain lenses for Pentax. If not, then not. No one can tell.

nice review ...long live pentax..
Brilliant! Very emoting review. Thank you.

+toocoolforu u are not catching Pentax's marketing trick here........... A7 series are not "DSLR"
Narek Avetisyan Yeah I realized after commenting. Though DSLR and mirrorless becomes more and more irrelevant today.
Thow the Red Dragon into the mix, since a single raw frame of that produces better pictures that the highest rated sensor on DxO Mark and you'll understand that the line between photo and video cameras has been officially erasted since some time ago.
+toocoolforu he actually put an annotation correcting that. he had meant "first full frame dslr with image stabilization," not full frame camera; the sony a7rii & a7sii are mirrorless cameras. i would love to see these two cameras compared in a review.
waiting for the DXOmark review... if it can beat A7II ill buy it
it struggles with moving objects more than the A7II does and has less AF points sadly.
Dan Lee number AF points is not matter... who good are they is matter... Canon has the least but it is the best in tracking....
After more research I gave up this Pentax... I wait for 6DmkII
good review. I prefer minimal cameras though.
+Sterby jr. That might very well be true but I would like to be able to make the choice of using it or not depending on the situation.
What lens are you using?
The Sony a900 is full frame and has in-body stabilization. It came out in 2008.
+Charlie McNulty well it's not DSLR.. it's DSLT
look it up
+trias prasetya The Sony a900 is a DSLR with a CCD sensor with steady shot, the a99 is the DSLT.
+stalif I stand corrected ;)
ENGLISCH
which camera they would recommend me for photographing stars?
hubble lens, buy a rocket ship and go up there and use that, should work out
I believe Sony did IBIS on a DSLR with A99?
Underp4ntz I think Pentax/Ricoh only outsources their sensor and has their own implementation of IBIS. The K20 uses Samsung sensor and it has IBIS. Besides Pentax managed to do more creative stuff with their IBIS module compared to other manufacturers, such as low pass filter emulation
It wasn’t the only full frame camera with 5 axis in body stabilization, the Sony a7II had it at the time
Hi there. I stated that it was the only full frame DSLR with in body stabilisation. The Sony A7 range are mirrorless cameras.
image stabilization - in FF DSLR, yes .. but mirror-less cameras for a year and half now (at least). :)
The Tokina 11-16 is one of the lenses that I would like to have in K mount.
Pentax K-1 is not the Only camera on the market with a 5 axis IBIS! The Sony A7II lineup got this almost two years ago! (0:39)
+eppen1 notice him saying "DSLR"?
Oh yeah, thats totally true!
+Lawrence Chang The Sony A900 and A850 (which I have) are full frame DSLR's'. However, they are no longer in production. I'm also not sure if they were 5 axis, maybe they were 4?
which has better dynamic range: d750 or k1?
+Reach d750
K1
Is there no in body stabilization in Sony A7ii?
Sony A7 series are not DSLR's
+digiDIRECT the sony a900 was the first full frame DSLR to have it in body stabilisation, back in 2008. Nice review!
do you have a link to that sigma somehwere?
+Nicolas Marlow It's the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 of the previous generation.
Gear to get a review which is simply a review and not a whole load of BS performance whatever . Good job friend
Thanks, glad you enjoyed
Pentax K1 or Sony A7RII?
Sony had the DSLR-A900 back in 2008... and it was a full frame, 24megapixel camera which had in-camera image stabilizing, which worked very well. They beat the Pentax K-1 by 8 years. Check it out.
Gil Knutsack and Pentax was making slr cameras 40yrs before sony .... your "point" is useless....
Oh reviews are done in Melbourne now! Much prefer this guy's attitude over Blunty. Blunty used to be good but his recent videos are more like his angry rants rather a constructive review
At 1:16 , you can see small scratch above lens mount.

Better than that bulky Nikon D810 😀 Until Olympus or Panasonic goes FF this is the FF camera I want 😀👍🏻👍🏻
nice looking camera!
Come on Pentax give us a medium format 67ii replacement!!!!
props for using a 50
+Brennan Probst I used to have that 50, it's pretty damn good for the cheap price you can find them. (Sigma 50 EX f/1.4)
This is more like an infomercial than an actual review.
Want one!
no 4k ?!! shit that hurts.
Stalker at 3:12
Not a word about the viewfinder.
Man you should know that Sony A7ii , A7s II , A7rii all have internal iS
***** sure I agree with you , kind regards
Looks like a high quality body at a reasonable price unlike the competition but unfortunately you're stuck buying crappy Sigma lenses or "Pentax" lenses made by sigma.
+Loopsrainforest Try checking your facts, Pentax lenses are not made by Sigma. Some Pentax lenses have been made with Tamron, but that is very limited (3 or so in the current lineup). Also, the so called crappy Sigma lenses in the Art Series equal or better any lenses offered by OEMs, certainly far better than the crappy kit and consumer grade lenses.
I prefer my old MS and 35,50,85,200 lenes
You forgot SONY's DSLR and DSLT cameras.
thats because sony blows...
+Darren Davenport Thanks for your thoughtful and concise comment.
sony pretty much the best apc-camera in a6300 and the best full frame camera a7rii , and the best low light and video dlr the a7sii.
+Phil Rose not to mention your thoughtful reply....
At least my reply was spelled correctly and made a point.
thanks
beast
only full frame with 5 axis IS? no Sony has it in A7rii for a long while.
Sony a99 has IBIS already so you are wrong.. That's a DSLR and FF
+Dan Lee Some people would say that the A99 is not a true DSLR since it has an Electronic Viewfinder, rather than the traditional Prism and mirror of the optical viewfinder that gives the name to the Single-Lens-Reflex (SLR)
+Raúl Rodríguez Some would say that's splitting hairs, the viewfinder is superior on the a99 anyway :P
+Dan Lee only in your tiny mind danny boy.... 😆
+Darren Davenport my tiny mind still has a higher IQ ;)
5 years time all cameras will have electronic viewfinders.
omg that old sigma on K1 is crappy, sample images look really bad
thank U
How much ? indian rupess
nikon D810 or K1?
+Ch Chand Tanha I own the K-1 and used it for the first time yesterday. For the price, I don't see why you would need to go Nikon (at least for my needs). It is a fantastic camera.
+Taiwan Explorer agreed. But for my needs, it's more than enough. Since this is Pentax's first full frame DSLR, I expect more glass to come later. I've been a long time Nikon user (at least for DSLRs) before I got the K-1.
K1 for sure. Smaller body with pixel shift and in body stabilization.
it's massive
+Tecnovlog it's tiny
Gprnysc
nice hair dude. "["Sweet Home Alabama" plays in background, to Poe and Baby-O]
Garland Greene: " Define irony. Bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.".." Hey work on it dude - he's rich
some say dont buy the first
they weren't lying when they said it's a ugly camera
+D Ch Who are "they"?
What kind of joke do you have to be to care what your camera looks like
its the most beautiful FF DSLR
Lots of information, but not much of a review
Jisus
"K1"? Did they originally not plan to sell it in North America? What's the next FF DSLR going to be called? "Viagra"? :)
Didn't get it
Terrible review. You've managed to list features without talking at all about the performance of those features or the image quality.. Youve given nothing that isnt on the promotional material. I would suggest the camera stores reviews as a good starting point to work on your material.
