👌🏼💪🏼nice review. Nikon shooter takes an honest look at Pentax... so refreshing. I so wish Pentax would seriously up their marketing game in the US. First thing they should do is hire you, BTW. They’re always considered such an “also ran” in the camera contests when as you continue to show, they are truly top tier finishers. Thanks for all your hard work and honest critiques of Pentax’s pros and cons and how these stack up against the competition.
Thanks Craig! yea, I was always curious about the Pentax brand so I dedicated this channel to review it from a Nikon point of view, so things wont be too bias. I do lay the hammer on Pentax here and there but overall its really an interesting brand. It has all the general specs one can ever need to take photos in a small package. I will have to admit, I thought Fuji was going to win it all but I was wrong. Pentax held up quite nicely for a 3 year old camera.
I have been a Pentax fan since 1977. Their cameras are made for the photographer, not the photo pro. They are well thought out. I shoot Pentax gear for myself, and Nikon for any paying jobs I get (Nikon has better TTL flash but are a pain to use.)
HA! I agree on the TTL, its great it has TTL but really its a pain to use lol. I have also the Nikon for many years. There is always that pros and cons.
yes! I had to redo this review because I realize I was jumping in too fast. I had to take my time with it. After using 6 lenses later, I can see the difference. I cant wait to share~!
Thanks Li for the good work, especially for the color comparison part, always interesting to see such things. Just would like to hear your thoughts on the viewfinders experience. How did it feel to you in terms of size and eye point? I personally wear glasses and I have to take them off all the time to get the full picture through X-E3’s viewfinder.
Yup. unfortunately the view finder isnt that good on the Fuji. I also had to take off my glasses if I wanted a more immerse view of the scene. It felt small and always lagged a lot as well. I was told to turn all these setting ons, but then it chews up the battery faster. In the end, if you do own the xt30, make sure you have several batteries around if you plan to turn on all the features on for the view finder so it doesnt lag.
Great review!! What are your thoughts on what exactly Pentax (Ricoh) are planning for their product lines? The update on the K-1 was extremely minimal, the K-P was a small step and in some ways a reversal from the K-70 and the 645 line looks all but abandoned....... I love Pentax, but it is beginning to feel like Ricoh no longer loves Pentax and is trying to figure out what they are going to do with the camera lines. I don't care if they go mirrorless, but their body refresh rates should be somewhat higher.....especially for the 645 which is way over due.... Anyway, some rambled questions.....
I think Pentax is just pumping camera and lenses like a camera company suppose to . They are taking their time to pump out quality products. I understand the feeling of abandonment. I thought the Fuji was going to rub Pentax to the ground but the test so far indicates that Pentax was always selling good long lasting products. Its just their marketing need some work.
Images of keyboard and champagne bottle look better with Pentax. Outdoor photo of the grassy lawn are much more detailed with Fuji which shows better shadows and clouds are clearly visible, whereas, Pentax looks washed out and no clouds are detectable. True, Fuji pushes the color saturation, but that has always been the trademark of Fujifilm vs. Kodak from the film days. Finally, the images of the blinds, peaking thru to the building in the background, Fuji shows far more detail vs. Pentax. This is a great comparison video. Build quality, size, and controls must go to Fuji as well. However, the Pentax has some features like DSLR, and built in image stabilization, that make the choice difficult. Would have to compare Pentax to Fuji H1 ... to make final decision.
In your highlight blown iso tests, it's interesting to see that the pentax kp is more highlight-blownout at iso 6400 than the xt30 at 6400 and so when you recover the highlights there is more detail given the shutter speed and aperture is the same. The fuji starts off as a darker exposure here and so it kind of explains why it appears more recoverable. So could it be that Iso 6400 on xt30 is actually iso 3200 compared to the pentax kp? is fuji still doing the notorious ISO cheat? Another thing to drive this point is that base native iso on xt30 starts at iso 200 whereas the pentax kp starts natively at 100.
yes Fuji is cheating all the way - since their first big seller in digital cameras - 6 years ago approximatelly. I don't recall the name of that Fuji, something also with "X" ( by the way - names of all their X models are confusing ) -- So, backthan, the Fuji was looking insanely good at Iso 6400 - almost like every other competitor at that time - at Iso 3200. -- I can recall - Some of the reporters keep telling in forums and discussions, how Fuji is cheating with Iso Numbers, so naturally it looks quite better - in comparison - with other cameras in Iso tests. -- I dont like Fuji colors, pics look just unnatural clean, and their cameras are not exiciting for me.
Thank you so much for doing this comparison. I am planning to buy a new camera within 1000 $. I have been confused between these two cameras and Nikon D7200. I am waiting for the other two comparison videos. Hopefully, I will be able to make a call after that.
I had the D7200 actually. Its quite bigger and capable as well. The WR on Pentax is better than the Nikon. The Nikon do however offer plenty of lenses like Pentax. I think at this point, if you want more compactness, get the Pentax. If you dont mind the weight and want tons of battery life, D7200 would be a good choice.
A Chinese proverb; A man with a watch always knows the time, a man with two watches, is never sure... Sometimes, these comparisons take the fun out of the thing. I would not want to see any other camera company go under and I do love Fuji's external design better than most other digital cameras. Back in the 70s there were many camera gear companies and more choices.
The KP because I can go stealth mode and carry it around the city. Light and compact. It has proven to be better than Fuji and Sony in IQ. I havent tested the K3 but its half the price of a KP almost.
Great review. I'm really hoping Pentax comes out with something... if they do fold, I think I would just try to get a few kp's and maybe a k1 on closeout discount if I could afford it. I have a lot of k mount and old screw mount glass. Anyway, since I started using Pentax digital cameras, I have compulsively used custom white balance with a white card whenever I could because for me I've always liked the results. By the way, I do have a few k-01 mirrorless cameras - they have their quirks, but I like them!
Nice Jim! I dont think Pentax will fold. They are doing what they are suppose to do which is slowly bring out good quality lens and bodies that should last long.
@@theCameraVille I hope I'm not imposing, but since you have clout with Pentax (lol!), I just saw an article on one of the Pentax forums that they are planning to release a KP-IR. What annoys me is that they openly state that they will only sell it to museums, corporations, or law inforcement but not to the public. I picked up a modified K-01 with the uv-ir filter removed that I really enjoy playing with. I was ready to impulse order the KP-IR until I read the part where I couldn't have it. I think the company is hurting themselves if they don't at least allow a special order. Anyway, thanks for all your effort in serving us folks who like Pentax.
Oh I understand where you are coming from. I think they are focusing more on industry that require these specialize feature. I remember there are some telescope that olympus wont sell to public but for researchers only. Its becoming more of a supply and demand thing. I am sure one of these KP IR may pop up in a used section on ebay or adorama could down the road request some special order. I am guessing at this point. You are correct, it is interesting they say not to public.
Great video as always but it has to be said that the X-T30 crushes the Pentax for video. Continuous autofocus, continuous eye auto focus, face detect, 4K 60 for X-T3 (not sure X-T30 60fps). Plus, as a photographer moving from Pentax to Fujifilm (yeah, I switched three months ago ☹️), the Fujifilm lenses are tack sharp wide open. I love Pentax still and would keep following the brand but Fujifilm is just the sharper tool in the box for my needs. Btw, Cameraville please can you release these video much quicker. I’ve been to your page at least three times in the last four days hoping that a new video is out. 😁 Good stuff.
Chima Chinda My man! Been a while! Apologies for the delay. Yes, the features you mentioned would be brought up in my telephoto lens comparison. The 4k though. The Xt30 gets alarming warm. Around the grip, the camera temp reached 130F. I dont think that is normal. The glass I cant agree enough but too much spoilers already Chima! Need the suspense to build lol! Good to see you man!
A new camera every year will probably push a POS instead of a seasoned machine. And most of us do not have the money to buy each new model that comes out. In fact, my first Pentax DSLR was a K-S2 and my second, a used K20D. Yes, I do crave a K-1 and a 645Z, but then again, that is a lot of dough. The K-1 or mark II is in my list, as I have several full frame lenses, 11 in total and only three APS-C zooms. The advantage of owning k-mount lens system
Li, which L-bracket do you use for the KP? I've been trying to find one that's short enough so that I have easy access to the battery compartment without having to loosen and move it every time.
At the end of the day, I think people would still choose a mirror less camera with better AF system over other aspects. If Pentax is determined that they’ll keeping aiming at landscape photography and occasional daily shooting, they’d better come up with more ultra wide lenses other than just the 11-18 and 15-30. 25mm for 645 was a killer lens yet they discontinued it and never rebooted again. Don’t know why. As for mirrorless bodies, I don’t think they are going to release any before they could give an average usable AF system that could match Sony a7m2
What do you mean better AF? New to using Pentax myself and I find the AF to be very usable from Street, Portrait and Cityscapes under low light conditions when using the K1 and KP. Sure there's always room for improvement and advancement, but at this point I feel if you know your subject and tool being the camera, then what more is needed from the camera company to help you with your work?
TBH better AF is great, however model photography, pentax is excellent. street? excellent. landscape? excellent. I can only think of BIF and sports photography as the downpoints to pentaxs poor AF. Most photography where the photographer is in control. it's more than adequate. think about it. besides. Pentax IQ is some of THE best i've personally experienced.
Im sorry to let you know Jun, there is deception when you read the Fuji spec sheet. The AF, Focus points ,and FPS, just was ..... I will make the video, no spoilers..
@@odemata87 I agree with your Raoul. I will say, when I started this comparison, I was hoping the AF on the Fuji would rock this world, but crazy enough the KP ... Just ... I need to make this damn review asap lol. There is something need to be said and I just dont want to spoil it.
@@Nunez87 Okay I cant hold back. The Fuji didnt do good at all in BIF . It was horrible. Terrible. I will do a review on that first. Yes, I came in thinking fuji is going to rock the world but they failed hard. I even showed my Canon buddy there on site and he was laughing too hard. It was bad. Pentax >Fuji all day for BIF. I also shoot birds as my normal photography so this is something I do. I have to make this video. thanks guys for this conversation! I was going to take a day to break and relax, now I gotta get back in the studio!
Great review as always thanks Cameraville👍I’m looking forward to your lens comparison with the 150-450 having not long purchased the beast. Taken a while to get used to it, having only had the 300 mm prime for over ten years, but now it’s paying dividends! The thing I balk about with mirrorless is the vulnerability of the sensor. I’m an outdoor photographer, often in windy salty locations and having that mirror in front of the sensor is “peace of mind” in my opinion. I’ve never had to clean the sensor yet on my trusty K3 and k3 2 bodies, just flicked up the mirror and a gentle blow an rare occasions! Not so I believe on mirrorless😁
Tony my guy! Im also a huge out door birder so I understand your feeling. I want to tell you here what I found out but I dont want to spoil the next video which is the 150-450. Hang on tight and you wont be disappointed. Im just in mix emotion with a few things but you will see when the video is up! trust me!
You know why I’m switching from the X-T30 to the KP? Ergonomics. That damned Q button is always in the way and even with a grip extension the X-T30 doesn’t feel secure in my hands.
Geoff Chalcraft I have a co worker who also switched to DSLR. In his late 60s. The doc told him to lift weights for his health. He bought a dslr and went out shooting lol. Problem fix lol
I love my Pentax cameras, I also love my Fujifilm x-t3 but to call the results on your last tast as "the same" to me was unbelievable! I had to look it over many times and I've come to the conclusion you're either very buyist toward Pentax or colourblind! On Fujifilm the sky is clear and the clouds are discernable when on the Pentax , yes , you see the houses and everything but really..... The sky is just a grey mush. Again I love both the Pentax and the Fujifilm but please..... calling the results "similar" it seems untrue to me
DannySkateTV Yea, If people want to get into fuji, best to buy Xt20 . I was told from fuji user , best version for price and that q button was position wrong.
Nima Reghabi Excellent. About time someone asked that. It was shot both on the rokinon 14 mm. same aperature. Since it was an k mount adapter to xf there was no electronic communication with the fuji.
Mahmud Farooque No, I didnt go far enough. More of OVF over EVF. Plus A9 sony has been reported to be a split second lag back in time which means the fuji is way beyond a split second in AF acquasition. RIP Evf.
@@theCameraVille Only on continuous burst mode .. if you are talking about professional sports shooting then add shutter speed as well. But we are not talking about K1 shutter speed right now, right?
The rumor says that Pentax in upcoming APS-C will use the same sensor as used in X-T3 / X-T30. Personally I'm hoping that new Pentax flagship (APS-C) will be have the same low light performance and dynamic range as Pentax K1 but with more AF points and better AF in continue mode. This is one reason why I'm hesitate with buying Pentax K1. Strange for me is that so new sensor like in X-T30 has similar performance than old sensor from KP. Do you think that new flagship APS-C can have similar IQ performance in low light as Pentax K1? Another thing that in this movie you turned on highlights compensating for recover highlights for comparision with Fuji image and according to description, this was a RAW file. I thought that highlights / shadow compensating is only for jpg pictures produced by body. Am I wrong?
I get those rumor emails all the time. I got even more detail potential specs than that but I will let Pentax Rumors release the info. Im not a rumor site. lol and also I dont want to be wrong either but sources seems legit.
In away you a proving a point that the current customer is buying the gear based on statistics and number and not a an actual experience. Also when you are buying a camera from an online store it is much easier to settle for less because it is so hard to return in plus there is no real person to talk to. In my opinion this is way people are overpaying for repackaged technology that is missing key futures like IMAGE STABILIZATION in to body GPS and OPTICAL view finder. Also let me tell you something about 400 plus auto focus points. If you have ever used a camera and know how to take a picture you will be surprised that you won't be allowing the camera to choose the focusing point for you you will be the one to do this . I have 27 autofocus points and when it comes to taking pictures I personally only use the one in the centre . Surprising isn't it. This simply because I want to be the one to choose what will be on focus in my picture not the camera. One more detail that people don't understand regardless of how many focus points they are the optics on any camera can only put in a perfect focus only one . So let say that you are trying to take a picture of your family and some people are forward some are more in the back you can only focus on one person he or she will be at perfect focus the rest of the group will be away from the perfect centre. So this is where an experience person will compose his picture correctly by choose an subject in the middle where it will produce more or less even with the rest of the group and reduce the aperture to make his dept of filed wider and retain more people on focus. The point was even with 400 focus points only one of them will be actually on focus and if you don't know what is going on your picture will be less then perfect.I hope this helps .
Yes! I agree with you. All those points is a bit point less when the end user only use a handful. Im on the same boat as you and only use 1 center point. It was quite interesting to see the results because the younger me would go for the new stuff because its better. After this test, I will agree with you, its repackage technology being resold with a different slimmer body. When people start using the camera system, they will realize that most of the time, they are using the most fundamental basics, point and shoot in the center.
All well and good but having more points helps when using fast glass like f1.4 and focussing on the eyes in portraits. The nearer the point to the eye means better accuracy.
That is a good question. I even did a Pentax K1 vs D850 Vs a7riii and I still didnt see any real improvement with a BSI sensor. The industry claims huge difference in noise levels etc but I havent seen one yet.
@@theCameraVille thanks for the reply! Its good to hear that as a KP and D750 owner. The way cameras are marketed it would seem if you dont have the absolute newest technology your gear is no good. I have been very impressed with the KP for astrophotography and low light.
Yes, same here. I get confuse when I keep hearing how great the BSI is and when I do my test, dynamic range test, I dont see anything. One of the youtubers out there was shown my video , he told his live audience he has no comments regarding benefits of BSI. This is more of a marketing strategy for now. In the later future we will see. Thanks for stopping by the channel and the D750 is a nice FF camera as well : )
@@theCameraVille I bought a Pentax Q a couple of weeks ago, the original model from 2011 with the tiny 1/2.3 sensor and 5.5x crop factor. Not the camera to shoot your friend's wedding with, but incredible fun with the Q-lenses and even better with a C-mount adapter. I took some "quick and dirty" close-ups of humblebees on my balkony on the first day and I was blown away by the quality that this little thing could deliver. Certainly not high ISO at that day but pretty impressive anyway.
Wow, a Pentax review and not one mention of the lenses you used. WTF??? The whole reason I bought my Pentax was because the lenses bring out the color more than others. The lens is the only reason to buy a Pentax because their video sucks and there's not many other reasons to choose their platform. Pentax colors, especially in their "limited lens" series really stand out. The only thing I like about Fuji lens is is they are fast, and they are sharp. A little too sharp, like surgically sharp, which might turn some people (like me) off.
Mahadragon Im leading the audience in the series where these same images will appear. Also Fuji lens arent sharp, they left the internal sharpening on default. Cheers.

Great info! Thank you! I'm happy to know that you'll release more videos, I'll be watching them a soon as they are online.
Macros ! Thanks for stopping by! Sorry for the delay reply as well. Im still reviewing these files and will start filming asap.~!
KP also has the option for an extended battery grip.
Yup they do! And gives even more grip.
Very good work, man! Keep on! I am looking forward for what is next!
Good insightful information. Look forward to the telephoto lenses review!
haha! Its the next video~!
Fuji H1 has the 4k video I believe. So if you need the 4K , get the Fuji!
Fuji is doing something in that Xtrans. I am starting to understand why people kept telling me about it. Its a wacky thing to understand.
yes Fuji is cheating all the way - since their first big seller in digital cameras - 6 years ago approximatelly. I don't recall the name of that Fuji, something also with "X" ( by the way - names of all their X models are confusing )
--
So, backthan, the Fuji was looking insanely good at Iso 6400 - almost like every other competitor at that time - at Iso 3200.
--
I can recall - Some of the reporters keep telling in forums and discussions, how Fuji is cheating with Iso Numbers, so naturally it looks quite better - in comparison - with other cameras in Iso tests.
--
I dont like Fuji colors, pics look just unnatural clean, and their cameras are not exiciting for me.
I hear since digital came in manufacturers cheat with iso values to bump specs.
Thank you so much for doing this comparison. I am planning to buy a new camera within 1000 $. I have been confused between these two cameras and Nikon D7200. I am waiting for the other two comparison videos. Hopefully, I will be able to make a call after that.
Get the d7200 for $450 and used $550 for an all around f4 lens and a 35mm 1.8 all for$1k
I wish Ricoh/Pentax updated the firmware as often as Fujifilm does
Christopher Whitson Yea, the 11-18 didnt get it but the K1 did sigh. It happens.
😂😂🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️dont shoot above iso 1600, goes mushy!
If you were to chose between the K3 and KP, could you? And, which one would you chose?
Good stuff.
Good to see you man!
the CameraVille Lol. I shall keep refreshing your page till the videos drop. Keep em coming man. Love your page.
The advantage of owning k-mount lens system
you go Carlos!
@cameraville any settings for video shooting or a cinematic look on pentx kp
Li, which L-bracket do you use for the KP? I've been trying to find one that's short enough so that I have easy access to the battery compartment without having to loosen and move it every time.
thats a good question. I will have to research that!. Which one do you own so far?
Im just in mix emotion with a few things but you will see when the video is up! trust me!
@thecameraville any settings for video shooting or a cinematic look on pentx kp
Great reviews. See you on the other side back at Pentax once you miss the colours, analogue and build.
You and me both!
Good review. I am still considering a Kp just had some other priorities.
That happens. Not to worry. Im documenting everything as I go since others havent.
@Thecameraville How do i set the white Balance to custom that can be used anytimeon the Kp
You know why I’m switching from the X-T30 to the KP? Ergonomics. That damned Q button is always in the way and even with a grip extension the X-T30 doesn’t feel secure in my hands.
Gaston Mannlicher lol.. yup. That q button was very strange. I dont have big hands but its so annoying lol.
Gaston how has you switch been to the Pentax KP from Fujifilm? Curious because I'm thinking of moving from mirrorless to the Pentax KP
And...... the Pentax KP is helping me build my biceps! As it stands, ready for action, with a 50mm Sigma lens, it's 1.4kg. (about 3lb)
Again I love both the Pentax and the Fujifilm but please..... calling the results "similar" it seems untrue to me
Well you got to swallow the pill sir. I am hated in the Pentax world lol.
Great review. Love it. I have a fuji xt20 but the Pentax is holding it down. Subscribed
DannySkateTV Yea, If people want to get into fuji, best to buy Xt20 . I was told from fuji user , best version for price and that q button was position wrong.
Pentax k70 is good enough for me...fuji maybe later
Another great video. Thank You !
Welcome! thank you for dropping by!
On your test screen for "Summer Hot Day!" sample photo, Can I ask which lens are you using on the Fuji? it's just an off aperture (f1.0) and @ 22mm!
Just feels like a big portion of this comparison which is the lens on the body has been skipped?!
Nima Reghabi Excellent. About time someone asked that. It was shot both on the rokinon 14 mm. same aperature. Since it was an k mount adapter to xf there was no electronic communication with the fuji.
OVF is Better than EVF ... You didn't had to go that far. You love Pentax, we get it.
Pentax:
Best image quality but
Worst marketing and hype
lol yup
I think it mostly boils down to a matter of personal preference.
You can say that about any review actually so.... .... ....
Great review and comparison! I would love to see that pentax gear price here in Europe
Yikes!
I heard that one before.!
Fun comparison!
Its always nice to compare dslr to a mirrorless or even with a Pentax which dont get enough love out there.
Love the review!!!
Not a problem Hariz!
How about the auto focus?
I am recording the video !
You didn't do any autofocus or buffer tests
allan hong Its in the following videos with the lenses. Check the library. 3 sets.
What is the benefit of a BSI sensor if the KPs standard sensor can keep up with it in terms on noise?
Thanks for stopping by the channel and the D750 is a nice FF camera as well : )
Marketing, I suppose :)
I miss pentax so much...
same
Exellent review!
thank you for stopping by!
Pentax for me.
solid choice
Hai li, new pntax will come :) hehe.. new review
On it my dude!
@@theCameraVille Awesome and Love to hera tht :)
Cheers.
Popping sound is annoying.
Bob Norgren sounds fine to me. Been doing it for 3 years mate!
wish the pentax had better video
same, I would still be using the kp if it had the videos of a fuji
That pop noise has to stop never ever do it again.
Good luck, 100 videos of mine will have that. It will continue in 2021. Buckle your seat belt.
@@theCameraVille Well I did not subscribe specifically because of that noise, and I see I made the right decision, as no doubt 20 thousand others did. Congrats!
Hey, nice video. Can you do a comparison with X-H1? I think KP and X-H1 are much closer.
Hajime Yamasaki Vukelic That was my first choice but that camera cost more than x-t30 and kp. I was aiming for close to equal pricing.
Cheers.
@@theCameraVille I see. That makes sense. Though, comparison with X-H1 would have been even more interesting. :)
That "pop" sound is irritating. Drivers my ears crazy. I had to stop watching.
Paul Gucio Nice!
I find it great, it saves me having to do it myself.
It’s X-T30, not XT-30 🖖😘
dslr is already history, dead … this kp camera will be worth next to nothing when you decide to sell it … why ? cause now nobody wants a dslr already ! mirror box is a prehistoric tech
Kai Zen False. You already fooled yourself. Why? cause when you mentioned nobody , that means zero which is false. Dont get upset when your high iso sucks and your colors are out of wack. Actually, you should read your own fujifulm rumor editors, they also mentioned the same issue on fuji. Ouch lol.. That was a week ago. prehistoric lol. Dont bring that weak statement over here.
