  • I've been trying to get my hand on this camera for over a year and it's FINALLY happened! So why would anyone want a DSLR in 2019? I don't know, but here's my first impressions of the rather stunning Pentax KP.

      @@sdhute I have the KP it is awesome camera, you can customize everything and the image quality is better than my previous Sony a6xxx series. The dynamic range is great, you can recover so much information from the raw files. But don't expect video performance or eye tracking.

      @@sdhute I switched from mirrorless (Sony + Fuji) to Pentax. If you're a photographer, OVF is the way to go. No regrets. Very happy with the K-1 and old AF film era lenses.

    I love the large 100% optical viewfinder. It’s pure, clear, and beautiful compared to an EVF or LCD. For this reason alone, I see DSLRs continuing because they can offer an experience mirrorless cannot.
    Which is not to say that mirrorless also offers it’s own set of advantages.

  • @christopherward5065
    @christopherward5065 4 года назад +8

    The image quality is outstanding and it is incredibly configurable. Pentax is very particular about what it makes and you have to decide whether it will do what you want. There is a new APSC body in their pipeline with more of the things that professionals like. Bigger battery, dual card slots etc. But the KP is no slouch it has much of its DNA from Pentax’s K1 and that means it’s a serious tool. Its image quality is amongst the best. You can get going with vintage glass stretching back to the Takumars and there are dedicated lenses for all sorts of purposes. The dynamic range and tonal discrimination are superb. The KP is a lot of camera and utterly relevant.

      I also am a K70 owner, the only reason Id go mirrorless is the weight savings. I wish they make a K70 sized body with all the tech of a KP. However, I do love the K70

    I love being able to swap between my K1000 and K-1 with the same lenses. I also had a K-3, and that is a killer camera for the price (if you're into landscape and appreciate weather sealing, tough build, great IQ). Not for everyone, but great for some people! (Especially on a budget!)

    I just bought one like 4 days ago. The main reason was the weather sealing. I enjoy taking pictures on nature hikes, but I live in Costa Rica so that means lots of rain. Also Pentax has a good assortment of weather sealed lenses, no point to having a camera that's weather sealed if the lens can't take it.

      Wo~I went to Costa Rica once. I really like Costa Rica specifically the Playa Manuel Antonio!! There is a stunning view! Anyway, I'm a KP user either. I was only carrying with 21mm f3.2 & 50-135mm f2.8 with me. But I used 21mm f3.2 most time. I think 21mm it's not wide enough, so I took panorama a lot. There are sooooooo beautiful! I have a mirrorless Sony A7ii and the biggest thing I don't like about it is that the viewfinder is tires my eyes out. Feels like when I've been staring at my computer screen too long at work. So I do like the optical viewfinders, personally. I know enough to know when to adjust exposure compensation up or down so I'm not sure I see enough of a benefit for an electronic viewfinder.
    My priorities are weather sealing (I like outdoor activities and I like to travel) and I really like having Shake Reduction. I also want to have aps-c and full frame options. So that's where Pentax for me has been a good fit.
    I also appreciate their many high quality small primes, some AF, some not. Worth of special note is their FA77 f1.8 Limited (full frame and aps-c), k20 f4 (ff and aps-c) and their HD DA35 f2.8 Macro (aps-c). Just great lenses that are about the size of the 50mm that you were using in this review. In the affordable weather resistant lens area, I like the DA16-85 and da55-300 PLM for apsc and the dfa28-105 is really good on full frame. All in all, the amount of lenses you can get for the Pentax is pretty large especially considering all the legacy k mount and m42 lenses there are, and keep in mind, these are all stabilized.
    Overall, the Pentax ecosystem has a lot of options and some unique advantages, whether we're talking about mirrorless or DSLR. Ultimately, IMO, it comes down to the camera and the important features it has and how the camera feels as a tool and for me, the KP has been a really good fit. Yes, I wish it had dual cards, built in GPS, a larger buffer but these are nice-to-haves not deal breakers for me.

  • @StrangelyIronic
    @StrangelyIronic 2 года назад

    It's 2022 and I picked up a KP around a year or so ago to basically go with my fairly extensive vintage Pentax K/M42 collection and haven't been disappointed one bit. I actually sold my Fuji APS-C cameras and have stuck with my trinity of either a Pentax Q7 or Lumix GM1 for my pocket/super crop cameras, an Olympus E-M1 Mark II for a heavy duty MFT I was using full time, and relatively recently the KP for my APS-C camera that I've used so much with my Pentax setup, old and new (the limited lenses are mint), that I sold my X-T30 that I used previously as my APS-C camera.
    I don't mind the extra weight and size wise it's virtually the same as my E-M1 mkii when adapting lenses. I've been using mirrorless for years now with the introduction of the E-M5 and then on to Fuji for the film sims. Mirrorless is the future, there's fewer moving parts among a lot of other positives. For a standard eye piece style viewfinder for an SLR I don't really see any advantage of the OVF over a relatively modern EVF (outside of battery draw). The resolution is high enough, the processors these days eliminate most lag, and the information you get is extremely useful. That said, I don't mind going purely off the back screen on my Q7 or GM1 when out and about, so I'm not exactly attached to any particular setup. I love OVF's with rangefinders, but that's a different matter. As a Pentax fan you're limited to DSLR's unless you want to use the brick (K-01, which as many people like to hate it, I've gotten some great results out of mine...even if the formfactor is pretty atrocious for actual use).

    I just ordered a KP in Japan and can‘t wait to get it in my hands. It will complement my K-1, which is the greatest camera I have ever owned. The only downside to the K-1 is size and weight, especially when you plan to travel lightly.

  • @jamesmlodynia8757
    @jamesmlodynia8757 4 года назад

    The Pentax KP works well when you need a smaller camera for travel, hiking or any other time when a smaller body comes in handy, the controls are some of the best that Pentax have to date in their smaller bodies, the battery grip that you can add allows the use of longer lens use and more shooting time, allows better grip if you have larger hands, easy to remove when you want to go back to a smaller body. The camera shines with Pentax small limited prime glass or a lens like Sigma 17-70 F 2.8-4 or the Sigma 17-50 mm F 2.8.

    My next Camera will be a KP70 by Pentax. I love Pentax image reproduction and I also love the fact that you can use any Pentax Lens even 30 years old vintage lenses because the old mount and the new mount is the SAME MOUNT. Pentax, unlike many other camera companies, didnt change their mounts. No adapter needed. This signifigantly reduces cost when thinking about camera bodies and lenses combined for your photography needs.

    All spotmatics had 1/1000 top shutter speed ? The SP1000 had same meter as Spotmatic SP. The only difference is lack of self timer of on SP1000. The 50mm f1.4 had thorium melted into glass it was not a coating . The yellow haze can be removed and lens brought back to factory with a UV light, it was not intended to look like that also the yellowing will rob the glass of 1 full f stop unless removed.

    The question is not really DSLRs vs Mirrorless,because they really serve two different masters.I mean,you dont throw away your Ford F250 truck because you bought a Camry afterwards.There's this misconception and outright lie,that you have to choose brands and formats,and only use one.It's perfectly fine and logical,to bring the Pentax KP,one more lens,and then have a Fuji GFX 50R,and you will conver ALL the bases,especially if someone wants you to do some wedding,family event,or corporate work.I shoot with the Pentax K1Mk2,and I feel in love with it,plus i have to deal with NONE of the current issues with many mirrorless cameras.Let me explain..I have full frame,Sony sensor,low light,2 card slots,IBIS great battery,fully sealed ports,astro shooting,Pixel shift,and even 4k internal,plus the lens,strap,clutch,SD cards,flash,for less than $3000.In contrast,the Nikon D850 is also a MONSTER like that,yet their Nikon Z7 costs more than mine and right under the D850 price,for a crippled camera.Poor focus,bad battery life in comparison,one card slot,etc,etc.Tghat's exactly why I ONLY would consider a mirrorless that has ALL the features i already have and more.

    You mention being better than peaking around 6mins... it has Peaking as well, if that's your jam (the only non-mirrorless company to do that, since the K-01 I think). I think the size is crazy, how they've fit such features in a DSLR that is smaller than almost every mirrorless. I don't have KP, but love my K-3 and FF K-1.

      The outline peaking is the best peaking I've used as well. Win win!

      Nikon D850 also has focus peaking, but that's it as DSLR competition goes...

      Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Pentax's peaking is only available in live view, right?

    • @courtlandFDouglas
      @courtlandFDouglas 5 лет назад +1

      @@discoverBR yes that is correct. The viewfinder is only Optical, so the peaking would not show up on the viewfinder... So only in LiveView then

    Thumbs down for saying its a thorium coating on the super takumar 50 1.4, it's not, it's in the glass, there is no such thing as a thorium coating and for saying that it comes with a 16-55mm kit lens. it's not, it's 18-55, there is no such thing as a 16-55 Pentax kit lens. If you are going to review gear at least know wtf you are talking about.

    why buy this when the fuji X-T3 is a thing? very happy with my X-T3. sold my pentax last week, i will never look back. perhaps the yet to be announced pentax k-1000 mark ii 100th anniversary mirrorless full frame camera will ABSOLUTELY get my money back... due to their namesake forums' collectivist-zombie group-think anti-mirrorless ignorant perspective, i couldn't stick with the brand. the cameras are nothing special anymore, and their modern glass is trash. pentax forums is a totally misinformed echo chamber of toxic photographers, the majority of them take mediocre photographs.
    don't get me wrong, i still love ALL my pentax film cameras and lenses - i have about as many as you or more actually; but the company can't make a dslr that is worth soaking money into at the moment... nevertheless, shout out to canadian camera retailers!!

    Waiting on Pentax to up the ante can be very depressing. When in God’s name would they release a capable video camera that at least does 4K or 1080p 60fps with auto focus.
    I’ve had a K3 and a K1 for years now and I’m desperately looking for anyone to take them off me so I can move to Fuji. Pentax doesn’t seem to be a company that is innovative. They have no desire to take the lead - they almost seem content with being years behind the competition. Make no mistake though, for photography alone Pentax is great but times have changed and so has my needs. Every camera needs to have good video in this era.

      Agreed. The more I use this thing the more I wish it shot decent 1080 with continuous af.

      I'd say that nobody should be waiting on Pentax to catch up to the competition spec wise. IMO, the longer a person can afford to wait for a company to catch up the less likely they actually need what they are waiting for.
      I really like my KP and I would have liked for it to do better video, but video is just not my main focus. I'm also 'old school' in my thinking that it just isn't a good idea for a single device to be performing every duty. If my business depended on me being able to snap professional photos and take professional video, I wouldn't want to chance that one accident would keep me from making a living.
      In this era, we actually have an embarrassment of competent devices, but it is hard to capture mindshare with just a competent device. Pentax deserves to get praise for what it does right but the company usually just gets chewed up and torn apart for not being whatever is currently dominating SEO.
