    Had pain in neck due to a bone spur in the C3. Gabapentin worked great. Then I started memory loss, first with stuff like misplacing my keys, forgetting items from the grocery store. Then I forgot my pin code at the teller machine. When I had a doctor appt and forgot where the office was, I knew there was a problem. Told my doctor and he weaned me off the drug gradually. My memory returned and all was well. Great for pain, but bad side effects. Never again.

    Nice job doc I have had 4 spine operations over the past 18 years busted up nyc firefighter. And pain and not being able to walk with out meds is no joke and there is such a move to not give people pain meds now it making people who live with real pain not have what they need to live. Drug abusers will always get drugs taking meds from people that need them is like taking legal guns from upstanding people thinking criminals cant get them then. No criminals always get guns all your doing is making the people that dont abuse gun rights eady victims.I love all these doctors now that tell prople who live in real pain just take Tylenol that crap cant fix a bug bite. To the doctor tbat just says suck it up or just deal with it I would say how about you go a few rounds with Tyson and lets see what your looking to take, that is if one of his punches doesn't break your neck first. I have been taking gabapentin for years. Three times a day 400 mg. My pain is still there. My doctor lets me take a low dose opioid that helps a lot. I don’t abuse it. I really don’t think that gabapentin works for me. I have tried multiple drugs for years. Recently they wanted me to go to spine and wellness people.
    I refused because I had gone to them in the past and they gave me injections in the back that did nothing. I sure wish I could feel 100% better.

      Yes, everyone is different and 600 mg is not an unusual dosage for a lumbar radiculopathy. Just remember that the gabapentin is a pain medication and isn't fixing the underlying problem so ideally you could be working on fixing the underlying problem, for example via exercises, while using the medication to help control the symptoms. I have been on gabapentin for about five years and they do say that one of the side effects could be weight gain. For me, it starts about an hour after I take my nightly dose and I crave carbs. It can’t be a salad. It can’t be anything but carbs. I have gained, 15 pounds of the 70 I originally lost. So now I’m back to trying to lose the weight again. But, on the other hand, I sleep through the night without waking up in excruciating pain. For me, the trade-off is worth it.

    Great explanation of garbapentin!
    Dr, I am having severe allergies in my entire right leg, and also in my left calf down to my feet. I have been going to the clinic for treatment as it comes and goes fairly often.each time a different doctor would see me and most times their prescribed medication for me differ somewhat. I went to the clinic again today as the same allergy violently erupted. I was given two injections by a nurse at the request of the doctor who saw me: Prednisolone injection and hydrocortisone injection. The doctor was very abrupt and did not tell me what the injections were for, or if I am on any prior medications or even if I have had vaccines recently. My questions are: 1) what are these two injections for, and which by the way were administered in the same hole. Are there any risks involved? 2) I am currently taking Garbapentin 300 mg nightly for the last 7 years as I suffer with SEVERE BURNING, PAIN, FATIGUE, PINS AND NEEDLES IN MY ENTIRE UPPER AND LOWER LIMBS AND HANDS AND FEET, as I am told by the doctors in the Neurology Clinic that I have neuropathy ( without requesting any proper blood or other relevant tests to determine what is causing this 'so-called' diagnosis! Are there any reactions between Garbapentin and the two steroid injections mentioned earlier? 3) because of some memory loss I am experiencing, I personally, without consultation of my junior doctors who are the ones that always attend to me, decided to reduce the nightly dosage of 300mg I'm currently taking by cutting it in half and taking only 1/2 capsule each night instead. How bad is doing that. Thanks doctor.

    Every time I get myself a doctor that knows what he is doing everyone wants to chime in and critique the prescriptions. I’ve been on gabapentin since 2010. I’ve had neck surgeries and without gabapentin my left leg will feel like a hot iron is stuck on my thigh. It’s ridiculous at the times I’ve been taken off just to be put back on. It’s not habit forming, there is no withdrawal. Mind your own business and leave others alone.

      I just got a pinched nerve two weeks ago, out of nowhere, it seems, basic one in my upper neck going down my left shoulder to arm, wrist, etc., nothing mysterious,
      and the main orthopedist I got automatically gave me Gabapentin and a muscle relaxer. That's standard. The thing is I had acute night pain there, and he
      gave me nothing for that, even after I told everyone, ER MDs, nurses, and the orthopedist, about that. That's what led me to two ER visits last week. Anyway,
      nothing more than a pinched nerve was wrong with me. That's the good thing! The bad thing is how stupidly the whole thing was treated and prescribed
      by a supposed specialist. Not very well. I communicated just fine. I found that treating nerve pinch or pain with basic OTC painkillers is NOT effective,
      because, nerve pain is different, and stuff like Alleve that can get rid of low level muscle or ache pain, back pain, even, will not help nerve pain much, and,
      sometimes not at all. I never had nerve pain before so I had no idea. They gave me Prednisone finally, three days ago, and THAT automatically worked,
      and got rid of the nightly terrible arm pain from it within an hour of taking it, all night! So that's what the MD should have given me in association with
      the other two meds, in the first place. But I just didn't know to ask for it. Gabapentin takes days or weeks to be effective, also.

      Thank you for your comment, Julia. I would just caution you to remember that Lyrica is the same basic class of medication as Neurontin. If you really need a nerve pain medication, it may be worth discussing with your doctor other classes of medication such as a tricyclic anti-depressant or something like Cymbalta. Both of those have their own issues to be sure but they are different classes of medication from Neurontin and Lyrica. Then again, trying Lyrica might be the right move as long as you do it slowly and watch it carefully. Obviously only you and your doctor can answer that question together. But I do wish you the best of luck with your path.

My doctor told me to ween myself off but did not tell me how much at a time so I’m doing it myself. My brain fog has eased up a lot. But my back pain has not. I’m 70.

    I asked the doctor for some Gabapentin and they gave me 300 mg pills that could not be cut in half. I called the doctor back to get 100 mg to start off as I never taken it before and I'm sensitive to Medicine. The doctor never called the pharmacy within 100 Megs request and at 3:00 in the morning I was in so much pain I took the 300 mg. it did nothing for me but give me a headache that lasted for 4 days upset stomach and dry mouth. I heard they made a Gabapentin cream so I requested that from my dermatologist for my shingles rash. They have to mix it up and I won't get it till Monday but I will update when I get it.

    Im 44 in good health for the most part. fit. I developed a weird nerve pain 3 years ago. It only happens when I turn my head to the right and talk. happens maybe 1/100 times. when it happens its a intense shock pain in right neck from jaw, ear area down to bottom neck. comes and goes in 2 seconds but it really hurts and scares me. The mri showed a very small spur on c5 . I get anxiety with this even tho it doesnt happen all to often. I find myself avoiding talking when I turn my head to the right to avoid it potentially happening. Neurologist advice was to gain some weight as some fat may help insulate nerve?

      Thank you for your question, Ethan. 100% I would agree with what you wrote -- the best way to think of pain medications...or maybe I should say that the ideal way that pain medications can be used is to control the pain while the underlying condition is being addressed. There is a quote that I like that I have seen attributed to Voltaire who apparently said: The art of medicine is entertaining people while nature takes its course. I'm not sure I agree with that sentiment but like any good quote, there is a kernel of truth. Time does heal a lot of problems and so sometimes the best thing is to control the pain while nature heals us. Ideally, we take a more active role in getting ourselves better and work on the underlying issues with a doctor and with exercise, etc. The only caveat I would offer with something like gabapentin is that when it comes to nerves, you want to make sure that you aren't covering up a problem while the underlying problem gets worse. That is, if you are taking gabapentin (or any medication) and the nerve pain is much better but then you start noticing numbness and weakness, then this is a big problem as it means the nerve is getting worse even though you have the pain controlled and so that nerve needs to be urgently addressed in a different way. Remember, gabapentin doesn't do anything to the underlying condition, it just makes the pain better. So a nerve can feel less pain while it becomes more impinged and less healthy. I think this is generally unusual but it does happen and it's important to keep in mind, particularly when thinking about nerve issues.

    • @ethancowart6765
      @ethancowart6765 2 года назад +2

      @@PrincetonSpineJointCenter thank you for the reply . That helped . So you don’t think that by taking gabapentin that by having a calming effect on the nerves and even for anxiety. That by feeling more relaxed or it possibly even helping with improved sleep. That by sleeping better and feeling less stressed that it could help the body recover faster from the nerve damage or any of the issues that I’m working on?

    • @PrincetonSpineJointCenter
      @PrincetonSpineJointCenter  2 года назад +4

      @@ethancowart6765 Ethan, that is a very interesting point. You raise the question if by reducing pain and allowing for a more normal quality of life with sleep, etc, as well as better movement because of a lack of pain, could that in and of itself be therapeutic? That’s a fair thought and we guess my response would be it seems plausible, particularly in an acute episode of pain. What’s important to realize, when it comes to gabapentin, is that the medication itself isn’t “curing” the nerve of anything. With that said, not sleeping makes things worse. Not moving well makes things worse. So a medication that helps with those things could in an indirect way offer a therapeutic boost, I think. But I think it’s a bit dangerous to rest to heavily on that idea to the extent that it allows us to become complacent and “rely upon” the medication. However, as an intellectual exercise, yes I think it’s plausible.

    I searched decades for something to put me to sleep and found gabapentin.It energizes me until I lay still then it will putt me out.This will go well for a 3rd month until I go cold turkey you can barely breathe or get out of bed.Your joints hurt and thoughts come from parallel realities(you don"t feel you're in this life,you missed the last train and now you can barely breathe move or eat.Your teeth grind in your sleep caused by the muscle relaxant.You get severe depression that's biggest problem.Just minus one pill a day till you only take 2or3 at a time.Then you can quit without much agony.Just zero sleep for 3days then you have to find a similar drug to keep their tolerance levels down.If you stayed on gabapentin long enough twitchy sensations.yawning cracking Jaws,etc Would just increase.The slower taper off the longer the withrawls.If you go cold turkey after having been taking 8at a time you be on the verge of an ER visit.You need to be down to two pills before you quit.Otherwise you'll be in that nightmarish state watching infomercials all night till you can get another prescription and give the other a break.
