I'm 45, was diagnosed 8 years ago. Eight years ago I could walk 2 miles no problem. Now I can't walk a half a mile without being in pain to the point where I can almost not walk at all. I can't stand for long periods of time anymore either. An hour on the floor means 3 hours I can barely move. The pain wraps around to my hips too. If people who have DDD have no back pain, they should absolutely consider themselves the lucky ones.
You are right that the ones without pain are indeed the lucky ones. I'm sorry to hear of your pain. There are lots of treatment paths that you could follow and I'm sure you've explored some. I would just encourage you to make sure you have a great spine doctor and then be sure to have a clear and open dialogue to develop a treatment path with clear goals. If one treatment path doesn't work out for you, find another. And try to make good, therapeutic supervised exercises a part of whatever path you choose.
Consult disc replacement surgeons in Germany, I had 2 level lumbar 3 weeks ago, best decision i ever made! I was touring Portugal on day 12! Been struggling for decades, I'm also 45..
See here’s the thing…when you have a physician who is very knowledgeable in this area but not familiar with the excruciating pain, the lack of empathy is absolutely discouraging.
Working in insurance claims, I’ve seen hundreds of patients get low back fusions. I’ve yet to have a single patient tell me it cured their back or leg pain.
Thank you for the he explanation! I’m in pain 24/7. I’m 59 and I’ve been diagnosed with DDD since 2013; but now the pain is 24/7 . L4 L5 S1 also artrose . I’ve tried everything under the sun and no success. This pain take my hope and peace away. 😢
Oh my, I’m so sorry dear, you sound like me, a cyst was found on my spine in 2012, it had to be removed to prevent paralysis. The surgery was done in 2013, then I was told I have spinal stenosis, I had to resign from nursing. I’m in pain 24/7 as well, I’m thxful that I’m a Christian because Jesus gives me peace & strength to cope with it all. I’ll surely keep you in prayer🙏🏽🔥
I was diagnosed with kyphosis and scoliosis as a teenager, diagnosed with DDD and arthritis in my early 20’s. At 23 I was told I had the back of a 65 year old. Unable to afford health insurance until this past year, at 32 I found out I technically I’ve had Scheuermann’s disease. I’m 33. I am constantly in pain from my conditions so hearing that other people have DDD with no pain baffles me. I’ve multiple herniated discs and I wish my doctor had taken me more seriously when I started to complain of low back pain and showed concern over a hump in my back at 13, he said for me to wait until I had my growth spurt.. so at 16 I found out if I had seen the specialist sooner I may have been able to have a brace to help my condition but that never happened. I hate how crippling the pain can be, it’s taken so much away from me that I enjoyed doing. All of y’all who don’t have to deal with this are so blessed.
I had a primary doctor for years and came to her with my symptoms and family history of bone problems. She flat out told me it was up to her to order tests and she didn’t see a reason looking at me at the appointment to order anything 😂 I’ve been in pain for at least 5 years and it’s gotten worse. Finally found out I have at least one bone spur and ddd. I have an mri soon. I am gonna write a complaint about my old doctor.
I'm 42 in 95' i was 15 and got diagnosed with ankylosingspondiltes and Psoriatic Arthritis I have severe DDD . I've had 3 major spinal surgeries all failed. I now have a crushed nerve in L5 , S1 is no better. I had a PLIF at L5 S1 and well the majority of it was ripped out and the rod's were bent because of a fall comings out of the hospital so ya this has ruined my life if you want me to be honest it's all day pain unless you know what I'm talking about it's really hard to understand. I'm on Enbrel and it does make a difference but I went to school to become a gas fitter so that's not happening and without any family or money life is not life you just exist. Although I am looking into going back to school to become an outreach worker and focus on helping the youth . ...thanks for reading my story.....Cheer's !
😮 iv was under painclinic for approx 13yrs , iv got lumber sacral plexus injury also underlying spondilithesis, had brilliant pain consultant, in Bristol, had nerveblocks cortisone 💉 injections, but since he's retired, I have to take around the clock cocodomols duluxetine and amitriptyline, was told I'd never walk again, and they were wright, can only walk short distances, I'm in 🏥 hospital next week, and have to use my wheelchair for all the long corridors, iv been and still am, in daily chronic agony, but iv to live with it, accept it, iv been told, but it's hard for all of us back pain sufferers😢😢,, love to all back pain sufferers❤❤❤❤❤❤❤from jayne walton, of bristol, your a lovely man, but it's not so easy for painsuferers to be so😊 and positive.
I was recently diagnosed with stenosis and DDD in my upper spine because my right arm went numb. So I am only recently trying to figure out if the pain I’ve had off and on (more recently on) is related to the DDD. Neither an internist nor a orthopedic surgeon even tried to help me understand what you’ve explained very clearly here. Both basically told me there’s nothing I can do but wait and see if other symptoms show up. Thank god for you and this video. I’m going to explore the facet joint issue further. What a shame I have to go to the internet for more personalized explanation and info from a doc I’ve never met than the ones in real life. But I am grateful for you.
I'm 29. I was diagnosed with DDD 2 1/2 yrs ago. I was in constant agony. Physical Therapy saved me. Within 6 months I had virtually no pain. Now I continue to do those exercises regularly to keep my back healthy on top of walking and strength training to keep the rest of me healthy.
@@richradtylr4 my best friend has it too. Same age. She has to get injections. My doctor said 30% of people my age have it but like the video said most don’t have severe pain like I did
Being 72 yoa and beginning my spinal education with a diagnosis of L5 defects at 11 yoa, corrective fusion at 19 yoa, attempted correction of a broken fusion at 22 yoa, You did an excellent job of presenting an excellent high level comprehensive overview of possible causes and corrections. Major changes have happened in this area of medicine through the years and I really wish I had run into someone such as yourself to provide an explanation of what was possible at any specific time during my journey. An accident in 2005 damaged the disc at T12-L1 and the only options I could find at the time were, live with the pain until you can't, then we can fuse the spine from T12 down, due to the condition of other lumbar joints. NO THANK YOU. An MRI in 2015, prior to implanting a spinal cord stimulator, revealed why I never lost mobility in my low back, a sixth lumbar vertebra. So for those recently falling into the rabbit hole of spinal problems, trust the doctors they have many options today, Keep your core muscles strong and if they recommend physical therapy, do it. If it reaches the point where surgery is suggested, get additional opinion(s) just to be sure that is the best option. Do what your doctor tells you to do, or not do. So as I ride into the sunset on my motorcycle, the journey continues, if you fall/fail, get up, NEVER GIVE UP.
That's very kind of you to say. You are correct that spinal medicine, and our understanding of the spine and how it causes pain has greatly evolved in just the last 20 or 30 years and it continues to evolve. The good news is that it's never too late to try and make things better. You've clearly been through a lot but I would still encourage you to consider talking with a doctor about maybe working with a new physical therapist to build on some strength and mobility to help you along your path.
@@PrincetonSpineJointCenter Thank you for the encouragement. I now have a newly implanted stimulator that allows MRIs again. Scheduled for Thursday, the journey continues.
I'm 45 and had a laminectomy of the L4-L5 two years ago. My neurologist surgeon said my MRI looked so bad that if I didn't get the surgery that I would become a paraplegic and it definitely felt like it too. I've now gotten about 65% of my strength back that I had before the back problems. The pain is gone, but I still need to be careful about limiting twisting and bending because the joints on either side of the fused joint will wear out quicker.
I’m unfortunately glad to see so many of you going through the same as me. Doctors had me feeling crazy saying I was fine, all these years and 4 MRIs later now diagnosed at 35 but have been dealing with pain since I was 23
I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in L5S4 in 1995 when I was 30. It didn’t give me much problems unless I carried heavy items for a long time when it would ache a bit. In 2006 I was working and it became bone on bone and I had extreme pain shooting down my spine by the end of the shift. I got X-rays and the Degenerative Discs had multiplied to include the L4 & L3. And the L5 & L4 were bone on bone. I was able to quit that job soon afterwards and started healing by using an inversion table. I started taking glucosamine/chondroitin daily and still stretching daily. I felt better as the years have gone by. I had started going to a pain management Dr and getting a shot in my sciatic nerve in 2016 and in 2019 I was in a bone breaking car accident. I didn’t have any back pain and my traumatized body couldn’t do much for four months and when I was cleared 6 months later I started doing more and ended up with an aching back again. I went to a chiropractor where they took X-rays and the results were astonishing it showed my disks had fused with what looked like new disks. I was still taking the glucosamine/chondroitin daily, stretching and using the inversion table at least weekly. I’m still doing better.
So you think the glucosamine/condrointin might have allowed them to rebuild? My geneticist told me to take it & I have a bottle in the drawer. My disc got damaged in a work accident and I’m desperate.
I’ve literally just been diagnosed with this and it sucks… I am keen cyclist and always been very active, but years of sitting for work and doing sports has taken its toll clearly, had many adventures planned but feel like they have been crushed now. I’m 31 and it’s set my depression and anxiety off bad. Hopefully can come through it but struggling right now. Appreciate the video and information definitely has helped. Also to know it can happen at any age
If its not due to trauma, you may me acidic. Try changing your diet for a couple of months. Going on a all fruit diet. Then take Vitamin C, collagen and copper minerals. Watch your iron in the process. And lastly, get a Xray and or MRI done b4 you start and after so that you can track your progress. I do understand MRI is costly 🙃
i know what ya mean whenb it comes to the depression and anxiety i feel like as a man my ability to work and provide and my usefulness has been stripped away from me.
Can't thank you enough for explaining what isn't explained here in UK why can't our Dr's just inform as you have done? I'm in need of a miracle your information has helped immensely gratitude.
In the UK NHS doctors are lazy and they don't want to explain. I found one only doctor paid by my health insurance that he told me u can do it with anti-inflammatory and exercise. The rest wanted to inject a spinal God knows what though a hole in my back, I said jo thank you now I have pain but manageable. Hope you are feeling better now mate.
I like how you explain the degenerative disc disease so well and make it very simple to comprehend. You managed to make me understand my spine issues in a very short time. Marvelous work, thank you !!
I was diagnosed with this 18 years ago. It actually got better when I was pregnant. Over 18 years I have had 6 surgeries and am fused from L3 to L5 S1 and from C2 to T1. The last injury I lost ability to use my fingers and hands, my toes and walking, numbness and pins and needles and Cauda Equina syndrome, humiliating. Spent 9 days in hospital, they didn't think I would walk or use my arms in full. I made myself relearn it all. Except my bladder, it still won't release.
My still living father who is almost 97 has never once had back pain. For the most part, he walks without a cane, and when he does its because he's getting more frail not in pain. On no medication whatsoever. It must be in his genes that he has done so well for so long.
Was he ever involved in a car smash in where a a truck ran into the rear of your car and smashed his spine? Wish I had his genes, you must be so lucky.
That's fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I'm sure his genes have something to do with it, as does luck, and hopefully so does exercise and good nutrition :). Whatever he is doing, keep it up!
My grandpa is the same age and he looks like he's in his late 70s and walks fine and just living life. But he's been smoking Marijuana since he was in his 20s. I'm thinking maybe that has something to do with it.
Very useful, thank you! I'm one of those people who, at age 60, had a CT scan for something else and then was told I have "severe degenerative disc disease" in my L5 although I have no pain. Your video gave me much more information, in a clear way, than other information I've found. (And I hope you keep up the corny jokes... magic pill... haha. I was folding laundry and turned back to the screen, "Wait. What??")
Thank you so much for making this video. I am 74 and going through this myself.I have been having back pain for years but it has just now started going through this decision. I see a surgeon in June. I do not want a fusion but my life now is setting in a chair all day. I also have idiopathic Neuropathy I can do the exercises myself, I have been through physical therapy, had nerve blocks, steroid injections, spinal cord stimulator but all this was many years ago, I am going to do fusion as last resort. I have taken some pretty strong opiods over the years and I guess that masked the back pain. I have gotten off of the meds I was taking and now the pain is horrible. I don't want to spend what time I have left setting in a chair but I am very stressed about being put under as I have congestive heart, high and low blood pressure. Your explanation was so helpful I have a big decision to make after seeing the surgeon, In the meantime I will be exercising with the best exercises for my core Barbara
Thanks for your information, I am a Vietnam veteran Served with the 82nd I was diagnosed with a degenerative discussing the doctor told me that l might need surgery.
I had a laminectomy/discectomy, because I had spinal stenosis last fall of 2021. I got hit from behind in the car at a light. No damage to the car. No pain, until almost two months doing spring yard clean up. Experienced leg pain and sciatica in the buttocks and both hamstring. The more I walked the more pain. I had pressure on my nerve in the back, which caused the leg pain. Sitting felt better. I tried therapy for awhile. Not too much relief. I had to do therapy also after surgery four weeks later to strengthen up my back. I need to keep doing them regularly though. Slacking off sometimes and I can tell or improper posture sitting. I felt so much better after surgery. No more leg pain or sciatica. I'm not a pain pill person only after surgery for a few weeks only. You're right. It's not a cure. I'm 60 years old and stood up for 33 years at a physical job. Takes a toll on different parts of your body too. Thanks. Nice video
Lisa I had the same thing but I got Spinal Fusion for my L4 L5 and S1. I will be 70 and now I can do yoga, run etc. never did anything before just sat on my butt at a computer all day for 32 yrs. People get surgery and get on with you life. Also now off of ALL pain pills. I don't even take Tylenol nothing.
@@charmaneholland3960 that's great to hear. That is so awesome 😊 Keep it moving. I don't like taking pain medicine, only after the surgery a few weeks. My surgery was successful, but in a few weeks, I will be getting Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery. I'm limited at the moment. I can't put pressure on my right arm. I waited so long. I can do lower half walking exercises. Standing is better.
I saw my GP on New Year's Eve, and she mentioned that my medical record showed that I have degenerative disc disease as detected in a scan I had in 2017. I was horrified, until now. Thank you for explaining this in such a reassuring and informative way. I will look at your exercises.
I have severe degenerative disc disease and worn out facet joints in my lower back/ pelvis , my last flare up was 8 weeks of pain that I couldn’t walk, stand and spasms 24/7 .. I was at the point waiting for facet joint injections but during the 3 month I was back at the gym… 2 years later I am doing dumbbell weights for 30 mins per day and make sure I walk every day.. Working on my core has helped..I know I will have another flare up and it will be another painful few weeks.. I refuse to take shots or be in a scooter at 63… I’m stronger than ever and know what I can’t do now and listen to my body .
Smh.. You got me with that $9.99 miracle pill joke. I was listening to you with ear-pods, while cooking dinner when I stopped, spun around and looked for my tablet to change the channel. Good one!
I wonder how many people might have turned off the video before they realized I was joking!! I hadn't thought of that before. Well, thanks for continuing to listen :). And thank you for your feedback.
You are a brilliant teacher, very clear and to the point. Also, you truly care about people and have dedicated your life to easing pain. You have my highest respect. I recently saw a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician. We are in the middle of a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. In many ways you remind me of her. She cares, too. How grateful I am to such humanitarians. My thanks to all of you.
Thank you for the video, I am 28 and have been dealing with relentless back pain for 6 months. It has greatly affected my work and recreational activities. I got and mri and was diagnosed with DDD and anular tearing. This video helped me understand more about my situation and I am now hopeful that I can get some relief with PT
I appreciate you explaining it all Doctor, I’ve been diagnosed with spinal stenosis since 2013, now a recent MRI shows DDD. Pain has increased & my ADL has decreased🙏🏽
You're welcome. Don't give up on getting better. I hope one of the lessons of this and other videos is that just because you have DDD and/or spinal stenosis, doesn't mean you don't have avenues to pursue to get better. You definitely do but it does sound like you should be with a good doctor to guide you through it. I wish you all the best.
Should be with a good doctor. I hear them words loud and clear. I've been through a lot that have sucked the money out of me. Now I'm on tramadol 200 for pain witch does nothing but I refuse to go higher. Dealt with this for 20 years due to bad doctors. Now my mental state is far worse then my problems from my back.
You are the best! I never understood my DDD diagnosis until now. Alll the doctors I have seen tried unsuccessfully or didn't take the time to my detriment. Thank you for your clarity and direction. What a relief!
The problem with Doctors viewing DDD from a clinical stand point is that they often forget about the human suffering behind this diagnosis. I've been in pain for 6yrs, tried physical therapy, nerve blockers, painkillers, yoga, chiropractor etc and still in daily pain. But hey it's just classed as minor DDD by the spinal specialist! I live in the UK with private medical.
This is where my frustration is. They tell me it’s minor too but I’m in my 20s and I’m in so much pain everyday. I don’t feel like they really empathize because it’s ‘mild’
The pain and daily difficulty ! The reality of the pain needs to be addressed . I can barely move on a daily basis w pain, cramps, numbness in legs, feet and hands .
Here to learn about this since my boyfriend has just been diagnosed with it at the ripe old age of 24. I know it's going to be a journey to get the boy to actually seek treatment instead of just "toughing it out", but I'm hopeful that now he has actual records backing up his pain he'll have access to better ways to manage it!
I am 80yo haveDDD stenosis in lumbar spine. Do all the exercises and stretching it helps but not always. Am trying to avoid surgery. Very good explanation of the options.
You are fantastic..you shed so much light on all the points necessary for those with DDD. You relieved all the fear our family has had regarding this issue we have been dealing with as of late. Thank you!!!!
I really wish doctors would spend more time on developing non-addictive pain management that really works. Advil don't cut it. My pain is 24/7/12. Like ice picks all over my spine and now in my right hip too.
@Kurt M. Alternatives? Not many. I was a test dummy for fentanyl back in 2005, and I still have the rash to prove it. I'm testing thyme for my bodies reaction to it. Feels like the flu or pneumonia. But, I remain open.
That was the best information and explanation I have ever had. I take the shots in my cervical spine the disc presses on the nerve causing severe headache and neck, arm and shoulder pain T 7-8 Which doesn’t help anymore And lower lumbar 1-6 1 of the injections That my doctor uses to treat the pain that’s in my lower back that runs down the back of my leg into my foot is extremely painful when he and Jack’s that but it usually last about 4 to 6 months. But because I’m a diabetic and having great difficulty getting my sugars under control because I have Gastro paresis, I think there’s some other thing going on that’s keeping me from getting my blood sugar under control because there’s days I go without even eating and my blood sugars will hit 400 so we got to figure out what’s going on, but thank you very much. I’ll learn more about what you had to say today than any explanation. I’ve had so far over the years.
Thank you very much for sharing this video I'm glad I came across it is it's been very informative. I was just diagnosed with lumbar degenerative disc disease a year-and-a-half for 2 years ago I was diagnosed with lumbar degenerative disc disease all I can say is thank God for physical therapy because it has done wonders
Wonderfully presented! I am a very active 73 year old. Typically, I work out for an hour 6 days a week. Three months ago, I had a 6 week remodeling project that need to be completed in 3 weeks. I finished but it caused 24/7 level 10 pain from my L4-5. That lasted for a month until I was offered core strengthening exercises by a Physical Therapist. A surgeon wants to fuse with screws and rods the L4-5 to relieve stress on the nerves. It is now mid February and I am basically pain free. I am back to full exercises with a lot of core/back and lower extremities added to the mix. I avoid any kind of surgery if at all possible. I am still on the fence about the proposed surgery. But I am not looking forward to a future bout with 24/7 level 10 pain. For the core...I am doing all those in the pictures your displayed. Your presentation is a reminder ...not to slack off. Thank you very much!
At 34, my left leg was on fire and pounding. Herniated disk L5S1 with material having gone into my spinal cord. Neurologist stated that dissecting me from front, moving my organs, drilling hole and pulling material from spinal cord (said it looks like crab meat). I opted for “NO”. Now I’m 62 and have lived on opioids (Oxy) for 6 years following a fall in a frost covered handicap ramp having spent 5 months in a power chair (includes 1.5” of torn tendon that came apart like a rope, both meniscus torn in knees, hellish lower back pain includes L2-L4 bulging, periformis syndrome on both sides and problems with T4-T9 compensation). Did trigger point injections for 4 yrs every week. Gained 90 lbs -depression now have Type2 with metabolic syndrome and cirrhosis due to non-alcohol h fatty liver disease. INJURIES CAN DESTROY SOMEONE’S LIFE with the Disruption being poverty along with chronic pain. I’m to start with the physical therapist this coming week. The only Big Pharma drugs I use is for the severe pain and it is referred to as a “low dose”.
Wow this video answered a lot of questions for me...I'm having a lumber MRI done next week and pain management the week after that. I'm 55 now but over the years from time to time my lower back would act up but would always get better after a week or so. Well 7 months ago I started getting numbness in my left foot and a couple of months later the sciatic nerve in my lower back started hurting going all the way down my leg to my foot. Fast forward a couple of months to now and physical therapy hasn't seemed to help and taking Ibuprofen vaguely helps but not much so this is where I'm at now with the MRI and pain management coming up for me. You're video went over a lot of what I didn't know or how things work with my back. Thanks for the information...liked and subscribed. 🙂👍
Thank you Dr. Cooper for this very informative video. In 2020 I tore two herniated discs (annular tears) in the lower lumbar area. It’s excruciating pain & worse than child birth!!😢 Just received today my 3rd round of epidural steroid injection in L2-3-4. Plus have a pinched nerve at S-1 & L-5 that is causing muscle weakness in my right leg. Have had injections there too. It’s a Godsend that I happened on your video as I have been down in the dumps today as wondering if I am doing the right thing. Luckily I came across your video & realize I need more to build my core which is so painful. Hope to try & power thru more soon. Thank you, from a retired hospital RN of 25+ years!
Thank you so much for your very kind note. And thank you for your 25+ years of nursing service! Hang in there and best of luck with the exercises. I would suggest that if the core strengthening is very painful to do, then maybe you could find another way or set of exercises to strengthen the muscles. Usually you should be able to strengthen the muscles without working through the pain. Sometimes that means exploring a few different ways with a great physical therapist. If you're still having trouble, consider doing some exercises in the pool, which should take away the pain. As a general rule, you don't want to try and power through sciatic type pain. Rather, you want to find a way to stretch and strengthen the muscles without pain even if it means going a little slower.
Dr., thx for the informative video which adds to my personal catalogue of info on this superior topic. PT and regular stretching and/or Chiropractor / Acupuncture care can help to tolerate the spinal issues. I'm 71, retired (had to retire due to the Chronic Pain/Teriible stiffness form my spinal issues), and continue to do personal research into these afflictions. I have suffered for decades with lower back pain (3-5 on the scale - increasing now), and that traversed to the top of my neck. Various sites of Spinal Stenosis, L2 , L3 bulging Discs, L5-S1 Spondylioethesis, Spondylosis in the entire spine including Facet Joint Syndrome & Dextroscoliosis of 25 Degrees. Although I have varied medical opinions of the causes, I firmly beleive that the scoliosis has been caused by my Leg Length Discrepancy - 1 inch shorter right leg. Not form birth, but as a result of a fractured righ Femur in 1966 (15 yo), playing HS Football. When the Body cast came off after 3 months, the left leg grew, the right leg did not. The Ortho Dr at the time was surprised and offered no advice and left that Unaddressed. My parents were ignorant about that condition, and nerver thought about what should be done. He should have insisted that I should wear Corrective shoes for the rest of my life. That Trauma took about 15 years to surface as lower back pain & Stiffness. It has been a slow Downhill process from there. My hips and knees have OA (right knee is Bone on Bone, the left Hip is worse than the right). I have been wearing corrective shoes since 2011, but it is too late, the damage has been done, twisting and curving the spine. Consultation with 6 different Spinal & neural Surgeons all said that there is No Surgery For Me. Too much Arthritis. There are three lessons learned here: Drink Lots of Water (I never did) & Pay Attention to your pains and discomfort and address them accordingly; and Maintain Proper Posture - avoid the Ills of Forward Head Posture (commuting by car for over 45 years, at least 3 hours a day). FHP as a few Chiropractors on the Web will be the Epidemic of the current generations - Thanks to the Smartphone, PCs, and the like - always looking down, etc.
YES on the leg length discrepancy! I had spurring on my R femur head, and I ended up having a total hip replacement, as it came to the point that I could NOT walk! I could ride my bike, so I rode ~ an hour each day at a fast clip on a challenging gravel/dirt road, for two months before my surgery. Best thing I could have done. PT released me after a week! BUT the surgeon left me with the operated side over an inch longer than the unaffected side. I now have twisting scoliosis on the short leg side, with worsening osteoarthritis showing on ea successive x-Ray. Had I had the length discrepancy repaired, I’m sure this would not be happening. And the surgeon had a less than compassionate reaction- brought Pine boards of varying thicknesses into the exam r, threw them on the floor, and told me to ‘see whichever one feels best’, without ever measuring my leg lengths. This was at a well-known university teaching hospital - heck of an education they’re giving the student Orthopaedic surgeons!😡😩😢
I was 24 when I had my first L4-L5 Laminectomy due to a Softball sliding accident. 27 when I had my first fusion. I was part of the initial trial for the cages. 29 for my 3rd bone fusion & at finally at 40 for my last one my L3-S1 fusion...2 Rods, 6 Screws & a Plate at the base of my spine. I'm now 53 & have an Erector Set in my back because at the early age of 24 I was diagnosed with DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease) I had DDD
Just think, my journey with a Specialist has just begun. I had monthly visits to a Chiropractor for many years. I’ll take it under advisement to better discern our visits.
My future husband has just been diagnosed at the exact same age, except it was tumbling down a fifteen foot embankment as a child that did him in...I hate seeing him in so much pain all the time but I doubt he'll go for the fusion considering the type of man he is. Hoping the non surgical options pan out for him
I’m 24 and was diagnosed with DDD @ l2/3 at the age of 22 I’ve been struggling so much I come from Mexico where the man is supposed to endure everything thrown at him. I’ve been doing hard work labor since I was I was 12 main cause of early DDD I’m struggling so much with getting help especially from family
@@sandeepparmar7599 how are you doing buddy? I'm good. More on muscle soreness and stiffness around neck area, traps, rhomboids. Less headache though. So I'm doing ok nontheless
Hello Dr. Cooper! Thanks so much for producing this video. It has greatly helped me understand more about my DDD. I have been diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis in l4, l5, S1 with a herniated disc. If I understand your message correctly, after the steroid injections are done it is imperative to seek and work with a very good physical therapist with proper exercise and diet to help avoid having the problem reoccur. As you point out, nothing is guaranteed, however proper exercise is vital in improving my chances of pain reoccurring. Did I understand you correctly? By the way, I have just reached my 70th birthday as of Dec. 2022. Thanks in advance
You understand me perfectly. The injection opens up the window of opportunity so that you can work on the exercises with a great physical therapist. And once you have the exercises, the goal is to integrate the exercises into your life and make it a part of your daily routine. Happy 70th Birthday! Remember that doing the exercises is how you are going to stay strong and healthy into your 90s and beyond :).
I was diagnosed very young, after back surgery for what my neurosurgeon and all in OR said was the “worst ruptured disc they’d ever seen come thru the OR.” (I worked at the hospital). The disc was lower lumbar and ruptured right onto my sciatic nerve. Later I went thru MRIs and it was a list of all the bulging discs! I know more have gone & I’m basically on bed rest anyway, now. It sucks.
Hang in there. It sounds like you've been through and are going through a lot. Hopefully the worst is behind you. When you are feeling better and don't have any precautions about exercise from your surgeon, remember to talk to your doctor about getting a set of exercises to help prevent this sort of thing in the future.
Sounds like my story. I was 26 and I had lower laminectomy and 7 years later again and then eventually neck problems. Doctor told me at 26 I had DDD and it would get worse over time. 40 yrs. later and 6 surgeries done, I'm no better off. All you can do I think when you get diagnosed, is keep your weight off, exercise regularly and eat healthy. The last 5 yrs I faithfully work out 3x a week and lost 40 lbs, but am still in pain. I just take Tylenol and tramadol and rest. Nothing more you can do. Surgery isn't the answer.
Oh Brenda and Debra…sorry this happened to you! I have back pain… 2 knee replacements and hip replacement. Ugh! Live with pain but I take bromeliad, turmeric, vit D. It does help when I stay off processed food. Please seek Jesus and pray! Also, I urge you to watch Watchman River on RUclips and put yourself on Sunday prayer list… I have yet to do that but you have inspired me. I am an RN for 40 years.
Im 19 and was diagnosed with DDD when i was 18. Doctors said it was really really bad. They havent really given me anything to do and have no future procedures to help. At its worst, i couldn't walk for the kife of me. Extreme pains for any movement. For the past few months, its gotten a lot better but im still weak in my leg and back. If i walk a mile or so, i have heavy pains. Really sucks to have this so young since it has stopped most of my activities i loved to do. Hopefully i can find ways to help this.
Sorry to hear about your pain. If your first doctor wasn't able to help, I would strongly suggest you get a second or even third opinion. There are lots of ways to go about treating these symptoms so it may be you just need another opinion to get yourself a clear diagnosis and a good, comprehensive treatment plan.
Dont worry dear.you will get better beacause you r young and healing is more likely for your age.get enought fruit vegetebales and vitamines especially vitamine D and B12 .take care not to lift heavy things .and when your pain got away walk as much as you can to get stronger
I’ve lost 1 1/4” on my right side because of this. I really can’t stand the pain anymore. Idk how I’ve managed to hold a job or cook dinner. Those luxuries are likely soon to disappear for me. I just feel hopeless at this point. I hope to get some relief soon-will see my dr next week, so I’m looking forward to that.
WOW! Thank you very much! I have to continually get nerve ablations to combat the pain. Now I know to look for your other video of exercises that will help straighten my back.
Thank you so much for this explanation. I just got diagnosed this week with DDD. I was in pain for about a month and the pain is not going away. The Doctor did not explain much to me so I was a lost to what's happening. This is all good information ❤
Thank you for the video. I was diagnosed with early onset DDD about 5 yrs ago, have it in combination with Scheurmann's disease so all of my thoracic discs are herniated into my vertebral bodies instead of the nerve spaces. Looks like puzzle pieces on an MRI. Have lost two inches of height already and am still in my 40s. Have a great spine dr/pain mgmt specialist. First one (since retired) said my spine has probably been degenerating at a rapid rate since I was in about the second or third grade.
Sorry to hear of your struggles. I'm really glad you have found a great spine/pain specialist. That's really important. I would encourage you to talk with your doctor about making sure you have a good exercise program to help prevent further issues in the future.
Thank you. I saw him this morning. I already have a good exercise program (including yoga exercises.) We have a great setup here: two teaching hospitals and two medical schools within an hour's drive. Most of my doctors are in a large clinic across the street from one of the teaching hospitals 5 min from my house. Very lucky with that. Can't live too far from a hospital because of a blood disease that I have.@@PrincetonSpineJointCenter
I walk about 3 miles every day and do yoga stretches. It keeps my back pain bearable most of the time. I occasionally take pain killers, if I go on a long car journey or look after my grandchildren for too long
Excellent presentation and thx for providing the insights into the arena of back pain issues, your explanation is straight forward and goes to the root. 🙏
10/10! Thank you so much for the very helpful video. It answers a lot of questions simply, and with the right & helpful amount of detail. Thank you doc!😊
Thank you for clear explanation. I have had 3back surgeries and everything you said was 💯correct. I am now seeking further medical advice as what can be done now. Extreme pain!!!!
In 1978, I had my lower back broken due to DV but my doctor said my pain was psychosomatic😂 it took until 1990 to find I had bone fragments in my spinal column, ruptured discs, 10:13 aracnoiditis, reflex sympathetic distrophy, osteoarthritis, ruptured discs etc. 4 lumber surgeries later massive pain and another DV took my neck in C2-T-2 no surgery but severe stenosis, arthritis, DDD,DJD, ruptured discs etc. lots of injections and ablations(burning nerves) now 2023 I’m 65 so have lived long time with a level of 7-8 on pain scale daily 😢 but you must stay positive, and have a great attitude! I don’t take no for answer and research like crazy because I found that most my doctors knew less than I did about my issues😂 neuropathy, radiculapathy is an issue and doctors give way too much gabapentin 1800-2200mg is what is recommended now, they insist on 3600mg daily! So speak up and be your own advocate❤
I am so happy I stubled on your video! You explained what I have learned from different doctor over many years. I have sent this video on to a friend. I have 2 low back laminectomy that have been almost magical. 2 neck fusions ( 20 years appart) that relived pain. I'm bummed that I'm having pain again, It's going down my arm. Making it almost impossible to use my dominate arm. Its only been 12 years this time since my last surgery. .
Thank you for the really nice feedback. I am sorry to hear about your pain, though. It sounds like you have been through a lot with it. I wish you all the best.
You are giving patients with back pain a clear path to understanding the causes and treatments for it. I too was bluntly informed that I have degenerative disc DISEASE as though I was washed up in a hopeless downward spiral. The neurosurgeon gave me one option which was 3 or 4 segment lumbar spinal fusion. When I left his office, I wasn’t sure about what was causing my pain and when I read the radiologist MRI report, I was in shock. I spent weeks researching alternative treatments that I later learned were not the an option for me. The terminology in the MRI report was a foreign language and I spent hours and weeks studying it and making notes. During this time, I believed that the severity of my condition was about to seriously impair my quality of life. I’m a runner (for fitness not racing) and an amateur dressage horse rider and I’m 76 with a young person’s attitude. Your video confirms my research and my understanding of this complex medical subject. Thank you so much. You are the light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm 37, lately diagnosed with multilevel minor degenerative changes (T7 to T10) with an annular tear n minor protrusion at T8-T9. My physician didn't explain anything to me like the way you have done. I lead a very active and healthy lifestyle (20 years of soccer and gym), please suggest me the lifestyle changes that I should undergo to manage the symptoms. Thanks a lot doctor! You're a ray of hope 🙏
Thank you. Even I could follow what you said. I would never be able to repeat it, but I could understand what you were talking about. Much appreciated 🤗
Excellent video!!! You delivered the information very clearly! Big positive impact to my life! Thank you so much!!! 💗 I am hopping to see those exercises which you recommend now! 😁
Here's my advice I'm not a Doctor but surgery is not a magic cure you have a big chance of being worse after surgury. The body can adjust and heal itself. Keep your strength up. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables. Intermittent fasting. If it hurts when you move a certain way- don't move that way. Avoid pain and stress.
I was diagnosed with this as a small child, and I had significant back pain after sitting in school all day or after long church services. It never prevents me from having a normal activity. When I hit my early 20s, I was told by my primary doctor that I should change my job because of my back issues. I ignored his suggestions, thinking I was far too young to worry about back conserving preventions. I continued on a few more years, and then new problems and pain down my legs started along with other embarrassing issues. I was sent to multiple physical therapists, and nothing worked. A few months after the embarrassing symptoms started, I landed in the ER and in emergency surgery because I had Caudia Equina Syndrome. That was 23 years ago. I had two surgeries by a fantastic surgeon and had instant relief of pain after the 1st, but the damage was permanent. I lost almost all of my intestines, my bladder, and now wheelchair dependent due to severe foot drop in both legs and very poor balance. I wished I had listened to my doctor when he told me about preventive exercises and taking care of my back.
Quick pain reduction: Go on a no sugar diet and stay very low on wheat consumption. Both of these 'foods' are highly inflammatory and your back WILL feel the difference! Walking and gentle stretching has also helped me so much in relieving back pain.

I am a 35 year old female. I was diagnosed with DDD in vertebrate 4 and 5 ,when I was 23. I have been living with it for over a decade and I have some days and some really bad days. I am very active, I swim, I run, I do HIT, I kickbox.. even when I'm in pain, I still do it.. not sure what it is about certain exercises (squads, mostly), but sometimes I manage to get rid of the pain for a day or two, then I have to repeat. But, sometimes no matter what I do, I just go through the pain and walk like a robot. I tried the injections at one point to ease the pain, but they were even more painful than the back pain itself.
I am 58 years old and I wad just diagnosed at the local VA hospital that I have retrolisthesis, spondylolisthesis and multilevel degenerative disc disease in my lumbar area. I have been in terrible pain. I just hope I can get this fixed. My dad who passed away in 2022 also had the same problems.
I get injections every 4 months. For the most part my pain level is 0. When it gets closer to the time for me to get another injection, the pain starts creeping back. I must continue stretching and doing no impact exercises and small weight training. Seeing a pt as well as swimming helps too. Im 64 and before I knew what was going on, I was in a lot of pain and had to quit work
what injections do you get? No one can get that many cortisone injections. I am thinking about platelet injections. they dont do harm as cortisone but are costly
It sounds like you have a plan and that things are somewhat controlled. What you might consider is to talk with your physical therapist about mixing up the exercises to see if you can find a set of exercises that help keep you strong and out of pain for longer. Sometimes it's not so much the single "best exercise" but what works best for you and your body. And sometimes you have to try some different therapy approaches to find that. Swimming is generally a really good idea, too.
I absolutely loved this video. You are the first doctor to explain the condition so clearly. I have been told I have ddd and been waiting for over a year to get a proper diagnosis or treatment. I am in constant pain in lower back and hip. Pain is worse on standing walking or lying on my back. My best position is sitting and even sometimes this becomes painful! When walking my back goes into excruciating spasms and I have to bend forward and wait for it to release. Your video really helped me to understand. Thank you 🙏🏽
I used to have the same issues as you. I've have DDD and facet issues giving me constant pain since 2010 and now disc bulges for the past 2 years. I used to struggle to walk 15 yards without taking a break or leaning forward, and standing was difficult after 2 minutes. Now, standing still hurts but I can walk all day and do 15 mile hikes carrying 40 lbs on my back. Try strenghtening your core, fixing any anterior pelvic tilt, and wake up your glutes. It didn't solve my problems but it DEFINITELY allows me to do more.
@@gibby35412 thank you for that. I am impressed with your progress. One question if you don’t mind how did you get started and how did you manage to keep motivated? I am enlightened with your achievement. Hoping I will be able to begin and maintain my journey. Thank you 🙏🏽 Take care and I wish you continued success👍🏽💐👏🏽

Makes me wonder about the mri I got
Aw im so sorry. Be strong! Never give up!
Never surrender!
I hope everything is going well! ❤
I havent been diagnosed yet even after seeing so many doctors,i may have ddd in my neck im trying everything too ;(

In the UK NHS doctors are lazy and they don't want to explain. I found one only doctor paid by my health insurance that he told me u can do it with anti-inflammatory and exercise. That's really nice of you to say! But the spine is so interesting on its own that it's easy to get excited about talking about it :)
One of the best videos on degenerative disc disease. Thank you.
My wife is suffering from back pain and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge on this subject.
My still living father who is almost 97 has never once had back pain. For the most part, he walks without a cane, and when he does its because he's getting more frail not in pain. On no medication whatsoever. It must be in his genes that he has done so well for so long.
What does he NOT eat, let me guess, fast, junk, chemical laced foods?
That's GREAT. Your father is a strong man. I hope he continues to stay healthy and happy.
Thank you Doctor for taking the time to explain all of this to all the sufferers out there
Very useful, thank you! I'm one of those people who, at age 60, had a CT scan for something else and then was told I have "severe degenerative disc disease" in my L5 although I have no pain.
Thanks. Nice video
Lisa I had the same thing but I got Spinal Fusion for my
L4 L5 and S1. I will be 70 and now I can do yoga, run etc.
never did anything before just sat on my butt at a computer
all day for 32 yrs. People get surgery and get on with you life. Also
now off of ALL pain pills.
You didn't mention how you turned from pain to pain free?
Right
I laughed lol ty so much for this!
Thank you for such an amazing, generous and kind comment.
@@Quickstepz-OG Have you tried Gabapentin? It brings my pain down from about 7 to 3. Makes it tolerable at least.
Thank-you for putting this painful condition in perspective
My nana was 92 and her spine was in really good condition. Only low gidd……….if you eat right and keep your core tight plus light weight lifting
Any updates
I am 80yo haveDDD stenosis in lumbar spine. Do all the exercises and stretching it helps but not always. Am trying to avoid surgery. Very good explanation of the options.
You are fantastic..you shed so much light on all the points necessary for those with DDD. You relieved all the fear our family has had regarding this issue we have been dealing with as of late. Thank you!!!!
This was incredibly informative as I now completely understand the reason my specialist adopted my current course of treatment.
I’m so grateful for my yoga practice. I rarely have pain while doing hot yoga, not to say I don’t have any later. I deal with it.
The forward bending compresses the spine. Be careful my friend !
Minute 9:30 worth waiting for :)😀. Really great video, thank you.
Clear, concise information!!
That was the best information and explanation I have ever had.
I take the shots in my cervical spine the disc presses on the nerve causing severe headache and neck, arm and shoulder pain T 7-8
Which doesn’t help anymore
And lower lumbar 1-6

That my doctor uses to treat the pain that’s in my lower back that runs down the back of my leg into my foot is extremely painful when he and Jack’s that but it usually last about 4 to 6 months.
Best presentation I’ve seen yet!
Thank you Dr. very good explanation. I tried everything and still have pain. Very scared of surgery.
This is great advice ❤
I’m 33 and I’ve been diagnosed with DDD in my thoracic spine & a lumbar fracture. This pain literally doesn’t stop but staying active does help.
This was so informative and has helped me understand. Thank you.
I had a Dr tell me I was going to end up in a wheel chair, so glad to come across your video
I'm now 53 & have an Erector Set in my back because at the early age of 24 I was diagnosed with DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease)
I had DDD
Just think, my journey with a Specialist has just begun. I had monthly visits to a Chiropractor for many years. I’ll take it under advisement to better discern our visits.
My future husband has just been diagnosed at the exact same age, except it was tumbling down a fifteen foot embankment as a child that did him in...I hate seeing him in so much pain all the time but I doubt he'll go for the fusion considering the type of man he is. Hoping the non surgical options pan out for him

Very well said!! God bless you more man. What a legend. I'm 30 diagnosed 2 years ago with mild cervical DDD and trying everything to prevent it.

Excellent Doctor. I have a much better understanding now. And yes, I’ve put off seeing a specialist as long as I could stand it and walk it off.
Hello Dr.
@@PrincetonSpineJointCenter Thank you!
Thank you for the information very much needed!!!
I was diagnosed very young, after back surgery for what my neurosurgeon and all in OR said was the “worst ruptured disc they’d ever seen come thru the OR.”
(I worked at the hospital).
Im in pain too :(,what else can we do tho im trying so many methods.but still suffering here
@@unkn0wnmortaL can u get medical cannabis? I can't believe how much it has helped.. at least try to get some CBD
Great explanation! Thank you so much sir!
Good advice.Get a couple more opinions.

Great information! Thank you!
Thank you very informative video!
I walk about 3 miles every day and do yoga stretches. It keeps my back pain bearable most of the time. I occasionally take pain killers, if I go on a long car journey or look after my grandchildren for too long
And avoid bending forward when practicing yoga. ❤
This is an OUTSTANDING explanation of DDD. Thank you so much! I have learned so much more than from my orthopedist.
Thank you so much I needed this information......That magic pill joke was hilarious 😂😂😂
Great explanation. Thank you, Dr. Cooper!

Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot.
Yes thank you doc!
Dr it’s so very very helpful to me to understand what happened to me I have so many problems thank godbless
Greetings in the Mighty Name of the Most High God. I just would like to say thank you Dr. for this information. It's very helpful to me .

Excellent video!!! You delivered the information very clearly! Big positive impact to my life! Thank you so much!!! 💗
I am hopping to see those exercises which you recommend now!

Agreed. I don't trust the surgeries and no one ever says they feel much better after surgery.
Very true and adding protein definitely helps
Terrific explanation!
Thanks for that info
I don't know if I can do without sugar..lol...but I will try. Thanks
@@betterthingstodo492 apple, sliced, with a little peanut butter. Just sweet enough, with plenty power to keep u satisfied and not craving. Also, find a brand of natural plain yogurt that u like, add berries, maybe a pinch of stevia. If u love pumpkin spice, mix canned pumpkin PUREE with some yogurt, pie spices and a some 'Keto' maple syrup.
Alcohol is also inflammatory, sorry to say….

Do doctors recommend any surgery?
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation
I am 58 years old and I wad just diagnosed at the local VA hospital that I have retrolisthesis, spondylolisthesis and multilevel degenerative disc disease in my lumbar area. I have been in terrible pain. I just hope I can get this fixed. My dad who passed away in 2022 also had the same problems.
I get injections every 4 months. For the most part my pain level is 0. When it gets closer to the time for me to get another injection, the pain starts creeping back. I must continue stretching and doing no impact exercises and small weight training. Seeing a pt as well as swimming helps too. Im 64 and before I knew what was going on, I was in a lot of pain and had to quit work
It's gonna happen to me. On feet all day cleaning. My feet hurt n back. I can't believe it. Soon 59. Wow
What did they inject you with. Hopeful hearing about your success
what injections do you get?

Thank you 🙏🏽
Sounds like you have facet joint issues, but what the heck do
I know lol. I hope you can get some relief.
You really do a great job of explaining! Thank you!
