As the split between Arthur and his parents continued to grow, Jane and David eventually realize they messed up and that they should have validated him more. By then, it's too late. Arthur doesn't want any more to do with them. He doesn't attend D.W graduation but would for Kate four years later. He wouldn't show up to anything that involves meeting with his family except when Kate or Mo is concerned (Grandma Thora is possible but I don't know if she would live this long).
I think it had to do with him being older or more likely with DW being four and their parents using the excuse of “she doesn’t know better”. Basically DW only gets away with things because of her age and Arthur gets unfairly punished because of his age.

After four seasons of FU DW, PBS began to grow concerned that Matt Neff might be onto something after they presented a literal demon child that does everything under the sun to earn the scorn and ire of everyone around her for 25 seasons of agony as a perfectly acceptable part of growing up in an abusive household. In response, they pointed their Public Broadcasting Shotgun squarely at his newest seasonal compilation and began to rip it a new one, perhaps in the hopes that missing the upsurge of the analytics would kill their greatest rival. Fortunately, you can't keep a good Neff down, and after two whole copyright claims, the gospel has risen again. Time will tell if they decide to come back swinging again for round three. In the meantime, FU PBS.

OK so if DW at 5 or whatever doesn't know what a wedding is, how do all these women, who keep banging on about "oh I've been dreaming about my wedding since I was 3" know what a wedding is and how do they know they wanna do it? I think it may have to do with how much influence Religion has on one's upbringing. Like if they have a big family with many people being married in big ceremonies they are made to be part of (flower girl, ring bearer, junior bridesmaid, etc.) then they might start getting ideas early. Not to mention if there are Expectations of them growing up and getting married, then they might end up having ideas from a young age. Of course to a child, a wedding just seems like putting on pretty clothes and having a big party. So maybe the nuances of romance and commitment and such are believably glossed over by DW in the second instance here.
I love the fact that Arthur eating every left over cake from his dad's catering business is such a major part of the show but only bitchy DW ever points it out.

OK so if DW at 5 or whatever doesn't know what a wedding is, how do all these women, who keep banging on about "oh I've been dreaming about my wedding since I was 3" know what a wedding is and how do they know they wanna do it? I've always wondered about this. It's always baffled me every time I heard women say it. I'm assigned female at birth trans male and I've never ever dreamed about having a wedding, marriage or who I'd get married to until I was ffffing 18! Girls of 3 aren't even interested in boys so why would they be fantasising about getting married? It makes no sense. In this one sense, DW makes sense that she's a normal child who doesn't know the concept of weddings and marriages
I think it may have to do with how much influence Religion has on one's upbringing.
Like if they have a big family with many people being married in big ceremonies they are made to be part of (flower girl, ring bearer, junior bridesmaid, etc.) then they might start getting ideas early. Not to mention if there are Expectations of them growing up and getting married, then they might end up having ideas from a young age.
Of course to a child, a wedding just seems like putting on pretty clothes and having a big party. So maybe the nuances of romance and commitment and such are believably glossed over by DW in the second instance here.
I love the fact that Arthur eating every left over cake from his dad's catering business is such a major part of the show but only bitchy DW ever points it out.
