- Nebraska fired Scott Frost early Sunday after the Huskers fell at home to Georgia Southern 45-42 the night before. Nebraska vs Northwestern was supposed to be the successful kickoff to a 2022 season that was going to right the ship for Scott Frost and the Huskers, but instead things went horribly wrong and they never improved. On Late Kick Live Ep 303 Josh Pate discussed the end to the Scott Frost era in Lincoln and talked about where the program will go from here. Who will Nebraska target? What sort of qualifications does the new head coach for the Huskers need to have? As someone who has led NINE different programs, including Idaho and Wyoming, to national titles on NCAA 12, I am SHOCKED that Nebraska has not reached out to my agent yet smh
This is a understatement! Shows dedication and resilience. The Huskers would be lucky to land such a coach, nay an AmericanHero that will lead that program… 24/7
Nebraska needs me as A Head Coach I'm 1 of the best 🏈 Coach of all time I got 6 Ncaa 🏆
@@WheeliNDealin25 we need you at Bama working for Saban.
cant wait for the new ncaa game!

You are the first pundit that I've heard talking about the need for Nebraska to find a program builder as opposed to a big name. Nebraska should be looking at its vision for what its program can be and identifying long term strategies for getting there. Lots of schemes can work but for Nebraska you need one that you can recruit to consistently both offensively and defensively. That's exactly what you had in its glory days. You had an offensive that was unique and players that could be recruited and developed for it, especially for line play.
He was one of the first I've seen who referred to Lance Leipold as a "dynamite hire", but I think he's right.
The guy turned UW-Whitewater into one of the greatest D3 dynasties in history, then Buffalo into a yearly bowl game contender. And now he has Kansas competing.
He's neither a big name or a young hotshot upstart. But the guy can coach and can win in the toughest places.
With that said, I hope he stays at KU where he can give that fan base something to finally cheer for and he won't have a chance to beat my Badgers.
I think bud Elliot said it The best. With our combination of NIL, Facilities, BIG10 money, and fan support, we could easily be the 3rd or 4th best program in the big 10
Ive loved the huskers for 40 years. I'm on the Gary Patterson wagon.
Gary Patterson would be an awesome hire for Nebraska
This was a refreshing insight. Some of the names I hear regularly mentioned make me nervous. Matt Campbell just barely beat Iowa for the first time, in part because Iowa has a horrible offense. Iowa and Wisconsin need to be our measuring stick. At this point I am not expecting 1993-99. You just can't get there from here. It is a bridge too far. We've had the 4th best recruiting class in the B1G over the last 7-8 years. I want us to play like that. Let's compete year in and year out for the B1G West division and win it more than half the time. And let's not get embarrassed by Michigan and Ohio State. After we can do that consistently, then let's talk about reestablishing the glory years. I don't think this is too much to ask either. I also like that you mentioned Mickey Joseph. We don't know yet what he might be able to do because he's never done it before. He's certainly a talented coach, though the HC position is a different beast.
As a Lifelong Nebraska fan that was 2 years old the last time they won a National Championship I just want them to have winning seasons again. The expectations in Lincoln have been ridiculous for way to long. Start by getting to bowl games again then we can focus on winning the Big 10 West.
4th best in big ten is what??? 50th overall???
The Nebraska job is misunderstood by most of the national guys, but I think you are right. As a Nebraska fan I think we need to adjust the expectations of what we think a coach should be. Nebraska needs a guy who will grind and put in the work. You hear about guys like Andy Reid in KC and they never hardly leave the stadium. But when a guy is like that, you can’t expect them to hob knob at every booster event or important gala. They need to be allowed to be a hard working coach without all the string attached of having to be the governor, pastor, father figure, etc…
Kalen DeBoer
@@NickSheik2-33 I haven’t heard to many people talk about him, but he has a strong resume for sure.
Part of me is just hoping Mickey wins 6 games and gets extended to keep going.
@MysteriousOklahoma Those would be huge hires in my opinion. Especially, Patterson. He strikes me as someone who has the work ethic and has run a professional and productive operation for a long time.
“GET MY WIFES NAME (Lance Leipold) OUT YOUR F*CKIN MOUTH.” -all of Kansas
I'm good with it as long as they stay away from Klieman.
Lol that was a good joke. But I’d take “her” of your hands
He was an assistant under Solich and an OC when UNO had a program. Put enough 0's on a check and anyone will go anywhere
As an Aggie I would absolutely Love to have Gary Patterson. I have always been a fan of Patterson's defense and TCU program. It's a shame he wouldn't leave TCU for our job when it was open. He would be awesome for our future Texas vs Texas A&M lone star show down
Good video, from a Husker fan. Hoping they can get a HR hire somehow :/
THANK YOU! Ive been saying this about Mark Stoops for so long. Why would he ever leave!
All my friends want Urban. I don't want him anywhere near the program. Im all on for Leipold. His resume and how he build Whitewater, Buffalo, and now Kansas speaks for itself
Lane Kiffin? Would he go?
Love Gary Patterson for Nebraska
I've been saying Gary Patterson for 2weeks. He's a winner
Dave aranda, Gary Patterson, Chip Kelly.
Bo Pelini. It just makes sense. He’s worked with four members of the current coaching staff. He won 70% of his games at Nebraska. During a interview with Will Compton, Pelini was asked if he would return to Nebraska. “They would never do it”. Two months later, frost and Alberts ( AD) interview on the same podcast and indirectly made mention of Pelini and Solich who said Frank Solich was treated very wrong and it wasn’t right. Solich hired Pelini in 2003. Tom Osborne hired Pelini in 2008. Nebraska did Pelini wrong in 2014 because of poor leadership. Those folks are gone. Time to rectify the sins of the past and bring in a culture guy, grinder and one who succeeded at Nebraska. Bring Back Bo!
I like Bo. But I also don’t like the idea of knowing our ceiling is 15 every single season
This was an excellent realistic evaluation. If the expectations of many is still national championships at Nebraska that will scare off a lot of good coaches. If you are at a school where going 9-3 and winning midlevel bowls makes you very secure in your job, why leave for a place with unrealistic expectations. Who needs that stress unless that person would take it on as the ultimate challenge.
They fired our 9 and three coach... I miss him
They should hire Bobby Petrino, that dude is an offensive genius. He would get them back to winning again.
Bobby Petrino should be on the list of people to look at.
Chris Peterson
Thank you for saying no to Matt Campbell and Bill Obrien. Might as well give Mike Riley another chance if Trev Albert's is considering them 2
Matt Campbell has done a great job at Iowa State making them a consistent bowl team. That is an amazing achievement there. Also he's a midwestern guy, unlike Mike Riley.
Agree on Bill O'Brien. That'd be a terrible hire.
@@Digitalis17894 Yeah, if you want a "builder," then Matt Campbell is that. Is he the ideal #1 unquestioned candidate? No, but unless I'm just completely out of the loop I'm missing these "obvious reasons" to stay away from him.
Why does Urban not happen Josh? I have read that sources close to Urban claim that he would take the job if offered. Does Nebraska not want him?
no
@@vart7767 well if that’s the case I hope he goes to Iowa after Ferentz and they go on to win titles while Nebraska slips into nothingness for another generation

@@P51DFreak25 If Nebraska was ok starting Lawrence Philips in the National Championship game with his baggage, then we can handle a little from Urban Meyer, let’s not pretend we are of the highest morals.
I heard a lot of guesses based on talent.
Coach Frost was an exceptional candidate using this measuring stick.
Unfortunately Nebraska plays in the Big 10 and just like the SEC it starts up front.
Nebraska is loaded with talent without the ability to control the line of scrimmage it will never reach Big 10 championship or beat Ohio St in that game.
Mickey Joseph has already made changes in practice that may provide improvement, live tackling , 1st string vs 1st string
For injury reasons Frost did not
The guy that you spoke to the other day, was it coastal Carolina coach?
Will you be in Knoxville at any point this season? Man, me and my 10-year-old son, Easton, absolutely love watching your videos! You are the only RUclipsr (sports wise) that he watches! Yeah, Nebraska now can’t be what it was because of all the changes CFB has undergone since the early 2000s. But I agree they can be solid, win 8-10 games some years, a la Wisc., Iowa, etc. it’ll be interesting to see the new hire, hopefully they get their first realistic choice. I don’t know about Patterson, didn’t he just burn out? Love to see em get a Hugh Freeze, Lance Leipold, Luke Fickel, or Lane Kiffen, though I doubt Kiffen would come.
At 1:53, “Matt Campbell - out of the question for obvious reasons. Stay away from Matt Campbell.” WHAT obvious reasons???
Bryan Harsin will be the next head coach at Nebraska
First time listener...Whats the immediate disqualifer for Matt Campbell?
Gary Patterson, Matt Rhule, Hugh Freeze..1A and 1B and 1C..all would be fine
Kalen DeBoer
Lance Leipold should be looked at first. Coached at both UNO(when they had a program) and UNL. He knows the Nebraska football and state culture
@@colinschenck2129 look at DeBoer's resume.
If I'm Nebraska, I go outside the box and go hire Hugh Freeze. He's coached at three different schools at the FBS level (10-2 Arkansas State, 39-25 at Ole Miss, and currently 28-11 at Liberty) and won at all three of them. He got fired from Ole Miss for off-field stuff, not from anything going wrong on the field (worth noting he took over from the debacle of the Houston Nutt era and got progressively better: 7-6 in 2012, 8-5 in 2013, 9-4 in 2014, and then 10-3 in 2015 before a 5-7 backslide in 2016). His teams always find ways to score points and be exciting.
Interesting take. Another outside the box, Matt Entz at North Dakota State. Knows how to recruits in areas that don't have a lot of talent and can reach further out in states like California.
I don't see him leaving Liberty. Because he knows he has a problem...strippers, coeds, massage parlors and not using burner phones..
Do they have strip clubs in Lincoln?
@@KingofDiamonds85 That's an interesting thought but what would give me pause there is Craig Bohl was awesome at North Dakota State (think he won like three or four FCS titles in a row) and has been average at best since he's been in Wyoming (47-51 since 2014 and he had Josh Allen there for three years)
@@johngaltjkt62 I will say he is in the best place for him personally: fake religious coach at the fake religious school
Jeff Monken or Troy Calhoun
1.) Service Academy pedigree which is respectable.
2.)Program Builder/ Talent development.
3.) Used to adversity in recruiting..
4.) Triple Option Offense.
I personally would love to see Nebraska decide to go back to old school.
People say you can't recruit that offense. I say with NIL money you can. Maybe not 5 star QB's but you can pay some 4* linemen and RB's to play in it.
@@NickSheik2-33 I agree. If Army, Navy and Air Force can win 9 or 10 games and get players who perform well enough in that system then Nebraska surly can do the same. Plus you don't have the recruiting issue of military service so you can get top players at certain positions they could never get.
@@NickSheik2-33 100% agree. The Air Force, Navy, and Army recruit players today and can win 9/10 games then I have no doubt in Nebraska. They have better individual talent, resources, fan support than those teams right now.
Tom Herman. Got short changed at UT. Can recruit also.
Nebraska's a program that's been recruiting better than their entire division for over a decade in addition to being a blue blood that has the ability to pay a coach an 8 figure salary. Who is rejecting that?
Why did he say no Matt Campbell for obvious reasons?
Really? Campbell is barely a 500 coach himself and has won absolutely nothing of substance. The obsession with him is really strange
@@StonedMeadowOfDoom what? He made it seem like something happened between Campbell and Nebraska is what I was asking. Like Campbell did something really terrible
Mack Brown wouldnt be a surprise.
If Meyer didn't take the Texas job he's not taking the Nebraska job. Patterson is enjoying his role at Texas and getting up there in age.
Just go ahead and say they are talking to Urban
He said they were talking to someone at a current major program that no one would expect. Urban is too easy
How hilarious would it be if it were Lincoln Riley?
Just trying to spitball some "unexpected" names at major programs: James Franklin? Dabo Sweeney? Ryan Day? Steve Sarkisian? Like, I can't see Dabo leaving and I can't see Day leaving for anything besides an NFL job, but if you want "unexpected"...
@@pronkb000 Dabo is most likely going to Bama, his alma mater, once Saban retires
@@P51DFreak25 I know, but in terms of "major program you wouldn't expect," it's hard to get less expected than Dabo. And of course, Josh isn't saying that this guy is going to take the job, just that they're talking.
I was a advid Alabama fan for 40 years but left it 2 years ago and added schools to my list. Didn't like things I saw in the school the last 10 years. Even sent a letter to Saban 4 years ago pointing it out and it's just gotten worse. One of The things i didn't like he addressed it after the Texas game with his players. Wouldn't want a coach from there. The Texas game proved my point of what I've been seeing for 10 years so I came to the north because I noticed the respect and the old class football that I always enjoyed with toughness not aggressiveness that created penalties and harm to other players. I hope that they don't lose that this year. Some coaches thrive on aggressiveness. Being in the south my friends don't understand why I went north. They have the clean tuff respectful schools like the old Alabama schools use to be in the championship days. I'm a Nebraska fan and I'm trying to encourage my x Bama friends who left it for the same reasons I did to come on board with Nebraska. Let's find a coach with a program of toughness not aggressiveness wrapped around respect not self glory. Team unity teaches these boys to be better men when football is no longer a part of their lives.
My guesses would be Troy Calhoun, Air Force, Kalani Sitake BYU, and Tyson Helton Western Kentucky.
I am all in for Lance Leipold. Was an assistant/OC when UNO played, was an assistant under Solich. Done nothing but win and make programs better. I watched the Kansas/Houston game. Kansas looked very good in all three phases. Can only imagine what a program with the resources and player talent like Nebraska can be with a coach like him.
I really agree with you on your points, Patterson is someone I didn't think about. Trev has his work cut out for him, this next coach is the defining point of do we as a fan base become entirely apathetic and stop watching for awhile. Or do we see small improvements and get excited each week. I cut the game off before at the half because it was obvious the direction the game was headed. That's the first time in easily 10+ years that I have turned the game off. If we end up with another mike riley or scott frost situation, it may very well kill the interest of the fan base for awhile. So I don't envy Trev at all.
Right now, national championship contention is out of the question, but to say that's never a possibility is ludicrous. That's what many want from Nebraska, so they can continue to laugh at our futility. For the time being, the new coach has to rebuild the culture and have some winning seasons. Then he needs to compete for the Big Ten. From there, being in the national conversation isn't unreasonable. With the right coach, Nebraska can be in that conversation.
Kalen DeBoer is the right guy for Nebraska in the same way Mel Tucker is the right guy for Michigan State.
Iowa State Alum and Fan here. Seems that we have recruited you to CyclONE Nation!! OR am I wrong?
Mic doesn’t sound to well
Nebraska can absolutely compete to be a top 4 B1G program. Once USC enters the picture probably top 5. Other than OSU, Michigan, Penn State and USC there isn't another program we should be able to not compete with year in and year out. Iowa and Wisconsin need to be where the next head coach gets us too. Perennial bowl teams with a chance to win the division every year.
That’s who Pelini was. Nebraska can be the Ohio State of the west. They have more history than most programs in this country
@Supaman…. As a USC fan I want to see the Huskers get back to their elite ways…. We will be in the Big west division together and I want that Division to be as strong as the Big east division…. Need the Huskers….. UCLA ….. and either Wisconsin or Iowa to step up your game…. Southern Cali area high schools are football factories for 3 …. 4 and 5 star recruits USC can’t keep them all Huskers need a good coach that can recruit also.
What is the “obvious reason” that Matt Campbell is out of the question?
Jeff monken from army?
sam pitman at Arkansas
Spot on, Josh! Fickel is Ohio St or bust. Mark Stoops is a Kentucky legend and will stay for the same reason Mike Gundy will not leave Oklahoma State.

@@Gmac_Greg_M I totally agree. I’m a Husker fan and would love to have him, but I think he is a guy who has a high amount of chips and he wants to cash it in for his dream job. But I think he is a great coach.

@@generalneylandGBMFO let’s be real it’s not that hard to win the Big 10 East. For sure harder to make B12 champ game than represent B10 East.
Nebraska will want to strike early. I have a suspicion that two other big jobs could come open in the Big 10 west. Wisconsin has completely plateaued, what happens if they go 7-5? With all the money now in the Big 10, you will see a major increase in salaries. The other one is Iowa. I don’t think they would fire Ferentz, but the nepotism at OC is ridiculous. Would he really fire his own son? I could see a retirement coming in order to avoid an uncomfortable situation.
Then you need to drag Kalen DeBoer away the day after his last regular season game.
Charlie Huff at Marshall, Hugh Freeze at Liberty, and Mark Stoops at Kentucky. One lone wolf maybe, and that's Urban Meyer. Which I don't think he would, nor Mark Stoops. And I won't be surprised if they try for Stoops, but I think he would stay at Kentucky. Pitts head coach maybe? Luke Fickle would be a killer hire.
@JoshPate Please tell me you've seen "Nebraska football should ‘stay away from’ Matt Campbell, analyst says" - talk about lack of context leading to major misinterpretation. Wow - thanks Husker Corner for unwittingly helping the cause 🤣
Great take on second level teams
There is no reason Nebraska can't win the division regularly and win the big ten once in a blue moon. That can be done.
Divisions are going away
@@Bardmusic66 they might reorganize but they'll never go away. Especially in a recession and a stagnat economy
Nebraska can absolutely do that. They did that with Pelini quite often. Nebraska should be a team fighting for playoff contention year in and year out
Even if they win the West every year - they're still hitting the level that Josh described at most.
Had to leave that one, the Barner logo was hurting my eyes.🙄

As a Nebraska fan myself they will never be who they once where no one will pick the big red over uga or bama unless you are a die hard Nebraska fan you’re not playing for them if you wanna win a championship
Nebraska should be looking for a head coach who's had success in the B1G. If they can't manage to poach an existing B1G coach then they should go after a head coach with a proven record of turning programs around or someone who recruits well. Urban Meyer would be a good fit, but there will be some bad PR attached with that hiring. I'd say Tom Herman, Dave Aranda as well.
Luke Fickell is definitely worth calling. He’d be the perfect candidate in my opinion. But I understand it’s unlikely he makes that move. Dave Aranda, Gary Patterson, Matt Ruhle, Chris Klieman, or Lance Leipold would all be solid candidates too.

I would go Urban...if you want back into the national title scene....or maybe one of the mannings want to coach?
They need a CEO type coach, who understands the Big 10 culture. These coaches who bring in the fast, SEC offense and defensive schemes don't work in the Big 10.
There are a lot of people out there who think that Nebraska needs to completely rebuild their roster. While their roster might not be good enough to win a Natty, it’s certainly good enough to be on the top of the Big Ten West year over year. According to 247sports Nebraska has the 20th most talented roster in the nation. It ranks 4th in the Big Ten and 1st in the Big Ten West. On paper their roster is better than every other team in the Big Ten West. So somehow they’ve been able to recruit better than a lot of teams despite having a piss poor record. Recruiting might be an issue if you want to be a part of the conversation with the Elites. But it’s not an issue when it comes to competing and winning your own division. There is a huge culture and mentality issue though that the new coach needs to fix. Assuming they can keep most of the roster intact, over 90% of Nebraska’s starters should be returning next year. So there’s plenty of depth, experience and talent to work with. If anyone listened to post game interviews after Oklahoma one of the players was saying they have been tagging off in practice the past 4 years instead of tackling. That’s one of the issues right there. How can a team expect to be mean and physical on game day if they aren’t even practicing it? Sometimes I think this job at Nebraska gets treated like it’s a lost cause. But it’s really not. The players and the resources are there. You’ve just got to come in, get those players to buy in and then rebuild the culture and mentality, which all comes down to how players practice and prepare for the games.
Amen
Mark Dantonio. Watch.
Gary Patterson..thats why Pate is one of best.
Charles Huff from Marshall might be a good gamble. Nick Saban assistant head coach for two seasons and his team just beat notre dame

No way Stoops leaves UK. He's got Saban level job security without ever having to win a championship
Im just curious Josh…with Nebraska being an elite football program for many generations in the past, why do u think they can’t be that again?

@@kathrynnard8059 yes and while he was at Ole Miss he beat Saban 2 out of 3 times
Honestly I’m surprised no one is talking Dave Clawson from Wake….. everywhere he goes he wins!
Same for Leipold. I'm all in for him. Was an assistant/OC when UNO had a team and was an assistant under Solich
@@colinschenck2129 yea I think either one would be a great hire… they do more with less than anyone in the country! …. If Nebraska can get urban Meyer they are going to go with him for sure tho!
I like Josh's commentary but I disagree with him on several counts here. My dream candidate would be Mark Stoops, but I agree with Josh that there is no good reason why Stoops would leave Kentucky. I also agree that Patterson and Leipold could be good picks. I disagree that Campbell is a bad pick, I think he has done a solid job at Iowa State with much less to work with than he would have in Lincoln. I also disagree that a guy like Fickell is untouchable. The AAC, like the Pac-12 and Big-12 are staring down the barrel of becoming mid-majors by the late 2020s. If Fickell could establish reasonable expectations in Lincoln, it is a good opportunity for him and I think he will see it that way. ALSO, Dave Aranda at Baylor (who Pate didn't mention) should be on the list and my argument would be exactly the same as Fickell. Looking long term, top coaches have to get to the Big 10 or SEC to really have a chance at glory.
My biggest disagreement with Josh is that Nebraska should lower its expectations. It shouldn't. There is no reason why Nebraska should not perennially contend for the Big Ten West. 20% of the time the Huskers should be a 6 to 7 win team, 60% of the time a 7 to 8 win team, and 20% of the time a real contender (meaning 8 to 9 wins) to win the Big Ten. To drop that expectation is to surrender a program with the best fan base in America, now the best facilities in America, and a storied history. For people who poo-poo Nebraska keep in mind that the NIL changes could make Husker players some of the best compensated in college sports precisely because Husker fans are so dedicated. That is the actual competitive advantage Nebraska has.
As a Husker fan I AM willing to adjust expectations from the 90s but NOT willing to surrender. Pate is arguing for surrender.
They should hire Scott Frost.
If Nebraska is smart, they will look at every top quality coach from the Big 12 and PAC 12, and go to work. Those conferences are in big trouble. The schools are trying to get into the Big 10 and The SEC. Why wouldn’t a coach jump ship into a top tier conference too.
Bobby Petrino is waiting…
Please hire Bill Obrien
laugh if you want to but i say go get Bobby Petrino he brings instant credibility.
I am a Razorback guy, but always appreciated and cheered for the Huskers
And I personally think Brett Beliema would be a Awesome hire for you guys ! He didn't work out for us, but he's an outstanding coach ! He's a Big 10 guy, not an SEC guy. He would be a great fit ! Proven winner !
What about Dan Mullen?
no
I like Coach Micky. ...😎
As a Colorado fan, I would really rather not have Nebraska snag Gary Patterson 😂😂 but if they do good on ‘em.
Are you saying you want Gary Patterson in Boulder?
Lance Leipold won 6 national championships at UW-Whitewater, he is a great coach...but as a Wisconsin fan I really hope he doesn't get hired at Nebraska...
Fire Cryst and hire him then.
