  • A train ride from Vienna to London in a single day, no airports, no flights - just a chill-out day by train, firmly on the ground. Vienna depart 06:52 via Frankfurt & Brussels to London St Pancras arriving 21:03. How much does it cost? How to buy tickets? See www.seat61.com...
Note that the video shows departure from Vienna Westbahnhof, the ICEs to Frankfurt now depart from Vienna Hauptbahnhof.

WOW the trains over there sure are beautiful compared to what the looked like back in the mid '70 's when I was in the US Air Force stationed @ Zweibrucken AB , Zweibrucken , Germany from June ' 73 - may ' 75. I traveled a lot by train & buses back then. I wish the USA had the great train system like Europe & other parts of the world have . Thanks for taking me along on your train trip. Happy travels Mark.

Returned from Vienna to London with an overnight stay in Brussels (by choice) as part of a trip London - Rotterdam - Berlin - Prague - Budapest - Vienna in 2013. Fantastic way to travel and brings some excitement to international travel when compared with the (now so boring) experience of air travel. Being able to view over the driver's shoulder on the train Vienna - Frankfurt was an unexpected bonus. You can't do that by air (unless you're a hijacker).

Nice Video. The only thing missing is the magic moment in the middle of the channel tunnel when all prices in the bar change from Euro to Pounds Sterling.
I did the following trip: Glasgow-London-Brussels-Aachen-Lüneburg, using all kinds of trains (Caledonian Sleeper, Eurostar, Talys, Interregio...).

Aww I used to deliberately wait to catch the ICE train to work everyday from Interlaken to Bern (it alternated with domestic trains)...you often could get a cabin room to yourself, very quiet, smooth and look through those big windows at the gorgeous lakes and mountains. I miss my commute to work, probably one of the best ones in the world and one of the nicest trains in Europe. Swiss trains are really great too, what train in the world has a Starbucks double decker carriage (best view from a coffee shop ever) and even a carriage with a playground for kids. But ICE still stands out as the coolest for me. ;)

Great video Mark. It really shows the benefits of train travel over air. I took the Pendelino and Eurostar from Stockport (south of Manchester) to Paris this summer and did the 770km trip in 4h40m, less than the total travelling time by air and much more enjoyable.

I've actually done it, am I the only one?! Did it the other direction, London to Vienna in just over 13 hours, with changes in Brussels and Frankfurt Hbf. The break point in the ticket was Cologne. paid £49 plus €49, so cheaper than the flights that day.
I love your site, Mark Smith!!! Keep going, and don't listen to the complaints of the laity: it's too complicated, too long, etc. blah blah blah. It isn't!

Really enjoyed this video! Never realized such a trip could be done in a day. I've only had the pleasure of taking the Eurostar once, from Paris to London, but now I'm wishing I had been able to tour more of Europe by rail. America's Amtrak has some scenic lines, but nothing as extensive or enjoyable as this, I think.

I enjoy watching videos of passenger train service whether it be Amtrak, Metrolink, Coaster, MARC rial, ViaRail Canada, the ICE train, Eurostar, TGV, Thaley's, Pendolino in the UK, Italiarail, the China High speed rail, the Japanese bullet trains, they are great to watch. When I travel long distance, I take Amtrak and will be riding Amtrak more often when I'm in the San Diego area when I go to Los Angeles & Oxnard to visit my late wife's crypt in Los Angeles, visit my late daughters grave in Ventura, CA. The train is the civilized & relaxing way to travel.

Overnight it's a long journey with plenty of transfer times:
      Wien Hbf 20:39 - EN 90490 - 8:15 Köln Hbf
      Köln Hbf 9:43 - ICE 214 - 11:35 Bruxelles Midi
Bruxelles Midi Eurostar 12:52 - EST 9133 - 14:05 London St Pancras International
If you want to save two hours, get up earlier in the morning and ask the sleeping car attendant to pack up your breakfast so you can eat it in the station waiting for your connection:
      Wien Hbf 20:39 - EN 90490 - 5:36 Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof
      Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof 6:43 - ICE 18 - 9:35 Bruxelles Midi
Bruxelles Midi Eurostar 10:52 - EST 9133 - 11:57 London St Pancras International
No risk of missed connections here as you have plenty of time everywhere you change. Note that at Frankfurt Flughafen you'll have to walk to the other station. Curious they're routing the nightjet through the local station there.

Too bad the EN arrives half a hour too late in Cologne to catch the ICE there, despite leaving Frankfurt 1 hour earlier.
I don't know how bad the check in times really are for the Eurostar, you may still catch the same EST if you stay in the EN, and change to the THA 9424 in Cologne, arriving in Bruxelles at 10:32. However, I think I'd also rather get up earlier than risk to miss the Eurostar.

We did this the in the other direction recently, but coming from York in the UK we broke the journey with an overnight in Cologne. There's a direct Cologne-Vienna service leaving about 0950 which goes down the lovely Rhine Valley (which the fast Cologne-Frankfurt line cuts off). I can recommend the route if you fancy doing this but the early start/long day combination puts you off - we had a 9-year-old in tow and she loved it!

Recently traveled with Deutsche Bahn from Frankfurt to Vienna. First class was overbooked so people stood in the aisles. AC didn't work properly. On top of that, the windows had no sunshades so we broiled in the sun for 3 hours. In general, many German trains are crowded, lateness is normal, many trains are dirty and poorly maintained and many stations are in bad shape and litter-strewn.

Flying would involve a train, plane then another train, and take 5h. If you fly, the final leg from Heathrow/Luton/Stansted to London by train costs £20 one-way, on top of the flight! So not as much longer or as much more in cost as you'd think. But it's not about time, it's really about the experience.

Dear Mark the video quality was the best I have ever seen. I felt like I was seeing it first-hand. It was movie quality. What kind of camera did you use? The content was also great. What was that entrée at 5:57? It looked like larvae.

How much did the travel cost you with the train? When im comparing Amsterdam to Frankfurt its already around 100,- When looking at that price it mustve cost you like 400,-? Tell me please I want to see how much expensiver it is compared to plane.

    • @seat61
      @seat61  6 лет назад +1

Vienna-Frankfurt from €29.90, Frankfurt-London from €59.90. Fares work like air fares.

Thank you for this excellent video. I even forgive you for having a beer with lunch in lieu of a decent bottle of Germanic Plonk. The architectural images captured were wonderful - thank you.

So in the 2nd class the total price would be 100 euros. I just checked the prices to fly with Norwegian from Vienna to London and the average prices were around like depending on the time, from 100 euros to up to 200 euros... But you fly from Vienna to London in like two hours, that versus twenty four hours I think we have the ultimate winner here, airplane.

Travel is like Life. It's not about how quickly you get it over with, but what you do with it. The train wins on experience, every time! ;0)

+Mark Smith (The Man in Seat 61) Well that's your opinion, I much more prefer the time in the place I'm going to rather than the time in the train / airplane / whatever I'm travelling on.

Very nice video, and it's great your mention of Calavatra as the architect of Liege train station ; the close vicinity between Köln cathedral and its famous station is also great in its kind, in my opinion.
You didn't ride the new Eurostar stock, the new one is much better than the one you experienced, and can compete with ICE, though narrower due to british gauge…

Here in Queensland Australia, in Brisbane the trains go from here all the way to the top of it, around Mackay, and that is called the spirit of Queensland with the tilt train that only goes to Rockhampton which is like REALLY hot. I was there once, (living there) and the tropics of Capricorn goes through it. It’s the emu tilt train that goes there, because that’s the electric tilt train with the other train also a tilt that goes up to Mackay. And that train does go to rocky, (short for Rockhampton) but the train that only guys up to Rockhampton is called city of Rockhampton. It’s my dream to go on BOTH, also to see my friend in rocky. Hope you didn’t mind reading all this but thanks anyways 🤣 I’m out.

I did London to Vienna in a day on a coach back in the 70s. Cost me £40 odd quid and I bet we saw a lot more of the country than you did.
