AWD is a beast but actually thought the RWD did better than expected. Xdrive is bonkers. It would be interesting to see RWD V Xdrive in RWD mode at somepoint in the future. Another great vid Joe! 👍
not really, what would be the point of that? RWD is gonna be slightly faster because of the lower weight, there is your result. Absolutely unnecessary
@@taladon6420 Not necessarily. 50kg is nothing but it would be interesting to see if there is any difference at all and to see if anything at all is lost through the drivetrain by switching to RWD. One or 2 reviewers have commented that the Xdrive cars feel like they have a slightly different engine mapping seemingly producing more torque lower down. I just wanna see it. Why not. No harm. 🤷♂️

Weight and fuel roughly net's out the X-Drive weight "penalty". Both epic machines. Supercar performance. Can't wait for my M3 X-Drive Touring to arrive later this year.

I’ve driven the M3 CompX: it’s a race car. But it’s buttoned down. Anyone who says it doesn’t need the Xdrive hasn’t put it in sport plus and gassed it. Fantastic Around corners also.
Xdrive is a must. I was shocked so many youtubers bought the RWD version knowing 6 months later the xdrive was coming out. Cant wait to see the touring m3 xdrive.. that will be wow!!

It shows how capable the newer generation Xdrives are! Why did BMW bother with the standard RWD, should of just released one model the Xdrive version!

Because life doesn’t generally consist of launch control starts 😃 I’ve not tried these two, but I have owned and driven both 4WD and RWD cars and personally I prefer RWD. However, I’m aware it’s personal preference and 4WD is very capable, if that’s what you want. It’s nice they give us the choice. Personally I’m fairly sure if I tried both I’d choose RWD.

Simply check the option box for M Drive Professional for $900 and you have xdrive, RWD, and RWD with traction.

Very impressed with the xdrive was expecting the extra weight and transmission HP loss to be an issue once rolling, but held its own, by the sounds of it the xdrive had a 50kg weight advantage due to the driver and fuel so probably weighs the same. still goes to show the xdrive is superior and you've got the option to turn it into rwd when you fancy it... best of both worlds ;-)

X drive is a no brainer absolutely the way to go! This was another perfect example why watching the destruction on a dig, and basically even on a roll race!🙂

Wish there was runways like that near me. Sadly here they are all dirt or grass. Tho that may be interesting for some launches....haha. Great content Joe keep it up!!!
A killer combo of extra traction and starting in a lower gear. Same stunt as Ferrari pull when they launch their special versions of cars and drop the gear ratios a little, to make the cars even more savage on fast pulls.
You would think the M3 RWD is fast. Then comes the xDrive and fast is redfined!

Great video. Although having driven both the RWD and XDrive , there is pros to both, I just feel If you want a real BMW it has to be RWD , even though you can turn AWD off , the real Feel of a proper RWD isn't there for me , and there's a little bit of added weight.👍

Love your videos Joe! Being following your channel from 2020. I can add my 5cents on xdrive - nonx comparasion based on my 530xdrive which i own for last 6 years. I know its not the same but for info:
1. more fuel consumption
2. less steering lock (important in my case, i need almost max to park daily infront of my house)
3. maintainance. on xdrive version for chain replacement - on my car complete engine needed to be moved out of car, while in non xdrive version, replacement would be done directly from bottom of the car
4. safety: one point coulld be mentioned- Xdrive while help recovering the corners under accelerating or making corners faster, but loosing rear on acceleration usually means crashed car and hopefully not hard injuries on driver. Loosing moment on braking (being to late), is usually where hardest accidents happen. So if xdrive will make you going faster, it can actually be a bad thing becasue it will not help you stop that gained speed any faster compare to no xdrive version.

I watched a video where it did an M2 from a standing start in the wet, and it wasn’t just the first few yards either 😩😩
The result we all expected, but interesting to see the weight penalty of x-drive didn’t really show in any of the tests.
I can’t honestly think why, in the real world, you would now choose RWD over x-drive of ordering a new M3.

Best thing to do Joe, with the X Drive car, is set one of the M Buttons up, for RWD etc, so that once the car is up and hauling, you can flick the M button, have it in RWD, and take some of the drivetrain losses out of the equation, and see how much gap there is from that, M5 Simon.

Wow didn't expect such a difference.
I think the main reason why it’s harder to catch it, is because of the unsprung weight difference in the brakes. I love how light my CCBs feel when I’m driving it.

The 4 wheel drive system being heavier will/should balance out the fuel & driver weight issues. Amazing performance difference.

I am amazed how much quicker the X drive was. Why? Is it simply traction? The weight and traction enough to create such a wide discrepancy? I was surprised at the gap.

Amazing mate, I’m looking to change my 335d x drive tourer as its coming up to 3 years old, i would love the new m3 tourer but i think i will only be able to afford a 340 tourer x drive, what should i get petrol to diesel , please help me, after the last 18 months we have had with my wife’s cancer she is now on the road to recovery, but we still have a long way to go so I’m just praying for good news in 4 months, any way on a positive note my eldest daughter graduated with a 1st class honours in musical theatre last year and would love a west end job or cruise ship 🙏
Im thinkning about that xdrive, what if from 4th gear all power is going 100% on rear axle? The differnce in rolling is very small, and seems like xdrive manage the power better in rolling and kick down 🤔

XDrive extra 100 Lb weight addition is worth it.
The rolling tests might lead to the conclusion that BMW shovelled in a few extra horses with the X-Drive's software, so as to justify the car's higher price. I'm referring to like for like specs. If that were the case and I'd bought the rear drive model, I wouldn't be happy about it, regardless of intended purpose.

Why no Xdrive in RWD v RWD. Lots of people giving love and justifaction to AWD because it can do both, but no one has actually put switchable RWD to the test against pure RWD. Does the AWD actually do RWD as well as pure RWD. This is one test I want to see...!
LC won't activate in rwd on the xDrive, would make it very difficult to get two clean launches without LC.
I’d take the x drive over rwd. Safer

Thoughts on the GFV being so low on the new M3 xdrive? It is the one things putting me off going for it at the moment, an 85k car with a GFV of just 30k after 4 years...
That really is low... I guess it means you'll definitely have money in it by then.
