Spider-Man was legal in Revenge of Shinobi as Sega held a licence for the character at the time. Also it's an excellent game the music is done by Yuzo Koshiro too. Maybe worth playing again.
Opinions are subjective... BUT Phantasy Star IV is still one of my favourite/best RPGs I've ever played and still beat it once in a while. The story is actually really good and the art style holds up, cut scenes are gorgeous and it has genuinely impactful moments. Finally I'll say the music is REALLY good from top to bottom.

It's insanely overly frustrating and difficult, but fighting a Robotnik Scorpion to some dank beats is somehow satisfying. The intro almost makes it seem like the story is more interesting than any other Sonics.
Sonic Spinball is lot of fun.. I beat it a couple years ago on my modded wii with save states.. Lol.. Primarly used to save states on the last level when you gotta get all the way up there on the right....
Some classics really get shredded here. I think this is the first time I've heard that Revenge of Shinobi, one of my favorites of the generation, was a horrible game.
And Streets of Rage 2 doesn't make the top ten but Mega Man: The Wily Wars which is generally agreed to be a disappointing remake of the NES originals is way the fuck up there at #6 just because it's Mega Man. It couldn't be any more obvious this guy doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about and that he's a Nintendo fanboy who has never touched a goddamn Mega Drive in his life before making this video and gave each game maybe 3 minutes of dicking around before forming a half baked opinion on them because there's deadlines to meet after all. Primetime Eric Prime agrees...virtual fighter 2 is the worst game on the western mini easily, revenge of shinobi very low, toe jam and earl even lower...I stopped watching after those.
I honestly don’t get why Virtua Fighter wasn’t at the very bottom. The game is basically unplayable on Genesis. Even the likes of Kid Kamelion and Alex Kidd are at least perfectly playable irreguardless of how how one feels about them smh

You seriously ranked _Phantasy Star IV_ lower than _Alex Kidd, Virtua Fighter 2,_ and this barebones version of _Tetris_ that we all got. Even as someone who didn't grow up with this game, this is laughable. "Only twenty hours" of content? Not only are you prioritizing quantity over quality, but you're also harshly judging the game by modern standards. There were hardly any JRPGs in that era that were forty hours or more. "Exactly one" sidequest, huh? Well, fuck all of those Hunter's Guild missions that you can take, because those apparently don't count. I'll give you that the plot isn't especially stellar, but what *is* there is well-paced, with most every story beat being relevant to the overarching narrative. The only other game of the era that I can think of that matches its tightness is _Chrono Trigger,_ and that's a pretty high bar. This isn't even factoring in the multiple references to the previous games, of which you need to know precisely none of to enjoy the game. If you're playing the game in a bubble, you can just think, "Oh hey, that's some nice lore;" if you're familiar with the series as a whole, then it serves as a very nice shout out that fits in with the game being a celebration and the climax of the original series. And this isn't even talking about all of the good points that you ignored: the fantastic graphics; the numerous animations, which were quite the rarity even in late-era SNES games; the fact that the sound designers actually knew how to use the Mega Drive's sound card; the magic systems, which even include team attacks (not as good as _Chrono Trigger_ due to the way they're implemented, but still solid for what they are); the macro function… Hell, I'm sure there are more that I'm neglecting to mention. But hey, this is still ultimately your opinion, even if I feel that multiple aspects of it are suspect and flat-out incorrect. Do what you will.
I fully disagree as well they don’t have a clue what they are on about it’s like they just looked at the list of games. And googled the names to find info on them
Since when does Phantasy Star IV have one sidequest? Did you miss the, oh, entire list of them in the Hunters’ Guild? And the story’s still pretty good. Definitely structured and detailed for its day, and while it’s not exactly as fleshed out as your average contemporary RPG, and a remake would no doubt get meatier in a hypothetical modern remake, it’s aged far better than many of its contemporaries. As for the translation, I lived through the 90s era of not caring, and PSIV aas much better translated than many games of that day-even better than other games in its own series. It even bothers to rationalize a translation flub in the previous games. I certainly don’t mean to come off as a fangirl, but it demonstrably doesn’t have the flaws you say it does, or at least not to the extent you say it does.
These are the same people who laughed off some quality NES games on a NES knock-off console. They literally can't tell the difference between Action 52 and Little Nemo. They also generally get one or two obvious things wrong per list. Like when they forgot how many buttons the GBA has.

I'm guessing somebody else has already made this comment but, aren't you aware that by changing the language of the medga drive mini to Japanese, Meanbean Machine becomes Puyo Puyo?
Landstalker deserves so much higher. The controls are weird but the game eases you in so gently that by the time you have to do the really tricky jumps the review complains about you should have little trouble. And complaining about the censorship is weird considering it amounts to one 30 second scene being cut. The combat isn't the best but if anything it's too forgiving.
I am the one person on the Earth who loves Altered Beast! ^^ Probably one of the best bland mediocre games of that time. :D Still very playable, despite being short and so formulaic. And I gotta say, I don't agree at all with the order of the list! Very entertaining nonetheless ^^
@@chazdejesus2960 it was my first Mega Drive game, along with Moonwalker. So many memories... :D But to be fair, it's a very outdated game, there's games from that time that aged better. It's still good popcorn fun, though ^^
I can forgive Shining Force being so low on the list (even though the Camelot-era games are my favourites of all time), but I can't forgive the awful new 'Shining' games being referred to as good news for fans of the series! I do love these really long form lists tho - awesome job! :)
I absolutely LOVE Kid Chameleon, and I'm upset that it didn't make it higher. It is not only one of my favorite platformers on the Genesis but one of my favorite platformers of all time. I've had it in emulation form on just about every computer I've ever had, and in fact, have it on my mobile phone right now! The masks let you do far more than just shoot projectiles. One let you climb up a wall, turn into a tank, fly like a tornado, turn into a fly and fly, and (i believe) stick to things, shoot sound waves, and so many other things. The moving, wall of death, levels were hard as hell, the backgrounds and diverse levels were gorgeous, and it all still holds up fairly well today. This sounds like you guys simply played the first couple of levels and just gave up on it. Because the farther you go the better it gets. The ONLY thing I really ever had a problem with was that with 100 levels it didn't have a save mechanism. Not even a code to put in. So, if you died... and you would die... you had to start all over again. I've never beaten it to this day. I can't get past the windy city level.
One of the best things about this channel is that you folks pay attention to a games sound, so many others do not. I think it's a very important part of a game that is so often ignored.
Not gonna lie, I love Shining Force. Me and some buddies used to bunk off college, partake of the devils leaf and play Shining Force for hours on end. I'm not saying you're wrong having it so low down, just an observation of how rose tinted our nostalgia glasses can be.
No they're were wrong. Also a lot of entries would have been higher, if they actually played the games when they originally got released. I suspect they were born after the Megadrive/Genesis craze...
It was really nice that the only thing wrong with my number one game, “Comix Zone” was that they didn’t make more of them! At least it makes it that much cooooooooler 🥴 that Sketch Turner was my pony tail hero 🦸♂️
Seriously? There is nobody here to break a spear in the defence of Altered Beasts? I only played the arcade game but it was awesome, very interesting fantasy setting for a video game.
I always like Altered Beast ancient Greek aesthetics. At the time I remembered that I thought it was cool the controls had a dedicated buttons for punching and kicking. While I don't the game is great, I don't want to live in a world where Altered Beast isn't on the Sega Genesis Mini. If you ever want to see a good video game review of Altered Beast check out "Peter Reviews" on Mr Baffacake's channel.
Sword of Vermilion got pretty good reviews at the time of its release in Magazines. Very good game in my opinion and a good alternative to Phantasy Star II.
You can play Puyo Puyo here in the west as well !! All you have to do is change the language to Japanese in the settings menu of the SEGA GENESIS Mini. Do that will make ALL games on the mini turn into the Japanese version !!
yeah after they mentioned "Eternal Champions" I knew this was gonna be a shitty list. I also knew, they just google the names, because it was quite clear they never played the originals. Hell I even doubt they're old enough to even play some of the games they mention, hell even remember the console.
Revenge of Shinobi at 54! Smh, you’ve got to be kidding me. Earthworm Jim in the 40s: BS. It feels like anyone at triple jump old enough to have played these games when they came out must have had Super Nintendo’s. Absolutely appalling.
Monster World IV was also released on the 360 as part of the SVC Monster World Collection and on PS3 at the same time it was was released on the Wii's VC..
It's a small thing, but on the style of Comix Zone, I would say, Viewtiful Joe in a way was inspired by it at least with some it's art style and how the game plays out. Would be interested to know if the makers of Joe were inspired by Comix Zone at all for real or if I'm just grasping at straws.. but on the surface it does seem like it.
I think you were a little harsh on Vectorman since I'd say it's still a fun game to play. But I do agree it's practically criminal that Alien Storm, MUSHA and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are either foreign exclusives or missing entirely. Those are three of my favorites
Thank you for introducing me to Yu Yu Hakusho Makyou Toitsusen. I'm a long time fan of the show and yet I did not know about this game (along with most of these unlocalized games), what a treat!
Madou Monogatari is only the remake of the first PC98 game, 1. 2 and 3 were remade for the Game Gear and that was it, it's primarily a Japanese PC series. Pretty good game, with a few different endings, depending on the number of points you gather. Lord Monarch has a fun story mode, also, I quite liked it - it's funny and pleasant to play through, not 'too' hard either.
I wish someone takes the concept and makes a new game with it. Being a man (or woman) that can get orbs to change into various mythical creatures and fighting through ancient and strange environments.
I love how we all people can agree that PS4 and Revenge of Shinobi are too low. You guys are sleeping on Shining Force though; the second game is better but the first game is still really good. Also I don’t think the translations are that bad in either it or Phantasy Star, aside from the examples you singled out
There is technically a Dragon Slayer game releasing in the West this month. Trails of Cold Steel 3 is a subseries within a subseries within the Dragon Slayer series although Falcom doesn't refer to it as Dragon Slayer. The full title of the upcoming game should be Dragon Slayer 6: Legend of Heroes 13: Trails of Cold Steel 3 which not merely rolls from the tongue but rather stampedes over the edge of the tongue.
you are absolutely funny and I enjoyed watching your video. But, if I have to seriously look at the content, finding Virtua Fighter 2 head of Phantasy Star 4, Light Crusader and Eternal Champions makes no sense at all.
To answer your question Peter, Sonic 2 Edit: Have to say I'm a bit annoyed about how low Toejam & Earl is on the list, although I only ever owned the second one and I was obsessed with it. So for all I know the first blew Donkey's Kong.
I'm looking to get this and a SNES. I'm not a gamer these days but I've fond memories of owning those two consoles when I was a kid. Sad to see Altered Beast being brutalised here, I remember loving it. It'll be interesting to see what it's like now.
Kinda painful as a longtime Sega fan to see someone who has no idea about the majority of these games saying factually wrong things (1 sidequest in Phantasy Star 4? Really dude?), and rating all time classics low for no real reason. Its like he just randomized this list
I am totally an apologetic fan of TJE. It was big dumb coop fun. A few tweaks and the randomly generated levels and exploration coupled with silliness and soundtrack can really work.. oh and you can make your own beats. Wheeeeeee!
My friend (in his 40s) recently went to his moms house to clear out somethings and found all his brothers old gaming systems. From Atari, Ventrix, Sega Gensis/CD (two in one), SNES, Gameboy, Gamegear...etc. Even a Sega Master System. They were either missing cords or didn't work. Such a shame. The handhelds had batteries that burst and the acid ate everything inside. Only thing that worked was the Master System. I don't remember that one. Doubt its worth much then. Only good news is the one Ventrix worked and is worth almost $400.

I'm glad to see a fellow Mega Man Maker player.
Holy shmuk, Triple Jump quality content as fudge! Want more! Peter: every Star Wars Game!
I still wish Shining Force II was released over the original. It’s so much better
Note: I’m in the West, it’s not on my mini.
Agreed as it's such an awesome game! Was disappointed with how the ending played out though tbh
I'm guessing somebody else has already made this comment but, aren't you aware that by changing the language of the medga drive mini to Japanese, Meanbean Machine becomes Puyo Puyo?
What are you talking about? Columns is ALWAYS the first thing I look for when I see a Mega Drive
I just posted a comment saying I like Columns. It's a good game.
@@jaysmith2858 in my humble opinion Columns is the 2nd best puzzle game next to Puzzle Bobble.
@@WhereThereDude That's also a good game. In my opinion Tetris is still 'The daddy' of puzzle games.
Streets of Rage not in the top 10? Heresy
Landstalker is a masterpiece in my opinion.
I am the one person on the Earth who loves Altered Beast! ^^ Probably one of the best bland mediocre games of that time. :D Still very playable, despite being short and so formulaic.
And I gotta say, I don't agree at all with the order of the list! Very entertaining nonetheless ^^
Altered beast was amazing
@@chazdejesus2960 it was my first Mega Drive game, along with Moonwalker. So many memories... :D But to be fair, it's a very outdated game, there's games from that time that aged better. It's still good popcorn fun, though ^^
Have to agree, had it on the 360 collection and found it pretty good!
while not a good game it goes in to the I have 15 minutes to kill category of games.
@@topdamagewizard Dude you nailed it.
"Gunstar Heroes is Treasures greatest achievement"
*Ikaruga: Am i a joke to you*
20 minutes is enough of that game. Forever. Blue and red and nothing else as a colour scheme is super dull as this game is pretty darn repetitive.
@matt Hey. I play Toaplan games,
I love these long lists but I do think they’d be more fun if Ben and Peter did them together. Keep up the good work boys! :)
1:01:29 Sega Channel was NOT a dial-up service; the service was broadcasted by a local cable TV company.
I really enjoy these long lists. You guys make them so worth watching regardless of the topic. Can't wait to see more of these lists!
I can forgive Shining Force being so low on the list (even though the Camelot-era games are my favourites of all time), but I can't forgive the awful new 'Shining' games being referred to as good news for fans of the series! I do love these really long form lists tho - awesome job! :)
Well WE got Streets Of Rage 4, wonders never cease. Here' s to a return of Strider.
Thank you for this video. Because of it I'm going to buy all 3 versions of the Sega Mega Drive Mini. Again thank you TripleJump. You're the best.
I'm personally not a fan of it but I know people who played it back in the day and really love it so you're not alone.
Honestly while the Mega Drive port of Virtua Fighter 2 isn’t that good, it’s super fascinating to me and I love the way the game looks.
Yo, make a list for the Sega Genesis Mini 2 now!
One of the best things about this channel is that you folks pay attention to a games sound, so many others do not. I think it's a very important part of a game that is so often ignored.
Revenge of Shinobi was great.
@@wh-wjsboka7847 Yeah they were, PS1 generation.
No he is definitely wrong, about damn near everything in fact.
I like this list a whole lot despite not agreeing with pretty much anything.
I loved Strider! My friend had it on the SNES and we'd spend whole weekends trying to beat it, ugh the nostalgia
It was really nice that the only thing wrong with my number one game, “Comix Zone” was that they didn’t make more of them! At least it makes it that much cooooooooler 🥴 that Sketch Turner was my pony tail hero 🦸♂️
I'd like more of them myself. Could you imagine how tightly controlled and spectacular it would be if the SoR4 people made a new one?
I've been collecting all the games complete in box for the Sega! so i am hyped for this video!
Can I also say, the background music, which is used in majority of the lists, is amazing!
You can play Puyo Puyo here in the west as well !! All you have to do is change the language to Japanese in the settings menu of the SEGA GENESIS Mini. Do that will make ALL games on the mini turn into the Japanese version !!
Just going to say that you saved me a job
Toejam & Earl at 55 makes this list instantly irrelevant
Shining force 2 is one of the best games ever
Love the big lists boys! Keep up the great work all around!!
Did you seriously put Wrestleball, whatever that is, above Vectorman, ToeJam and Earl, and Phantasy Star IV????
I feel like you’ve done “shocking” placement so we type and the video gets a push
Well played
Ohhhh boy your placement of Shining Force makes me want to call you more names...AND YOU SAY THE BROKEN GBA REMAKE IS BETTER????
this list is absurd, Phantasy Star 4 is a top 3 genesis game just behind Comix Zone and Mutant League Football
I agree, putting Phantasy Star 4 so far down on the list instantly kills the credibility of the entire list :\
Not to mention he threw Altered Beast under the bus within the first four games..? Like.. what?
yeah after they mentioned "Eternal Champions" I knew this was gonna be a shitty list.
He opens with “the concept of a mini console is fantastic... done right * shows SNES classic *. Implication Genesis mini = shit.
The lack of Shining Force II on the Western release was one of my primary deciders against getting one. Really enjoyed that series.
Monster World IV was also released on the 360 as part of the SVC Monster World Collection and on PS3 at the same time it was was released on the Wii's VC..
Sonic spinball was one of the hardest games I've ever played but I remember really loving it as a kid.
Yeah
Anyone else think they were listening to the last podcast on the left for a second during altered beast?
I think there's a place in Hell for people speaking poorly of Revenge of Shinobi, which is one of the greatest action-patformer of the 16-bits era.
Good point
I think you were a little harsh on Vectorman since I'd say it's still a fun game to play. But I do agree it's practically criminal that Alien Storm, MUSHA and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are either foreign exclusives or missing entirely. Those are three of my favorites
Wikipedia disagrees with you about Sword of Vermillion
*"SLAP-FIGHT"* sounds more akin to a game *a group of friends play whilst at a Convention,* rather than an actual name of a *Shoot-Em-Up!!*
Agreed
I like Altered Beast! Bit harsh there Peter...
I wish someone takes the concept and makes a new game with it. Being a man (or woman) that can get orbs to change into various mythical creatures and fighting through ancient and strange environments.
@@AlmightyPolarBear Yeah, the concept is ridiculous and I love it and I want more of it. Keep it as a side scroller though!!
I love how we all people can agree that PS4 and Revenge of Shinobi are too low. You guys are sleeping on Shining Force though; the second game is better but the first game is still really good. Also I don’t think the translations are that bad in either it or Phantasy Star, aside from the examples you singled out
Also space harrier 2 and Alex Kidd are way too high
To answer your question Peter, Sonic 2
Edit: Have to say I'm a bit annoyed about how low Toejam & Earl is on the list, although I only ever owned the second one and I was obsessed with it. So for all I know the first blew Donkey's Kong.
Am i the only one who thinks Vectorman should have been placed higher?
Nah, I agree with you. It looks so beautiful in the visual aspect of it. It might have bad controls, but I never played it before.
Why the heck Streets of Rage 2 is not nearer the first place?
At first I thought this was going to include things like the sonic special stages hence “every sega genesis mini game ranked”
Sounds like it was written by someone who wasn't old enough to have a Megadrive in 1989.
Or a SNES fanboy, who only played less then ten games on the Genesis
I bet that it’ll be fun when you review the SEGA Mega Drive II!
(And yes, there’s 2 versions, one for Japan, the other for America and PAL regions)
I am totally an apologetic fan of TJE. It was big dumb coop fun. A few tweaks and the randomly generated levels and exploration coupled with silliness and soundtrack can really work.. oh and you can make your own beats. Wheeeeeee!
Shinobi and Phantasy star so low on the list? like worse than columns and wrestleball? worse than fucking tetris? this must be a joke.
Why isn't Phantasy Star 4 higher on the list?
8:42 RE: *"ETERNAL CHAMPIONS"*
- WOAH! WAIT A MINUTE!!✋ is that *_..."Inspector Gadget"????????????????_*
*MIND =* 💥
My friend (in his 40s) recently went to his moms house to clear out somethings and found all his brothers old gaming systems. From Atari, Ventrix, Sega Gensis/CD (two in one), SNES, Gameboy, Gamegear...etc. Even a Sega Master System.
They were either missing cords or didn't work. Such a shame. The handhelds had batteries that burst and the acid ate everything inside. Only thing that worked was the Master System. I don't remember that one. Doubt its worth much then. Only good news is the one Ventrix worked and is worth almost $400.
: (
Vector man 2 was sick
Ehh partway through I really started to disagree with your list.
Most of the video is "It's not a bad game but ***destroying the game***", at some point you should just name your videos "Here is a list of things somewhat ranked that we hate and here are the reasons why".
