I posted up a video titled "Hero 5 Black vs Hero 4 Silver" a bit ago, and you guys overwhelmingly responded in favor of the Hero 5 Black! Why? To 'future proof' the videos and be up to speed with the most currently technology. As I got it for the same price that I could get a Hero 4 Silver for, it made sense. Turns out, I also managed to get a discount on the accessories! (batteries + charger + mic cable, w00t)
I received the GoPro Hero 5 Black and got to work on installing it on the helmet! The mic adapter w/ the USB-C connection from GoPro is a bit on the... large side. I mounted it with velcro to the side of the helmet so that I'm able to remove it. I used industrial strength 10lb velcro, but it seems a little loose. When pulling on it, it holds strong, but I don't want it flapping around on the helmet while riding.
I'll be testing it all out tomorrow on a ride! Hopefully it all performs as well as it looks, we shall see, and I'll report up my feedback in the next upload :)

Wow bro, you're the man. I was extremely disappointed after testing the new set-up with my trusty Sony ECM-CS3, only to find out crazy clipping and distortion. Thanks for the recommendation, wife is going to kill me for spending $47 on yet another mic.
But tell her it's worth it, it's the last mic you'll need for the Hero 5, haha

I need to get my mic adapter.... there's some footage in my channel of the quality riding with it... it is not the greatest, but can give you (or whomever is thinking about getting one) an idea.
Checked it out, cool stuff! I got the mic adapter off Amazon, apparently people were having trouble finding them for awhile but they're available on there as of this post.

Definitely a bit ridiculous how that mic adapter is as big as it is....you should get the industrial Velcro to mount it. It’s not fuzzy, has plastic barbs on both sides and doesn’t budge, at all. Check it out. Home Depot sells it. 👍🏼
nice content man and editing!!! I haven't been able to do any motovlog stuff since they stop making the smaller 3.5 adapter for the hero 3+:(.you have any idea why they discontinued the smaller mic adapters?
I might switch to your set up! Besides the adapter adding on more dead weight, the look and profile of your set up is sleek!
Awesome piece of tech... I just got one too, but... Let aside the "brick" mic adapter... How perfect would this be if it was compatible with the SENA audio pack... Now when you ride with your girl, you gotta have two mics in the bucket!

Yessir! Don't use the Sony ECM-CS3 mic if you're using a Hero 5 Black though, terrible quality (clipping and popping since in stereo.) Use this mic instead, works great! - amzn.to/2oGrfBc

To any aspiring motovloggers stick with the Hero 4 black, they are dirt cheap plus the quality is ridiculously good and almost indistinguishable. And you get cool after market products with it as well, upgrade when the 6 comes out. The 5 is really no needed for motovlogging !
+ElectricRides There's not a ton of differences between the 4 Black and 5 Black, but there are some key differences, such as image stabilization, which makes a big difference when on a Harley. Just my .02

I know it has been almost a full year since you posted this, but I do have a question:
- How's the velcro holding up, with the rain, usage, etc?
I am seriously thinking of buying the go pro 6, but the brick (adapter) is an issue. That's why I liked very much your velcro idea. Seems to solve the problem.

Please tell us you recorded at 4K for the first few times, Block! (seeing you set it at 1080p, made me cry a little... brand new camera, capable of great resolution... and you didn't show setting it higher!!) :p
And yes, that external mic block is freaking massive, 2/3 the size of the camera! Yeesh. :(
Just recorded today (vid out Friday!) and I recorded in 1080p@60fps b/c I wanted to try out the image stabilization. You'll have to check the vid Friday and let me know what you think! Definitely going to be recording in some higher res formats here soon :D

I just did a similar mount on my helmet with the hero5 black and your video helped a lot with mic set up. How has this set up worked for you since the upload? B/c they had to incorporate the ability to run power through it for some reason since it's USB-C. Just GoPro flexing their technology muscle when it's not necessary. So dumb.

For this video or in the helmet? In the video it's just an iPhone 6s Plus mic. In the helmet, I'm using a Sony ECMCS3 lav mic w/ wind screens over each end.

So curious ...but will a 3.5mm jack adapter like for the phones work??? I have one for my beats to plug into my pixel and I have an adapter so I don't always have to bluetooth it and the microphone works thru it to answer calls. That way u don't have a brick added to ur helmet??

I just ordered my mic and adapter for the hero5 black. Now I know exactly what my setup might look like because I just noticed you have the same exact helmet and camera placement as me. Nice. Does the adapter cord length allow you to put the adapter inside the helmet at all though? Might look weird with all that plus a possible sena on the helmet as well.
Nah I've wanted to put the adapter on the inside but won't work w/ where I have the camera, cord isn't long enough. I wish!
Yeah I see than now that I got the adapter. But this is how I got mine just with the standard helmet mount. The angle of the adapter wire holds in in place so it won't come lose.

Do you ever have audio issues? I always have problems with my 5 when I motovlog. Like when I turn it on from the top bottom the audio doesn't work at all, and it always has a static noise in the back round
It might be the mic I'm using. Idk but I need to get it right, just seems like there's always something going wrong, with the 4 it always worked good

How do you incorporate a Sena or such device with the GoPro? In order to hear your buddies. I kind of get it when the Gopro is on the helmet but if it's on your handlebars, how are you getting audio? Just syncing up the video? Thanks in advance.

No other USB-C to 3.5 adapters work in the GoPro Hero 5, nobody's been able to find one that's compatible. My helmet is an HJC IS-MAX 2 (modular)

What is the external microphone you are using ? I kinda found most of the 3.5mm microphones record only static noise

With the Hero 5, yes. Whenever I bought mine anyways, the GoPro brand one is the only one that will actually work w/ the Hero 5.
