*I CHANGED THE TITLE FROM “IN DEFENSE OF ROMANCE” I think the new one is more fitting and i was on the fence anyway
Thanks for watching! Stay until the end to see updated outro!
I wanted to make this comment to reiterate that I think that whatever the writers do with sydney and carmy will be just fine, and their relationship can be as intense as it is and it still be platonic I just wanted to explain how some might see it that way! Them being together and speaking is all I need baby!
Shipping can be annoying I know but as long as it’s not gross and weird(you know what i’m saying) It should just be seen as fun!
I love seeing all of your perspectives it’s opened my eyes to different ways of looking at things so thank you for that!
    *edit
I’ve seen a lot of replies commenting on my wording of their relationship saying them being in a traditional romantic relationship would be a “elevation” or “more” than what they have now. I in no way had the intention to devalue platonic relationships of any kind, i was more referring to physical intimacy in romantic relationships similar to what carmy and claire have.
I apologize for my ignorance and I will try and better my wording in the future!

My main gripe with M/W relationships in media is the fact that there seems to be a lower standard when it comes to writing them (for example: Marinette and Adrian, Bella and Edward, Anastasia and Christian, etc). Sexism is so prevalent here (with the man being dom/power imbalances) and it’s so frustrating as a person who likes slow and sweet romance. I hate it when the love interest is shoddily written too, because there’s no chemistry!!!
There ARE good relationships such as Jim and Pam, but I hope in the future people can understand that power imbalances/2d characters are not it

@@s.m5576 it’s the same as writing any other ship (WLW or MLM) I wish I could help more but my words aren’t end all be all so take this with a grain of salt, But here is my “advice” (or things that work for me):
      - observe M/W couples you like in media. Why do you like them and why do they work?
      - make sure they spend enough time with each other and have time to know one another! Relationships fail because the love interest is introduced just to be a love interest.
      - make both of your characters 3D! What makes them tick? Their insecurities and goals? Why do they love the other person? Etc
You shouldn’t rely on my comment only since tbh I’m not qualified enough (after all I’m just a guy (gender neutral) on the internet) but I hope that can point you in the right direction

I don't know how I feel saying this but you're so right and this applies to real life as well. Me and my bestie are both woc(multiracial lineage. We're coloured women in South Africa) and are considered above average looking. I know if I go out in public I'm going to have people staring at me or complimenting me. Yet put me in a room full of white men(under the age of 40, very important) and I automatically know I'm not going to get approached. I just assume they don't see me that way(with romantic or sexual intention). It's kind of reassuring but a messed up mentality to have and I don't know how to...."fix" it

One thing I don't like about gay ships in fandom is how quick fandoms are to force strict gender roles. There could be two masculine or two feminine characters of the same gender and fandom acts like they just have to make one of them the opposite so it can still fit their heteronormative cisnormative ideas of LGBT+ characters
(for example, two feminine gay men characters being changed into one hyper-masculine man and one feminine man so it's "acceptable" to straight people's ideas of us LGBT+ people even if the author of the story specified they intended both characters to both be gender non-conforming)

while i agree I would be careful phrasing it like that, especially for sapphic relationships because butches/studs arent represented at all. I do get what you mean, most people for achillean ships do that but I'd say it gets a tiny bit different for sapphic ships due of the existence of butches/studs, also 90% the people who like sapphic ships the most are sapphics so I wouldnt say that fans try to fit a heteronormative/cisnormative narrative.
Truly I get it but historically speaking feminine man and masculine women have been a huge thing in queer spaces so it doesnt always fit those ideas

@@sapphoscorner I'm GNC and queer myself and vary widely in how I present myself. Butches/studs and twinks will forever be a fundamental part of the queer community. Drag, trans people, gender non-conformity, studs/butches, twinks & and general gender variance/gender expression variance is important to our community and always will be. It's why I said "There could be two masculine or two feminine characters of the same gender" and not "there could be two masculine *men* and feminine *women* ". I never specified gender because that wasn't my point.
My problem is that hetero people in fandom often act like they absolutely need to know "who's the top", "who wears the pants", "so who's the man in the relationship" and otherwise ask invasive, uncomfortable questions even if it's completely unrelated to the story because they feel the need to project heteronormativity and gendered stereotypes onto people who don't neatly fit into societies ideas of "acceptable queerness"
Sometimes people are butch 4 butch, femme 4 femme, twink 4 twink, bear 4 bear and it happens just as often in real life as butch 4 femme or twink 4 bear/otter relationships and those relationships can be just as fulfilling as any other. This also isn't against butch/stud 4 femme or twink 4 bear relationships either because once again, these are common, normal, and can be just as fulfilling.
My problem is when people cannot stand to see characters who don't fit ideas of "acceptable queerness" and change the characters until they do fit those ideas. Especially because sometimes the person who takes on a more stereotypically masculine presentation may not always be the one "wearing the pants in the relationship" or be the top or whatever other heteronormative assumptions that are often made in fandom by hetero people in fandom spaces and vice versa.
Sorry for the long response, I just felt it was important to clarify my thoughts being that I'm GNC and queer myself and anyone who's actively against GNC queer people needs to educate themselves and change their perspective.

People ignore the fact that aro characters are still aro - I know aro people can date, but we get next to nothing, and I’m so sure if I shipped a canon gay man with a woman just because “Gay men can date women in real life” I would look like a clown! I hate whenever a relationship in a show or movie feels forced. One of the more infamous examples of this is from Star vs. The forces of Evil. In the beginning, Star and Marco were friends, and the creators intended to have the series progress with their friendship. It was only until the ship between them became very popular that they tried to write them together, but it was so clunky and felt like fan service, just done really poorly. Basically the whole fandom agrees the show was amazing until like the last season or so.

It seems to me that when writers don't intend for the characters to have a romantic relationship, that the outcome of the relationship is often much more authentic and engaging to viewers because the relationship isn't built using romantic formulas we've all seen before. And we like authentic relationships and want to see them be as close as possible and to a lot of people that means romance.

This especially from what I’ve seen happens with interracial and gay “couples” (putting quotes around it because in the show they aren’t together).
The characters can have such a deep and nuanced connection and THATS when the writers don’t want to make them a relationship. Of course you don’t have to all the time and platonic relationships are very meaningful and gorgeous things. I for one just think it’s odd that there’s a lack of romance with things like this. If the character was either white or a woman/man instead, it would almost instantly be perceived as a romantic plot.
Personally though, I like Syd and Carmy either way. I think their relationship is very interesting and I’d like to see the path it takes.

One thing I wish people understood about shipping is that there doesn't have to be a reason for why someone ships a particular pair. There's a common belief that it's wrong to ship characters or rare pairs who haven't met or don't show chemistry. However, many people ship based on their own vision, or because they like the characters' color palettes, ship names, or personalities, hell some people ship characters only because they find both characters attractive. Shipping doesn't have to follow canon and doesn't need a reason-though it can have one.
One of my favorite ships that I'm currently obsessed with exists only in my imagination because both characters wear uniforms that expose their chests. That's it. Canonically, one character doesn't like the other, platonically or romantically, but does that stop me? No, and it doesn't have to. In my mind, I can envision that they love each other without relying on canon. I can happily ship these characters since they don't have much screen time together, and when they do, there's no animosity. This allows me to create my own relationship for them.
People don't need to justify why they ship a particular pair, as long as it's healthy, legal, and morally right.
There's also a huge misconception about shipping. Many think shippers are just obsessive fans who believe their ship must become canon, and that if it doesn't, it's wrong. and while there are a lot of shippers who think like this, In reality, many shippers rely solely on fanon (fan-created content) and don't care if their ship becomes canon. This is especially true when a show doesn't revolve around romance. I'm aware that my rare pair won't become canon, and I don't want it to. I ship it for fun, not because I believe it will happen. This is particularly true for the multishipper side of fandoms, where fans enjoy shipping multiple pairings within a single fandom.

    • @bug7461
      @bug7461 Месяц назад +14

I agree that shipping is often misunderstood by those unfamiliar with fandom culture. I also ship multiple pairings with character that haven't interacted with each other in canon: Kaeya and Childe from Genshin Impact, because of fan interpretations of the games lore. Another ship is Todoroki and Sero from MHA just because they interacted one time where they exchanged manga lol. Shipping is fun and I think people need to become less judgemental to people having harmless fun

    • @lunchlessbaghead
      @lunchlessbaghead Месяц назад +4

Oh boy, yeah, shippers have a hugely bad rep due to the most vocal being vocal for the wrong reasons. I come from the good ol', and kinda controversial, Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom, where I think most people outside of it know it from the awful ship wars and death threats/doxxing of the show crew in attempts to get their ship canonized (coughcough Klance coughcough). On the other hand, I also come from the Detroit: Become Human fandom, where one of the most popular and simultaneously out of left field ships is between two characters who never meet, one who is a minor antagonist and asshole and the other who pops up post credits with zero lines for like 10 seconds max (aka Reed900). The latter became popular due entirely to fanon interaction, with tons of fanart, fanfics, and even some full-length fanfilms, while the former is a typical case of canon chemistry that doesn't go anywhere but still has a ginormous following. A lot of klance shippers held hope of their ship being canon (all klance fans will remember the KICK/"klance is canon, king" movement) and in some cases went way too far, while Reed900 fans have never expected canon content for their ship because it's something they made up on their own just because they could.
What do these two drastically different fandoms have in common? They ship because it's fun. It brings people together and gives characters a little more life through romance and all the complicated feelings and scenarios that can entail. Both ships are, as you put it, legal, morally right, and about as healthy as two traumatized teens and a dick detective and his new robot partner can get (depending ofc on what fanon you're looking at, but the generally accepted aren't completely toxic). Whether their ship will or ever had hopes to be canon doesn't matter as much as the fandom itself and the content it creates. Shipping, like the canon itself, is for the joy and entertainment of its audience :)

I am completely aware that they will never get together because they interacted once, nor do I care if they do, it is quite literally just for my own enjoyment. And truely you can quite literally ship whoever just for your enjoyment as long as it is legal. Even though you ship is some may care to a large extent it should only be for your enjoyment and can be for no reason at all.

None of the other characters are that on first look (you find out she’s a doctor immediately you assume she’s smart, the other characters you’d have to know them to find out they’re smart.) with her there’s nothing to “find out” it’s all laid out perfectly. If two characters are getting closer and closer, it's most likely they'll become a couple (especially if they're of opposite sexes thanks to heteronormativity) as if it's the only natural progression, which I don't think has to be true. People can have deep and real bonds without experiencing sexual and romantic attraction to each other.
I do appreciate and enjoy a good written romance and I can get invested in the couple's relationship dynamic, but it's way harder to escape romance than to find it, as an example, I read A LOT of webtoons, most involve romance in a way or another, if it doesn't, they tend to be way less popular. Also people will ship regardless if there's actual romance or not, which I have no problem with, people have their own interpretations, but again feels like too many people see relationships as incomplete or not fully developed if it isn't romantic, or worse, that a character/person needs to have a partner to be happier. I'm a straight (trans) guy, I can relate to romance and attraction, but I wish more times a sucessfull journey didn't involve falling in love along the way when there's so much else to explore and those things keep getting the backseat. I will forever love that Luke stayed single in Star Wars, it's not always you see the hero get a sister instead of a lover lol (Obligatory while I understand people's frustration and feel this way too, I'm not endorsing harrassing creators or fans/shippers who are happy with the story, that's different and just disgusting).

i love the bear fan art. it’s so hard to come by i’m really happy you made some! personally i’m torn on the romance between the two. as much as they’ve been building it up, they’ve also been tearing it down. they’re always building tension between characters and exploring their individual relationships (friendly, romantic, familial, familial in a friendship way, the works) and i feel like syd and carmy’s relationship could go either way. as much as it would be nice to see them be close friends, it would also be nice to see them together, all depending on how it’s written. [POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!] as it stands in the show now, they could rebuild claire and carmy’s relationship and leave syd and carmy’s bond as platonic. as syd is prepping to quit working with carmy, they could be competitive rivals with tension of all sorts. claire and carmy could fully break it off, leaving him single (since he’s so unbelievably mentally ill and not in the headspace for something as serious as a romantic relationship, which could also be shown to be worked on). or, the two could fully end it and carm ends up with syd. there’s so many different ways it could go and listing them all out i think i’m excited to see what they do, as long as they don’t royally mess up the writing with their choices.

I love a little fan service where every ship (that's between two consenting adults) is given its little scene. They focus on the main idea of the show while also making (almost) everyone happy!

This was my first time watching your video and i loved it. To me, it definitely feels like a dog whistle.
"No they could never be together, they're the same person, it's like a student and a teacher, men and women can be friends" meanwhile those same people say "i like syd and Marcus together, Claire and Carmy are endgame".
When we've only seen Claire like 3 times and no actual build up was put into the show. Syd has shown no actual intetests in marcus other than quitting together and being a human being to him when his mom died.
It gives, we can fathom the process of a white man organically desiring a black woman. Ignoring the chemistry of the under the table scene and the alleyway panic attack. Hell even the apt scenes. I just feel all the people that just immediately shut down the thought have a bias whether they realize it or not

It probably has to do with me being aroace, but romance in media is rarely something I look for in media. I’ll pick up a romance series or do some shipping but you have to make me really invested in the characters first. Like as long as the relationship doesn’t get in the way of a character’s arc or there’s a potential of a relationship leading to more interesting things, then yeah, it would be cool if they got together. However, if the relationship brings their arc or the entire story to a screeching halt, absolutely not.

And, surprising no one, i lot of people asked if we are dating, and when I say “a lot of people” i mean most of the people that perceived us.

I love how you're talking about how it's getting less heteronomrative and showing Kaz and Inej, like YES they are the gayest straight couple I agree 1000%
edit: On the topic at hand, personally I just prefer platonic relationships between characters, esp female/male. I don't mind characters dating, my characters occasionally do that too, as long as it doesn't feel like "your characters have a good relationships and are a man and woman? Dang better pair those spares"
I haven't seen The Bear but if the characters work platonically, why not leave them that way? (even though the audio in that scene was suggestive for sure)
I know it's a personal thing for me in particular because when I dealt with platonic heartbreak before I was asked "did you maybe have feelings for him" so. so. many. times. And like, no, deal with it, I am falling apart because of someone I would never want to kiss, is that so hard to believe?
A show doing that would probably not make a real life difference societally, but I'm often glad if things are played platonically (or gayly, that's fine too, immediately more interesting than the straight default ship)

Every time Claire shows up on screen I sigh. The show can have any romance with anyone, that's not why I'm watching it. But Claire herself makes my blood boil. The actress is great and it's not her fault that the character is a copy of every female love interest with the most lukewarm "backstory" in an attempt to add a lazy dimension to the character. I have heard her monologue about little Jimmy breaking his arm so many times it's not even funny. She's a failed manic pixie dream girl who's meant to look pretty and distract Carmy. If she had literally anything interesting and not stereotypical about her I might actually like her but it makes me want Syd and Carmy to get together even more. At least Syd can actually stand on her own as a character and has actual tension with Carmy.

I feel like I agree with the sentiment that I just want to see syd and Carmy interact more in general, especially after last szn whether that be romantically or platonic. That being said I don’t think a lot of people are putting enough emphasis in the convo on black women love interest representation, and I would argue that the representation of that is more important than to see a male and female platonic relationship. Syd is black and you can’t separate that from her character or your argument. People seem to care so much about representation in some areas(white lgbt) but when poc are added straight or not there is less advocation. No shade but for these characters specifically it will never just be about wanting to see a male female platonic relationship, it’s not that simple.

As an aroace person, I do crave more platonic male/female relationships in media, and it’s always something I will advocate for. Romance is considered a universally felt feeling and it can be kind of alienating for those who don’t feel that way quite so easy or at all. It’s hard seeing what could be a beautiful male/female friendship turn into a romance pretty much every single time, often seemingly (NOT ALL THE TIME THO) just because they’re both of the opposite sex.
HOWEVER. I also strongly believe that people should really just ship whoever they want, canon relationship or no (as long as the characters are both similar ages/just isn’t proship) I have no problem with individual ships. Everyone is free to interpret any given fictional relationship however they want, there is no right answer anyway. ❤ That’s what fictional media is for. It’s an art, art is meant to be interpreted different ways by everyone who views it. :)

The romance is so much more compelling when they actually care for each other (without romantic / s*xual intentions) and instead help each other grow. I think that’s why I always liked ships like Kataang, Klance, and even Jack and Rose because their foundation is rooted in friendship and growth. They need each other, not just romantically.

I’m in the middle as well when it comes to shipping. I do it myself and I’m fine if the ship I enjoy doesn’t develop in a show I enjoy. But, if people are gonna do romance, at least do it well. Don’t just start a relationship and call it a day.
Such as… (spoilers for Brooklynn 99 season 3) when Jake and Amy get together. I was really excited because the writers did a great job implementing small moments of chemistry between the two characters, where I enjoyed seeing the two enjoy their time together. It was fun! And it was awesome when they finally started dating, but after that I felt like the sparks were sorta gone. Sure they talked about how they loved each other and it was acknowledged that they were in a romantic relationship repeatedly, but it was missing the small moments of chemistry. The moments where they just sorta enjoy their time together and are on the same wavelength and you just seem them naturally exist together.
Just because you started a romantic relationship between two characters doesn’t mean the work is done and people are happy. You gotta keep working on it and keep the train going with fuel, much like a real romantic relationship.

As far as Syd and Carmy are concerned, I do see the chemistry between them and I sensed some very intentional open ended scenes that were placed to leave the door open for something romantic to develop. However, I don’t see that being a major plot point, nor do I see it happening for a while. I’m big fan of subtle stolen moments and slow burns that are so slow you’re barely aware that it’s building instead of grand romantic gestures.
I actually immediately got the sense that they would organically acknowledge a possible attraction between them way further down line, but maybe not necessarily act on it.
Or if they did act on it, it would happen for a brief period of time when they are both in slightly better places in their lives, yet still end the show with them ultimately amicably going their separate ways. Something sort of akin to La La Lands couple arc.
They are also leaning towards them being on equal footing/positions. So I don’t really know if the power dynamics will be much of an issue.

Its frustrating to see a potential strong relationship between women, only for it to be sidelined for a shallow relationship with a man, or have it strictly for the male gaze, where it is hyper sexualized. Even seeing a strong, powerful relationship between a man and woman is what I'm hoping for. There doesn't need to be a kiss for it to be a true bond. give me SOMETHING more than a shallow make out out scene and basically zero chemistry

While you were talking, I noticed your language in relation to friendship and romance- you implied that a romantic relationship developing between Sydney and Carmy was an elevation or something “more than” what they already had. As an aromantic person, I always see this EVERYWHERE. Many people believe that friendships can’t be intimate, and that romance is a “logical and obvious next step” for any deeply invested relationship. It’s okay to view a relationship like Sydney and Carmy’s as romantic, but platonic bonds can be like that as well! There is no strict definition describing what romance and friendship is.

I’ve been kinda scared away from shipping ANY characters (regardless of gender) because I was so put off by the shipping wars and got really disgusted, as people focused more on that than the plot of the story, but!
Even I think they’d be a cute couple, tbh, idc if they stay friends or date, cuz they’re just so good together!

Just woke up and glad this is fresh!
    My personal take into this,
I enjoy romance. I'm a very romantic silly person but I don't entirely make it a serious thing. I prefer to switch around what I ship and like, occasionally making huge poly ships that can be like 6 people if I really don't care and just want smooching. But it is frustrating to see the way... people get so hung up on it. In an example of fighting other people, forcing people to take your same views on a certain people, insulting other ships.
People tend to forget that as much as people like to ship, most of the time it's still never going to be Canon and that should be OKAY. That's the fun part of being a fan.
Another frustration is the rather white able bodied focus on characters even when there are gay ships. Like- when anyone of color is involved it HAS to be with a white person in some way then it becomes the main half of the damn ship. Especially so... harsh on the POC character if they turn out to be mean in the slightest of ways or it involves their development.

i'm pretty into the "they're just friends" train, but i totally agree!! let people have fun!! i personally interpreted them to be very far apart in age (considering the difference in experience, but maybe also cause ayo just looks very young) so i just never looked at them that way since the beginning of the show. maybe that also influenced the fact that i do like claire's character... i really liked that she's kind of seen through rose colored glasses, because we're seeing her through carmy's eyes! i assumed we would get more character development for her getting into season 3, but she kind of disappeared?? at least until the episode i'm in, i haven't finished it yet. anyways, people should get to ship whoever they want as long as it's consensual

Some of my friends told me tht I have too many straight ocs but I only do that because I and a straight cis women so I relate and have more interest in those relationships. I still engage with lgbtq relationships but not often so i just love romance in general and try to watch whatever i can of it.😭

sydcarmy my beloveds. honestly, showrunners not intending to pursue a ship has never stopped me from shipping them. i adore their understanding of eachother and i sincerely hope that anyone who takes issue with sydney’s race gets the help they need.

As probably aroace person I don't get why having fun platonic relationship, for some people always has to end up with them being together. I love ships but sometimes fun friendship is better than a romance for me

Shipping culture does mostly force the author to make the both characters together. One example I see is keeper of the lost cities, Sophie and Keefe (two characters that had MAJOR chemistry) ended up being together (I'm not complaining much since I'm a shiper) but I think Shannon Messaged (the author) was "forced" to do it cuz of the fans MAJOR demands, I truly believe that Shannon wanted Sophie to get with Fitz (another character) but had to change plans. ANYWAYS I haven't watched The bear yet but after the "table scene) I kinda ship them😫😫🔪🔪

while i don’t ship it personally (as personally I enjoy how much the bear deals with non-romantic but still very meaningful/deep relationships) I think the dynamic is very interesting… your input on this topic is really insightful and as per usual the art is amazing :]

great video, GORGEOUS ART, our opinions r really neck n neck, I just love Carmy and Sydney period and I feel like we don't get enough of them, whether they stay platonic or the writers discover a relationship, I'm all for it. I feel like we never see them talk to eachother enough, and when they do like in this season, they're not saying what they really feel. So here's to more honesty and more scenes period w them together !

my personal thoughts is that i wish people explored initimate relationnships in ways other than romantic. there's still this prevelant idea that romance is the highest form of love, and every relationship that has a specific level of intimacy just HAS to mean it's romantic because "there's no way they're just friends!" but i think in many cases a relationship would actually be more MORE interesting if it was platonic or otherwise non-romantic, and making it such would just make fit the mold in a less interesting way.
and i have to say i do actually like romance a lot sometimes, it's just that it's VERY rare i see a platonic relationship that doesn't get interpreted as romantic, and sure i can't control how people think of it but i do wish people would open their minds to the idea of non-romantic intimacy and in turn not get mad when someone doesn't ship something bc i've definitely seen that happen lol
(also i do acknowledge that for interracial and queer ships there is definitely a bias when ppl pull the "why cant they just be friends?" card and i am not about that, this isn't about any specific ship but rather a general statement of how dynamics are precived)

This video was super interesting and oddly specific to me haha! Both The Bear and Xfiles have always been fixations of mine, so it was awesome to hear you talk about them; cause not a lot of creators I like do. So many fandoms have a habit of demonizing ships, both LGBTQ and hetero, that they don't agree with; which is sad because I have a lot of fun gushing over fictional couples I enjoy. It's interesting in cases where it affects both the fandom and creator. I personally only view sydcarmy as platonic, but everyone interprets media differently and there's no shame as long as its its not hurting anyone(and the ship is legal). I typially hate forced romance in shows/movies but ughhh mulder and scully's relationship makes me weak lmao(I love them). I'd love to hear you talk more about them!

I love romance a lot and though i see the love for platonic relationships i feel like some get a little political at times. Wanting them be just friends is good but going into a rage party can sometimes just upset people. Theres been fandoms ive seen where they fight over it and it can be exhausting. Not only to the writers but i feel to the public too. I feel like when sharing oppinions abt these things we need to also remind ourselves that people are affected and for all we know we could be killing someones love for a show by acting in this manner. Whether we have one opinion or the other we should just chill and share our thoughts respectfully! Thats just my opinion tho anyone is free of their own 🤓👉👉
