Ed was a bonafide free safety and Troy was a bonafide strong safety. Ed was the most complete free safety of all time. Troy was the DEFINITION of a strong safety. Arguably the hardest hitter of all time. He was an outstanding run stopper. Both of em have rings. Both future hall of famers.
Could you imagine if Troy and Ed played on the same team, playing opposite of each other, talk about a No Fly Zone.. both of them were the best at their positions during their careers.
And if you add Champ Bailey and Ty Law at cornerback, it's going to be a run-heavy offense, cause who in the right mind will want to throw to any of these guys.
Dawkins could play the way Reed did and the way Troy did. Fact is - he did do that. No one was asked to do, and did as much, as Dawkins did at the safety position since Ronnie Lott.
Exactly this, i love Ed Reed, the man could do anything and was far better than Troy in coverage. But Troy's ability to do the unthinkable, like timing the snap and jumping over the line of scrimmage to tackle a QB. I've never seen that before, haven't seen it since and i'd be surprised if i saw it again. Troy's brain worked on an entirely different plane of metaphysics. Just different gravy altogether
I swear Ed Reed's half of the video is Bill's love letter to Ed Reed. He has Tom Brady quite possibly the greatest player to have lived sitting watching Ed and all Bill is doing is swooning over Ed's abilities.
NeoN Nosferatu Tom Brady is not the greatest football player of all time are you out of your mind?? Put ANY other average quarterback in Bellichecks system and you’d get the same results. Put actually great quarterbacks in that system and the patriots don’t choke in the super bowl.

Anyone here after they both got into the hof in back to back years? As a Ravens fan, I still hate Troy for that AFC championship moment but damnit he is so deserving of being a first ballot hall of famer. Idk if we’ll ever see two safeties in a rivalry like this one between these two but it was a blessing to see everything these guys did for the game
Its simple why you can't compare them. Ed is a free safety, role play zone and man aka coverage, focus interceptions and get tackles when you can. Troy is a strong safety, role basically a faster linebacker the enforcer of the back end, focus hit anything that comes your way no one gets passed you play man on tight ends full backs and running backs. and sometimes inside recievers and get interceptions when you can and sometimes blitz. Basically free safety stops the pass from getting behind, strong safety stops the ball carrier, not always running back can be anybody, from getting behind him
+Dajore Taylor idk y people compare them but they are the greatest safeties of all time and Ik cuz I'm a ravens fan. This is jus to say they change that position for guys like kam chancellor or reggie nelson

As a Ravens fan, Polamalu drove me crazy back in the day. Nothing but respect, and it was awesome to see these two teams with these guys in the primes against each other.
Brian Dawkins, Rodney Harrison, Lawyer Milloy and Bob Sanders were all beasts around this time too. A lot of high-level safety play during this era of football. Great video
So many people completely ignore the years Ed Reed played STRONG safety!. His first four seasons he either split time or exclusively played strong safety and btw won defensive player of the year and 1st team all pro honors. What im trying to point out here is he was once a very capable run supporter and known to lay some wood at the time. After his nerve damage to his neck he was forced to play a less physical style of ball to stay in the league. simply put in ed reed's prime he is the most complete safety to ever play when considering this and his coverage abilities
Hinesward really fucked Ed Reed up LOL. Put Troy played more positions then Ed did and was asked to do more on the defense as well. Troy played LB and got down on the Line as well, he also played FS. QB were too scared to throw to his way.
I think troys unpredictability and instinct made him harder to play against. Dude was just everywhere on the defense, and showed up in playoffs and supervowls.
Ed was better in coverage but Troy could play strong safety or inside linebacker or outside linebacker most of the time they lined him up against the slot receivers as a nickel back.
Polamalu will go into the Hall of Fame in 2020...he will be the 7th first round pic by Steelers since 1969 to be inducted....Greene, Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Woodson, Faneca (to be elected in 2017)
I wouldn't be surprised to find out they're constructing the busts for both men as we comment. Both are Canton bound. I don't want to compare them. They were both great and exciting players for their respective teams. Great for the rivalry (Steelers/Ravens). Saw them both in a game and both made spectacular plays in the game. That's what they do.
Polamalu was a harder hitter, more extravagant player, and really threw himself into the fray. Taking nothing against Reed, but Polamalu was more fun to watch.
I think the spelling is in reference to Pat McAfee's pronunciation of his name every time he gets upset remembering the day Troy ruined his life. Go watch that video if you haven't. Phenomenal.
Which is a very contradictory statement considering the nature of this sport, lol how can you not allow contact and physicality in a sport that is literally based on a tug-of-war were people push themselves for each side to score? How can you guarantee the safety and health in this kind of sport? You can't, lol unless you change the sport to something else entirely. So go out there and take the risk, it's just like every other dangerous job
I can only imagine how awful it must be to play offense on the bengals/ browns all through the 2000s. Steelers and ravens twice a year, not to discount some of the cats on the bengals/ browns defenses while you’re there. Meanest division in the league for a long time
i remember when Hines ward put reed on his back then looked to the sidelines, pointed at reed and continued with the play AND THE FLAG WAS ON THE RAVENS.. Dirty play but man it's fucking funny
Yeah, but Ward was a WR, Lewis a MLB. A MLB should be able to punish and destroy a wideout. A wideout however should NOT be able to do so to a safety. But he did.
I’ve watched this highlight reel @ least a dozen times, I love it and it still CRAcKS ME UP when Herman Edwards is going “NO NO NO NOO ED REED! NO NO DON’T” and when Ed says “I’m not James Brown... I don’t want Noo JAcK-it!” 😂🤣😁🤣🤣😂🤣 Yeaaaa that’s so tuff I’m not James Brown 😂 I love it
As a Cowboys fan, Rex Ryan summed it up pretty nicely for me with Polamalu. "He plays like his hair's on fire!" and "Man, I wish he was on my team." That dude was a lot of fun to watch play football. Respect, Steelers fans are lucky, and seem to acknowledge that...
Both Phenomenal. 1a & 1b = 1 Free Saftey & 1 Strong Saftey. Both had excellent ball skills, coverage skills and would hit you like a Linebacker. Happy to have watched both for their entire career's.
Ed Reed was a great cover safety but wasn't as physical as the video made him seem. Troy Polamalu was a far more physical safety and also good in coverage (but not as dynamic as Reed) in his prime. Personally, Brian Dawkins is my favorite safety. Much respect to those two legends.
+CanvassBlack They both would have been great but they never got the chance to. Bob Sanders was always injured but he was a beast when healthy and R.I.P Sean Taylor he was gonna be special.
Derek Hays agreed.. Reed is definitely the top dog. But Dawkins definitely comes in second or 3rd. Despite Dawkins playing the FS position and troy and Reed playing the SS position most of the time
The whole defense on both teams was just monstrous for a decade plus. Part of Joe Thomas being one of the best ever is having to block cats like woodley, Harrison and Suggs four times a year
Obviously, they were blessed with athletic talent but what separated these two from everyone else were their incredible instincts. Off the charts instincts.
I loved watching this rivalry, Polamalu got the best the Ravens many times, was blessed to watch them both play. Still remember Polamalu jumping over the center to sack our QB.
Cowboys fan here. And it was always a pleasure to watch colts pats steelers and ravens those 2000 match ups were epic then and nfl history now. It was 07 I went from a cowboys fan to a FOOTBALL FAN. EVEN WATCHED gore Davis and Smith get all drafted chad Pennington sad ending in Miami just like Alex Smith back in San Fran. But amazing plays by amazing MEN. GREAT YEARS IN LAST OF HIGH SCHOOL IN 05 TO THRU MY 20S
That secondary would have been a nightmare to deal with. Since nickel is the new base I'd kick Woodson inside at slot and put Revis out on the boundary. NO FLY ZONE
Imagine if these two had played on the same team, if I ever find a genie, living that reality is one of my wishes (the team is the Steelers, to be specific).

Thats a cheat code.Troy at strong safety and Ed at Cover...nothing going past the line of scrimmage.
As a Steelers fan, Ed Reed is the most complete safety, but Troy’s game is literally unexplainable and unteachable.
They play two different positions with vastly different syles. Troy couldn't do what Reed did and Reed couldn't do what Troy did.
Facts man you can’t teach those instincts and that’s the difference between good players the elite and The gods of our great game.

Exactly!!!
Hinesward really fucked Ed Reed up LOL. Put Troy played more positions then Ed did and was asked to do more on the defense as well. Troy played LB and got down on the Line as well, he also played FS. QB were too scared to throw to his way.
lol and Lewis got him back for that hit on his last game on the field lol
Austin Blake HOF...1 vote
No, I am the most complete player to ever live. You just never heard of me because I injured my neck.
I love Troy since his USC days, couldn't care less for the Steelers, but always rooted for Troy! Great player!
Polamalu will go into the Hall of Fame in 2020...he will be the 7th first round pic by Steelers since 1969 to be inducted....Greene, Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Woodson, Faneca (to be elected in 2017)
ed reed, troy polamalu, bob sanders, rodney harrison, john lynch, sean taylor, and brian dawkins all revolutionized the safty position
idk about bob sanders.. lol
Steve Atwater ?
@@jackschwartz1756 Bob Sanders was VERY good, just got hurt so much bc he was small. He woulda been a HOF if he played a full career
Darren Sharper was a killer though
Forgot about ronnie lott,steve atwater
Man Ed Reed covered most of the field and 90% of this video
Troy is the reason why I watch football 🏈 and I could’ve been a Steelers fan but I’m a hawks fan
Troy was a monster, don't get it twisted....but Ed Reed was a different kind of real.
ignorant
@426ZZZZ Ed is the best FS, and Troy is the best SS. How about that? Imagine them on the same team. lol
@426ZZZZ 2 different positions. Just cause safety is included in their position name doesnt make em same🤷
Yep. Both the best ever at their positions
2:06 I love Ray Lewis's reaction
I wouldn't be surprised to find out they're constructing the busts for both men as we comment. Both are Canton bound. I don't want to compare them. They were both great and exciting players for their respective teams. Great for the rivalry (Steelers/Ravens). Saw them both in a game and both made spectacular plays in the game. That's what they do.
As a ravens fan, I always enjoy watching these players playing each other
Title says Ed and Troy yet 80% of the video is about EDD REED
Because he is better duh
@@travis6213 no he aint. 2 rings over 1
@Cee Z ?
SLIZZY SLATT so what if he has 1 more ring, Ed reed revolutionized the position
@@kid2174 so did polumalu😂
Polamalu was a harder hitter, more extravagant player, and really threw himself into the fray. Taking nothing against Reed, but Polamalu was more fun to watch.
Not if you like Defensive Touchdowns 😁
Brandon Benfield Troy was a better hitter ed was a better in coverage
Ima be honest reed and ray hit harder than most mfs ever
Cee Z no even Mel blunt said Ed is the best of all the safety’s
Lor Bmoreflow Ive seen others hit harder than both 🤷🏽♂️
I think Troy palamalue is underrated
who?
He spelled his name so wrong
@@miked.336 😂😂😂
@Trump-4- Prison 😂😂😂😂😂
I think the spelling is in reference to Pat McAfee's pronunciation of his name every time he gets upset remembering the day Troy ruined his life. Go watch that video if you haven't. Phenomenal.
My favorite of all time is Coach Billick: "get down, get down! Oh god dangit, Ed! Go, Ed! Go Ed! Go!"
As a Steelers fan I love Troy but I hated Reed but I respected the hell out of that man also.
Polamalu is the greatest playmaker when you need a play. And he makes the exact play that you need
“They don’t want physical football”
Best line in nfl history
Prophetic line too! Ed predicted that the nfl was moving toward touch football and he didn’t even know it at the time.
Meanest division in the league for a long time
Neither does the commisioner.
2:03 “sup boi” man we love hoe hard reed and ray used to hit man ravens d nice today but they not nearly as physical
Bill sure loves him some ed reed. Damn baltimore was so lucky to have ray lewis and ed reed at the same time
Ngata suggs a ton of awesome corners. And d line ravens to this day stack defense
@@Bmoreflow I wish they still had a defense like that
Whe ray lewis said “OH MY GOODNESS X3” I cried 😂😂😂
The dominant division of that decade! The 2 best safeties to ever grace the field. Rip Sean Taylor
It was amazing watching both of these guys play we are blessed
i remember when Hines ward put reed on his back then looked to the sidelines, pointed at reed and continued with the play AND THE FLAG WAS ON THE RAVENS.. Dirty play but man it's fucking funny
He laid him out twice in that game. One was a side blind block and the other was a straight up pancake.
no it cant because lewis was supposed to hit players LMFAO Hines was supposed to block and run routes lmaoo
Yeah, but Ward was a WR, Lewis a MLB.
A MLB should be able to punish and destroy a wideout.
A wideout however should NOT be able to do so to a safety.
But he did.
+Michel Smiffi Lol demaryius thomas destroys players from every position so what would you even call him, lol.
Hines could block really well for a WR
James brown a bad boy though hahaha
Jesse T. I ain’t gone wear no jacket
The older I get the more I appreciate Ed Reed and Ray Lewis playing together at the same time
I’ve watched this highlight reel @ least a dozen times, I love it and it still CRAcKS ME UP when Herman Edwards is going
“NO NO NO NOO ED REED! NO NO DON’T”
and when Ed says
“I’m not James Brown... I don’t want Noo JAcK-it!”
😂🤣😁🤣🤣😂🤣
Yeaaaa that’s so tuff
I’m not James Brown 😂
I love it
From THE U! Ed Reed first ballot HoF , GOAT!
Both from AFC North 😎
Ed Reed plays offense, on defence 🔥🔥🔥
Polomalu was completely above and beyond anything that people had seen at the time. He just never stopped.
"This episode will not be about Brady and Manning..." 1/4 of this was about Brady and Manning. Lmao
Lol I knew I would be hearing Eagles fans crying saying Brian Dawkins
+I Smell Fresh Cash but Dawkins is a beast and I am no Eagles fan
To say Ed reed was not that physical is the most unbelievable statement I've ever heard he smacked people look up the highlights
+Joe Detmers He is physical but not as much as troy polamalu. this video made him look more physical the kam chancellor
Amen, Dawkins is the best deciplined Safety to play the game. Ed and Troy made so much plays because they gambled and freelanced a lot.
Brian's Dawkins?
Ronnie Lott, Lawyer Milloy, John Lynch, Rodney Harrison.
easily better than Polamalu.
+CanvassBlack They both would have been great but they never got the chance to. Bob Sanders was always
injured but he was a beast when healthy and R.I.P Sean Taylor he was gonna be special.
+Frank NT not really
+Jonathan Small look at the stats
People forget about Brian Dawkins
Averagekentuckyfan Brian Dawkins is a free safety tho
He ain’t forgot about, it’s just these 2 guys stand out above everyone with how great they played
thigh42 he has better stats then both of them.
Hawkeye gamerguy he didn't doe Ed Reed has the bests stats. And Dawkins played longer then Troy that's why his is better
Derek Hays agreed.. Reed is definitely the top dog. But Dawkins definitely comes in second or 3rd. Despite Dawkins playing the FS position and troy and Reed playing the SS position most of the time
Great players studying the minds of great players! Classic
try facing these two 4 times a year being in the same division, then having to face one of them again in the playoffs. a freakin nightmare
The whole defense on both teams was just monstrous for a decade plus. Part of Joe Thomas being one of the best ever is having to block cats like woodley, Harrison and Suggs four times a year
Meanwhile, I'm over here like,
"Yeah, Brian Dawkins!"
Yeah Brian is missing from this video which is a crime. Legit I am pressing charges on everyone named in the credits.
For me it's "Hey! What about Ronnie Lott!" All props to E.D. Reed and Troy "C-Gap" Palamalu, but Dawkins and Lott were the best in their day.
Reed, Lott, Dawk, Troy IMO
He was probably the best all around safety in his prime
@@billt8504 bro I have all four of the safeties you named on my madden 20 ultimate team.. they r beasts when I play online
"I ain't James Brown, I 'ont want no jacket!"
Polumalu is the GOAT
Polamalu*
Who has more interceptions and tds
Austin Madore why do people always gotta compare just let him live in his own legacy
Pat McAfee’s story brought me here. Palamaloo and E-D REED BOI!
FS: ed reed SS: troy
CB: cwood CB: champ bailey
That secondary would have been a nightmare to deal with. Since nickel is the new base I'd kick Woodson inside at slot and put Revis out on the boundary. NO FLY ZONE
omackTV
CB Deion Sanders. CB Darelle Revis
God Squad
Lol i still have madden 06 this is very possible
If only sean Taylor was still here
Do swearingers favorite player is Sean Taylor so that's why I like him
Imagine if these two had played on the same team, if I ever find a genie, living that reality is one of my wishes (the team is the Steelers, to be specific).
I’ve watched this @ least 50x over the years.
Both were SO DOPE.
Sean Taylor
oh man if he could have played longer :(
Sean Taylor and Brian Dawkins is the NFC version of Troy and ed
Never thought of that lol
So true!
thank u and Karl Joseph is the next best
