- Flashback 2 reviewed by Tristan Ogilvie on PlayStation 5. Also available on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
"While the original Flashback is an Amiga classic, Flashback 2 can only be described as a meagre sequel. Rehashed story elements, dull and clunky combat, a shockingly modest presentation, peculiar design decisions, and wholly unacceptable technical deficiencies (the bulk of which persist even after two post-release patches) make for an adventure that left me underwhelmed at best and utterly infuriated at worst. While I’ll always feel nostalgic for Conrad Hart’s original adventure, Flashback 2 is unfortunately not the blast from the past I had hoped for - instead, it’s a total misfire."
This is easily the funniest review I've ever seen. That boss being stuck at the top of the stairs, coupled with those clips from 1987 Robocop, literally brought tears outta me!!! 🤣🤣
The portraits ARE made with AI. The tell tale signs are all there, trust me.
This guy deserves a award for Playing this game
Yeah. Must have been a painful one.
I’d have been happy to drop it and still give it a 2.
Fair play for at least trying the patches, but man this is a piss take of a classic.
"You can use your gun Conrad, there's no jammer here."
Gun jams.
Comedy gold.
Fade to Black will always be my Flashback 2.
Fade to Black is literally the sequel to Flashback- What the hell is this game and where did it come from?
This one happens during Flashback 1 and before Fade to Black.
@@nickblomgren This one is a prequel to Fade to Black.
We get the Fade To Black sequel at 2:52
Flashback 1 and Flashback 2 happen at pretty much the same exact time.. kind of. Flashback 2 SLIGHTLY takes place after Flahback 1, despite both games happening at the same time for the most part, which makes Flashback 2 the actual second game in the series. Fade to Black is actually Flashback 3. The order of the series is now: Flashback, Flashback 2 and Fade to Black (which is now the 3rd game in the timeline, despite being the 2nd released game).
Back then, the first time you saw the original Flashback in movement,
you simply were forced into a mouth agape staring expression.
The protagonist's animation by itself could sell the game easily!
(Plus the evocative and very inspired cut-scenes as a major bonus...)
Yet everything else was just top notch side scrolling gaming for the era,
with a satisfying game-play that was mostly set for methodical, tense, and strategic traversing/fighting scenarios.
It's such a bummer when beloved milestones and cult classics get treated so poorly with this kind of half baked sequels,
with close to no effective use of modern software and hardware, and no visible emphasis on what made the original game special.

Well said man!

Remember Flashback remake from 2013, made by Ubisoft?
Anyone feel that one is unnecessary?
They gave it a 2. Yikes.
Stop
😱
Why the hell are you spoiling? Let us all watch it by ourselves and know what they gave it. Stop being a lifeless. :)
That's too generous
This made me want to watch this whole vid lol
Gollum, Redfall, Skull Island: Rise of Kong, MW3, Walking Dead: Destinies, Starfield, Flashback 2 .. man, what a year of awful games 🤣
Plot twist, it's really a puzzle game and getting through the bugs is the real objective.
So the 16 bit game in the 90s had full cut scenes but the 3D current gen has talking photos? Somebody dropped the ball hard.
Not sure where the budget went
He’s not lying 👎
Look at this guy, he's just standing there while im shooting.
And now Im dying for no apparent reason.
And now I've fallen through a couch.
LOL
They clearly put a lot of work into the environments and certain design elements, it’s a shame the rest brought the whole thing down. Rough. Needed another year and some QA testers. And a different voice actor for the lead 😅
My exact thoughts, the backgrounds look really nice at times. Suppose that could be the only positive.
Or they just use AI to design for themselves
Loved FB as a kid, was excited to see this video and the possibility of a cool pt 2… what an epic fail. Please never ruin Another World / Out of this World like this
heart of the alien (sequel to another world) was alittle glitchy but still amazing imo
Why in the world do they still make games where you can't FREELY adjust the controls to your liking? I've never liked this Control Scheme A or B-only crap and it's even worse when on PC, where it should be mandatory to REMAP them freely on the keyboard & mouse. This seems to be a nasty trademark from Microids, which I've encountered on the latest TinTin adventure game, 2018 Flashback remaster, and this Flashback 2. Any game that doesn't give that freedom to adjust controls is an automatic pass and a ZERO/10. Even Emulators for old NES, SNES or Sega games give you freedom to adjust the controls in any way you want.
Flashback "2" literally
The game's existence is worth it, just for the sake of this review. Funny as hell.
Being an older gamer and remember the first one coming out and loving the atmosphere, this hurts
Same :/
@@pmarreck ✊😢
Definitely. 13 year old me would be incredibly disappointed to see this. Because current me definitely is. What a bummer.
@@UpsetN3RD feel ya man, blows ✊
Yup
another alpha release untested.
The original was my favourite Sega game this is an insult to the original.
The fact that they gave him a hoodie makes me wonder if it was made by a bunch of pot head slackers.
He is not even a real Conrad and it is explained in the game.
Funniest review I've seen for ages
This was a refreshing review to see. All too often nowadays, reviewers seem hesitant to say how they really feel about awful games because they're afraid of being blacklisted for advanced review copies in the future. But this review doesn't pull any punches. WTG IGN.
This isn't exactly the latest entry in one of those soulless AAA franchises.
Tristian's reviews are the best! Triple his wage and have him do all the video reviews.
Such a shame the first game was ground breaking
But this is a total disaster
LOL This is the kind of game that you get when you laid off your entire quality assurance team.
A damn shame our youthful memories have been ruined by this. Kudos to the reviewer for persevering through it so we don't have to!!!
Yeah! Ioved the old school Flashback, this one here.....meh.
Why would a buggy sequel to one of your beloved games, ruin your memories of it some twenty years later?
The "there's no jammer here" followed by multiple clicks really summarized the experience.
Oh damn, this game was on my wishlist too. That's disappointing to hear
Definitely must avoid.
This is just saaaad. Another World and Flashback were amazing games...
The original was probably one of my most favourite games of all time on the Megadrive. The soundtrack as well.
What a shame 😢
and there goes Skull Island's chance of being voted the worst 2023 game
We pretending like Flashback didnt already have a sequel in Fade to Black?
Positive things this review has accomplished: 1) let me know that this game is garbage and not worth my time and money 2) reminded me of Shadow Complex, which I've since learned has a remastered version on Steam for $15, so now I'm going to buy that for my Steam Deck.
Wasnt Fade to Black Flashback 2?
it's a pre-sequel
Already from the first teasers it was obvious that it was going to be total crap, made from ready-made assets, neural networks generated graphic, designed by an incompetent, cheapest team. Why the surprise? BTW: funny review.
The game title Flashback 2 gave you the answer to what the score will IGN give for this game lol.
Damm this is the first time im siding with IGN
When it was announced from Microids, we knew this would be the outcome. They make Gameloft look like Capcom.
Amazing. Progress stalling bugs like this mean there was like no real play testing done at all. How do you fail so hard at something so simple? Throw the game at someone and tell them to play through it to make sure it's at least possible to do so. Geez.
Another very bad Unity game. Runs terribly on the steam deck and is an insult to the original game. How this got passed concept is beyond me.
Had this on my Steam wishlist for a while. Will promptly be removing it right now. Also, any game devs from Blizzard reading this and want to make a modern Blackthorne, DON'T!
Why do developers even bother releasing games where serious bugs are evident in the first moments of playing? There's no way they didn't see those problems themselves they just decided let's get our money now and deal with the problems later. Disgraceful!
Damn. Such potential. Such letdown
If only ign would always give ratings so boldly. Assassin's Creed Mirage - 8; EA Sports FC -7; Cricket 24 - 5; NBA 2K24 - 6; Madden NFL 24 - 6; Immortals of Aveum - 8; Forspoken - 6; Overwatch 2 - 8; Starfield -7.
To be fair those scores seem fair. Giving something 2/10 for forspoken is a huge leap. It’s not great but bad dialouge and story doesn’t instant to 2. You can still traverse the world nice and the powers can be fun people judge too much on peak or trash. Nuance.
Oh boy, how bad has a game to be, to get a 1 or even a 0? This game is completly broken.
How are games like this still be made and released?
Look how they massacred my boy 😞 Damn...was waiting for this. Flashback was one of the best Genesis games...
This is so sad
They should have kept the aesthetic from the first one.
So basically a recent game that reflects and reminds us the state of the game industry🙄
the boss fight was hillarious hahahha
This is even more ironic if one considers that there was already a Flashback 2 published almost thirty years ago.
If you bought a refrigerator, house or car in this condition, consumer protections would guarantee your money back and probably end up doing in the company that tried to pass the garbage off. It's criminal that software products can get away with ripping off consumers like this.
It should of been a side scrolling genre game like the first flash back. Why's it so difficult to make a AAA side scrolling game mortal combat and Tekken are the only games that are AAA standard side scrolling. Where's the AAA street of rage and shinobi. Nintendo switch have made some with smash bother, metriod dreed and Mario wonder and sega's new sonic. Top down genre and side scrolling genre don't get many AAA games the best 2 are diablo 4 and mortal combat 1.
Awesome Flashback 2 Review Video.
Love this reviewer not matter the game’s quality
Doubly nostalgic as it reminds me of flicking through Amiga Power looking for a worst reviewed games and enjoying the reviewer unload. More of these!
2/10! Whoa, that's brutal.
To bad because there are not many games like this.
Dafuq did they do?
Honestly looks like theyve captured the original perfectly.....with the terrible controls lol
This is worse than Gollum.
The next game of the century, everyone! Let's hear it for this banger! 👏👏👏
This guy is a trooper for trying to play this to completion
Feel sorry for that boss tbh
This review is mostly a list of numerous game-breaking bugs - what an unbelievable dumpster fire this game is!!! Did they never playtest it???
WGOTY
Actually looks like it has potential, but my gosh it's rough.
What do you have to do to get a 1?
2023 is almost done and looks like games are competing to get worst game of the year
Flashback 2/10
No robots no life is a better game.
These developers and publishers should be ashamed of themselves!! Us gamers need to start a movement where we refuse to put up w this anymore and then maybe things will change! SMH!!
I'm shocked he even pulled thru to finish the game
gosh this was my fav game growing up realising they messed this up makes me really upset hopefully the fix this
This this is what a bad game actually looks like. Looking at you all the omgosh my AAA game is repetitive so 1/10 people. No assassins creed and even concord are not 1/10. More is last of us 2 etc.
Welp, just another game removed from my steam wishlist. Happens way too often in 2023.
Haha. Flashback 2. Y u so bad
wonder if reviewer actually aware if there's already a sequel back on PC/Dreamcast/PS1 called Fade 2 Black, & whether that & this new iteration would be confirmed as canon or not... :?
This one is really a sequel and happens before Fade to Black.
Thx. Just recently found out as well that FB2 is actually prequel to the first game.
@@boarMcberry No, it is not a prequel to FB1.
Currently replaying the original FB and well definitely wasn’t expecting anything ground breaking this 100% filled that 98% chance of a bad game with 20l%
A pity. OG Flashback was great. However, it's based on "Running Man", the Arnie movie and Stephen King book, not Total Recall.
I'm gutted, loved the 1st one and enjoyed fade to black, didn't know there was a Flashback 2, ordered it on Amazon without reading anything about it.... not even gonna turn it on
Jesus. Just make a hd remaster of the original. Like what they did with Another World.
Certainly LOOKS visually great. Too bad it is crap. :(
Gollum, Skull Island, Flashback 2 and CODMWIII. It's like the industry has to balance out against Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, Baldurs Gate 3 and Mario Wonder.
It’s difficult to understand how people freak out on pixel graphic if you have not been living in the moment. However, this game here does not even remember me on the original. Sad.
Pixel graphics never age, they’re actually still beautiful!
The original art direction looks beautiful! The new one too, but it must’ve been a triple terrible TTT game for such a low score.
Apparently they used AI for character portraits, and other things throughout the game 🤦 just no..
Wow! Someone worked hard to get this one done!
2 sounds and looks generous! What would make it a 1?!
the disc not making an aesthetically pleasing drinks coaster?.
the original game from 90s really had great ultra futuristic art direction - so much potential. this time it completely fails to produce the exquisite alien feel of the original
This looks more like James Bond Jr than Flashback.
Shame graphically looks decent old school vibes maybe some patches ect be a while get on ps+ 😂
AIface....
One of my favourite games. But after watch 5 secs not even going to buy it.
What an awful looking mess.
The Cyberpunk of 2D games?
Lol just one helluva shy boss, refusing to fight....not a bug 😂
What happens when the developer budget goes up the developers’ noses rather than the game.
after all that a 2/10, was expecting 0/10, it sounded like torture
The moral of the story is to never buy a game published by Microids. Ever.
Except Syberia 1 & 2
Better is Time Commando.
