  • I went and got my hands on the Flashback Switch Collector's edition. I paid £34.99 for it. I hoped and indeed, expected it to be good. But as we all know with collector's editions, expectations are rarely met. But still, it's Flashback on Nintendo Switch. It's the 25th anniversary collector's edition and I'm going to play it like it's 1993. Join me for the Flashback Game of 2018.

      I owned the original Genesis version back in the day. Honestly, I prefer the modern mode shown here. Also it's a shame that they didn't add an option for the Sega CD/3DO cutscenes.

      From what i could see it "modern" filters do a decent job of emulating the look of an old gaming setup

    Oh my, this absolutely blew my mind when I played it on an emulator a while ago, and I CANNOT believe I missed out on it on the SNES. It's INCREDIBLY dark, moody and dense. Rich detail, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE those rotoscoping animations. It makes the entire thing come alive, without any weird gimmicks.

    Flashback blew my mind as a kid...those months i spent battling through the story are so memorable...the graphics were insane and the challenge was tough...i felt like a king when i finally completed it. I spent sooooo many hours in the weird purple levels throwing my teleporter about...going up and down lifts and not knowing what the fuck to do most of the time..!!

  • @Snotnarok

    Confused why they'd include a SNES cart thing in there since ...the SNES was the worst version by a country mile. Between the censorship, constant slowdown/poor performance, missing sounds and music ....it's the worst version to play or reference.
    Trying to call this a remaster is a sham, slapping filters on it and calling it a day doesn't solve anything. Another World got properly sorted with better visuals through actual touch-ups and it looks great. This ...feels like they took the ol' ROM, threw new audio onto it, some filters and threw it out the door.
    Why, why is Flashback one of the best step-platformers ever made and yet it gets the WORST treatment by pubs/devs? The remake was crap, the remaster isn't looking great.
    I love the game, the port isn't looking to be anything less than a massive disappointment.

    • @hingeslevers
      @hingeslevers 6 лет назад +1

      Snotnarok yeah, you cant do the thing they did with another world with this, because this was pixel based, not vector.

    • @Snotnarok
      @Snotnarok 6 лет назад +2

      They could have touched up the visuals regardless, not all of Another World was vector. They managed to make it widescreen and increased the background detail. I'm not just referring to the sprites. I like pixel art, a lot. I'm not asking them to alter that but they could have easily touched it up past the limitations of the hardware from the time.
      They called this a remastered title and have done nothing to it but add filters you can find on any emulator.
      I'm not asking them to remake the game, because that was already a disaster but this game didn't get touched up much- at all. They need to give a reason for you to fork over $40+ and there's not anything here to encourage that.
      The Genesis/MD version looks as good and if the lag he mentioned is accurate? Then this really isn't worth buying at all.

    • @iced_coffeelvr1069
      @iced_coffeelvr1069 6 лет назад +3

      Well, this is the Switch version. I doubt Nintendo wanted another rival's "cartridge" in there.

    • @Snotnarok
      @Snotnarok 6 лет назад +3

      Sonic Mania's Collector's Edition comes with Sonic both standing on a Sega Genesis console that blurts out "SEGA" when you hit the power switch; as a large statue, it comes with a Sega Genesis cartridge that you open to reveal a ring.
      So, yeah. I don't think that's accurate. Nor would it help this mess of a port at the end of the day.

    • @robintst
      @robintst 6 лет назад

      Honestly, I think re-releases of certain games like this can be pretty pointless. They lose that mystique they once had as software that pushed hardware limits or accomplished graphical or programming feats previously thought impossible on the platforms of the time. At the end of the day, the game we love is still in there but the original feeling of the experience can never be duplicated so slapping on visual filters and other nonsense is really all they can do.

  • @mrsadrobot

    This was such a great game on the Amiga and Megadrive. Maddening but addictive. But this? It doesn't seem necessary nor like it's going to sell well. Who's the target audience supposed to be?
    I'm glad I've seen your review...
    I guess I'll stick to retropie. I'm even close to selling my amiga 600 and consoles now as I have no space / too many kids, depending on how you look at it.
    I checked and you can't sell kids on ebay.

      Lassi Kinnunen are there really 10,000 switch owners who also are fans of retro games who also remember this era and maybe also played this exact game and are nostalgic for it and dont already have a way to play it? Because that's really really niche. I sort of hope that the game succeeds, despite its flaws, because of what it represents, I just want there to be enough of an audience to want games like this, you know?

    By the way, Another World (and probably this game too) has incredibly sophisticated game engine not similar to any traditional programming approach for 2D platformers. It allowed the huge amount of animation to be packed in such a small size binary. It's kinda vector graphics combined with bitmap backgrounds. Google it, it's very interesting stuff.

    • @EngineerOfChaos
      @EngineerOfChaos 6 лет назад +1

      Honestly, with the Nintendo Switch, it's really the portability that makes it worth it over most other platforms. I know it isn't a VERY portable console but I can't easily whip out a PS4 or the like on the train.

    • @KnuxKitsune
      @KnuxKitsune 6 лет назад

      Since you mentioned portability, I'll point out that I played this game frequently on the Sega Nomad, a portable Genesis/Mega Drive system. I still very much prefer the Genesis/Mega Drive port, but the Mega CD version is enhanced with CD music, voiced dialog (which was also in the Amiga and PC versions) and pre-rendered video over the vector animated cutscenes

    I remember playing this on a store kiosk years ago at Electronics Boutique (later known as GameStop here in the states). FB was not an easy game, the platforming, level design, audio and graphics were amazing back then. It is fun to it return, bummer it has issues. Oddly enough I never owned a copy of the game. So I never played it straight thru. Sadly I do not own a Switch, but also heard that this CE was Europe only. Sigh, remake I heard was rubbish. Just cannot win sometimes.

    • @kadosho02
      @kadosho02 6 лет назад

  • @stefhendricks
    @stefhendricks 6 лет назад +1

    I got it at release as well, 33 euro well spent. Finished it on normal the same day. Good old times. Could not notice the lag you are talking about, it felt exactly like the PC version or SMD version, let's say the game always had typical controls, where you e.g. need to push UP a little bit earlier than the end of the ledge while running for Konrad to make the big jump. I am happy with this edition. Did not realize that the booklet does not fit the metal case. That is just typical... French? C'est la vie. :)

    For something physical as a value i believe its good they give it on greece for 40 euros,compare it with other games such as the SF 30th anniversary which they have it on switch for 50 rather 40 like ps4 release.Seriously 50 because it is for the switch version some times i wonder for how stupid they think we are! Anyway i liked allot the packaging & all and the metal snes case,too bad that the manual & such doesn't fit.But i was wondering though for which version it was as well.Because friends of mine said that the pc-amiga version was superior from the 16 bit systems & such.As i heard on the video it is the snes version and its pretty stupid that they didn't include also the pc original as well.Since you nintendo dolts actually worked on a anniversary collection you had the luxury i guess to also include all versions! But i guess its easier waiting for those millions from the 40 dollars you collected from all around the globe.

    They really should have remastered this properly. Redone sprites to take advantage of the extra resolution. Redone backgrounds. It wouldn't have taken much of a team to pull it off. What we have here is just a cash grab.
    If I wanted this in a mobile form I'd just run an emulator on an android tablet and call it done. The benefit of the Switch is that its controllers are so low latency. It's a shame you can't hack it to run what you want as every tablet on android no matter what controller you use (even dedicated hardware ones that connect phyisically to the device) they have too much lag for twitchy games. Its why I've never really bothered to try and make a decent portable gaming system with android.
    Not sure if Apple has that same problem with ipad/controllers. They seemed to solve the latency issues with audio which is why pretty much all the best audio software runs on ipad and hardly anyone is available for android.

Seriously, especially for the price, the Switch is GARBAGE! I bought mine about 8 months after its Australian release & there were probably less than 10 games total for it! That combined with what this video shows that you CANT EVEN USE IT IN PUBLIC like it was specifically Marketed & Made for & the fact it ran sooo damn hot! I have to say that it is really depressing that Delphine Software International never had another hit once this game shipped, they made that living abortion called Shaw Fu and then made some motorcycle racing games until they died off. What a lame way to go out. Paul Cuisset who came up with Flashback then made that awful game called Amy in 2012..these lads are cursed or something.

    A game developed for Sega Mega Drive, first released on Amiga in 1992, by a French studio gets a 25th Anniversary release in 2018 on Switch based on the Super Nintendo version with the European box art and title but with a North American SNES cartridge. I'll skip this one. Loved Flashback on Amiga and Mega Drive.

    I thought about getting this, but after watching your review I do not see benefit to getting it now. I have it on SNES and Genesis. Honestly, I kind of wish it was Delphine classic package with AW and AW2 along with Flashback. For $35 just seems to expensive for a port with a few filter options; audio update, and reverse.

    2142 AD and Agent Conrad is still dressing like an early 90's TV cop with brown leather bomber jacket, baggy jeans and white trainers. Kids today are dressing in a mish-mash of the worst 80's and early 90's clothing, so I guess it's no surprise that by the mid 22nd Century things are likely to be any different.

    Poor and pointless packaging.
    A rewind function, a testament to the ability of modern video game players.
    From the looks of it annoying controls.
    Annoying filters.
    The problem with the save modes is also irritating.
    NO, this isn't worth it, I will stick to the Sega C.D. Version.
    Thanks for the review. I'll save my cash. Have a good day.

    Appears to be a kind of "Fast Cash-In" type of "Anniversary Edition"... The good parts are the ability to turn those filters off and the rewind ability (and well, maybe those new musics). I have to wonder, when they did opt to make tin case and instruction manual, how did they fail them so miserably? Oh well...

    I never played the original, so somethings everyone seems to be ok with (even enjoy them) are completely shocking to me. Especially, the controls. They are broken. I would have really appreciated if they would have taken the time to fix those garbage controls. They are untolerable. I bought the game in a sale and I think I paid like 50 or 60 cents, but I completely regret my purchase.

    The comic and the whole Galaxis Bureau of Investigation stuff should be stricken from the canon. Paul Cuisset quotes Conrad was inspired by Marty McFly? This collectors edition while nice in concept was not greatly executed. The game is now for sale on Android for a fraction of this price as well.

    Brilliant game. But as usual, Nintendo Switch version is way overpriced. This should be a £10 download at most. Yet people are still willing to put up with being ripped off just because it's on a certain platform.

    09:45 - 10:25 ""It's all to easy to press one of the buttons that unsheeves your weapon, this then reverses the action"" ""Responsiveness isn't up to the original games standards."" Why re-release a classic game but mess about with the gameplay and controls when there's nothing wrong with the gameplay in the first place? SEGA have been doing this shit to Sonic games for years and look where that got them.

  • @InvokeSoul

    Really its not a Amiga Game, the base develop platform its Megadrive, but its show in the market later because Sega dont want to the deliver Delphine software a bigger cartridge to fit the whole game.
    You have an interview with Paul Cussiet in RetroGamer talking about that issue with Sega and the development of the game. If they want ot be accurate with the 25th anniversary ed they had to make a MegaDrive Cartridge better than the USA Snes one.

    I had Flashback on the PC and I never finished it. It's one of those games that I need to play again and beat it. I liked it so much I haven't even cheated and watched a play through to see the ending or anything. Also, I remember getting this game on my brand new PC and wondering why there was no sound (I needed a sound card). Fucking old PC's! And that thing wasn't cheap for the time!

    I find it odd how they didn't try to up the resolution like the anniversary version of Another World... Then again nearly every remaster that's done nowadays are just games running on an emulator with a couple texture, and filter mods.
    I guess it's to be expected for devs nowadays to not have passion when creating remasters.

    They said that they went for the SNES version when making this port. It's hard to imagine that since they controls are reversed from the SNES version. It really sucks that you can't rebind them the way you want. I asked Microids to do that when it came out, but they haven't done it yet.

    I appreciate your pointing out that the tin was based on the NA SNES cartridge because it, well, really didn't look much at all like one. Was there a special edition that color, and with that label? I see the vague resemblance to an SNES cart with the ridges on the sides and the layout of the label and the two areas below the label, but still, I would have had no idea if you hadn't mentioned it.
