I was a BMW Mechanic for 7 years before I studied engineering. I believe the piston rings were stuck in their grooves from rust, varnish and carbon. A combination of oil, heat, vibration and combustion pressure from running allowed them to free-up and engage the cylinder walls again. I have actually disassembled a 1971 3.0 CS with this problem. The repair was performed in-car. We dropped the oil pan and removed the head, removed and cleaned the pistons, replaced the rings, gently honed the cylinders and replaced the bearings. The car ran just as well as your 323i, and was a joy to drive. I have seen this before on engines that have sat for decades, but the end result is usually not this good. I am impressed!
Hi Sreten, i had to laugh out loud when you pulled the Lucas part from the alternator! As a restorer of classic British motorcycles, i know 1 thing after more than 30 years experience: Joseph Lucas is 'the Prince of Darkness' LOL
I have worked on many K jettronic Systems before. The cold start circuit can be a bit unreliable, I used to simply piggyback a wire off the trigger wire for the starter, and every time it cranks, you get cold start injection. Simple solution, reliable solution.
You are the Steven Spielberg of car repair videos! Immensely enjoyable experience. What is the psychological effect that makes these "back from the dead" repair jobs so satisfying to watch?
You are a COMPLETE LEGEND my friend. You can raise nearly dead cars back to life again and your video's are always so informative and your attention to detail is truely amazing. Well done and keep up the great work.

You must be in the clouds when seeing all of the encouraging comments here, good job man! I adore your "everything could and should be fixed" attitude!
Did anyone else find the car running that smooth kinda emotional? One of my favourite videos On another note, local stores are way more expensive because their business is having a lot of things ready for you, they charge with every sale the price of having stock of the rest while daparto's business is sending as fast as possible, not instant, and selling a big volume of parts that they can deliver with a few mails. The business scheme is very different
This is my favourite video yet, your videos are becoming more fun to watch. I love the repeating jokes that make me smile every time. Carbon fibre towels, ‘Cheers’ when you pour a beverage into the engine etc etc! Thank you!
Great work Sreten!! That engine is unkillable! ✌️ And today I solved an issue on my '02 E39 525d Touring, I had the PCV valve/filter clogged (common "issue" on the M57 platform, the filter needs to be replaced at every service) and because of that I had a ton of blow-by from the oil cap, an external oil leak from the turbo, tons of smoke from the exhaust on "pedal to the metal" mode (🤣) and a lack of performance on low revs. Replaced that stupid contraption with a new filter/housing and now it's all good and it's like a completely different car 🥳 so happy 😁

I had a North American 320i! That sticky starter problem is probably the ignition switch. The connection between the lock cylinder and switch is a little plastic thingy that rounds out. Solution is a new ignition switch. You can keep the lock cylinder.
dude, great job fighting with that k-jet system! I was rooting for you from the moment I saw you got the car. Not that many mechanics even want to tackle k-jet issues and even fewer people know how to adjust k-jet properly. I loved watching you fixing that!

impressive episode! what a ressurection! The idle mixture could be ressolved with a wideband O2 sensor, but before I would do a check for per-channel fuel supply are the same for each cylinder. The cold start injector is also clogged as it seems.
I can totally relate to the swearing when things don't go as planned, you drop a tool or hurting yourself when slipping off etc. and also the feeling of happiness when things fall into place and start to work. When I work on my car I sometimes turn the air blue but after a few f..ks shouted things work, so it has to be that way. Great work, keep it up. It's so enjoyable.

Very true, sounds much smoother than E30 with L-Jet.

The 3 positions of any Lucas system… 1. Dim 2. Flicker and 3. Off 😂
@@d_c_ocho8517 I still regret not buying a t shirt with that printed on it - at Sturgis in 1990.....
A couple more minutes and you got yourself a feature film, always with a happy ending. You, sir, are a beast of a mechanic and entertainer. 👍
instant like at the start of the video.
did not regret that at the end of the video.
I think I have never seen such a purely positive and happy comment section anywhere on the internet before :D
Agreed :))
I like that you clean everything before working, assembling or mounting back.
I audibly gasped when the engine started and kept running. Great job Professor Sreten, great job.
This channel genuinely puts a smile on my face, seeing these cars come to life again, there's not much like it. Keep up the amazing work!
Something VERY rewarding about getting old cars running again. Well done! Great to watch and follow 😎
One of the best episodes! I was jumping for joy when that engine started up!
I have worked on many K jettronic Systems before. The cold start circuit can be a bit unreliable, I used to simply piggyback a wire off the trigger wire for the starter, and every time it cranks, you get cold start injection. Simple solution, reliable solution.
I watched the hour-long video in one breath. Fascinating story, so keep going man. I can't wait for the continuation of this story
You are the Steven Spielberg of car repair videos! Immensely enjoyable experience. What is the psychological effect that makes these "back from the dead" repair jobs so satisfying to watch?
Sreten Spielberg 😄
You are a COMPLETE LEGEND my friend. You can raise nearly dead cars back to life again and your video's are always so informative and your attention to detail is truely amazing. Well done and keep up the great work.
This channel deserves atleast 1 million subscribers
Absolutely excited to see the continuation of this E21 323i revival, what a jewel she is! and I bet that she will become one of the undisputed all-time favourites of your BMW collection...
You must be in the clouds when seeing all of the encouraging comments here, good job man! I adore your "everything could and should be fixed" attitude!
Did anyone else find the car running that smooth kinda emotional? One of my favourite videos
On another note, local stores are way more expensive because their business is having a lot of things ready for you, they charge with every sale the price of having stock of the rest while daparto's business is sending as fast as possible, not instant, and selling a big volume of parts that they can deliver with a few mails. The business scheme is very different
This is my favourite video yet, your videos are becoming more fun to watch. I love the repeating jokes that make me smile every time. Carbon fibre towels, ‘Cheers’ when you pour a beverage into the engine etc etc! Thank you!
I can't wait to see this finished
SO much joy from this video! Nothing like rooting for an abandoned car to come back to life!
Great work Sreten!! That engine is unkillable! ✌️
And today I solved an issue on my '02 E39 525d Touring, I had the PCV valve/filter clogged (common "issue" on the M57 platform, the filter needs to be replaced at every service) and because of that I had a ton of blow-by from the oil cap, an external oil leak from the turbo, tons of smoke from the exhaust on "pedal to the metal" mode (🤣) and a lack of performance on low revs.
Replaced that stupid contraption with a new filter/housing and now it's all good and it's like a completely different car 🥳 so happy 😁
genuine content, simple, direct. You are healing many minds. Our lives are filled with non sense crap and these 57 minutes just made sense. We all need to do what you are doing, identify our passion and simply pursue it. Streten this is more than cars
I so enjoy these videos! I used to work on cars for a living and miss it a bit. But watching Sreten do his magic brings a smile to my face always. Next time I'm home in Germany I will visit some how.
@M539 Restorations. Really enjoy the restoration of this car. When are we going to see more videos on this?
My man, even restoring JetTronic fuel systems. What a hero!
18:08 ...actually gave me goosebumps! Soooo satisfying.... :) Great job!
I want to see the complete cleaning part of the car. That's gonna be soooo satisfying.
I can’t wait to see you do a interior cleaning on this gem. Cheers from Grafenwoehr Germany!
I believe I was About 16 when my neighbour bought his 1st brand new car at age of 60 in this color I believe it was called reseda green he was a city bus driver and only used it in weekends and boy oh boy me and my Brothers where a bit envious. I am now 60 and I also watch every video you make with much pleasure and graditute love yr channel man keep it up
👍
I'm a(GM) parts in charge, and I understand what does it feel like to serve a furious waiting customer, specially if it's discontinue parts, but the truth you don well mechanically in a very professional way, all the best for all future projects and thank you for letting us to be a part of it.
That was really impressive. Great work Sreten. The car sounds sweet.
This episode just made me happy, its as if the car was waiting for the right person to save it, and it looks like you passed its backgound checks. Now I cant wait for the rest of the restoration journey. Awesome!
Excellent result and well done unsticking the metering plunger! It’s coming together really well and no-one should underestimate your abilities having successfully rebuilt the metering head - many have tried and failed (especially when it comes to ensuring they don’t leak when you’ve finished).
A really good watch and thanks for sharing your work.
I had a North American 320i! That sticky starter problem is probably the ignition switch. The connection between the lock cylinder and switch is a little plastic thingy that rounds out. Solution is a new ignition switch. You can keep the lock cylinder.
Thank you
YOU ARE INCREDIBLE MAN! SO ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE ON THE ENTIRE RUclips! THE DAY YOU POST IS A PERFECT DAY! THANK YOU!
dude, great job fighting with that k-jet system! I was rooting for you from the moment I saw you got the car. Not that many mechanics even want to tackle k-jet issues and even fewer people know how to adjust k-jet properly. I loved watching you fixing that!
You brought this beautiful piece of engineering back to life. Can't wait to see this project completed.
This video made me smile for most of the hour of watching it. Two pee brakes later the video is done and my cheek muscles hurt a bit from all the smiles. That was good stuff. The wrenching and making things work again satisfying, very satisfying. Thank you for the good time!
I have an E21. Seen probably every E21 video available on youtube. This is the best video - hands down. Super informative, and a humble tenacious mechanic with a great personality. Please don't stop. Regards from Los Angeles.
Hi Stretton, when can we expect work to start on this project, or at least an update? Really very keen to see this one get started!
you really pulled out a classic and made it run with those brakes and exhaust well done you brought out the boy in me lol
thx u lol when is the next part .
Incredibly engaging and what a journey it has been so far with this car. Great job on getting it running! 👏
Lazarus is back from the grave! You sir, are a great mechanic, that doesn't want to give up even on rust buckets that others would have sent to the grinder since a long time ago. Great video, as always. And I'm looking forward seeing what comes from Chicago. Cheers!
Favorite part of my day getting to watch new episodes. Great work Sreten!
You’re one of the few that still rebuilds component parts. Bravo!
"After 26 years of sitting idle, it's finally idling." Bravo, Sreten. A pleasure to see you battle through to get this one running again!
Pure Joy to watch even for a certified Saab Nut!
impressive episode! what a ressurection!
The idle mixture could be ressolved with a wideband O2 sensor, but before I would do a check for per-channel fuel supply are the same for each cylinder.
The cold start injector is also clogged as it seems.
Hey Streten, where's the next part? I need to see the progress. I love it!
Really loved how you made this video Sreten, gotta say you have the patience of Job concerning all the headaches you’ve had so far with this one.
Well done !
Fantastic! Really great work there. So amazing that the engine is in such great shape. I wonder if the 7th injector is clogged? After the state of the fuel system, I think it probably is. Amazing work though, and so little rust, this is a great project and I hope this car is looking just as good in antoher 40 years!
Indeed it is, just confirmed it today. Got a new one coming.
@@M539Restorations You think old one.
Good point Robin about the 7th injector, I was thinking the same!
@@M539Restorations So Rare to find so Rust Free...Envy! BMWCCA member 42 yrs. They need to Follow you! Blood , Sweat + Tears and now you have Spinning Wheels. Grand Slam Streten!
Man, when you finally managed to make the engine start, that sound was so good. Those engines were properly made. I let a 40 thousand km car like that pass a few years ago, and I will always regret it.
Just came back from the bond movie and this new video alert popped up I was so happy. 57 mins of sheer joy watching this - great work keep em coming you’re spoiling the armchair mechanics just how we like it 👍
Just finished watching. Going to order some merch now. Because halfway in to the video I started feeling guilty that I'm watching this for free.
