I have to say your tutorials and content in general are priceless. So much gratitude for you for your knowledge and for your ability to teach it the way you do. Thanks Juna!
Now, that's a tutorial... or what !!! You are a real priceless resource for all these nitty gritty things that look so cool and for which I don't have the beginning of a clue... Thank you so much ! And thank you Affinity... it might be the best investment I made ever in terms of publishing and design ! And the price...
Thank you for showing me a new technique Juna. I normally expand the stroke and subtract it from the layer below. Didnt even think about using the "Erase" blend mode. This way is a lot quicker and less destructive.
I generally use the FX panel for outlines. I find it much easier than going through all those steps. Love the erase tip. Didn't know it was there. Much thanks Juna.
Your videos are so helpful. I'm making a lot of progress, thanks to you. But as far as I've come, I'm still going back to these older videos of either learn or re-learn techniques. I battled with this one a few days ago and just couldn't remember how to do this...I was missing the "group" step. So I took a rest over the weekend and came back to it today. So glad to have found this video again! Thanks so much, Juna!
Yeah that was awesome. Didn't know you could you use it with erase had been trying to do things other ways and not working. This just made things so simple. Thanks again Juno for great tips.
Juno, thanks for producing this video. Vids like this are very helpful to beginners like me. I hope good Karma (and POD sales) come your way in return.
I bought a new computer and plan to start designing for Amazon Merch myself possibly using Affinity Designer. Any tips and tricks would be helpful. Also plan to use Affinity Photo as I have done photography for years. Have subscribed to catch all your videos. Thanks so much for being my teacher!
So useful, thank you. Would it be possible sometime to show us how to take two or more words and connect them so they come out as a single sticker, not all separate? Can't seem to make it work using strokes.
Juna (I'm on vacation and binge watching all ur videos!) This white outline if it's increased to 1/8 th inch can u use the image for stickers or would say redbubble add another1/8 th inch onto of that?
Thank you very much for the great video, Juna. My question/request is how people actually do the designs like what you showed in the Trend Credits. Of course they have different fonts, but the graphics as well, how they're designed or made, or are they purchased? Like the banners in the back of a lot of the shirts shown. Thanks for your consideration.
Yes... that is true. I figure it will convert back to CMYK when it goes to print so I don't want to use any RGB colors that are out of gamut... so I design in CMYK to make sure I have the right colors for printing
@@DetourShirts Hi! May I ask, pertaining to this Q, I thought DTG & Sublimation used RGB (as I understood, it prints basically like a desktop Inkjet Printer opposed to Offset, hence the POD)? I'm used to CMYK & prefer it, but Idk which is correct for this type of print, also I'm confused as to: WHY convert to RGB (at all) during export, IF they convert back to CMYK? As per WHAT I'd like to know, speaking of outlines... is there a way to take a shape & CREATE OUTLINES like Illustrator does with "Object > Path > Offset Path"? I know how you did this vid^ (works in .AI too) & I see CONTOUR Tool does create outlines, but what I'm trying to do is use a brush stroke (like PENCILS #128, any of the 128's) & then create an 'offset path' directly around all the segmented strokes, that I may ADD & CHANGE the NODES individually of the different points at the end of each stroke from the brush? Or even with Text, like in .AI with "Type > Create Outlines" if that makes sense. I also can't figure out how/where to increase the # of nodes?? Tks in advance for clarification.
Hi, Juna. Love this tutorial. Will have to view it a few more times since I am brand new to AD and my screen doesn't exactly look like yours does. I will have to practice to get this "erase" affect down. It is so frustrating trying to learn new software and not be able to do simple things. As to your question, any technique you are willing to teach us next is fine with me. I put up two dinosaur designs, so I will let you know if I get a sale. Thanks again.
I saw a shirt that had a fish with water coming off of it --- My question is -- would that print well with direct to garment printing? Because the water was transparent. It was a very cool shirt though!
Very helpful video, thank you. In my case, I've used a large sized image as the knockout part. So Affinity Designer treats that invisible (knocked out/erased) image as part of the total file and when I export the selection it takes the invisible graphic too and my design is not centred. Is there any way I can crop away the invisible knocked out part of the design as it's messing with the size of my total image. Also I try and centre the whole thing and it takes into account the erased out image and centres it based on that. I tried the crop tool but it makes the erased/knocked out image disappear totally... Any clues? Many thanks.
I'm guessing you can just delete the knockout part so it's not part of the art piece and then center everything on the artboard with no background and then export it all... that should do it.
Your videos are very helpful. I also have the Affinity Suite and wouldn’t trade them for anything. I tried to find the font that you use but it wouldn’t show up. Is there another site I can go to find it or is it hidden somewhere?
Love these tutorials. Can you show us how to replace a colour on an imported design? For example a pattern background or and element of a design Also do you have a list of your favourite fonts?
Thank you, I may have questions later as I am new to Affinity trying to learn this system coming from cricut. If you have anything pointers or suggestions to share, please do. Thanking you in advance.
Just wondering between using Affinity Designers to create these kinds of flat graphics or using Illustrator or Photoshop, does the menu for Affinity have better controls on outline options to quickly design and change settings. Price for Affinity Designer is very reasonable priced. Do you strongly recommend Affinity for creating graphic style Tshirts over Adobe Illustrator, for ease of use and some great control feature menus? Or is it just your own preference for use?
Great question.... I think you could use either.... Affinity Designer has everything I need to create my designs... The main switch for me was the subscription model that Adobe has. I personally try to stay away from paying a subscription if I can help it. Affinity Design is a one time fee of $50 ($25 if you get it half off). Do I think it's better than Illustrator as a program? No. But honestly I haven't used Illustrator for a couple of years now and I am still able to do my work and create beautiful designs. Adobe can and will increase monthly prices whenever they want. I like the peace of mind knowing that I can still work with my app, if my business brings in $10000 a month or $0 a month. One less thing to worry about. That's why I suggest Affinity Designer.
Another great tutorial, Juna. And related to something I have been trying to figure out since yesterday. You answered half of it with the Erase feature. That gave me a transparent outline for the text. But what if I also want the fill area of the text to let the graphic beneath show through? So the stroke would be completely transparent and the fill area would display the graphic on the lower layer. Do you know how to do that? Do you think it's even possible? Thanks!
You're very welcome! Yes it's possible. There are a couple ways I can think of to do that... you could mask the sunset into the letters or you could just have the outline of the letters erase the sunset and what would be left could show through the letters.
@@DetourShirts So strange. I thought I tried this already and it didn't work but I just tried it again and it does. I set the text fill to transparent and that shows the graphic below. Very useful information. What is the difference between erasing a layer and simply unchecking it in thenLayers panel?
Erase will knock out the layer from the layer(s) below it in a group.... unchecking it will just remove it from the art board so you can't see it.
Very nice thanks
Most welcome

My white outlines on a person comes out really jagged and bumpy, is there a setting to make it come out as smooth/straight as possible?
It's probably because your original artwork is jagged and bumpy... you need a smoother original
Yes, step by step for non designers.
