  • Several of the "Hulk" TV show fan channels, that specialize in the transformation shots, have begun uploading material again. I'm an old fan of the show... and while my channel doesn't specialize in this sort of thing, this is my contribution.
This edit combines one of my favorite •visual• shots of the transformation of the Hulk, back into Banner, with what I think of as the 'classic' reformation sound effect from the series.
The visual, is the change-back, after the second "Hulk-out" in the second two-hour movie, that followed the pilot episode, and which aired before the first season began.
I've always liked this visual sequence, because it has many good elements: It solidly shows the change from "Full Hulk" to the "Half-Hulk" stage, then shows the next step in the transformation from Half-Hulk to Banner with the white eyes. Unlike the "full-face" transformation in the pilot, this visual shows a background (the forest at the edge of "the swamp," rather than a non-distinct black background.) The makeup on Bill Bixby during the "Half Hulk"/"Demi-Hulk" stage, is also closer to what we'd get in the rest of the series. This Demi-Hulk visual "feels" more correct, than the version we glimpsed during the pilot.
The original sound effect that accompanies the transformations (to, and from, the creature) in "Death in the family," is "non-standard." The creators were still feeling their way with this part of the show. The sound effect of the transformation from the creature back into Banner, eventually standardized in the show's 2nd and 3rd season, and this is what I've dubbed here. The transformation sound is from the transformation back to Banner in "Mystery Man, Part Two."
It is somewhat tricky to actually locate an episode with the ideal "re-formation" sound effect. First, most episodes do not show the transformations back into Banner, as they're deemed not relevant to the story. When the transformations back to Banner ARE depicted, they often come with "defects" that make them unsuitable: They fade-in or fade-out too quickly; They're accompanied by music, or by characters talking, or by some other unwanted audio intrusion. This audio, is pretty good.
The visual portion of the transformation is less-than-perfect, due to the insertion of the green glow added to the creature's face (but not to the rest of his body!) The visual effects team could have been more subtle about this, but hey - they were feeling their way, and I'm prepared to cut them some slack.
Hats off to Kenneth Johnson and the other very talented cast and crew who created this wonderful series! Enjoy!
