Ron Grainer is the one who actually composed the Doctor Who theme tune. Murray Gold simply arranged/refreshed it in its latest incarnation. 😉
Bear in mind that this is a LIVE ORCHESTRAL version of the theme, not the 2023 TV version you'll hear.

They released a small 15 second trailer and the new song is a lot more polished in the studio version. It sounds a lot more like the 2008-2010 10th doctor theme

Sounds like the natural progression from the first RTD era. Really hear the original in the synths, with the bigger bombastic tunes taking it to the next level.
Much better then the 13th Doctors theme too. A 5yr old banging a tin of baked beans on a kitchen floor could've done better.
@@marksilgram80 nah 13s them tune was fine just sounded TOO much like the original with some kind of enhanced base and dub step reverb and echo effects added here and there when should've been something completely new like what we got for 11 and 12 opening credits
It's actually a mix of all Murray's previous versions. Elements of Peter's (particularly the bmm bmmmmms before the title moment) are very clearly in there and other elements seem inspired by Matt's (particularly with the choir element coming in at the end), but with Eccleston/Tennant elements under all of it.
Edit: Actually more than Murray. I've just noticed McGann elements.

@@ClintBandito Yes everything including Gold's music is back in play now let's just hope they get the color grade and camera work right for next year as well as keeping his music around for next 2 or 3 and the nostalgia play just might let the show live and feel like itself agian for next 4 to 5 years!
I feel the Murray Gold's hand in this and it's a perfect harmony of all Murray's themes together, symbolizing that this Tennant Doctor is not just a repeat of 10th, but is much more than that (also seen in the Screwdriver design, which has elements of 10th, 11th and 12th ones)

Everytime I listen to this it honestly feels like Murray Gold has gone on RUclips & listened to Fan composed title cards & cherry picked stuff to place into this, the honest feel of 2005 through the growth to 08 & 10 when the themes changed for RTD. It all sounds like it's packed in here with a neat ribbon saying "Comes with new titles" so when you hear the older melodies you almost immediately hear the new stuff swoosh in from underneath & take centre stage. It's a brilliant theme & fits Doctor Who very well imo ❤❤

When I see people losing their sh1t, saying that they are 'crying' listening to it and generally saying this new version of the theme is brilliant or epic or whatever, I realise that there are a lot of people out there who are easily impressed, easily pleased and who know nothing. But, hey ho. I guess it must take some talent to take a unique piece of music and make it sound 'ordinary'.
I can't resisit - "gone on RUclips & listened to Fan composed title cards & cherry picked stuff to place into this" makes me think how similar AI & humans really are.

@@Valox Exactly. It's funny how many seemingly-unrelated things remind me of that conclusion. Even Mission Impossible had me thinking of it, ironically not because of the machine-antagonist itself, but instead, the massive room full of people manually using typewriters to file stuff, and how the on-set of computers effectively wiped away those positions. Today, it'd be incredibly silly to say computers were bad, and were a threat to jobs etc., rather than a supplement to creatives to help them create more. And the same can be said with today's controversy.
Sounds pretty good! They took the drums of Smith’s, the bassline of Tennant, the piano of mcgann and the Derbyshire melody. Overall, not bad. Good to have you back Murray!!

Wow, just wow... this truly is the theme to show-off everything great about the Doctor Who themes through the ages!
While this theme is probably the 'safest' out of the three new themes, I can't say I'm disappointed since so many amazing pieces of musical DNA from both classic and modern Who themes are all present and correct here! Everything from the very RTD era sounding synths, to the orchestration, percussive drum rhythms and piano line from the Paul McGann movie, and even all the way to the OG Delia Derbyshire eerie effects from straight outta the 60s, this theme really has it all while managing to not feeling overstuffed!
Incredible work here Murray Gold, you've done it again, truly an amazing theme tune for an amazing show!
To be fair, you can only do so much with the main theme compared to character themes
I like it, it’s like a mix of 10’s and 11’s theme with some piano riffs from the 1996 tv movie thrown in.
Glad I’m not the only one that noticed the movie theme in here.
I enjoy the little 12th Doctor’s Strange intro sector being the…how would I describe it…y’know the…I don’t even know if there is a term for it… “da duh, duh da”? Idfk

I've said this before, but this theme is probably my favourite Dr Who theme of all time (inc. The 8th Doctor's Theme). It combines the best musical cues and leitmotifs from all of the previous themes whilst having its own unique sound to it, making it also feel fresh and new like with every iteration of the famous theme thus far.
I'm so hyped to hear the studio version of this incredible theme in all its glory. Murray Gold is the man.

So, so, so, good to hear Murray Gold's theme again. 😊
Most of the vibes I get from this arrangement come from the TV movie and I love that theme, so it gets my approval for that. Very much taps into the "thrill of adventure" side of the show, I love the use of a choir and the middle 8 is always a joy to hear.
That said, I would've liked it to also reflect the mystery and otherworldliness as well, which I got more from the 2005, 2010 and 2018 arrangements if we're talking purely NuWho themes. It also sounds too busy that it's drowning out the ever iconic bassline, but that might likely just be down to hearing it from an orchestra in a concert hall, so it'll be interesting to hear the broadcast mix.
Really good arrangement, but not looking to be a favourite.
these 60th specials are the closest thing to another movie we've gotten so far. A spectacular theme, a giant budget, return actors, universal stakes, what more could you want?
Will this be just for the three 60th episodes? I have a feeling that it will, it harks back so much to the RTD era, literally using aspects of all previous versions, whilst at the same time being overtly boisterous in a celebratory way.
This is definitely a tune for the specials.
I’m guessing if Gold is still on board beyond that (has that been confirmed?) he’ll have something very different up his sleeve for the Fifteenth Doctor’s era.

RTD's confirmed he's staying though. Same as Gold, he's already composed themes for the 15th and for Sunday

@@aloysiusthefish7076 For Series 14 too? Oh well, I stand corrected. tbh kinda not feeling it then, if its the new official theme. Its too much of a mash-up of previous ones. Ncuti deserves his own take on it imho.
@@stevetayler9518 I expect the TV version will be quite different sonically to this orchestral performance. The same arrangement, but it will be interesting to hear how it’s been realised in the studio with potentially more electronic aspects. I think this theme sounds heroic and reminds me of the TV movie version. I can understand the desire for it to harken less to Gold’s earlier versions, though
I like it so far, but I also think it'll sound quite a bit better as a studio recording. As someone with experience in a similar space for plays and musicals, live mixing - much less live _playing_ with all these different elements that you're only hearing via monitor earpiece - can be an absolute nightmare, and the entire 60th Anniversary concert seemed to suffer from some poor level and/or mic choices. The choir, especially, seemed to be hung out to dry, and constantly had to fight the orchestra to even slightly represent the original presence of vocals. Not to mention that the orchestra had some difficulty finding a consistent tempo at times, which also seems to be the case here.
All that is to say, I'm holding my proper opinion until we get the studio album for the 60th Anniversary.

I love the little musical references to the 1990's Latin Theme by Keff McCulloch with the piano
I feel like it's a perfect cross between the themes used for Eccleston and Tennant and the theme used for Smith

the first few listenings i wasn't really paying attention, but now being here and hearing some of the 2010 theme's lead synth, i'm so hyped.

It sounded too high or airy for my liking, would like the sound to be more filled out, hopefully in the final mix it's more filled out with either bass or electronic elements.
The beginning seemed a bit tedious, and the end a bit out of blue

murray gold literally came back for vengance
To me it feels like it's got almost too many notes, but it's not soo overwhelming as the new version of the show theme tune.
I hope the opening bassline is more prominent in the final mix but other than that I like it a lot. Easily the best we've had since the Series 4 version.
I think this is just a live version for the concert - I imagine the final studio version is more refined

Not really. It's just that the previous era - Jerdeh Shittaker and Chris Chinball - was so bad... anything would be golden compared to that.
I really hope this takes the mccoy approach and uses the middle eighth in the opening cause it is quite short without it if im being honest but it does the original justice.

@@PianistTanooki well it was a bass and guitars updated version of the 1-3 theme so we could see this theme for the next 4 series or a updated one
Generally I like it though it's a bit brassy at times like a mariachi band got involved but it has energy and freshness while maintaining the classic essentials.
It's not fresh at all. It just sounds like every other Murray Gold Doctor Who theme. Which, in turn, sound like every other action movie theme. A shame we can't have something original and mysterious again... just generic big orchestral stuff that we hear everywhere.

I think this has too much going on, combing all the nostalgic bits from other themes sounds nice on paper, but when you translate it into actual music it becomes an inchorent mess.

13s theme was an attempt at recreating Delia Derbyshires version from the 60s, it just didn't land sadly. Im glad the original rebooted version Is back

Gold's themes are a bit too orchestral for my taste, I prefer the otherworldly feeling of the original and the S11-13 one. And a special nostalgia for the 80s ones too!
