  • #36: Yamaha XT250 Dual Sport Motorcycle Review and Trail Ride #purplecollarlife #outdoorgans July 21, 2020
    In this video, I review my 2015 Yamaha XT250 dual sport (street and trail) motorcycle. Having owned both at the same time, I explain the key differences between the XT250 and the WR250R. I also take a ride through our property and the trails and woods near our land.
    Things I love about the XT250: low seat height, low RPM torque, fuel injected, great mpg, disc brakes front and rear, led display screen, light weight, tight turning radius, nice exhaust note, high ground clearance, good suspension travel front and rear, perfect for in the woods on trail rides.

      I know the feeling! I spent 27 days straight in Florida (away from PA) and really missed being able to take a little ride on my XT250.

    I just purchased two of them, one for me, one for my wife. Went trail riding yesterday, tons of fun. They are great bikes. We also ride Triumph Tiger 900’s. Best adventure bikes we have ever had. Thanks for the video.

      Thanks for sharing! Keep us posted on how you like them. I keep telling my wife and daughter that we could start looking for nice used XT250's for them - but they enjoy the Honda Foreman and the Polaris Ranger.

    Thank you for your response. I found a 2015 XT 250 with 3000 miles on her. In excellent condition.
    I have negotiated down to 4300. How does that sound?
    I’ll probably drive an hour to check it out in the next few days.

      Rick - I haven't shopped for a dual sport in a while. I do know that they really seem to hold their value - from the XT250, and the WR250R, to the Honda CRF250L - I've seen prices really high in the past. First of all - I think you'll love the bike. I found mine with less than 500 miles on it, and picked it up for an outstanding price. I do see that there are some dealers selling the leftover 2020 year models in my area for under $5,000. I think that for my area (not sure where you're located), a 2015 model XT250 with 3000 miles on it would be priced a bit lower than $4300.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hey, I've been looking everywhere but I never really found much about the xt250's low end Torque, glad you mentioned it, it might as well cement my decision in buying it. I'm upgrading from a Yamaha xtz125.

      You'll love the XT250. Glad you found my video.

      It's not that first gear is too high on the 250 its just that the 14T makes 2nd and third totally useable on long steeper uphills in the dirt/rocks.

    • @PurpleCollarLife

      I'm planning on doing the 14-tooth conversion over the winter. Sounds like a good project in the garage.

      @@PurpleCollarLife 20 minutes if you know what you're doing and have everything you need at your fingertips. However, I can normally stretch anything into an hour.. I'm pretty sure you'll be impressed at the result. For $ 20 it's a no brainer unless you live on all flat terrain. That's the only way I'd keep the 15T.. but then why would you buy this bike ?

  • @ngzcaz
    @ngzcaz 4 года назад +2

    If that's the kind of riding you normally do, you have the perfect bike.. If you don't ride the road much, might I suggest dropping a tooth on the countershaft sprocket ( front ) ? Makes 2nd and third much more useable and 1st gear like a tractor.

    • @PurpleCollarLife

      NoBs - I've thought about doing that. Would it require me to make any change to the chain? Any idea how much top speed I would lose if I do hit the pavement?

    • @ngzcaz
      @ngzcaz 4 года назад +3

      @@PurpleCollarLife No change required if you don't do the swingarm mod like I did. I'm not sure you lose any top speed especially when going up a slight uphill. You might even gain a bit which most folks don't realize unless you live in a completely flat land area. I still hit 74mph and wasn't quite wound out. Rev's were singing however, wouldn't hold it at that speed for more than a few seconds. It loves 45 to 50 on gravel roads. 55mph is fine, 60 is pushing it a bit for a sustained length of time. The increase in perceived power is well worth it, at least it was to me.. a 14 and even a 13 tooth is available online though you might search a bit for it. I think I found mine on either ebay or Amazon.

      @@ngzcaz Thanks a ton for the info! I'll search for it on Amazon. I'm assuming the switchover is pretty easy - loosen chain, unbolt sprocket and replace? I'd appreciate if you'd subscribe! I'm trying to grow the channel.

    • @ngzcaz
      @ngzcaz 4 года назад

      @@PurpleCollarLife I've already subscribed. Loosen the chain, push the rear wheel forward as far as you can. No need to take off the chain even from the rear sprocket, just take the front sprocket off and insert the new one. You'll instantly notice the difference. I've always done this even to 400cc motocross bikes and I've always been the guy at the top of the hillclimb while the others were on the bottom looking up. Maybe a co-incidence that I was the only one to gear down... but maybe not..

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  4 года назад

      @@ngzcaz I'm going to give it a try. If I don't like it, I can always switch back. But like you said, the riding I do probably makes sense to change it out. And the process sounds pretty simple.

    Does the little funky looking mini fender above the front tire because clogged with mud?
    I’m currently shopping for one, considering a xt 225 also

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  3 года назад +1

      Hi Rick - Great question and I wondered that also before I purchased the XT250. I've found that for me, that mini fender never clogs. I do rinse it out after washing, but I find that the little fender actually works pretty good. I've read on some forums that people have removed the fender if they install oversized tires on the XT250 (because there's not clearance for larger tires), and said they missed having a fender. Thanks for watching. I have no regrets about my XT250.

      @ngzcaz 2 года назад

      @@PurpleCollarLife Tell the other guys to simply drill new holes for the inner front fender to raise it. You want to keep it to keep it to keep the fins cleaner for cooling purposes. And also to keep some of the gunk off the rider..

    You need a chain saw mounted on the bike.

      @@PurpleCollarLife My grandson goes to Mercyhurst University just off Lake Erie.. Might be in your neck of the woods. Further south and east, there's a Dual Sport ride in Bald Eagle State Forest on Saturday. 95 miles, obviously some have to be gravel or paved for a short stretch or it's going to be a long day at 10 to 20 mph through the single track areas. First time for me, hoping for good weather.
