    Good find hedlundk, both the bike and the rider.

    I wanted to update those interested in the XT250 on a recent purchase I made - I picked up a pre-owned 2013 XT250 - the fuel injected model. I will post some comparisons between my carb'd version and the new FI model - should be interesting to see the differences - so stay tuned!

  • @DualsportChic
    @DualsportChic 8 лет назад +17

    Update on my XT250 - over the last few thousand miles, I have been experiencing what I can only describe as a fuel starvation issue at high RPM/high speed - where the bike momentarily loses power - especially noticeable on the highway. The problem had progressively gotten worse over time. The first attempt to address the issue involved changing out the spark plug cap to ensure it was getting proper spark. No change, so we addressed the carb and found it to be a sticky needle and seat in the carb. Now that those items have been replaced, bike runs great once again - top speed back up to 74 mph! 31,400 miles and counting . . . : )

      Bassghost Baybay I was considering buying a CBR500r as a commuter and a Honda grom for fun but based on these reviews this. Bike is right in the sweet spot. If traffic get to heavy it won’t be to hard to hop over a curve vs the street bike or get up to speed on the highway vs grom. Thinking I’ll get one of these too as my first bike.

    You did a great job on the video of the XT250. This was the most informative review of this little bike I have seen so far. Another thing about these bikes made by Yamaha, is they have stronger frames than their competition such as the Honda and can actually carry a pretty good load for an extended trip with camping gear and etc. without risk of the frame cracking with gear, loaded on the tail rack and through some soft Panniers such as Wolfman Bags which are some excellent soft waterproof bags. I personally use Wolfman bags on some of my other bikes. That Wolfman tank bag Victoria has, to me is the best tank bag to have. I would not trade mine for anything on the market right now. I would not hesitate one bit to bring this bike on a long extended trip. Just have to stick to two lane roads and ride at a slower pace to get there.

    Thanks folks for chiming in on the video - as you might be able to tell, I adore my XT 250 - he is affectionately named XT Momo. He's got over 27K miles now and still running strong and still my favorite bike in the stable. As a matter of fact, I love this bike so much that I purchased a second one (another 2008) to take over for the one you see in this video once the day comes to retire him.
    Keith and I very much appreciate the feedback on the video as well as information on the XT250 in general - so please keep it coming!

      +Randy Carner Thank you so much Randy. I treated the bike to a week at the moto-spa in November - new chain/sprockets, brake pads, rear rotor, battery, oil change, and a few other small things. Just after that I hit the 30K mark on 12/26! XT Momo is now happily hibernating for the winter on the trickle charge and looking forward to his next big mileage milestone. The bike is bullet proof - not one mechanical malfunction in 30,000 miles. Best bike I have ever owned - hands down.

    "can go anywhere you take your KLR"???? Dude, that bike can go so much much further with much more panache than your old KLR. Victoria perfectly explains why the Yamaha is great... and so much better for what you guys are doing than the KLR. And I'm a big KLR fan (and owner)... Tell Victoria to get on down to Mexico with her awesome bike! :)

      Awesome! I am looking hard at dual sport to purchase next year. Of all the heap of many bike's and scooters I have owned and own now, I miss my dual sport the most. I traded my Honda CRF230L this year. Worst thing I ever done! Lol. I have some good true friends that are also you tube members ( Hawk Girl and her hubby ) that have XT's and like yalls they have been all over with them and in some extreme terrain! So even though I am a Honda guy at heart (currently own 3) the XT is pulling at my heat strings pretty hard. :-D

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  7 лет назад +4

      It's one of those bikes that you don't hear much negativity about. I personally own a WR250R and love it. It's got the upgraded suspension and I can fit on it, otherwise I would have looked at an XT. Victoria can go anywhere on the XT that I can go on the WR. Cheap and reliable and fun. When you are riding a 250 on the dirt you don't wish you had a bigger bike.

    • @DualsportChic
      @DualsportChic 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the kind words on the video - my 2008 XT now has 33,000 miles on it - and still going strong after another great year leading Northeast Dualsport Riders. I love this bike more every time I sit on it. I have 5 bikes in the stable and this one is still my favorite. I just picked up a fuel injected 2013 XT250 this summer - still have yet to register it - but I will outfit it to be a true enduro/DS - with upgraded suspension - full knobbie tires etc. - Looking forward to the build. For my original 2008 (XT Momo) - he will continue to lead NDR and I am hoping to reach 50K miles prior to performing any major engine work - which friends say is totally possible!

      I just picked up a 2013 XT250 myself. I wanted something street legal, light, nimble, low maintenance, and capable to explore single track and fire roads in MD, WV, VA, and PA. My knees are toast so no jumping for me. Since she has so much experience on the '08, I'm curious to know what kinds of mods she plans to do to the '13. Also, did she get it checked for the air induction pipe and hose recall?

    I own both a 2014 Kawasaki KLR 650 and a 2014 Yamaha XT 250. Both are great motorcycles. I was a little skeptical of the build quality of the Kawasaki because when I was a young rider 45 years ago Kawasaki's were known to be very fast but they were not built very well, but this KLR is a extremely well built machine. Now for the Yamaha XT 250, it is a fantastic machine, well worth the money. I put a larger primary sprocket on it for a little more top end speed. I use this fine motorcycle to ride around old logging roads in the Ozark mountains to take pictures of old abandoned houses. It is an absolute dream if you like to trail ride. Yamaha has always manufactured extremely high quality products. I even have a Yamaha electronic drum kit since I am a rock drummer-----same supreme quality. This is an excellent video. Bravo Zulu to you!

    I have the same Yamaha 2008 Xt 250 I purchased brand new back in 2008. It has 25,000 miles on it and still running strong today. My only upgrade is I change the front sprocket I went up 1 tooth I also put on Bridgestone tires from the Suzuki DR 400.
    This is the way it should have come front Yamaha. It produces must better torque through all the gears and gives a much better top end speed. I top out at 80 mph I’m 190 pounds I ride on the freeway a lot most of the 25,000 miles came from the freeway.
    Yamaha make a very good product I will not let it go.

    Hi Victoria, I have the very same motorbike, same colour year and everything. It is fun watching you brag on your machine as I feel the same way. I have had many bikes (mostly Yamaha) over the years & this XT 250 Yamaha is a gem for sure. I got it a couple of years ago from a friend (who regrets selling it now) with less than 10k on it. It's just like new - like yours. I put about 2500 kms a year (Canada) to work mostly and put it in the truck and take RVing. It only has about 15k now. No matter what else I buy in Motorcycles, my guy (called it the Zebra) is in my barn forever. Keep up the great work, always enjoy your review updates!

Looking forward to putting up more XT videos with Keith on my 2013 model - we'll see how FI feels compared to my other carb'd model. I have also upgraded the suspension significantly on the newer XT so it will feel different than what I have been used to with the '08.

    I've got a 2005, it's a great bike, it's heavy as all hell but I can keep up with all of my friends 2 smokers just fine, I ride it like it's a trail bike though, I just recently got confident enough on it to start getting some air, and the bike can handle it just fine.

    Great video! I stumbled across this while searching for some mods for my bike.
    I just bought a 2015 XT250 and Victoria is spot on with the price point. I actually made it out the door with mine, brand new for 5300. I previously owned a DRZ400S and for my skill level in the dirt it was really just a bit much weight and size-wise for what I needed in order to develop better confidence in low-traction situations. I was originally looking for an XT225 after riding one on my first ever real-deal dirt extravaganza, and having also ridden one at So-Cal Supermoto and I am more than happy with going with the newer model. I have a 31 inch inseam and I'm quite familiar with riding motorcycles around a racetrack and I think this bike has a very good balance of power/forgiveness/agility for every type of rider. I mean, it may not do 100 mph on the street, but then if you're hoping for it to do that then what are you buying a dual sport for?! And really, you should be taking it to the track :P
    Still, great job and great mods! I am looking forward to doing some adventure rides and moto-camping with mine here very soon. I recently took it up some mountain roads and I was very happy with it's performance. The suspension hardly needs adjustment at stock settings, and the tires are very versatile. Although, I wouldn't recommend riding it over ice lol! Definitely worth every penny.

    I have to agree! Although in Montana, we would have a quite different definition of 'hard forest trails'! Ours are true "singletrack" (horse trails) and the steepness and technical difficulties are shared equally with the tremendous vistas you earn as you go. I have 2 of the earlier XT 225 Yamaha's and a slightly newer Suzuki DRZ 250. Unless you're talking a full-on, WFO hill climb, I've come to respect the XT more than the DRZ- especially if you're riding from town to the trailhead. The XT is just a better all around dual purpose choice, and is also hands-down a more user friendly mount for women, beginners or full sized like me.(6' &235 lbs.)

    I consider a carburetor a huge advantage over EFI. Seems people come along these days and just seen to assume EFI is better without knowing how complex it is, how expensive and difficult it is to work on, how expensive those Chinese made electronic parts are, and that when an EFI system breaks down, it's dead. no limping it home. Even running it out of gas will usually destroy the fuel pump, a $400-$500 item. And on top of that it really doesn't work any better than a modern CV carb.
    HID headlights are dangerous, they can (and do) blind oncoming drivers and cause accidents. They are also illegal if they did not come on the vehicle from the manufacturer. If you need more than a modern halogen headlight, you have vision problems. If you want better visibility (in the daytime) Get a headlight and brakelight modulator.
    I'm a heavier rider (220 pounds) I have an '01 XT225, the bike before the XT250, that I have had for over 12 years and nearly 60,000 miles. I had to replace the suspension due to my weight, I also put a 4 gallon aftermarket tank on, as well as a centerstand (hard to fix a flat when you have no way to hold the bike up to remove the wheels), a kickstarter, and a rack. The XT225 also has the advantage of having a cleanable foam oil filter instead of a replaceable paper filter.
    I strongly recommend anyone looking for one of these consider a slightly used model with a carb. I would recommend the last year they were made with a carb. If you are big enough, I highly recommend a DR650 or KLR650, as both still have carbs AND aftermarket centerstands available.

      Thanks Gerald, those are good suggestions. I had a KLR for many years and the carburetor worked flawlessly.

    • @DualsportChic
      @DualsportChic 7 лет назад

      I have had next to no problems with the carb (exception of gummed up due to old gas) - they work great and are easy to fix trailside vs. EFI.

    Like I stated, one would not want to get too extreme in drilling holes on the back side of the muffler as the possibility of the change in the mufflers dynamic pressure may cause problems with the bikes computer controlled fuel injection delivery system. When I put the holes in I was prepared to go ahead and by a new performance slip on muffler if my theory did not work. I did realize a little bit better throttle response and just a bit more power when accelerating through the gears, so just to sum it all up the little modification was a success.

    • @DualsportChic
      @DualsportChic 7 лет назад +1

      I do not condone changing anything about the current exhaust - any time you modify something, it takes the bike away from factory spec and limits longevity of the machine. For a small performance boost, you most likely end up shortening the years of your engine. My bike is stock and I'm pretty sure that is why my mileage is what is is with no work having to be done to the engine thus far.

    My wife is seriously looking at one for her first bike (she's 67, 150lbs, 5'-2", with a 30 inch inseam, hence the search for a smaller bike). She's concerned about the bike's ability to maintain highway speeds (60-65+), and how it handles wind. We'd be riding the "2-lane blacktop to get to the start of rides like the Washington BDR, which passes close to our home a little over midway. the BDR's are the kind of adventure riding we'd be doing, but other than WA, I feel we'd have to rent a one-way van to haul our bikes, then another at the finish!

    • @AdventuresWithMe00
      @AdventuresWithMe00  2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment and question Alex. I can't speak for the XT250, but I do have the WR250. It's not a highway bike. Maybe to jump on for an exit, but that's about it for me. I've tried and you have to goose the throttle too much and there's too much wind buffeting. It feels unstable frankly. If I need to make time I do the two lane paved roads at 50mph. It will do that all day long. But a 300 mile day on that bike is very tiring.

    • @alexmacdonald258
      @alexmacdonald258 2 года назад

      @@AdventuresWithMe00 That's pretty much what I feel would be the case-especially being tired after a long pavement ride. It' sounds superb for the forest roads, but not for pavement. Thanks for the response! We'll maybe take a closer look at the KTM 390 Adventure with an eye to lowering it.

    • @DualsportChic
      @DualsportChic Год назад +1

      Hi Alex - the XT can do 73 mph top speed per the GPS - but it's a push to keep it at 65+ for a length of time. And like any small bike, wind does kick it around. But given your wife's dimensions, it would fit her perfectly from an ergonomic standpoint.

Luckily it was still under warranty and they replaced it. But the fact that it crapped out so soon and after no tech riding at all,, makes me leary of purchasing a stock rear shock. @@DualsportChic What am I missing? That's my point (I think). IF the Garmin is wired to the battery there would be no "off". It's always powered. So how would the Garmin think/want to shut itself off? Seems like it would need to be wired to the ignition for that to happen.

      @@AdventuresWithMe00 I get that it would remind you to shut off IF it's wired to the ignition and it senses no power. And IF you remember to use the on/off switch things are good but if it's always wired to the battery and you forget it would stay on right?

      @@cowboy7x It senses that it is on battery power without ignition and asks you if you wish to stay that way - if you don't respond it automatically shuts down. I have a Garmin 550 - at least my unit does. You can also wire through ignition so when ignition goes out so does the unit. Up to whomever does the wiring on what they want to do. I don't do my own - I take it to a mechanic.

    I have found on my 2014 XT250 a way to make the engine breath a bit better. I drilled a few one quarter inch holes on the very back of the muffler body and found that the throttle response improved as well as better engine performance and this mod did not have any interference with the motorcycles fuel injection computer. I did this very conservatively, not putting too many holes. I did not want to buy an expensive aftermarket muffler so I took this little short cut and I was very pleased with the results. This Yamaha is an absolutely superb dual sport bike. I am a very old man and I will keep this bike until my life ends. Viva La XT 250!!

      it would be interesting to see a video of this and how it sounds. I would think you'd have to be very careful because too many holes would create some real driveability problems.
      Thanks for the comment.

      Not a good plan. I do not condone changing anything about the current exhaust - any time you modify something, it takes the bike away from factory spec and limits longevity of the machine. For a small performance boost, you most likely end up shortening the years of your engine. My bike is stock and I'm pretty sure that is why my mileage is up where it is without having to have done any work on the engine thus far.

      as funny as this comment was you need to remember that he is conversing with her as well, all the little comments i think are more for acknowledgement that he IS following what she is saying........okay?........great

      mcwresident Good point. I'm sorry it disrupted the video. I didn't realize how much until after I was editing it. Having Victoria mic'ed up would have minimized it. I will definitely watch myself with all future videos. Thanks for the feedback.
