- Let's answer the question. Can I record drums without a 'real' recording studio?
Recording drums isn't easy. Recording drums while on location is even harder. Doing all of the above in a room that you haven't heard may just be insanity, especially during the lockdown.
Cables die, things break and then you have to trust it won't fall apart. This is where the Dante enabled Focusrite Red system can come to the rescue.
I travel up to my Sam Kubricks gaff (formerly of the band Shields) to test the system and see if we can't get some incredible drum recordings nailed.

I recently switched from 18 years of using Ableton Live for production to Logic. This just confirms my switch. I love Live but I’ve found recording live guitars, bass and drums a bit underwhelming. george, you achieve the best drum tones I have ever heard! when I heard the offering for the first time my life changed :-) The music itself (this drummer is going crazy!!!) off course but also the drum sound was a big thing for my brain ... I went on and heard full sundowning and am in love with every single member of sleep token for their art and you for your great engineering job on this record! you are amazing and I love your work! cheers dude!
Awesome video, those drums sound absolutely fantastic. The snare has this real pop to it that is across the Loathe and Sleep token tracks that I love and have no idea how to approach it. Hopefully your NTM helps that haha.
I would pay you decent money for an exhaustive drum production/engineering course.

the drums tones were so crisp, love it. Also back at my previous college were used Dante, Rednet(focusrite) and it made things so much simpler especially with having multiple studios on campus and being able to track in two spaces if needed.
Hey man! I really respect your productions, those raw drums sounds we're mad. I'm actually going to do some drum tracking for a band in a studio i've never been too before here in Bristol and as much as i'm looking forward to it, I'm definitely bricking it. Great video! Sometimes recording drums on location can give you a really interesting sound. I've had good luck and bad luck in the past. When it worked it took the recording to a new direction. When it didn't I spent hours cleaning up the recording in post.

The combination of Adam's playing and your audio'ing is top notch. Perfect snare sound. Any idea what name Adam is going to be releasing this stuff under? Also hopefully some of that beautiful ringyness of the snare is going to make it into the final mix? As someone else commented it would be nice to get a new record that goes all in on a modern nu-metal cranked and ringy snare tone!

Drums sound amazing both raw and processed, did you use any samples in the processed? Also do you gate your snare mic? Just curious how you deal with the cymbal bleed “tttssss” every time the snare gate opens if you do use a gate. Looking forward to more, really dig your content/work 👍🏻

I was already aware of DANTE system because of live sound. These focusrite looks really interesting. Have you tried to connect with external interfaces or preamps? (by external interface I mean: not the same brand, let's say UAD)
Those baby Genelecs look sexy, I'd love to have your opinion on them (pros/cons). I have HS5 right now for mobile tracking and I'd like to go smaller (and better?).

I haven't tested out DANTE with brands other than Focusrite currently, simply as I don't think a lot of other companies support it (yet), as it means building more digital cards into the unit itself. Maybe in time it'll be come standardised. Who knows?!
I think the mini genelecs are fab for travel work. I wouldn't want to mix on them.

Kick mic is the dual element mic by Audio Technica. Maybe I can go more in depth in a future vid :)
