This channel is easily one of the best finds I've made on youtube in a long while. Every video makes me discover something new, like how I'm now convinced I need a Data Bender in my life
I just found it and it seem chill and full of knowledge. I'm not much of a modular guy myself but its fun to watch someone who knows what he's doing :) Instant sub.
Glad I stumbled across your channel. Fantastic stuff. I like that you have found a lot of lesser known uses & techniques for modules & patches that have been covered extensively...yet, you show new things that can be done.
I never had the simple idea to just 1v/oct sequence rings on a stable pitch input signal. And then just scan sweet spots on the input signal. Thank you
"I kind of want to try the pitch bend mode on the Data Bender... But I also don't want to ruin it..." [Literally 12 seconds later, tries the pitch bend mode on the DB.] Newsflash, it didn't ruin it.
In the first patch with the MCO, when striking with the gate input on Rings you are activating the internal white noise burst as well as processing the MCO - so if you drop the gate input on Rings and control the MCO coming into the input with an enveloped VCA instead or intermittently, then you will get a different variation also. The plucking sounds will disappear. Nice patch, Rings is one of the best weird filters out there, works well with chords too.
The Drum sequence at min. 19:00 is insane!!!! Could the same thing be done using the DFAM? I’m super new to modular but I am picking up rings to accompany Beads and my DFAM and Keystep. Hoping to be able to achieve something similar to this sound.
Rings was one of those modules that I was a little bit *meh* about, having seen it used so extensively for those classic Rings sounds. I'm planning some expansions from my current 84hp 3u case to a 6u case for later in the year, and you've persuaded me that I definitely have to get Rings now though! Great musical examples as always. Thanks!
YESSS !!! (I just bought a second rings in my rack just for that !! (If I was crazy rich, I would try the ring-ception, how does it sounds with like 5 Rings, chaining them into one another ? I'm curious :) ) and yeah, I bought a data bender because of you ! awesome little beast ! I'm so glad I've found you, your videos are amazing
I’m not sure whether it’s because I have a Rings clone rather than the MI version, or simply because I’m a bit cr@p and lack patience, but I cannot coax the wide variety of pleasant tones you’ve managed to conjure in this- or the previous- video. As a result it’s on my ‘prepared to lose it if I find another voice’ list- it’s 14hp that’s not working for me… Oh, and subbed. Seems only fair.
Once again another great video! I’ve honestly never been super impressed by rings but I didn’t know you could bring external audio into it that’s interesting. Is there a buffer? It sounded like you were speeding it up and slowing it down in the end with that Fantasia tape.
For putting the OP-1 into the IN input on Rings, are you boosting the OP-1 signal to modular levels? Or are you just feeding Rings line level? And if you're boosting it- what are you using?
Normally I use the Pico Input module to boost the OP1. My rack was full tho in this video so I was using a preamp which was off-camera. I think it will work fine even without being boosted tho :)
Nice 👍 this is my favourite thing to do with rings also. Try a band pass filter between MCO and Rings....also sending the same pitch info to Rings maybe with probability from Pamela's 👍😎
Great video lad. I am just building my rack after playing around with Mother-32 and DFAM for a few years. I just spent an afternoon following along with you on my rack. While I couldn't get too close to your sounds, I had a blast, got some gorgeous sounds and learned a ton about Rings. I can't wait to spend some more time on the weekend and run DFAM through it. I like how you run the two sequences at the same time - I do this all the time with an external sequencer into the Mother-32 and always get some interesting and unexpected results.
Ah lovely I bought the rings along with Elements off the back of the last vid! You ever explored the Doepfer ribbon controller? Seems like it could be amazing with this module.
Braw sounds mon! Following on from your other video, have you tried guitar into Rings? I couldn't get anything other than a deranged screechy flanger sound. I'm inspired to give it another try, I think the key is probably feeding it some CV in the same key as whatever you're playing on the guitar.
I simply love what you’re doing with Rings! I’m completely new to modular synthesis but after watching your videos I’m inclined to give it a try :) May I pick your brain about what modules to get in order to create the most basic setup that would work with Rings? VCO, VCA, an LFO perhaps? I want to start experimenting without dipping too deep into my savings :) Any suggestion would be much appreciated! Thank you! :)
Cheers man! Yea you pretty much need a VCA for most sound sources and modulating everything is what makes modular fun so defo get an LFO. You'll also need to something to control the pitch of RIngs - either a modular sequencer or an external one. I also love having multi-FX in the rack which can be modulated for really unique effects :)
Do a lot of research and don't buy everything at once. Start with the basic pieces and build your way up so you learn what you're looking for and what you like before you spend all your money and modules you won't need.
As soon as you bring in the Data Bender... gooood night... It's like an auto-sp404 fx module. And that drums jam! My only criticism is running it in alternating stereo mode - Kept jumping between headphone sides and at a few points it was only on one side. But the crunch and bass was amazing!
I can't decide between a minibrute modular system expensive to me or nifty nice but build not great so I will get a yamaha piano and learn to play it perhaps I use my 2 8 tracks mini brute 2 and arturia v with beatstep pro and free synths or a are 2600 I just wish I had a wee bit of talent and I would play the spoons and sound by god that sounds good like an arp2600 no I getting yam peiono and a dictionary I not a slave to adds or am I I want a nifty
Weird, I was watching the first Rings video you did earlier today, grabbed some lunch and then came back and had a notification of this second one. Really helping me rekindle some love for this module. Definitely want to go nuts with that ext input now. One sort of noobie question.. the panning. Does rings have different stereo panning allocation modes like Surface? I noticed when you were doing the two sequences together, first the mco then rings, the panning on rings was bouncing hard left/right. Is that in Rings, Data Bender or something else?
@@charlesbronson2806 ooh, I didn’t consider “macro-modulating” both of them at once. I recently got an Addac VC Transitions which could be perfect for the job. I’ll have to give this a shot!
@@TheUnperson You should get one, it’s pretty rad. It definitely took me a bit to really start vibing with it since it has its particular flavor and since a small amount of modulation can do so much, but I’ve come to really enjoy it now that I’ve spent time with it. It’s cool as a funky LFO, too!
Love this, as always. ❤ One thing I do a lot - maybe too much! - is mult Rings' output and feed it back into the input. That instantly changes the characteristic Rings sound into something new. (Note that from a cold start the result is silence, so I either get Rings going before I plug in the input or I mix in something else, perhaps noise.) I love the result but I use it so much it's kind of become a fourth recognizable mode of Rings for me - I need to experiment more with altering the feedback signal before it hits the input to see if I can change it further.
Ok…mind blown. How many of us here can raise their hand if they had NO IDEA that Rings was so capable of such creativity? I’m not familiar with Data Bender. What does it contribute? A big thank you. Awesome Rings vids!
in your duel sequence demonstration, could you patch the STO Out into the Rings In directly? or did you need to come out of the mixer to make a "feedback" type effect from your mixer channel 3 into Rings In? thanks.
This channel is easily one of the best finds I've made on youtube in a long while. Every video makes me discover something new, like how I'm now convinced I need a Data Bender in my life
You do! This channel is definitely one of the reasons I got my data bender lol
Data bender. Must have :)
Seriously serious. Such a great channel 👍🏼
I just found it and it seem chill and full of knowledge.

Thank you!! You absolutely do need a data Bender! ☺️
Glad I stumbled across your channel. Fantastic stuff. I like that you have found a lot of lesser known uses & techniques for modules & patches that have been covered extensively...yet, you show new things that can be done.
Cheers man! I think it helps having a small set-up which means you gotta squeeze all you can out it :)
The data is doing the heavy lifting.. impressed but I’d need both, and that’s not my usual answer !
I do tend to put the data Bender on absolutely everything lol
Well, colour me subscribed.

How about Clouds into Rings?
Ohhh, that causes a glitch in the matrix!
makin me not sell my rings
I think you might be the Bob Ross of synthesis
Best compliment ever! :D
I never had the simple idea to just 1v/oct sequence rings on a stable pitch input signal. And then just scan sweet spots on the input signal. Thank you
Noise into a low pass gate then into rings can get you into piano territory.
That's a great idea... i do have a LPG too that I under-utilise!
Great stuff! Watching any Unperson video gives me GAS! 😂 Oh, my poor wallet! 😉
super sympathic video! keep on patching :)
"I kind of want to try the pitch bend mode on the Data Bender... But I also don't want to ruin it..."
[Literally 12 seconds later, tries the pitch bend mode on the DB.]
Newsflash, it didn't ruin it.
Haha! This is the dilemma and joy of having no presets in modular land :D
there is some resemblance to the Boss Tera Echo pedal, at some points in this video. Might be a similar algorithm inside the Boss…
I always wanted that pedal…
In the first patch with the MCO, when striking with the gate input on Rings you are activating the internal white noise burst as well as processing the MCO - so if you drop the gate input on Rings and control the MCO coming into the input with an enveloped VCA instead or intermittently, then you will get a different variation also. The plucking sounds will disappear. Nice patch, Rings is one of the best weird filters out there, works well with chords too.
Coming back to this over and over again! I love my rings as well, such a cool and versatile module especially if you modulate the heck out of it ;)
Wow great format, love the exploration story arc. Beautiful sounds, thank you!
Wow! This is powerful!

allways coming back to your channel, your joy is a joy to hear… great experiments
Sending envelopes to the BIA trigger input has similar surprising results that also seem rarely used.
BIA is the module I really regret selling!
Brilliant example of simple patching that achieves amazing results. Great work!
Cheers man!!
I use rings as a drone machine. Run on oscillator or lfo at audio rate into rings input.
Great idea ~ gonna give it a try!

It should work exactly the same I think 🤔 I’ve gotten rid of modules too that other folks are getting amazing sounds out of..
Data Bender (as cool as it is) is way too present for a Rings demo
could listen to this all day! love your reactions as you discover new sounds

Once again another great video! I’ve honestly never been super impressed by rings but I didn’t know you could bring external audio into it that’s interesting. Is there a buffer? It sounded like you were speeding it up and slowing it down in the end with that Fantasia tape.
I think the tape was just a bit wobbly lol
alot of people use rings as a voice but that input is the reason rings exists, yet hardly what people use it for
Thank you, now I “need” to get a rings :-/ just soon as I find the space... GASSssss....
Haha sorry man!! ☺️
This video made me go from wanting just Rings, to wanting Rings, MCO, and Data Bender. Nice one.
RIP my wallet, though.
I’m sorry dude, and right before Christmas too lol
What modules are in the rack? Sure Rings is cool, but what are you using to drive it around with? Thanks!
From left to right we have: Pam's New Workout, Maths, MCO, Z5000, RIngs, Data Bender, Dual Dagger, and the Happy Nerding FX Aid. :)

I am new to this. How could you place a drop bass under those beautiful melodies?
Would just need another voice in the rack! The BSP has two sequencers so can have two melody lines on the go at the same time
Informative and FUN!
