Your videos and general approach to music is feckin inspiring man. Was kinda dismissive of synth based music in the past but you have opened my eyes, well ears... Well heart. You've opened my heart.
@@TheUnperson It’s lovely, really pleased I own it. I’m enjoying not fully understanding it’s behavior for now. It’s going to take a while to master. I’ve got Rings / Beads / Boss CE300 / Timeline, all going into my Eventide H9 hall reverb, and it sounds glorious 😇
Going the other way - Beads into Rings - is a favorite of mine. Rings does interesting things with short excitation bursts, and Beads is phenomenal for that. If you've ever read Microsound, this patch is very close to Roads's suggestion of using pulsar synthesis into convolution. Basically, use Beads to make short grains separated by silence, using a stored buffer or the wavetables, and send that into Rings. Variations in grain envelope, length, etc., every option makes subtle to gross variations in the resonance. Make synchronous grain streams at sub audible rates and you can get jackhammer type sounds. Lovely textures!
This video is a really nice journey. Calming but at the same time full of exploration and learning new things. And like all good journeys it was sort of bittersweet in how fast it seemed to be over.
I love synths so much it's just stupid. I can tell by your videos that you completely understand me on that one. It's so nice to just hear this in the background while I'm taking a break from work at the end of the day, contemplating my next patch and gathering creative energy to plug in that first patch cable of the night nice beats and sounds throughout btw, really enjoying those interludes on my monitors
Hi! One of my fav channels. Really talented :D Just a quick tip (which you might know by now) but when you said you connected the VCA cause rings was too hot, you can long press the (i guess) mode button for it to set the volume according to the current input level. This not only allows you to set between different sources as it also allows you to directly connect a guitar (afaik). Keep posting, your videos are inspiring :D
Hey man, .. been a fan of yours .. yes, Beads & Rings, .. pretty powerful tools, I think. Beads has quite a few options, that are hiding, in plain sight. .. :)
I usually don't watch your tutorials (I am just a common listener, cannot understand the craft, sorry) but when I saw this title I had to see what were you talking about... I think I am a fan of jade wii now, thanks unperson!🙏
I need a 2nd rings now. Just had a goooood long go with Clank Chaos's new sequencing mode (fw 1.17) playing Rings chords > filter > Beads, and a bass voice from the matriarch on the side.
Thank you! I made a video a while back about my favourite ways to use delay and I demonstrate this exact mic setup in that vid :) ruclips.net/video/AEBoXCbt2M8/видео.html
Hi! I've been really enjoying your videos as have some of the same modules. I also use a Keystep and not sure which video it was but there was a thread I've lost which helped sort out the Keystep issues with certain modules as there's a gate delay? I found a forum trouble shooting it with a disting MK4 trigger delay but can't see the link if you have any tips of the original video where it was flagged! Thanks
Hey man. I also experienced this issue, specifically when using Plaits in DX7 mode, and using Beads as an oscillator. I managed to fix it by putting the gate through a channel of maths and altering the attack. I’m sure it will work the same with any envelope. I have heard about a disting algorithm that fixes it but I’m not familiar with the module so wouldn’t know which one. Hope that helps!
@@TheUnperson thanks so much, I've just found the thread on the mutable forum too. It's a strange thing, I get similar issues with the 2hp pluck, it seems to be when you move from one key to another you get the detuning effect, I'll have a play with maths and hopefully it'll sort it. Thanks for the great videos,. Really enjoying the videos you put out, the Plaits update is a joy, so much to explore and nice to see good musical content exploring modular.
cheers man! I actually demo'd the exact mic set-up in a previous video. It's right near the beginning of this one: ruclips.net/video/AEBoXCbt2M8/видео.html&ab_channel=TheUnperson
Thank you! The brand is Acos and I picked it up on eBay for a few bucks. There’s always loads of interesting vintage mics on eBay and worth searching occasionally:)
I love you pads with beads. However, I can’t stop thinking there must be a way to freeze a major chord at the beginning of the buffer and it’s minor chord version at the end of the buffer, then automating position(maybe using modulation wheel on the key step?) to be able to choose major or minor while playing. Follow?
Did you use the time machine on the boards of Canada part...I think you did...I recognize the sound of it. I think...Love the upload, fanx for sharing this...
Man, every time you try something random, it's awesome ;) oh ! and when the signal is too hot, press the recording quality button, keep pressing it and turn down the feedback knob, you'll adjust the level in, no need for a VCA (and it can distort quite good too) AND, off topic, (kinda) : I'm listening to the ULTIMATE COMBO right now : Tides VCO minor chords in Veils, modulated by an other Tides, the first output in Blades, the second and third in Data Bender and FX aid, the fourth in Beads...... It's beautiful sadness on a silver platter.
Cheers man! I had been using the Beads volume limiter and it was still too hot. Rings is hotter than the sun i think lol That patch sounds rad - you should make wee videos of your random patches!
Hey! I typically just go by ear. But you could use a tuner app on your phone, or another keyboard, and use the frequency knob to tune rings to middle C :)
I've often wondered why they call the extra modes in Rings 'hidden', they seem more like omissions from the manual ... ! Apart from the Easter Egg mode (never understood the name) which is a faff to get into, the main 'hidden' modes are just long presses on each of the buttons in their various modes. The only one that has two functions being the long press on the polyphony which changes the odd/even distribution.
the actual easter egg on rings is very much worth exploring. the chorus on the organ/string machine is genuinely gorgeous sounding, instant juno 60 vibes. and the formant filter is really interesting to play with as well.
@@fosferus Yes, I'm sure you're right. I keep meaning to install the 'Live Rings' firmware so that it's more easily accessible, which (because of all the button set up) I mostly overlook.
I think they were hidden modes because nobody knew about them and they were "discovered" by users. As for the name Easter Egg, I believe it originates from computer game developers who put secret things into their games, and it was reminiscent to finding eggs on Easter day :)
@@TheUnperson I have clouds with parasite firmware. I don't know it very well, but I know mutable instruments went out of business and I heard she,,/he said beads replaces clouds completely, I know there's only a little available yet,but I don't know if I should sell clouds and buy beads or not. Loving the Bob Ross energy of it all.
haha cheers man!

There is a photoshopped Bob Ross with a Modular photo somewhere on the web! 😊

Thanks for the kind words!! ☺️
Juste magnifique ! I like very much your simple approach , feeling , and the time you take to build and listen to the sound........

love this - really great vibes and good music too!
Bought beads because of one of your older videos. Been absolutely loving it. Now I want rings, watching your videos is bad for my wallet.

It’s not really patched in ~ the mic is going into a delay pedal and into my desk :)

Is Beads such higher quality that someone like me who has Clouds should still get Beads?
I’ve actually never owned clouds before so I’m not sure. I think there’s a lot of crossover so it depends what you use clouds for I guess.
plonk into starlab :D
