Already created a preset that i love using the new granular engines. Layered with a saw wave and other modulations it got me something amazing to work it. Thanks arturia. This is a killer update thatll only get better when they allow user samples with the next coming updates.
Given that the Minifreak came out around two and a half years after the Micro, and receives firmware updates at a roughly similar cadence, _and_ it's been just over two years since the Mini dropped, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Matrixfreak / Polyfreak / Megafreak in the oven for next year...
Is the reverb the built in FX on the MiniFreak? It sounds really nice and smooth, but clear with these sample/granular models. Sort of like the Novation Peak's reverb. Much better than the Hydrasynths reverb. It's a good combo, because those Plait's and Wavetable like digital edges these have give that nice reverb something to chew on. I found on the MicroFreak that without that, it sounded a bit pointy, edgy and bare. With the reverb, those edges actually have a nice character.
The minifreak is based mainly on the Mutable Plaits synth engines. I don’t think pigments is, but maybe there’s some crossover with the effects and stuff?
Pigments for me seen very similar to the mini and micro freak. Pigment had the granular processing first . Both are great and I’ve been thinking of buying either (not both 😀) . Such a great time for synths sound creation just now. Thanks for the video and have a good new year
you can do everything you can do on Minifreak on Pigments, but you cant do everything on Pigments on Minifreak...Minifreak sounds way more analog and raw by default, Pigments more clean and crisp by default. Minifreak has the awesome hardware connection to the VST plugin, Pigments is mouse only (or any custom midi controller, but no way as with Minifreak). But biggest difference is that Minifreak is so freaky by default, it really has its own cool sound, if you like that raw sound. Also, Minifreak OSCs are mono, not stereo. Only stereo about Minifreak are effects (video uses heavy reverb and unison effect (like chorus). So you can actually pan the oscilators, like supersaw kind of panning with other synths like Pigments, Serum, Sylenth etc etc. Ive notices this is sometime difficult in a busy mix, that Minifreak lacks stereo on OSC level. Again, you have to like the sound. Try the demos of both and deside. If not buying hardware, Pigments has much more possibilities, custom wavetables, samples etc so i would go with that, if i had to choose from nothing. Its really the minifreak hardware-software-tweak-fest that make us all so freaky :P
Ok it passes the unperson test. I'm undecided on the Minifreak or the Hydrasynth. If I get the Hydrasynth it will be the original with the CS-80 style strip. But if I get the Minifreak I will save some money and it has a million different synth engines now. Really like the Hydra though. It sounds epic. But so does the Mini. My head is spinning and I'm not getting both.
I have both synths and I’ve come to think of them like this: the Hydrasynth is a sound design machine. Do you like getting deep into parameters and spending time crafting sounds? The minifreak is a performance machine. It’s very immediate, with a fun sequencer and good sounds. Both are capable for of great sounds but ultimately the Hydrasynth is a deeper sound design synth, but lacking a sequencer, and the minifreak has a fantastic sequencer but is less deep.
@TheUnperson that actually is very helpful. Having spent years with Serum. I love it's sound design capability. Especially making wave tables from scratch. I'm still learning new things about it (AU5 has some great ideas on it) and I think I know stuff even the programmers never thought of! Like using Sytrus to create single wave forms and stacking those in the wave editor! You get some seriously good wave folding and even baked in filtering doing that! So I'm definitely all about sound design. And considering Serum doesn't have a sequencer. I have no problem creating sequences using the LFOs on that. I think Hydra even has a qustizer update so that makes it even easier. So Hydra is definitely ticking more boxes at this point. Thanks!
TheUnperson's point stands. Another way of looking at this is that for the Minifreak, there is a plugin version. You could get the Hydrasynth and the MiniFreak plugin, and be happy with that for a long time. And if you really love the MiniFreak, later buy the hardware. But there's no fully equivalent Hydrasynth alternative. Unless you consider something like PhasePlant. So maybe consider Hydrasynth Keys + Minifreak plugin (or Arturia V Collection, on sale), or Minifreak + Phase Plant. Probably cost similar amounts, and with both you are covered for an awful lot of ground. Personally, I'd be tempted to go Hydrasynth Keys + Arturia V Collection, because that polyphonic aftertouch keybed is a truly great controller. And with the ribbon would be awesome with those synths (CS-80 etc...). V Collection is pricey full price, but I think I bought it for around 199eur the last Black Friday sales.
@compucorder64 thanks! Those a good ideas. But I want out of the DAW! And I have an analogue addiction since I got my Moog GM. Infact it's more of a hardware addiction. So I'm definitely loving all the sounds I've heard from the Hydra! I'm sticking to my guns here. Because after that I'm getting a voltage lab 2 OR a solar 42. That will mean living off beans on toast for the next year ( I also need a new computer!) So I'm still undecided on those two highly experimental analogue synths. But at the moment I have made my choice and the choice is Hydrasynth!
My problem with this update is they really MISSED the mark. 8 sample based Lagos but no user samples...and also not available on osc2. WHAT A MISS imagine how much better this could be? wow underwhelming as can be... we get to use a handful of samples they picked...and not many on top of that. MICROFREAK wins with user wavetables and user samples. CMON Arturia! dayum.
@@jamesmartens160 When the Microfreak got its last update Minifreak users were rubbing their hand expectantly thinking 'any day now' -- that was getting on for two years ago. in fact I gave away my Micro and invested in the mini and we're still not up to Microfreak standards. That's not really good enough.

yes custom samples and wavetables please, this is what the world is waiting for. :)
I haven't explored it fully yet but planning on putting a preset pack together. Definitely hoping for custom samples!
Beautiful demo
Thank you :)
That jam at the start is 🔥
Cheers buddy!
This is phenomenal! Thank you for the heads up!
I don't own a minifreak, but damn does this look exciting for minifreak owners.
My only wish of minifreak is by now arturia should have brought out a full key version. Considering it's success too.

Fun. Now I need to see if the V version is updated.
It is
Since Minifreak V is used as the update tool for the Minifreak, you bet it is updated!
Sample at 1:09 sounds a lot like Salem
❤❤
Hi,...are we listening to the internal fx?
Yep! All sounds are from the minifreak only
@@TheUnperson mmm... that sounds impressive!
@designhappens8157 it's an impressive budget synth that's for sure.

Yep the reverb is from the Minifreak. It is a very nice reverb indeed! There’s also a very nice super unison effect which I’m a big fan of.
The mini freak also has multiple reverbs to choose from and you can modify how the reverb sends and returns, which gives you a lot to mess with!
Are the samples stereo?
I’m not sure actually!
I wonder how the mini freak compares to Arturia’s own pigments VST ?

I know. its a little frustrating. I can imagine all sorts of madness using my own samples and modulating between two different samples
I heard that user samples will come in a future update. I hope they also add the possibility for user wavetables at the same time.
