thanks so much for this - was considering buying one of these as wanted to trigger samples live on stage and you're the only place I found the answer to the question of if you could assign different samples to different keys!
Brilliant! This crossed my mind watching yesterdays vid. To fully flatten out the keyboard to pitch, and theoretically make even slices of drum breaks possible (?!), I found you can use the Cycling envelope and 2 assign slots as an extra offset. 1. Set cycling envelope to 0 rise and fall, max sustain, on run. 2 Set assign slots 1 and 2 to the Cyc Env->Pitch matrix slot. Key/Arp-> Assign 1 @ -100 depth, and Key/Arp Assign 2 @ ~ -70. Totally flat keyboard! Then, In theory Key can then also modulate Sample Start Point (“wave”?) to slice a break that would play without pitching up per key, just maybe?
That's a neat hack, shame you have to lose two assignable slots and the cycling envelope to do it... Hopefully Arturia will add a feature to remove re-pitching of samples - I'll certainly be asking for it!
[Just noting that the above adjustments are in addition to the Keyboard -> Pitch @ -100 that Osc puts in. Adding the cycling envelope as a second mod source gives it extra range.]
Circling back to finish the recipe with stock sample 42: Drum Breaker: Sample Machine Key/Arp -> Pitch -100 Assign 1, 2 : Cyc Enc -> Pitch Key/Arp-> Assign 1: -100 Key/Arp -> Assign 2: -65 Cyc Env : zero rise/fall, hold/sustain 100 Key/Arp -> Wave (sample start): 100 Octave +1 From there it will play a slice per key. So if Arturia would be so kind as to make it possible to completely turn off the pitch tracking we could have a different sample per key and if we prepared then by pitching then as we want then to sound and put them in the correct order we’d have the possibility of a different note for each key. Oh boy this will be amazing if they do update the range note compression to go to zero.
Wow it’s a bit over my head but sounds interesting , so being as it’s has a polyphony of 4, could you also get a round robin of notes in the mix somehow ?
Late to the party but want to say thank you for this ( and your other) videos. Love this approach and I greatly enjoy the contribution you make, holistically, to the creative world. Cheers. As I was watching the video I was thinking "bet the cycling envelope would sound cool" and " bet monophonic would sound good" and then you did both back to back, yay!
Great trick, I look forward to trying it. On a side-note, I would like to comment on your use of the Spice function. I see you changing the Spice level each time you ask the machine to make a change to the sequence. Sorry if that was deliberate, but I am not sure that you are using it at its most. Indeed, the way I understand it, the Spice intensity (that you chose through the pitch bend stripe) defines the amplitude of the changes that are made to the sequence. But then, in order to apply changes of that same intensity, you need to press the Dice button. In other words, the Spice parameter lets you define what intensity of change will be applied to a sequence, and each time you press the Dice button, you "roll the dice" to apply a series of such changes to the sequence. With a small value of Spice, each new sequence will differ from the previous one by small changes in the note placements, and with a large value of Spice, large changes of note timing will be applied to each new sequence. Hopes that clarifies a point. My apologies if you knew that already. Keep up sharing great ideas !
The whole time I was watching your last video I was thinking about trying this exact setup out when I can get my hands on the new firmware haha. Great stuff.

I just got one of these after years of thinking like a snob and it's not proper synth. What a twit I was/am, I'm now buying another one to run them in stereo. Sooo.. being able to load different vocal clips per key will make this synth faaaar more fun than I could have ever imagined when i first bought my Microfreak back in 2019 when it came out lol!
Yeah, I really regretted not mentioning it in my original video. Just be aware that (at the moment at least), you can't avoid repitching the samples across the keyboard. I'm going to feedback to Arturia asking whether there's the possibility of them adding a feature to disable that...
@@OscillatorSink My dream future features after the previews for this update would have to be an option to deliberately map samples to specific keys, and the ability to sample in via the vocoder input. @@dylantreisman621 yeah I feel like if it was possible to use the vocoder to sample in, they wouldn't have missed that opportunity. Might be an actual hardware limitation
I've tried this a long time ago and it doesnt really work as there's no sample accuracy in finding the start point. You only have 128 different available start points and it rarely lands in the right place

Could you tell us, which keys you exactly did activate to get this across? When I am at Key/Arp point and have pressed Assign 1 I cannot select the matrix routing for sample function.
You need to switch the Type knob to sample select mode first (shift+ turn type) and then assign to the type knob. You will also probably want to have a sample selected in the middle of the sample list as a starting point.
@@jacobl3780 thanks! All the samples are from my packs available here: oscillatorsink.gumroad.com/ They're free (although you can pay if you want). Merry Christmas!
No. You can play other drum sounds from the patch you're in (which might include pitched samples) as long as you have polyphony left, but you can't load up another preset.
Hi- how did you get the sampler to load - and then use the grain sampler? I thought the two different “engines” couldn’t be used simultaneously? Basically the first few minutes of the video was very quick for me
@@craigwood8862they are not being used simultaneously, but they both make use of the same samples and the sample selection works the same way. So for the purposes of the "spreading the samples across the keyboard" trick, that works identically in all 4 sample engines so you can do it in one engine and switch to any of the others. If you're unsure, it might be worth watching my more in depth video on the sample modes - as I say in this video, I'm skimming over some things that I previously covered in depth in that other video.
Start position is another way to do it, but it's far harder to do it accurately. Hmm, I might see if I can do some kind of meaningful beat slicing though. It might involve some maths though!
Most technical and useful reviews as always so never apologize 😆 Wondering if you can have sample collection assigned per preset? Otherwise must do libraring a lot plugged up to PC ..
Have you tried putting it in bootloader mode and sending the update again? Hold Arp+Oct+Shift as you power the synth on to put it in bootloader mode. MCC should detect it and you can send the firmware again.

Because it's very zoomed in and my camera isn't very good.
Most technical and useful reviews as always so never apologize 😆
Wondering if you can have sample collection assigned per preset? Otherwise must do libraring a lot plugged up to PC ..
You load a bank and that's what's on there for the time being. I talk about (and show) it in my other video.
Great 👍👍👍👍👍❤
Cheers!
Bob Harris makes great lofi beats
Can you modulate the sample selection with the sequencer's modulation tracks?
Haven't tried actually, but it should do - anything that can go into the mod matrix can also go into the mod tracks.
I made a follow-up video showing how to take this even further for breakbeat mangling: ruclips.net/video/wtzsIuFOW7E/видео.html
Oh yes ,oh yes...
Yes.
fun ! thx !!!
Excellent video. Crank you mic up a little bit cause on headphones it can be painful trying to listen to u and the MF clonking away. 😅
hype
great video, fyi cant read a thing on your screen, resolution is horrid.
Yeah, that's the camera I have to work with + the tiny screen. Sorry.
tout ça pour ça...
Sorry it wasn't to your tastes I guess?
Nice what you can do with that. Though i would rather use a Volca Drum or a LXR02 or a 1010 Blackbox for that.
Freaky stuff.
ATTENTION MIDI CENTER CRASHES ON UPDATE AND KILLED MY MICROFREAK! STOP USING THAT UPDATE. MY DEVICE IS BROKEN AND DEAD NOW!!!!
Have you tried putting it in bootloader mode and sending the update again? Hold Arp+Oct+Shift as you power the synth on to put it in bootloader mode. MCC should detect it and you can send the firmware again.
@@OscillatorSink Yes I could save the device. As problem was midi center crashed which is not ok and I told arturia guys about it.
